Abstract:Most space optical imaging systems work in vibration environment,so optical axis motion and image plane jitter caused by the vibration result in motion blur of image,which is a serious impediment to high resolution imaging and high precision detection.Image deblur of space camera has two schemes to achieve motion blur suppression: the first is combination of real-time hardware detection and real-time hardware compensation,and the second is combination of real-time hardware detection and software restoration compensation.The paper proposes a dual mode imaging of space camera to obtain two images: the first image is an inadequate exposure motion blur-free image and the second image is a precise exposure blurred image.Using image processing tools,we can obtain motion path during exposure(blur kernel) from the two images,and restore the sharp image with the blur kernel as a priori knowledge.This method does not require compensation devices,detection devices and auxiliary detection optical path,and can automatically revise blur kernel during iterative processing.The method can be easily applied in the current space camera for remote sensing and has potential application value to improve remote sensing image quality.
Effective Framework for Space Target Detection Through Atmospheric Turbulence

Abstract:Atmospheric turbulence is a major challenge in long-range imaging of ground-based telescopes, especially in the surveillance of space targets, whose observation distance is usually more than 100 km. In this case, space targets are extremely small in images, occupying less than 0.12% of the total image area, and suffer from severe blur and distortion. Consequently, the accuracy of object detection by both conventional and deep-learning-based methods is significantly hampered. Therefore, this paper proposes an effective framework for detecting space target through atmospheric turbulence. The framework incorporates a shallow deblurring module, a transformer-based feature extractor, and a small region proposal network. The training data comprises simulated degraded images of space target images against celestial backgrounds, as well as a selection of images from the Dotav2 dataset. Testing results show that the proposed framework outperforms the general framework, achieving a mean Average Precision (mAP) improvement of over 20%.
Image Deblurring by Motion Estimation for Remote Sensing

Abstract:The imagery resolution of imaging systems for remote sensing is often limited by image degradation resulting from unwanted motion disturbances of the platform during image exposures. Since the form of the platform vibration can be arbitrary, the lack of priori knowledge about the motion function (the PSF) suggests blind restoration approaches. A deblurring method which combines motion estimation and image deconvolution both for area-array and TDI remote sensing has been proposed in this paper. The image motion estimation is accomplished by an auxiliary high-speed detector and a sub-pixel correlation algorithm. The PSF is then reconstructed from estimated image motion vectors. Eventually, the clear image can be recovered by the Richardson-Lucy (RL) iterative deconvolution algorithm from the blurred image of the prime camera with the constructed PSF. The image deconvolution for the area-array detector is direct. While for the TDICCD detector, an integral distortion compensation step and a row-by-row deconvolution scheme are applied. Theoretical analyses and experimental results show that, the performance of the proposed concept is convincing. Blurred and distorted images can be properly recovered not only for visual observation, but also with significant objective evaluation increment.

Abstract:Image blur caused by camera movement is common in long-exposure photography. A recent approach to address image blur is to record camera motion via inertial sensors in imaging equipment such as smartphones and single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras. However, because of device performance limitations, directly estimating a blur kernel from sensor data is infeasible. Previous works that have attempted to correct blurry image content via sensor data have also been susceptible to theoretical defects. Here, we propose a novel method of deblurring images that uses inertial sensors and a short-long-short (SLS) exposure strategy. Assisted short-exposure images captured before and after the formal long-exposure image are employed to correct the sensor data. A half-blind deconvolution algorithm is proposed to refine the estimated kernel. An extra smoothing filter is integrated into the framework to address the coarse initial kernel. Hence, we propose a fast solution for optimization that uses the iteratively reweighted least squares (IRLS) method in the frequency domain. We evaluate these methods via several blind deconvolutions. Quantitative indicators and the visual performance of the image deblurring results show that our method performs better than previous methods in terms of image quality restoration and computational time cost. This method will increase the feasibility of applying deblurring to imaging devices.

