Abstract:The aim of this scoping review was to analyse all academic publications concerning players' physical and psychological health and performance-related variables in esports. A total of 49 articles were finally selected based on inclusion/exclusion criteria, and subsequently classified into 4 different categories. Studies reveal that esports players perform a good level of daily physical activity, related to their health and image, but unrelated to their competitive performance. On the contrary, there is a clear abuse in the hours spent dedicated to the computer, leading to the appearance of various physical and psychological pathologies. The skills related to strategy and collective tactics, communication skills, improvement of precision and technique, self-perception of competence, pressure control and decision-making, are highlighted as key elements in performance, being better as the player's level increase. Intervention studies focused on improving cognitive aspects, which they achieved, but it is not entirely clear that they can improve in-game performance. These findings provide important insights into key aspects which could condition competitive performance in esports. This information, together with the analysis of the most important variables related to in-game performance, may be key for teams and players in the implementation of training strategies beyond the game itself.
