Abstract:A homeotropically oriented polymer network stabilized liquid crystal film with a smectic A (SmA)–chiral nematic (N∗) phase transition was prepared. Thermal switching between light transmission from homeotropically oriented SmA phase and adjustable light scattering from N∗ phase with a focal conic texture can be achieved by adjusting the ratio of two chiral dopants which demonstrate different variation tendency of helical twisting power with increasing temperature.

Abstract:Main-chain cholesteric liquid crystal polymers are a promising candidate for the development of responsive photonic devices due to the combination of selective reflection and soft, elastic properties, but it is difficult to enhance these materials with new kinds of responsiveness due to the inherent lack of mesogenic side groups. Here, a new strategy is showed to obtain a dual-responsive elastic cholesteric polymer material by preparing a semi-interpenetrating network consisting of a cholesteric main-chain polymer and a hygroscopic poly(ampholyte). The material is shown to undergo a redshift of the reflected color upon swelling with water, while the color blueshifts when a strain is applied. Color patterns can be prepared by localized photopolymerization at different temperatures, leading to brightly colored responsive images with high contrast. Due to the elastic nature of the material, it can easily be made into a wearable device, and its application as a multifunctional smart sensor for sweat detection and movement detection is demonstrated. The results show that new responsiveness can be added to main-chain cholesteric polymers by preparation of interpenetrating networks, which can be further extended to develop various kinds of multi-responsive smart materials.

Abstract:Bioinspired dynamic structural-colored materials have shown wide applications in sensing, display, information encryption and security. However, because of restrictions of design principles, it remains a big challenge to break limitations of color control, color-changing rate, and repeatability. Here, we demonstrate fast, linear, and reliable structural-color modulations with a one-component chiral nematic mesophase following a thermally-induced phase separation mechanism. Molecular dynamic simulation reveals that the hydrogen bonding tunability be-tween the mesophase and solvent dominates the fast and reversible phase transition behaviors that account for the fast and repeatable color responses. The photonic crystal displays wide-range (red-to-purple) colorations by controlling the mesophase concentration and external temperature. Due to the linear change of turbidity upon temperature stimuli, linearly programmable color regulations are enabled without color hysteresis. These fea-tures allow the development of multi-functional devices with applications for portable sensors, painting deco-ration, and information security encryption.

Abstract:Smart and flexible nanocomposite materials with structural colors have great potentials in the field of wearable sensors. However, the mechanochromic property of conventional photonic materials severely interferes with the optical signal outputs that are tunable by non-strain stimuli, which greatly impedes their applications in wearable photonic sensors. Herein, a wearable nanocomposite hydrogel temperature sensor based on thermally-switchable structural colors that are independent of mechanical deformations, is fabricated by the facile in-situ gelation of N -isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM), nanoclay discs, carbon black, and monodisperse silica or polymeric NPs in their aqueous dispersions. The resulting non-assembled arrangements of the monodisperse NPs account for uniform structural color independent of mechanical deformations and observation angles. Simultaneously, the temperature-induced reconfiguration of the physically cross-linked poly-NIPAM hydrogel matrix, leads to super-large volume changes and in turn wide-range structural color shifts in almost the entire visible spectrum. The smart hydrogel matrix with homogenous polymer chain length by dynamic physical cross-linkings among exfoliated nanoclay discs, makes the photonic hydrogel robust, stretchable, and self-healable. The combination of mechanical-deformation-insensitive and thermally-switchable structural colors in the nanocomposite hydrogel enables skin-based wearable temperature sensing with naked-eye detection. This work opens a new platform for diverse non-invasive wearable photonic sensors beyond the current strain sensing.

