Abstract:The presence of fractures or discontinuities in rocks is a significant factor that contributes to safety concerns, including landslides, rock bursts, and underground water inflow, in engineering projects. Therefore, it is critical to obtain reliable precursor information during the rock failure and crack propagation. The infrared radiation and acoustic emission (AE) technology were combined to monitor the sandstone specimens with a single pre-set crack under uniaxial loading. In order to illustrate the damage evolution of rocks at different loading stages, the infrared radiation characteristics were analyzed and the number of outlier infrared radiation temperature (NOIRT) was proposed. The sudden changes and obvious concentration near the peak stress of NOIRT of specimens were observed during the failure stage of rocks, which was consistent with the changes in the AE hit counts. Furthermore, the infrared thermograms were divided into pixel grid to analyze the infrared radiation temperature (IRT) change of each pixel. And the infrared radiation information generated by the damage to the loaded rock can be captured in a timely and clearly. Using the 3-standard-deviation criterion (3 s criterion) method to extract the abnormal IRT points of rocks at each moment, which can visually determine the initial position and propagation direction of the cracks during rock fracture processes. Moreover, the spatial and temporal distribution of abnormal points can reflect the characteristics of crack evolution. Thus, NOIRT and the pixel grid method of infrared thermograms can provide precursor information for rock failure and crack propagation. These findings offer a reference value for early warning and prediction of engineering disasters.
