Abstract:Considering the difficulties of college students' employment today, we analyzed the psychological reason in the background of informatization. From the students' psychological motivation, we presented the three contradictions that the college students were experiencing in job hunting: the contradiction between the individual and society, between the individual and family, and in the individual itself. With the advent of the digital age, the college students today are called "digital natives" who have grown up with digital technology and Internet, and it is claimed that they have developed quite different thinking styles from the previous generations. Based on the analysis of the social informatization, we argue that students should develop the psychological characteristics of initiative, activity, and independence, to achieve the changes in accessing information, processing the information, and choosing a career in coordination with the digital age, to reach the balance of personal values, family values, and social values in employment.

Abstract:The paper proposes that industrial-organizational (I-O) psychology will benefit greatly from expanding our research focus from predominantly individual differences to studying organizational differences. We argue here that an increased organizational frame of reference on variables of interest to I-O psychology (e.g., selection, job design, performance management (PM), work motivation) is important because it will enhance our understanding of organizational behavior and make I-O research more effective in practice. After noting some organizational-level research already being done, several examples are provided for how an organizational mindset and methods can provide new insights into traditional areas of I-O effort. Also discussed is how methodological issues that may have constrained the study of organizational differences in the past and the potential new issues such research may yield can be addressed. We conclude that the future maintenance and enhancement of the I-O psychology brand as a science–practice profession requires enhanced attention to the organization level of analysis as our frame of reference for research.

Abstract:New technologies are critical for sustained economic growth in contemporary organisations. However, the success of new technologies is dependent upon the relationship with users. Using a human factors framework, this article examines contemporary approaches to the assessment of human–technology interactions, highlighting the lack of integration and the need for a comprehensive approach that considers user contributions, including skills, capabilities and dispositions; technological contributions, including dependencies, reliability, complexity, and accuracy; and organisational contributions through training assessment, organisational climate and culture, and leadership. The successful integration of new technologies in the workplace is likely to lead to a more productive and enjoyable interaction for employees and customers, together with systems that are more resilient to the complexities and threats that are likely to emerge in the future work environment. Abstract:We conducted a quantitative and a qualitative study to assess the extent to which industrial and organizational (I–O) psychology has moved to business schools, understand the nature of this move, and offer a balanced discussion of positive and negative consequences of this phenomenon. In quantitative Study 1, we provide evidence that I–O psychologists affiliated with business schools currently constitute a majority of editorial board members and authors of articles published in Journal of Applied Psychology and Personnel Psychology but that I–O psychology, as a field, is growing. These results suggest that it is not the field of I–O psychology but some of the most active and influential I–O psychology researchers who are moving to business schools. In qualitative Study 2, we gathered perspectives from 144 SIOP Fellows and 27 SIOP presidents suggesting different views on Study 1's results ranging from very negative (i.e., “brain drain”) to very positive (i.e., “eye opener”) depending on the affiliation of the respondent. On the basis of these results, we offer 10 admittedly provocative predictions to stimulate follow-up research and serve as a catalyst for an important conversation, as well as the development of action plans, regarding the future of I–O psychology as a field.

Abstract:Big data is becoming a buzzword in today's corporate language and lay discussions. From individually targeting advertising based on previous consumer behavior or Internet searches to debates by Congress concerning National Security Agency (NSA) access to phone metadata, the era of big data has arrived. Thus, the Guzzo, Fink, King, Tonidandel, and Landis (2015) discussion of the challenges (e.g., confidentiality, informed consent) that big data projects present to industrial and organizational (I-O) psychologists is timely. If the hype associated with these techniques is warranted, then our field has a clear imperative to debate the ethics and best practices surrounding use of these techniques. We believe that Guzzo et al. have done our field a service by starting this discussion.