Abstract:Cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) particles can adaptively respond to constant changes in external stimuli and thus are widely used in solvent-sensing, pattern fabrication, and anti-counterfeiting. Previous studies discussed the color change at the center of the particles for various applications. However, few studies analyzed the color change of the brush structure of particles in response to various applications because of the complicated birefringence effect. In this paper, we present a novel integrated sensing system based on the synergetic color change from the center and the brush structure of CLC particles. This system provides abundant and additional sensing information relative to the traditional system. CLC particles are prepared by mixing reactive mesogens, a reactive chiral dopant, a non-reactive LC molecule, and a photoinitiator by using a microfluidic device and subsequent photopolymerization. The CLC particles exhibit gorgeous color at the center and brush structure upon various solvent stimuli because of the Bragg reflection and the birefringence effect, which is explained by the possible color-changing mechanism introduced in this paper. For proof-of-concept applications, such color-changing polymer particles are demonstrated in multi-solvent-sensing detection and pattern display. This study provides new insights into the development of stimuli-responsive advanced functional materials with tailorable nanostructures toward technological applications ranging from sensing to display.
Mechanochromic Responses of Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Droplets with Nanoscale Periodic Helical Structures Showing Reversible and Tunable Structural Color

Abstract:Cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) droplets with nanoscale periodic helical structures are omnidirectional under planar anchoring, and light is selectively reflected from the droplet center at all directions. However, when CLC droplets are too small, random light scattering dominates. In this regard, we present a facile method to increase the selective Bragg reflection of CLC droplets and demonstrate the unique mechanochromic responses of CLC-droplet-dispersed polymer films. The films are originally opaque and white, when the films are bidirectionally stretched, spherical CLC droplets are squeezed into oblate shape and the point defect at the center of each CLC droplet transitions to a ring defect, greatly increasing the selective Bragg reflection region and resulting in the appearance of structural color. By tuning the helical pitches via the chiral dopant concentration from 1.7 to 3.0 wt %, the desired structural color is achieved. Smart sensors show color changes in response to hydration and dehydration are designed, paving the way for the developments of CLC-based functional materials and smart devices.

Abstract:Stimuli responsive optical materials are attractive for many areas, from healthcare to art design. However, creating intricate color-changing patterns for visual information is still a challenge. This work describes the preparation of mechanochromic structural colored intricate pictures imprinted in cholesteric liquid crystal elastomers by using a chiral isosorbide molecular photo-switch. The photo-switch contains a photoisomerizable cinnamate moiety and was incorporated in a main chain liquid crystal oligomer with photopolymerizable acrylate end groups. After coating, the structural colored film was irradiated with ultraviolet (UV) light in air causing E/Z isomerization of the cinnamate units leading to a redshift of the structural color of the film. A grayscale photomask was used to spatially control the photoisomerization reaction and imprint colorful pictures such as portraits and landscapes, in the cholesteric liquid crystal films with high resolution. Photopolymerization in a nitrogen atmosphere led to a mechanochromic cholesteric liquid crystal elastomer with striking structural colors that blueshift upon strain independently. The sharp details of the patterns were preserved even under deformation and the system returned to the initial state upon strain removal. Our work offers a simple photo-switch approach to prepare stimuli responsive optical polymers imprinted with color-changing pictures of unprecedented complexity.

Solvatochromism Based on Structural Color: Smart Polymer Composites for Sensing and Security

Abstract:We report a convenient and scalable strategy to achieve large-area transparent photonic crystal (TPC) films that can be fully reversibly switched between an initial transparent state and a structurally-colored state. This photonic material is based on an ordered colloidal crystal structure of polymer core-shell particles with an engineered refractive index balance of the core and the shell components. Highly transparent viscoelastic quasi-solid films are created that can be spatially UV-cross-linked, giving invisible encrypted photonic patterns with different solvent response compared to non-cross-linked regions, which appear after immersion in solvent media, thus demonstrating clear and fully reversible/switchable solvatochromic properties. Our intuitive simulation models demonstrate how the emergence of structural color occurs due to increasing refractive-index contrast, whereas wavelength shifting originates from commensurate solvent swelling of the shell medium. In addition to the very clear revelation of optical patterns (large fractional changes in reflectance, from transparency to a resonant reflectivity of ~10%), these materials and thin-film generation methods are inherently scalable, robust and versatile. The demonstrated stimuli-responsive photonic films may thus give rise to new practicable applications in the fields of environmental sensing and product security.