Abstract:The issue of infrared image deblurring has been a significant concern. However, in some specific scenes, the current mainstream deblurring algorithms based on optimization or deep learning fail to provide satisfactory results. Aiming to address the ineffectiveness of deep learning methods due to the low-cost datasets' unavailability for specific scenes, we innovatively propose a relatively simple full-chain imaging degradation simulation method using ground-to-air aircraft infrared imaging scene as an example, which considers the effects of blur and noise caused by the atmosphere, imaging system, target motion and detector. Through this method, we could generate abundant blur-clear image pairs by altering various parameters. To enhance the neural network's generalization ability and the deblurring performance in the specific scenes, we employ a two-step approach: pretraining on the public GoPro dataset and subsequent finetuning on the simulation dataset. After testing on the simulation dataset and some real-world images, we have discovered the importance of selecting a pretraining dataset that closely matches the scene degradation mode. Additionally, regardless of whether the model is pre-trained on the UIRD or GoPro dataset, there are significant enhancements in the deblurring effect following finetuning with our constructed simulation dataset. In summary, compared to the traditional deconvolution methods and the methods trained on a general dataset, our approach not only exhibits superior deblurring capabilities but also effectively mitigates noise and prevents the occurrence of artifactual textures such as ringing artifact.

Abstract:Performing camera motion deblurring is an important low-level vision task for achieving better imaging quality. When a scene has outliers such as saturated pixels and salt-and pepper noise, the image becomes more difficult to restore. In this paper, we propose an edge-aware scalerecurrent network (EASRN) to conduct camera motion deblurring. EASRN has a separate deblurring module that removes blur at multiple scales and an upsampling module that fuses different input scales. We propose a salient edge detection network to supervise the training process and solve the outlier problem by proposing a novel method of dataset generation. Light streaks are printed on the sharp image to simulate the cutoff effect from saturation. We evaluate our method on the GoPro dataset, Kohler's dataset and Lai's dataset. Both objective evaluation indexes and subjective visualization show that our method results in better deblurring quality than do other state-of-the-art approaches.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a method for single image blind deconvolution. Many common forms of blind deconvolution methods need to previously generate a salient image, while the paper presents a novel L0 sparse expression to directly solve the ill-positioned problem. It has no need to filter the blurred image as a restoration step and can use the gradient information as a fidelity term during optimization. The key to blind deconvolution problem is to estimate an accurate kernel. First, based on L2 sparse expression using gradient operator as a prior, the kernel can be estimated roughly and efficiently in the frequency domain We adopt the multi-scale scheme which can estimate blur kernel from coarser level to finer level. After the estimation of this level's kernel, L0 sparse representation is employed as the fidelity term during restoration. After derivation, L0 norm can be approximately converted to a sum term and L1 norm term which can be addressed by the Split-Bregman method. By using the estimated blur kernel and the TV deconvolution model, the final restoration image is obtained. Experimental results show that the proposed method is fast and can accurately reconstruct the kernel, especially when the blur is motion blur, defocus blur or the superposition of the two. The restored image is of higher quality than that of some of the art algorithms.

Abstract:Out-of-focus blur occurs frequently in multispectral imaging systems when the camera is well focused at a specific (reference) imaging channel. As the effective focal lengths of the lens are wavelength dependent, the blurriness levels of the images at individual channels are different. This paper proposes a multispectral image deblurring framework to restore out-of-focus spectral images based on the characteristic of interchannel correlation (ICC). The ICC is investigated based on the fact that a high-dimensional color spectrum can be linearly approximated using rather a few number of intrinsic spectra. In the method, the spectral images are classified into an out-of-focus set and a well-focused set via blurriness computation. For each out-of-focus image, a guiding image is derived from the well-focused spectral images and is used as the image prior in the deblurring framework. The out-of-focus blur is modeled as a Gaussian point spread function, which is further employed as the blur kernel prior. The regularization parameters in the image deblurring framework are determined using generalized cross validation, and thus the proposed method does not need any parameter tuning. The experimental results validate that the method performs well on multispectral image deblurring and outperforms the state of the arts.

Abstract:In the field of deep space science detection and high resolution earth observation, a relatively high motion velocity is often generated between the optical camera and the imaging target. Images obtained during the exposure time can produce image motion blur, which becomes one of the main obstacles to acquire high resolution image near the target. As an extended task of the third phase of China's lunar exploration program, flight imaging of the planned sampling area of Chang'e-5 was carried out. A dual resolution camera with a wide field of view (FOV) camera and a narrow FOV camera was used for imaging mission. High flying speed causes the generation of large motion blurred images captured by the narrow FOV camera and the motion blur can be up to around 30 pixels. To deal with this problem, we analyzed the image features of the blurred images captured by the narrow FOV camera, and proposed a corresponding method that can estimate image motion value from the blurred lunar image based on small craters detection scheme and then adopted the regularization method to restore the image. The algorithm is applied in the batch processing of the real blurred lunar images and has achieved a significant restored effect.

