Abstract:<p>With the explosive usages of nanoparticles, human beings are inevitably exposed to them, which poses a great threat to human health. Hence, it is important to remove nanoparticles from water before their exposure to the human. In this study, tetraethylenepentamine modified silica (SiO2-TEPA) was prepared and explored as a new coagulant to remove silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Under optimized conditions, the removal capacity of SiO2-TEPA towards AgNPs was up to 1986.6 mg/g, with removal efficiency of 98.3% in ∼35 min. During coagulation process, four interactions were speculated between SiO2-TEPA and AgNPs, including charge neutralization, metal-ligand interaction, hydrogen bond and bridging function. Additionally, the high content of N and suitable N-containing chain length of TEPA may be another key factors to the fast coagulation and high removal efficiency. The study paved a new way for the development of new and efficient coagulant for AgNPs, or even other nanoparticles.</p>