Abstract:Mechanochromism is color change of a material induced by external force. Recently, it has been intensively studied for its potential applications in biomimetic camouflage devices and strain sensors. In this article, we developed a simple and robust way to fabricate reversible mechanochromic trilayer system using liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) and transparent elastomers. Subjected to mechanical stretch, an opaque polydomain LCE can transform to transparent monodomain, which is used as a mask to block (without stretch) or show (with stretch) the color patterns painted on an elastomeric layer attached underneath. In this article we also demonstrated the visualization of heterogeneous strain field in the developed mechanochromic system.

Abstract:A self-assembled three-dimensional (3D) nanomaterial, blue phase liquid crystal (BPLC), with elastic deformation is the aim of a stimuli-responsive material because it combines the 3D photonic nanostructure and the rubber elasticity of the elastomer network. However, there is still a lack of a flexible approach to preparing BPLC films with high elastic deformation and a low glass-transition temperature. Here, we develop a reproducible and scalable two-step protocol of the thiol-acrylate Michael addition (TAMA)–photopolymerization reaction approach for the preparation of high-performance, low glass-transition temperature, and uniform BPLC films. Linear chain extension occurs through the TAMA reaction, and the cross-link density and molecular weight can be programed by varying the reaction time, resulting in the phase transition from blue phase I to the chiral nematic phase. The cross-linking density, molecular weight, and resulting structure can be frozen by forming an elastic network using photopolymerization. The results show that the increase of elastic deformation by 3 times, shift of the structural color >186 nm, and lowering of the glass-transition temperature to −34.93 °C are successfully achieved. In addition, the BPLC film pattern can sustain repeatable, rapid, and continuous elastic deformation and a uniform structural color change when triggered by multiple stimuli of temperature, stretching, and organic vapor. This work provides new insights into customizable stimuli-responsive 3D photonic nanostructured materials, facilitating their application in sensing, display, and anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract:Flexible wearable materials have frequently been used in drug delivery, healthcare monitoring, and wearable sensors for decades. As a novel type of artificially designed functional material, photonic crystals (PCs) are sensitive to the changes in the external environment and stimuli signals. However, the rigidity of the PCs limits their application in the field of biometric and optical sensors. This study selects silk fibroin (SF) and poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM) as principal components to prepare the hydrogel with the physical crosslinking agent lithium silicate (LMSH) and is then integrated with PCs to obtain the SF-PNIPAM dual-crosslinked nanocomposite for temperature and strain sensing. The structural colors of the PCs change from blue to orange-red by the variation in temperature or strain. The visual temperature-sensing and adhesion properties enable the SF-PNIPAM dual-crosslinked nanocomposite to be directly attached to the skin in order to monitor the real-time dynamic of human temperature. Based on its excellent optical properties and biocompatibility, the SF-PNIPAM dual-crosslinked nanocomposite can be applied to the field of visual biosensing, wearable display devices, and wound dressing materials.

Abstract:A heat-induced drastic switching from a transparent smectic A (SmA) phase to a light-scattering nematic (N*) one was achieved for a (homeotropically oriented polymer network (HOPN)/side chain type liquid crystalline polymer (SCLCP)/liquid crystals (LCs)/chiral dopant) quaternary composite. In the case that the composite was rapidly cooled from the heat-induced light-scattering N* phase to the SmA one, the SmA phase exhibited a strong light-scattering state. When an a.c. electric field above the threshold valve was applied to the composite in the light-scattering state, the strongly light-scattering SmA phase was changed into a transparent SmA one. Both the transparent and the light-scattering SmA states could be maintained for a long time (similar toyears) at room temperature. Thus, the composite with thermally addressable and electrically erasable characteristics was newly proposed.
Unveiling the structural influence of nematic mesogens on customizable temperature and spectral responses

