Abstract:Persistent challenges in hydroformylation of olefins include controlling regioselectivity, particularly for short aliphatic olefins and conducting reactions under ambient conditions. We report here the synthesis of monophosphine-Rh complexes on a typical chelated diphosphine ligand mediated by a Zr-MOF through isolating a pair of phosphorus atoms. We demonstrate that single-crystal X-ray diffraction can elucidate the structural transformation of the Rh catalyst during olefin hydroformylation, providing valuable information on active site reconstruction during catalysis. The Rh-MOF catalyst demonstrates excellent catalytic and recyclable performance in the hydroformylation of short aliphatic olefins with linear to branched ratios of up to 99 : 1. Due to the framework's capacity to adsorb and concentrate gases, the catalytic reactions occur under room temperature and pressure, eliminating the need for the high temperature and pressures typically required in homogeneous systems. This study show that Zr-MOF can be a unique platform for synthesizing unusual catalytic species that cannot exist in solutions for meaningful chemical transformations and elucidate valuable structural information pertaining to metal-based catalysis.

Abstract:Rhodium-catalysed hydroformylation, effective tool in bulk and fine-chemical synthesis, predominantly uses soluble metal complexes. For that reason, the metal leaching and the catalyst recycling are still the major drawbacks of this process. Ultrastable 3V-Pph3 Polymers Supported Single Rh Sites for Fixed-Bed Hydroformylation of Olefins

Abstract:The heterogenization of homogeneous catalysts is of critical importance for both fundamental research and practical applications. The key obstacle to industrial applications of heterogenized homogeneous catalysts is the long-term stability of the immobilized molecular complexes. We unambiguously demonstrate in this report that the vinyl-functionalized PPh3 polymers supported single Rh sites (Rh/POL–PPh3) catalyst provided not only excellent catalytic activity but also ultrahigh stability for fixed-bed olefins hydroformylation, which is one of the most important industrial homogeneous catalytic processes for the synthesis of aldehydes and alcohols. HAADF-STEM and EXAFS results indicated that the Rh atoms were present in single Rh sites which were strongly coordinated with the exposed phosphorous atoms of the POL–PPh3 support. The Rh/POL-PPh3 catalyst provided high activity and selectivity because it maintained the catalytic functionalities similar to the homogeneous HRh(CO)(PPh3)3 complex, as demonstrated both by 31P MAS NMR and in situ FT-IR experiments. Thus a reaction mechanism, similar to that over the homogeneous HRh(CO)(PPh3)3 complex, was proposed for olefin hydroformylation over the novel Rh/POL–PPh3 catalyst.

Abstract:The stability of Rh-based heterogeneous catalyst is a key issue in the hydroformylation of olefin. Confinement of active Rh species has been considered as an effective strategy to achieve stable catalyst. In this work, phosphine ligand was successfully confined in ZIF-8 material and coordinated with metal Rh by reduction procedure to develop an efficient and stable Rh-based catalyst for hydroformylation of 1-octene. The results indicate that the catalyst reduced at 300 oC under H2 atmosphere exhibits better stability than that with NaBH4 as reductant and undoped P catalyst. Various characterizations demonstrate that the superior performance is due to the strong interaction between metal Rh and P, inhibiting the leaching of Rh active species. This work opens an effective strategy for the synthesis of highly stable catalyst in the hydroformylation reaction.

Abstract:Rh-based heterogeneous catalysts generally have limited selectivity relative to their homogeneous counterparts in hydroformylation reactions despite of the convenience of catalyst separation in heterogeneous catalysis. Here, we develop CoO-supported Rh single-atom catalysts (Rh/CoO) with remarkable activity and selectivity towards propene hydroformylation. By increasing Rh mass loading, isolated Rh atoms switch to aggregated clusters of different atomicity. During the hydroformylation, Rh/CoO achieves the optimal selectivity of 94.4% for butyraldehyde and the highest turnover frequency number of 2,065 h −1 among the obtained atomic-scale Rh-based catalysts. Mechanistic studies reveal that a structural reconstruction of Rh single atoms in Rh/CoO occurs during the catalytic process, facilitating the adsorption and activation of reactants. In kinetic view, linear products are determined as the dominating products by analysing reaction paths deriving from the two most stable co-adsorbed configurations. As a bridge of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, single-atom catalysts can be potentially applied in other industrial reactions.