Abstract:Prospective Ergonomics requires building a vision of the future, which can be achieved empirically (e.g. analysing unmet needs) and/or creatively (e.g. creating future needs). We develop an alternative way of imagining the future, through a model-driven approach. Based on several developmental models, we provide a global picture of possible future(s) emphasising higher-ordered motivations and values (e.g. meaningfulness, accomplishment). To implement them, we then present a model of human accomplishment reinterpreting the concept of ikigai in light of selected psychological theories (e.g. self-determination, eudaemonic well-being, mindfulness). Finally, we apply it to an Industry 5.0 case study named ikigai robotics: we designed an equipment for railway maintenance following a double design process – a functional design loop and a motivational design loop. The process proved inspirational and the results both original and promising, opening avenues for Prospective Ergonomics to develop a new approach for designing the future. We provide a conceptual framework for Prospective Ergonomics and a case study exemplifying how motivational needs can be diagnosed and addressed in a design process. Psychological needs (self-fulfilment, meaningfulness) come as a new layer in addition to productivity needs (usability) and physiological needs (occupational health and safety).

Abstract:The invasion of futuristic technologies has made it inevitable for the future workforce to confront this reality and be ready to work in the new world of work in 2030. Higher education institutions (HEIs) are obligated to assume a pivotal role in equipping students with the requisite competencies. COVID-19 has expedited the development process compelling HEIs to make a mega shift to prepare the future workforce. Primary data was collected from HEI students across 11 countries to analyse their confidence to work in the new world of work in 2030 and to understand the role of HEIs in influencing students' confidence. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Partial Least squares (PLS) based structural equation modeling (SEM) procedures were employed to estimate a structural model of awareness and readiness (cognitive) and confidence (affective) factors, and the combined effect of HEI, awareness, and readiness on overall student confidence in their knowledge, skills and abilities. The statistical results indicate that there are strong significant relations between the HEI-Awareness; HEI-Awareness-Confidence; HEI-Readiness; and HEI-Readiness-Confidence and these dependencies are not just by chance. The results of this research are significant for higher education policy developers and curriculum developers to incorporate future competencies in the program. Further, educators and researchers will benefit from the results to develop teaching strategies and content to equip the future workforce for 2030.et.

Abstract:For over 50 years, psychology leaders have called for fundamental changes in how we undertake research, education, and community interaction. This paper provocatively argues the case for "why now, and how." The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated that psychology must contribute more to the wellbeing of local and global communities. We propose that a primary mechanism for doing so is by reinventing the undergraduate psychology program. This paper provides a stimulus to initiate international discussion of interconnected graduate capabilities, which we propose to be: Knowledge, Research Methods, Application of Knowledge to Personal, Professional and Community (Local, National, Global) Domains, Values and Ethics, Critical Thinking, Communication, and Cultural Responsiveness. Focusing on core aspects of psychology (Knowledge, Research Methods, Application) and more generic but evidence-informed capabilities is a unique formulation and should well serve graduates, employers, society, and the psychology discipline and profession in the uncertain "post-pandemic" era. We also propose psychological literacy as a promising unifying approach for psychology. Finally, we provide a "road-map" for curriculum renewal at international, national, and institutional levels, involving a consensus-seeking process (an extensive scholarly overview of the proposed capabilities is provided).

Abstract:In the 21st-century knowledge economy, the emergence of new liberal arts signifies a transformative shift in traditional humanities and social sciences. The concept aims to foster innovative liberal arts education and research to meet the demands of globalization and the information age. New liberal arts emphasize interdisciplinary integration, the cultivation of practical skills, an innovative spirit, and contributions to social and personal development. In this context, psychology, the science of human behavior and mental processes, has gained increasing importance in education. To fulfill the fundamental task of "establishing morality and nurturing people," and to cultivate virtues such as patriotism and public service, we adhere to the principle of "Exploring the Heart, Serving the People." We have developed a high-quality undergraduate training model for psychology that aligns with social development needs. This model integrates the three dimensions of "teaching, research, and application" to cultivate psychology professionals with sound personalities who are dedicated to public service. Through practical exploration, we have established a comprehensive undergraduate curriculum and teaching system that is "broad in scope (teaching), high in ambition (research), and grounded in application." This system includes a high-quality teaching team and a platform for diverse practical experiences, ensuring the integration and mutual reinforcement of curriculum teaching, scientific research, and practical application. Our approach effectively addresses the issues of theory being detached from practice, the disconnection between teaching and research, and the challenges in translating research findings into practice, thereby significantly enhancing the quality of undergraduate training.