Abstract:Rapid and accurate detection and visualization of temperature variations near the human body hold significant importance. This study presents thermochromic colloids capable of adjusting the detectable temperature range and reflection wavelength over a wide spectrum. The systematic investigation focuses on understanding the influence of the molecular structure of nematic mesogens on the morphological dynamics of cholesteric liquid crystal droplets and their associated thermochromic behaviors. A tunable colorimetric temperature range (i.e., from 10 to 40 °C) and high sensitivity (i.e., Δλ ΔT-1 > 100nm °C-1) are realized through precise modulation of the alkyl chain lengths in cyanobiphenyls molecules, combined with a cholesteryl oleyl carbonate as a chiral dopant. We demonstrate the efficiency of a binary mixture of different mesogens, enabling customized structural colors with desired temperature responses. Finally, inspired by the ability of the octopus to camouflage through the elongation or contraction of its pigment cells, thermochromic droplets are embedded within a polymer matrix, resulting in a portable skin patch that offers quick, reversible, and direct temperature visualization of the human body.

A Photomechanical Film in which Liquid Crystal Design Shifts the Absorption into the Visible Light Range

Abstract:Liquid crystalline polymer networks (LCN) with azobenzene monomers bend reversibly under UV-light irradiation, combining photomechanical and photothermal effects. However, the harmful nature of UV-light limits their use in biology and soft robotics. Although visible light-absorbing tetra-ortho-fluoro-substituted azobenzenes exist, liquid crystalline monomers have never been prepared. Previously, such azobenzenes were added as photoactive additives (up to 10%) to otherwise passive liquid crystalline polymer networks. In this work, a molecular design of a liquid crystalline, polymerizable azobenzene switchable by visible light is presented. The monomer assembles in a highly fluid nematic phase, but polymerizes in a layered smectic C phase. The films are produced solely from the monomer without additional liquid crystalline components and are actuated with visible light. Bending experiments in air and under water differentiate photomechanical and photothermal effects. Remarkably, a 60 µm splay aligned film maintains its deformation for hours, slowly reverting over days. Monomer liquid crystallinity is characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), and polarized optical microscopy (POM); polymer films are analyzed using WAXS and DSC on a homogeneously aligned film. The synthetic procedure is high yielding and polymer film fabrication is scalable, which enables the use of safe and efficient photomechanical LCNs in soft robotics, engineering and biology.

Abstract:A mechanochromic liquid crystalline elastomer is presented with force‐induced synergetic pigmentary and structural color change, whose mechanosensitivity is enhanced by the stress‐concentration induced by the doped nanoparticle. The materials have a large color‐changing gamut and high mechanochromic sensitivity, which exhibit great potential in the field of mechanical detectors, sensors, and anti‐counterfeiting materials. The ability of some animals to rapidly change their colors can greatly improve their chances of escaping predators or hunting prey. A classic example is cephalopods, which can rapidly shift through a wide range of colors. This ability is based on the synergetic effect of the change of pigmentary and structural colors exhibited by their own two categories of color‐changing cells: supernatant chromatophores offer various pigmentary colors and lower iridophores or leucophores reflect the different structural colors by adjusting their periodicities. Here, a mechanochromic liquid crystalline elastomer with force‐induced synergetic pigmentary and structural color change, whose mechanosensitivity is enhanced by the stress‐concentration induced by the doped nanoparticle, is presented. Abstract:In nature, some animals change their deceptive coloration for camouflage, temperature preservation or communication. This astonishing function has inspired scientists to replicate the color changing abilities of animals with artificial skin. Recently, some studies have focused on the smart materials and devices with reversible color changing or light-emitting properties for instantaneous strain visualization. However, most of these works only show eye-detectable appearance change when subjected to large mechanical deformation (100%-500% strain), and conspicuous color change at small strain remains rarely explored. In the present study, we developed a user-interactive electronic skin with human-readable optical output by assembling a highly sensitive resistive strain sensor with a stretchable organic electrochromic device (ECD) together. We explored the substrate effect on the electromechanical behavior of graphene and designed a strategy of modulus-gradient structure to employ graphene as both the highly sensitive strain sensing element and the insensitive stretchable electrode of the ECD layer. Subtle strain (0-10%) was enough to evoke an obvious color change, and the RGB value of the color quantified the magnitude of the applied strain. Such high sensitivity to smaller strains (0-10%) with color changing capability will potentially enhance the function of wearable devices, robots and prosthetics in the future.