Abstract:Fast image restoration for blurred remote sensing image is one of the focus problem in optical image processing. We present a method for remote sensing image restoration using a gyroscope sensor mounted with the camera. With motion track of the camera obtained from gyroscope sensor, we get a better PSF(Point Spread Function) estimation by calibrating the camera. Then we use the TV regularization to solve this non-blind deconvolution which runs faster than blind deconvolution. In experiments, we established a platform to simulate the vibration of satellite and get the synchronized gyroscope data in the exposure time, then we compare our restoration results with ground truth. Our experiments show that, the method has a good performance for blurred image caused by vibration of image system.

Abstract:When blurred images have saturated or over-exposed pixels, conventional blind deconvolution approaches often fail to estimate accurate point spread function (PSF) and will introduce local ringing artifacts. In this paper, we propose a method to deal with the problem under the modified multi-frame blind deconvolution framework. First, in the kernel estimation step, a light streak detection scheme using multi-frame blurred images is incorporated into the regularization constraint. Second, we deal with image regions affected by the saturated pixels separately by modeling a weighted matrix during each multi-frame deconvolution iteration process. Both synthetic and real-world examples show that more accurate PSFs can be estimated and restored images have richer details and less negative effects compared to state of art methods.
Motion Blurred Image Restoration Based on Hartmann-Shack Wavefront Sensor

Abstract:When relative motion between the target and the camera occurs, the captured images would be blurred. Due to the arbitrariness of the motion, it is of great difficulty to restore the degraded images. In this paper, a new method based on Hartmann-Shack Wavefront Sensor is proposed to deblur the degraded image of the extended target caused by arbitrary motion. Relevant theoretical analysis is given and a corresponding experimental system is built. During the exposure time, image sequences are obtained by the Hartmann-Shack Wavefront Sensor to calculate the displacement vectors, from which the Point Spread Function (PSF) is estimated to restore the blurred image. Experimental results show that the proposed method can efficiently restore the degraded image of the target. So the application of Hartmann-Shack Wavefront Sensor can be extended to detect the motion of target, which means we can deal with wavefront distortion and motion blur using Hartmann-Shack Wavefront Sensor simultaneously.

Abstract:This paper provides a new method to restore the image blurred by any motion and a corresponding system for experiments is established. Previous restoration methods can only be useable when the motion is special, for example, uniform rectilinear motion, which is solved in the paper. During the integral time of prime CCD, a series of images used to compute the displacement, are captured by the low resolution white-black CCD. And then, the instantaneous speed can be computed. From the theoretic analysis, we know that the Point Spread Function (PSF) has corresponding relationship with the instantaneous speed. Then the PSF for restoring the blurred image can be worked out. Finally, the Richard-Lucy (RL) method is used to restore the blurred image. The experiment shows that, for any motion blurred images, this method for image restoration can get preferable results.

Abstract:The imaging quality of ground-based observations of space objects is severely limited by atmosphere turbulence.The effects of the turbulence can only partially be compensated by adaptive optics.The prior constraints used in the current image restoration techniques include non-negative constraints,normalization and support region constraints.The Fourier spectrum of image was analyzed and then a multi-frame iterative blind deconvolution algorithm based on the Fourier constraints was proposed.The results of the experiment showed that the blurred images,especially the strong atmosphere turbulence degraded images can be restored effectively by this algorithm.

Abstract:Telescopes with a wide field of view (greater than 1 degrees) and small apertures (less than 2 m) are workhorses for observations such as sky surveys and fast-moving object detection, and play an important role in time-domain astronomy. However, images captured by these telescopes are contaminated by optical system aberrations, atmospheric turbulence, tracking errors and wind shear. To increase the quality of images and maximize their scientific output, we propose a new blind deconvolution algorithm based on statistical properties of the point spread functions (PSFs) of these telescopes. In this new algorithm, we first construct the PSF feature space through principal component analysis, and then classify PSFs from a different position and time using a self-organizing map. According to the classification results, we divide images of the same PSF types and select these PSFs to construct a prior PSF. The prior PSF is then used to restore these images. To investigate the improvement that this algorithm provides for data reduction, we process images of space debris captured by our small-aperture wide-field telescopes. Comparing the reduced results of the original images and the images processed with the standard Richardson-Lucy method, our method shows a promising improvement in astrometry accuracy.

