Abstract:A novel method to measure the absolute phase shift oil reflection of thin film is presented utilizing a white-light interferometer in spectral domain. By applying Fourier transformation to the recorded spectral interference signal, we retrieve the spectral phase function phi, which is induced by three parts: the path length difference in air L, the effective thickness of slightly dispersive cube beam splitter T(eff) and the nonlinear phase function due to multi-reflection of the thin film structure. We utilize the fact that the overall optical path difference (OPD) is linearly dependent on the refractive index of the beam splitter to determine both L and T(eff). The spectral phase shift oil reflection of thin film structure can be obtained by subtracting these two parts from phi. We show theoretically and experimentally that our new method can provide a simple and fast solution in calculating the absolute spectral phase function of optical thin films, while still maintaining high accuracy.

Abstract:A measuring system of film thickness based on atomic force microscope has been developed.At first,the border of a kind of film should be searched according to profile curves,then the height difference between the area which has the film and the area which hasn′t could be computed,and the height difference is just film thickness.Compared with step height measuring instrument and optical profiler,the system as several remarkable advantages, such as simple operation,strong anti-jamming,high precision.The experiment results show that the system is of high repeatability,and could measure the thickness of various films.

Abstract:Although computer vision offers ample possibilities, there is currently a lack of general film measurement software. Here, we propose a software called PyCinemetrics, which is a computational film studies tool offering five functions that utilize deep learning and PySide2 to deconstruct the visual style of films. It uses TransNetV2 to divide a film into shot-frames, allowing for the exploration of Average Shot Length (ASL) and pace. The tool also extracts main colors from shot-frames using K-Means. Furthermore, it can extract movie subtitles using EasyOcr to obtain dialogue. Additionally, PyCinemetrics utilizes object detection based on VGG19 to identify metaphorical props and objects. By detecting the proportion of skeletal points occupied in the frame using OpenPose, it indirectly determines the shot scale. Finally, PyCinemetrics was integrated and implemented using PySide2. A group of classic films was analyzed using PyCinemetrics, demonstrating its accuracy and efficiency in frame analysis.

Abstract:Visual Communication, Ahead of Print. In recent years, a growing trend of abstract and experimental animation has emerged in Hong Kong, with an increasing number of works produced over the last two decades, particularly since around 2015. This article examines how Hong Kong artists approach abstract animation, the predominant aesthetic trends, and how these trends relate to or diverge from Western traditions in visual music, following pioneers such as Hans Richter, Viking Eggeling, Oskar Fischinger, Harry Smith and Norman McLaren. Employing content analysis, as used by Emmanouil Kanellos (2018) and textual analysis, this study investigates 95 selected works from the Relentless Melt screening series curated by Max Hattler and organized by the Hong Kong-based society Relentless Melt. By categorizing the data under two separate systems – the 'What System' and the 'Where System', as suggested by Margaret Livingstone in Vision and Art: The Biology of Seeing (2002) – the analysis encompasses aspects related to the perception or recognition of objects, faces, or other properties under the 'What System', and the perception of motion, depth, spatial organization and figure/ground segregation under the 'Where System'. Unlike pioneering visual music artists who largely abandoned mimetic constructions in their aesthetics, some Hong Kong artists employ various types of representational abstraction. In addition, many do not shy away from expressing concepts or narratives in their hybrid visual music works while retaining fundamental elements, such as audio-visual synchronization. This project represents an initial step towards a more systematic understanding of Hong Kong's visual music practices, aiming to promote plurality over homogeneity by critically examining the multiple facets of artistic practice in Hong Kong. It is hoped that this study will contribute to international scholarly discourse and establish a trajectory for further exploration.

Abstract:The expansion of the digital integration mode of contemporary digital cinema from creation to projection and the change of cinematic language both herald the breakthrough of technology once again and the opening of a new era of digital cinematic art. From the aesthetic point of view, digital cinema has overturned and dismantled some of the theoretical essentials and important concepts of traditional film aesthetics about film ontology, and the changes and progress of digital cinema’s generation principle, audiovisual environment and media properties have profoundly influenced film art creation and audiences’ aesthetic approach. Digital reproduction and regeneration can realistically simulate reality and transcend reality to construct the story world in film, forming a higher level of aesthetic composition and aesthetic concept. The innovation of film media and the transformation of digital film machines enable audiences to develop an embodied experience at a super close distance or without distance, thus falling into the “immersion of the here and now” and “playable story”. The digital anthropomorphic film phenomenon experience and the immersive viewing mode of multimedia sound and image have perfectly realized the freedom and transcendence of digital film aesthetic experience and become an important force to promote the development and evolution of film aesthetics. It is the original purpose of this dissertation to explore the relationship between digital film technology development and film aesthetic discourse under the new digital technology conditions, to sort out the aesthetic implications and aesthetic characteristics of digital films, to explain the film concepts and aesthetic issues in the digital era, and to try to complete the systematic construction of contemporary digital technology film aesthetics.
New Media Goes to the Movies: Digitizing the Theatrical Audience