Abstract:Organizations are undergoing unprecedented transformation in the area of talent management (TM). Companies are rapidly adopting new tools and approaches in a variety of what has traditionally been core areas of industrial and organizational (I-O) psychology such as performance management, employee attitudes, recruiting, testing and assessment, and career development. Increasingly, however, these new approaches have little to no research backing behind them, and they do not tend to be the focus of I-O psychology theory and research. We call this trend anti-industrial and organizational psychology (AIO), as we believe these forces to do not advance the field for long-term strategic impact. We present a framework that describes how AIO practices are adopted by organizations, and how I-O psychologists often gravitate away from these practices rather than actively help to separate the wheat from the chaff. We found support for our hypothesis through a brief analysis of Industrial and Organizational Psychology: Perspectives on Science and Practice , the peer-reviewed journal of the Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP). In this analysis, we found that only 10% of the focal articles from 2008 to 2016 represented topics that we call frontier —emerging areas in organizations but where there is no research support for them. We propose a set of recommendations for the field of I-O psychology and call for a more strategic approach to identifying and vetting new TM trends in order to increase the relevancy and impact of I-O psychology for our key stakeholders.

Abstract:The authors conducted a content analysis of all articles published in the Journal of Applied Psychology and Personnel Psychology from January 1963 to May 2007 (N = 5,780) to identify the relative attention devoted to each of 15 broad topical areas and 50 more specific subareas in the field of industrial and organizational (I-O) psychology. Results revealed that (a) some areas have become more (or less) popular over time, whereas others have not changed much, and (b) there are some lagged relationships between important societal issues that involve people and work settings (i.e., human-capital trends) and I-O psychology research that addresses them. Also, much I-O psychology research does not address human-capital trends. Extrapolating results from the past 45 years to the next decade suggests that the field of I-O psychology is not likely to become more visible or more relevant to society at large or to achieve the lofty goals it has set for itself unless researchers, practitioners, universities, and professional organizations implement significant changes. In the aggregate, the changes address the broad challenge of how to narrow the academic-practitioner divide.

Instead of discussing today’s top innovations in teaching (which may lose favor in a few years), and instead of predicting future trends in teaching technology (which is nearly impossible, given the pace of innovation), we provide psychology faculty and their departments with strategies for keeping up with teaching technology, no matter what form future technologies may take. These tips will serve educators over the long run, even as today’s technological advances become obsolete.

Abstract:Cognitive training is becoming increasingly popular as a topic of scientific research. We discuss possible as well as necessary future developments in this area. Among other things, we emphasize the need to develop more specific, mechanistic theories to guide cognitive training programs, discuss the combination of cognitive training with other cognitive-enhancement techniques, and consider the opportunities provided by virtual reality and gamification. We suggest that cognitive training programs should take individual differences more into consideration and discuss the societal and ethical background for the use of such programs.

Abstract:This work consists of an investigation in the form of a comparative analysis between students and professors from the STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), about their educational perspective in the context of the current industrial revolution - Industry 4.0 (I4.0). This research aims to investigate, in particular, how professors and students from a Control and Automation Engineering (CAE), Information Systems (SI) and Mechatronics Engineering perceive the educational process in relation to the development of skills needed for the upcoming job market. As future professionals, students need technical knowledge to deal with emerging trends, such as Big Data, Internet of Things (IoT) and Robotics. In addition, social skills, such as solving complex problems, dealing with conflicts, creativity, innovation and communication, leadership and collaborative work, are paramount. The research methodology adopted in this work is based on mixed methods, quali-quant research. Data collection was carried out through research based on questions related to three categories: intrapersonal, interpersonal and didactic. The study found that, although students claim to be prepared for Industry 4.0 challenges, professors think otherwise. There seems to be a pedagogical challenge to fully achieve the requirements for the development of future I4.0 professionals. In addition, this research identified that active learning methods, focused on the development of 21st century skills, are poorly applied by professors, which may indicate that students are not being exposed to real life situations necessary to better prepare themselves for the future challenges of I4.0.