Abstract:In ground-based astronomical observations or artificial space target detections, images obtained from a ground-based telescope are severely distorted due to atmospheric turbulence. The distortion can be partially compensated by employing adaptive optics (pre-detection compensation), image restoration techniques (post-detection compensation), or a combination of both (hybrid compensation). This paper focuses on the improvement of the most commonly used practical post-processing techniques, Richardson–Lucy (R–L) iteration blind deconvolution, which is studied in detail and improved as follows: First, the total variation (TV) norm is redefined using the Gaussian gradient magnitude and a set scheme for regularization parameter selection is proposed. Second, the Gaussian TV constraint is proposed to impose to the R–L algorithm. Last, the Gaussian TV R–L (GRL) iterative blind deconvolution method is finally presented, in which the restoration precision is visually increased and the convergence property is considerably improved. The performance of the proposed GRL method is tested by both simulation experiments and observed field data.

Blind Deblurring Method for CASEarth Multispectral Images Based on Inter-Band Gradient Similarity Prior

Abstract:Multispectral remote sensing images contain abundant information about the distribution and reflectance of ground objects, playing a crucial role in target detection, environmental monitoring, and resource exploration. However, due to the complexity of the imaging process in multispectral remote sensing, image blur is inevitable, and the blur kernel is typically unknown. In recent years, many researchers have focused on blind image deblurring, but most of these methods are based on single-band images. When applied to CASEarth satellite multispectral images, the spectral correlation is unutilized. To address this limitation, this paper proposes a novel approach that leverages the characteristics of multispectral data more effectively. We introduce an inter-band gradient similarity prior and incorporate it into the patch-wise minimal pixel (PMP)-based deblurring model. This approach aims to utilize the spectral correlation across bands to improve deblurring performance. A solution algorithm is established by combining the half-quadratic splitting method with alternating minimization. Subjectively, the final experiments on CASEarth multispectral images demonstrate that the proposed method offers good visual effects while enhancing edge sharpness. Objectively, our method leads to an average improvement in point sharpness by a factor of 1.6, an increase in edge strength level by a factor of 1.17, and an enhancement in RMS contrast by a factor of 1.11.

This framework involves updating blurring kernels and images, with a theoretical foundation in network design. Additionally, we propose a learnable blur kernel proximal mapping module (KPMM) to improve the accuracy of the blur kernel reconstruction. Furthermore, we propose a deep proximal mapping module in the image domain, which combines a generalized shrinkage threshold with a multiscale prior feature extraction block. This module also incorporates an attention mechanism to learn adaptively the importance of prior information, improving the flexibility and robustness of prior terms, and avoiding limitations similar to hand-crafted image prior terms. Consequently, we design a novel multiscale generalized shrinkage threshold network (MGSTNet) that focuses specifically on learning deep geometric prior features to enhance image restoration. Experimental results on real and synthetic remote sensing image datasets demonstrate the superiority of our MGSTNet framework compared to existing deblurring methods.

DeblurGS: Gaussian Splatting for Camera Motion Blur

Abstract:Although significant progress has been made in reconstructing sharp 3D scenes from motion-blurred images, a transition to real-world applications remains challenging. The primary obstacle stems from the severe blur which leads to inaccuracies in the acquisition of initial camera poses through Structure-from-Motion, a critical aspect often overlooked by previous approaches. To address this challenge, we propose DeblurGS, a method to optimize sharp 3D Gaussian Splatting from motion-blurred images, even with the noisy camera pose initialization. We restore a fine-grained sharp scene by leveraging the remarkable reconstruction capability of 3D Gaussian Splatting. Our approach estimates the 6-Degree-of-Freedom camera motion for each blurry observation and synthesizes corresponding blurry renderings for the optimization process. Furthermore, we propose Gaussian Densification Annealing strategy to prevent the generation of inaccurate Gaussians at erroneous locations during the early training stages when camera motion is still imprecise. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that our DeblurGS achieves state-of-the-art performance in deblurring and novel view synthesis for real-world and synthetic benchmark datasets, as well as field-captured blurry smartphone videos.