Abstract:A highly porous and crystalline metal-organic framework (MOF) ZIF-8 has been synthesized and used for the preparation of a supported rhodium nanoparticle catalyst (Rh@ZIF-8). The material has been characterized by PXRD, TEM, EDX, ICP-AES and nitrogen adsorption. The catalytic properties of Rh@ZIF-8 have been investigated in the hydroformylation of alkenes, with different chain length and structure, to give the corresponding aldehydes, and showed high activity. Furthermore, after the reaction was complete, the catalyst could be easily separated from the products by simple decantation and reused five times without a significant decrease in the activity under the investigated conditions.

Abstract:In the study of heterogeneity of homogeneous processes, effective control of the microenvironment of active sites is a reliable means to improve the selectivity of products. Here, we develop a high-performance Rh-based atomically dispersed catalyst for olefin hydroformylation by controlling the electronic environment and spatial distribution of active metals on the supports, which is achieved through wet impregnation of Rh on ZnO modified with Pi and Co. Various characterizations demonstrate that Co weakens Rh–CO interactions and Pi promotes the formation of atomically dispersed Rh, which thereby improves the selectivity of linear aldehydes in hydroformylation. Abstract:The hydroformylation of 1 octene based on rhodium complex has been investigatedin terms of rhodium precursor,ligand effect and reaction condition of 5MPa ( p (CO)∶ p (H 2)=1∶1),140℃,the activity order of different rhodium precursors is:Rh(CO)(PPh 3)(acac)[Rh(CH 3COO) 2] 2Rh 6(CO) 16 .Temperature,pressure of syngas and P/Rh have great effects on the yield of iso nonyl aldehyde.The hydroformylation of l octene or l decene catalysed by rhodium based catalysis system with ligand such as Ph 2P(CH 2) 4PPh 2,Ph 3P,(C 8H 17 ) 3PO,Bu 3PO,Ph 3PO or Ph 3PS has been carried out.The results show that matching relation between reactivity of olefin and stability of Rh catalytic species is of importance to hydroformylation of 1 octene and 1 decene.
Ultralow-Loading and High-Performing Ionic Liquid-Immobilizing Rhodium Single-Atom Catalysts for Hydroformylation.

Abstract:We have developed a Keggin polyoxometalate (POM)-based ionic-liquid (IL)-immobilizing rhodium single-atom Rh catalyst (MTOA)(5)[SiW11O39Rh] (MOTA=methyltrioctylammonium cation) that can afford exceptionally high catalytic activity for the hydroformylation of alkenes to produce aldehydes at an ultralow loading of Rh (ca. 3 ppm). For styrene hydroformylation, both the conversion and the yield of the aldehyde can reach almost 99 %, and a TOF as high as 9000 h(-1) was obtained without using any phosphine ligand in the reaction process. Further characterization by FTIR, ICP and ESI-MS analysis revealed that the single Rh atom was incorporated in the lacunary POM anions. In particular, the bulky IL cation can play an additional role in stabilizing Rh species and thus prevent aggregation and leaching of Rh species. The IL catalyst was miscible with n-hexane at temperatures; this contributed to exceptionally high activity for hydroformylation even at ultra-low loading of IL catalyst.