Abstract:This article reviews computer applications developed and utilized by industrial-organizational (I-O) psychologists, both in practice and in research. A primary emphasis is on applications developed for Internet usage, because this "network of networks" changes the way I-O psychologists work. The review focuses on traditional and emerging topics in I-O psychology. The first topic involves information technology applications in measurement, defined broadly across levels of analysis (persons, groups, organizations) and domains (abilities, personality, attitudes). Discussion then focuses on individual learning at work, both in formal training and in coping with continual automation of work. A section on job analysis follows, illustrating the role of computers and the Internet in studying jobs. Shifting focus to the group level of analysis, we briefly review how information technology is being used to understand and support cooperative work. Finally, special emphasis is given to the emerging "third discipline" in I-O psychology research-computational modeling of behavioral events in organizations. Throughout this review, themes of innovation and dissemination underlie a continuum between research and practice. The review concludes by setting a framework for I-O psychology in a computerized and networked world.

Abstract:The future of work is one of the most crucial platforms currently for business leaders as organizations have to prepare themselves to adequately deal with megatrends and disruptors in their technical and physical environments. At the same time, megatrends and disruptors can present both business opportunities and threats. The research question this study dealt with was: How should high-performance organizations (HPOs) address megatrends and disruptors in such a way that they can secure sustainable performance? Thirteen megatrends and one disruptor were matched with the characteristics of HPOs, making use of the HPO Framework, which distinguishes five characteristics (management quality, openness and action orientation, long-term orientation, continuous improvement and renewal, employee quality), for mapping the predicted impact the megatrends and disruptor will have on HPOs. From this mapping exercise, clear opportunities and threats emerged for which solutions, i.e., courses of action to deal with the threats or take advantage of the opportunities, were identified from the literature. These courses of action will help leaders of HPOs in priority-setting and decision-making when making strategic plans and choosing solutions for their own organizations. Unfortunately, this study revealed that academic literature currently falls short at suggesting courses of action that organizations can use to deal with many of the megatrends and disruptors. This result creates an urgent call for in-depth academic research into ways that organizations, and specifically HPOs, should deal with the future of work changes as these courses of action have to be incorporated in future strategies such that they stay relevant for the daily practice of organizations.

Abstract:With its potential to change significantly the knowledge and skill-set requirements for industrial engineers (IEs), Industry 4.0 creates a need to reassess the place of IEs to avoid a greater shock than that caused by the information technology identity crisis of the 1990s. This article examines the likely impacts of Industry 4.0 on industrial engineering (IE) and proposes enhancements to IE curricula in South Africa. Research methods include a literature review, a study of IE curricula, and a questionnaire survey of IE programmes. Results indicate that several IE functions might become somewhat transformed, less visible, or downright diminished in Industry 4.0. Emphasis has shifted from traditional IE methods to data-driven functions and cyber-physical systems. The developing mismatch needs correcting by emphasising skills such as ‘big data’ analytics and novel human-machine interfaces in IE curricula. Only one university in South Africa has made progress towards the adoption of an Industry 4.0 infrastructure. The authors propose a set of curriculum enrichment items as the basis for reform.

Abstract:National governments and academic higher education institutions continue to realign human resource development (HRD) strategies to address the gaps in HRD mandate. This study will investigate new and recalibrated skills that higher institutions (HEIs) professionals and the labor force produce to reconfigure curriculum development in tertiary education. The study extracts narrative from 6 curriculum developers, 3 HRD heads and h3 manpower organizations on the labor landscapes from different local and multinational industries from entry-level to mid-career ranges through case scenario-based interviews and focus group discussions to determine the skills around motivation, innovativeness, and adaptability and subsequently integrate strategic initiatives to reconfigure the compatibility of these skills from higher education institutions to post-pandemic industries. The findings reveal skills that can be managed at the individual level, e.g., self-motivation and adaptability as well as the need to emerge from the technological pressures by adapting to organizational and clientele demands. These human resource traits become the mantra of surviving and progressing in a landscape shaped by the pre- and post-pandemic setting and become the basis of HEI programs to match the needs of the labor force and the industries.