Abstract:Movie theaters typically appear adjacent to discussions of new media. Although there has been work on digital cinema, we shift the focus from the digitization of the medium to the digitization of the theatrical audience and analyze the movie theater as new media. To do so, we look at the historical and contemporary strategies for digitizing the theatrical audience of a prominent theater chain. We identify common media of digitization, including credit cards, computerized point-of-sale systems, and loyalty programs. The origins of these techniques and imperatives trace back to the 1970s and 1980s, even as they take on new forms today. We then analyze the industrial logics of audience digitization and emergent communication and data collection methods. Finally, we analyze the movie theater as a platform, showing both the relevance of movie theaters and the challenges their inclusion as an object of study poses for contemporary platform studies.

Abstract:A comprehensive study of the phenomenon of microcinema is presented. The tasks of semantic analysis of the concept of “microcinema” are set and solved, its characteristic features are discovered and, on the basis of the results obtained, an actual definition of the term is proposed for the first time; it is revealed on which screens the ultra-short meter exists today. The hypothesis that ultrashort films as a phenomenon cannot be fully considered as a product of the digital era is substantiated, this form inherits classical cinema, although it’s presented to the audience at other, modern venues. This problem is considered in view of the widespread interpretation of the term “microcinema” as a format that arose in the 21st century in the network space. As the main difference from various kinds of ultra-short audio-visual content posted online, the focus of micro movie on the coverage of philosophical, life problems, the search for new meanings, the demonstration of the author's views on existential issues is indicated. As a result of studying the filmography of reputable international film festivals, this assumption is confirmed. The boundaries of the timing of ultrashort films are revealed, for which the requirements put forward by specialized microcinema festivals to authors are investigated.
Computer Interface as Film: Post-Media Aesthetics of Desktop Documentary

Abstract:This paper explores a recently emerged audiovisual form called desktop documentary, an interdisciplinary computer-based variant of the essay film. As a post-media practice, no longer exclusively dependent on the film medium, desktop filmmaking represents a hybrid audiovisual genre entirely conducted in the digital environment by using and exploiting preexisting materials in new contexts while using the advantages of the Internet, widely used software and digital tools. Desktop documentary filmmaking corresponds to the widespread artistic practice of postproduction – a concept introduced by Nicolas Bourriaud signifying a new state of affairs when all texts of culture are already available (mostly as digital objects) and the artist intervenes on existing materials rather than produces artworks ex nihilo. Belonging to the tradition of essay film – a cinematic documentary and experimental mode in which moving images and off-screen verbal voice or textual captions establish complex relations – desktop video essays introduce new post-media aesthetics. Similar to the idea of using everyday materials in the artistic context, initially proposed with Duchamp’s ready-mades, which unprecedentedly effaced every notion of the style from their avant-garde aesthetics, desktop documentaries often minimize and abolish cinematic stylistic qualities. One of the most significant aspects of desktop documentaries is that the act of film viewing does not differ from common computer user experience: having replaced traditional film screen with the computer interface, the interactive process of computational multitasking and navigation, performed on various digital data and files, becomes the very content of the film. After the historical overview of the phenomenon and general introduction into the post-media theory, selected works of representative desktop documentarists such as Kevin B. Lee and Louis Henderson are analyzed in their deconstructive approach to traditional and digital filmmaking – subversive both formally and politically. Cinematic Interpretation of Spatiality

Abstract:On the cinematic screen, our perception of space, both built and natural space, can be audiovisually captured, expressed or even reconstructed. The filmic portrayal of spatiality can capture individual or broader cultural comprehensions of our lived spaces and reveal deeper culturally rooted understandings of everyday environments that diverge between the East and the West. The research project “A Cinematic Musée Imaginaire of Spatial Cultural Differences” (CineMuseSpace) aims to uncover these spatial cultural differences embedded in cinema and recently hosted a filmmaking workshop at the University of Nanjing to explore a selection of spatial concepts through the medium of film. This paper examines the methodology employed during the workshop and analyses the filmic products. It demonstrates how the medium of film can function as a receptacle for the everyday experience of lived spaces and furthermore capture the evolving role played by cultural locations, such as Chinese gardens.