Abstract:The design and construction of Rh-based heterogeneous catalysts with excellent catalytic activity and high atom utilization for hydroformylation of olefins is extremely important but still challenging. Herein, we report a robust dual-active sites coupling catalyst containing triphenyl phosphine-coordinated Rh clusters and Rh-N4 single atomic sites (PPh3-RhAC-SA/N-C) for hydroformylation of olefins. The PPh3-RhAC-SA/N-C exhibits ultra-high activity to the hydroformylation of 1-hexene among the reported Rh-based catalysts, achieving the turnover frequency value of 6599 h−1, which is 13-fold higher than that of conventional Wilkinson’s catalyst (508 h−1). Density functional theory calculations reveal that PPh3-coordinated Rh clusters can facilitate the adsorption and activation of olefins and H2. The adjacent Rh-N4 provides a more favorable adsorption site for CO, enabling the easy addition of CO to carbon chain. The incorporated PPh3 increases the electron cloud density of Rh clusters, reduces the energy barriers of hydrogenation step on Rh clusters, and thereby enhancing the activity of catalyst for hydroformylation. Furthermore, PPh3-RhAC-SA/N-C can be applied as a recyclable catalyst without obvious deactivation. This work provides a novel design concept for the construction of dual sites coupling catalyst from the atomic scale for synergistic heterogeneous hydroformylation.

Abstract:Rhodium nanoparticles have been conveniently synthesized by one-pot chemical reduction of aqueous rhodium chloride (RhCl3·3H2O) dispersed in toluene solution in the presence of amphiphilic tetraoctylammonium bromide (TOAB) and chiral (R)-BINAP at ambient conditions. The resulting highly dispersed rhodium nanoparticles show small and narrowly distributed core sizes (1.5–2.0nm). The chirally stabilized rhodium nanoparticles were also immobilized on silica by impregnation to give the corresponding supported catalysts. 31P MAS NMR results and IR spectra of adsorbed CO confirm that chiral (R)-BINAP ligands stabilize the nanoparticles by coordinative interaction between phosphine and rhodium, and produce chirally catalytic active sites on the rhodium nanocatalysts. Chirally stabilized catalysts exhibit high regioselectivity and chiral induction ability for the asymmetric hydroformylation of olefins. The supported rhodium nanocatalysts show the increased activities compared to the unsupported catalysts (e.g. from 12 to 22h−1 for the hydroformylation of styrene). One hundred percentage regioselectivity of branched aldehyde and up to 59% ee were obtained for the hydroformylation of vinyl acetate.

Abstract:Abstract Hydroformylation is one of the largest industrially homogeneous processes that strongly relies on catalysts with phosphine ligands such as the Wilkinson’s catalyst (triphenylphosphine coordinated Rh). Heterogeneous catalysts for olefin hydroformylation are highly desired but suffer from poor activity compared with homogeneous catalysts. Herein, we demonstrate that rhodium nanoparticles supported on siliceous MFI zeolite with abundant silanol nests are very active for hydroformylation, giving a turnover frequency as high as ~50,000 h −1 that even outperforms the classical Wilkinson’s catalyst. Mechanism study reveals that the siliceous zeolite with silanol nests could efficiently enrich olefin molecules to adjacent rhodium nanoparticles, enhancing the hydroformylation reaction.

Abstract:Precisely controlling the regioselectivity with monophosphine ligand is a long-standing challenge in hydroformylation. Herein, we describe the one-pot encapsulation of single-atom Rh catalysts within porous monophosphine polymers for regioselective heterogeneous hydroformylation of alkenes. The optimized catalyst (Rh@POP-PTBA-HA-50) shows remarkable enhancement of regioselectivity compared with the combination of Rh(CO)2(acac) and monophosphine ligand (PTBA), and the linear aldehyde selectivity increases from 62% to 92%. In addition, this catalyst shows excellent catalytic activity (one run TON at least 60,000) and good stability. Detailed studies reveal that the encapsulation of atomically dispersed Rh catalysts within porous monophosphine polymers may endow the catalysts with high regioselectivity, while the encirclement of metal active species by abundant but dispersive phosphine ligand would strengthen the stability of the catalysts through multiple-sites-coordination. The present study provides meaningful insights for designing heterogeneous catalysts with good regioselectivity, and merging the advantages of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:The hydroformylation of alkenes to prepare aldehydes using rhodium-based catalysts has been widely investigated, while homogeneous Rh catalysts always suffer from poor reusability. Herein, a promising solution was proposed to introduce phosphorous heteroatoms into a porous carbon support to fabricate a stable and efficient catalyst (Rh/P-mC). And the obtained Rh/P-mC had high hydroformylation activity under mild reaction conditions. The substrate expansion experiment using different alkene substrates and the catalyst cycling experiment demonstrated the universality and stability of this catalyst. The hydroformylation reaction mechanism was also proposed, and the effect of the interaction between phosphorus and rhodium on the hydroformylation reaction was verified. Thus, this work has great application prospects for the highly efficient catalytic hydroformylation of alkenes and provides an efficient method for the design of high-performance hydroformylation catalysts.