Abstract:Asymmetric and ultrasensitive structural color responses in colloidal photonic composites featuring embedded 1D photonic nanochains are achieved by a shear‐induced change of lattice orientation. The color shift mechanism based on lattice orientation expands the design freedom of mechanochromic materials. These unique mechanochromic effects are utilized to construct ultrasensitive optical twist sensors and dynamic optical anti‐counterfeiting labels. Mechanochromic photonic crystals, capable of altering structural colors in response to external forces, are emerging intelligent materials in various fields, such as visual sensors and anti‐counterfeiting technologies. However, conventional mechanical responses of photonic crystals mainly rely on stretching or compression, resulting in symmetric and limited mechanochromic effects due to restricted changes in lattice spacing, particularly limiting the recognition of the direction of force. Here, asymmetric and ultrasensitive structural color responses are reported in colloidal photonic composites featuring embedded one‐dimensional (1D) photonic nanochains of colloidal particles based on shear‐induced lattice orientation change. It is shown that shearing deformation tilts the photonic nanochains within the polymer matrix, leading to a remarkable and asymmetric color shift depending on shear force and observing directions. The asymmetric response encourages to develop ultrasensitive twist sensors capable of detecting subtle twisting movements as low as 0.2° and twist direction. Furthermore, by integrating magnetic and deformation orientation control, dynamic optical anti‐counterfeiting labels capable of displaying highly intricate patterns are devised. This unique shear‐induced color‐shifting mechanism expands the responsiveness of mechanochromic materials, with broad implications in many other areas, including structural health monitoring, soft robotics, and artificial skin.

Abstract:A sharp change in transmittance from a transparent state to a light scattering one within a tiny temperature range is induced accompanied with the heat-induced phase transition from a smectic-A (S-A) phase to a chiral nematic (N*) one in a side-chain smectic-il liquid crystalline polymer (SALCP)-low-molecular-weight nematic liquid crystal (NLC)-chiral dopant ternary composite system with a homeotropic boundary condition. By adjusting the polymer ratio, an induced N* phase exhibiting strong light scattering over a wide temperature region has been obtained. The resulting scattering texture retained in the S-A phase due to fast cooling from the N* phase can be rather stable and can be easily erased by cooling slowly from the N* phase to the S-A phase after the scattering texture being heated into the N* phase again or by application of an alternating current electric field on the scattering texture directly. Based on these characteristics, it is very possible that this composite system will be used as a novel thermal addressed liquid crystal display material with respect to a fast response, a high contrast, and a durable memory effect. Abstract:Smart materials demonstrate fascinating responses to environmental physical/chemical stimuli, including thermal, photonic, electronic, humidity, or magnetic stimuli, which have attracted intensive interest in material chemistry. However, their limited/harsh stimuli-responsive behavior or sophisticated postprocessing leads to enormous challenges for practical applications. Herein, we rationally designed and synthesized thermochromic Ni(II) organometallic [(C2H5)2NH2]2NiCl4-xBrx via a facile mechanochemical strategy, which demonstrated a reversible switch from yellow to blue color with a tunable phase-transition temperature from 75.6 to 61.7 °C. The simple electrospinning technology was applied to fabricate thermochromic Ni(II) organometallic-based nanofiber membranes for temperature monitoring. Furthermore, the organic charge-transfer cocrystal with a wide spectral absorption of 300-1950 nm and a high-efficiency photothermal conversion was combined with thermochromic Ni(II) organometallics for the desired dual-stimuli photo/thermochromism. This work supplies a new strategy for realizing multiple stimuli-responsive applications, such as thermal/light sensor displays and information storage.