Abstract:Alkene hydroformylation is an extremely important industry process currently accomplished via homogeneous catalysis. Heterogeneous hydroformylation is being avidly pursued as a more economical and sustainable process. Herein, we report the construction of zeolite-encaged rhodium catalyst for efficient hydroformylation. Through a facile in situ hydrothermal strategy, isolated Rh delta+ (delta = 2.5) can be encaged in faujasite and efficiently stabilized via interaction with framework oxygen atoms, producing a Rh@Y model catalyst with well-defined rhodium sites and coordination environment. Rh@Y exhibits high catalytic activity, perfect chemoselectivity, and recyclability in 1-hexene hydroformylation under mild reaction conditions, making it a robust heterogeneous catalyst for potential applications. A state-of-the-art turnover frequency value of 6567 molC=C/molRh/h for Rh@Y can be achieved in 1-hexene hydroformylation at 393 K, outperforming all heterogeneous catalysts and most homogeneous catalysts under comparable conditions. With the well-defined structure of Rh@Y, the detailed mechanism of alkene hydroformylation can be interpreted via theoretical calculations, and the advantages of heterogeneous hydroformylation are well explained. This work provides a promising solution toward efficient heterogeneous noble metal catalysis by encaging stable isolated ions in a zeolite matrix. [GRAPHICS] .

Abstract:Multinuclear MAS NMR together with XRD and N2 adsorption were employed to characterize the local structures of heterogeneous Ph3P-Rh/SBA-15 and supported homogeneous HRh(CO)(PPh3)3/SBA-15 catalysts. It is found that Ph3P-Rh complex can be tightly grafted on SBA-15 through the Si-O-Rh bonds while much less such bonds are formed in the supported homogeneous counterpart. This can be correlated to the longer catalytic life of heterogeneous PPh3-Rh/SBA-15 for propylene hydroformylation.

In the present work, we develop a phosphorus coordinated Rh 1 single-atom catalyst with nanodiamond as support. Benefiting from this unique structure, the catalyst exhibits excellent activity and regioselectivity in hydroformylation of arylethylenes with wide substrate generality, i.e., with high conversion (>99%) and high regioselectivity (>90%), which is comparable with the homogeneous counterparts. The coordination interaction between Rh 1 and surface phosphorus species is clarified by 31 P solid-state NMR and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Rh single atoms are firmly anchored over nanodiamond through Rh-P bonds, guaranteeing good stability in the hydroformation of styrene even after six runs. Finally, by using this catalyst, two kinds of pharmaceutical molecules, Ibuprofen and Fendiline, are synthesized efficiently with high yields, demonstrating a new prospect of single-atom catalyst in pharmaceutical synthesis.

Abstract:The hydroformylation of alkenes is a cornerstone transformation for the chemical industry, central for both functionalizing and extending the carbon backbone of an alkene. In our study, we explored silica-supported crystalline rhodium sulfide nanoparticles as heterogeneous catalysts in hydroformylation reactions, and found that RhxSy systems (x=17, y=15 or x=2, y=3 with 1 wt.% Rh on SiO2) greatly outperform metallic Rh nanoparticles. These systems proved to be exceptionally competitive when benchmarked against other cutting-edge catalysts in terms of activity, with Rh17S15/SiO2 being the superior catalyst candidate. By employing local environment descriptors, unsupervised machine learning and density functional theory, we have examined structure-performance relationships. Our results highlight that the presence of S in close proximity to the catalytic site unlocks the tunability of the surface catalytic properties. This allows for the substrate affinity to be modulated, in particular for Rh17S15, with adsorption energies rivaling those of pristine Rh and improved spatial resolution.