Abstract:Distinguished from the traditional film aesthetic representation, the microfilm corresponds to the consumption of audiences instantly and the appeal of the fragmented experience. In this paper, the author analyzes the immersion concept of micro film, whose audio-visual elements can cause spatiotemporal chaos for making audience experience beyond the state of the text. The author takes Tuner as an example, makes aesthetic deconstruction of this microfilm’s elements, and then analyzes the visual art performance and the sense of immersion in scientific cognition. At last, the true road that microfilm will turn to is the aesthetic immersion in the technical elements.

A Chinese Tale of Three Regions: a Century of China in Thousands of Films

Abstract:Over the past 70 years, because of their different historical and social contexts, the film industries of China’s three regions, namely mainland China, Taiwan, and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), have exhibited distinct characteristics that grow out of a single cultural root. Based on data from the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), this study investigates how the image of China has spread overseas through cultural products by applying big data analysis and machine learning methods to compare the content, topics, and attitudes toward the image of China disseminated by films originating in these three regions. The results show that the three areas have sought to express their subjectivity during periods of flux and striven to connect with the world in films. The macroscopic analysis of large-scale content allows the exploration of hidden cultural phenomena and compensates for the lack of objectivity of traditional research methods, while understanding embedded historical and cultural contexts of the three regions helps to clarify the regions’ ethnic, cultural, and emotional connections. Therefore, this study has contributed to cultural sociology both in topic and methodology.

Abstract:When modernity arrives in China, does it come to be situated in certain locations, and is its presence spatialized in specific ways? How is the spatialization of modernity cinematized and, conversely, how is that cinematic modernity spatialized? This article focuses on the ways in which the cinema produces space in the context of 1930s Shanghai leftist films and illustrates how various competing elements and their spatial meanings are organized, paying close attention to cinema's spatial manifestation of modernity and coloniality. By examining how Shanghai 1930s leftist cinema intervenes and wrestles with an urban-rural, or, better, west-east, course of influence from the colonial and the imperialist forces, I show a corresponding rural-urban movement in the group of urban melodramas analyzed. Finally, I propose a notion of the spatial Now that characterizes the construction of the filmic diegesis that reaches beyond its screen space.
Time-synchronic comments on video streaming website reveal core structures of audience engagement in movie viewing

Abstract:To what extent movie viewers are swept into a fictional world has long been pondered by psychologists and filmmakers. With the development of time-synchronic comments on online viewing platforms, we can now analyze viewers' immediate responses toward movies. In this study, we collected over 3 million Chinese time-synchronic comments from a video streaming website. We first assessed emotion and cognition-related word rates in these comments with the Simplified Chinese version of the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (SCLIWC) and applied time-series clustering to the word rates. Then Hierarchical Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (HDBSCAN) was conducted on the text to investigate the prevalent topics among the comments. We found different commenting behaviors in front of various movies and prototypical diachronic trajectories of the psychological engagement of the audience. We further identified how topics are discussed through time, and tried to account for viewer's engagement, considering successively movie genres, topics and movie content. Among other points, we finally discussed the challenge in explaining the trajectories of engagement and the disconnection with narrative content. Overall, our study provides a new perspective on using social media data to answer questions from psychology and film studies. It underscores the potential of time-synchronic comments as a resource for detecting real-time human responses to specific events.

Quantifying the global film festival circuit: Networks, diversity, and public value creation

Abstract:Film festivals are a key component in the global film industry in terms of trendsetting, publicity, trade, and collaboration. We present an unprecedented analysis of the international film festival circuit, which has so far remained relatively understudied quantitatively, partly due to the limited availability of suitable data sets. We use large-scale data from the Cinando platform of the Cannes Film Market, widely used by industry professionals. We explicitly model festival events as a global network connected by shared films and quantify festivals as aggregates of the metadata of their showcased films. Importantly, we argue against using simple count distributions for discrete labels such as language or production country, as such categories are typically not equidistant. Rather, we propose embedding them in continuous latent vector spaces. We demonstrate how these “festival embeddings” provide insight into changes in programmed content over time, predict festival connections, and can be used to measure diversity in film festival programming across various cultural, social, and geographical variables—which all constitute an aspect of public value creation by film festivals. Our results provide a novel mapping of the film festival circuit between 2009–2021 (616 festivals, 31,989 unique films), highlighting festival types that occupy specific niches, diverse series, and those that evolve over time. We also discuss how these quantitative findings fit into media studies and research on public value creation by cultural industries. With festivals occupying a central position in the film industry, investigations into the data they generate hold opportunities for researchers to better understand industry dynamics and cultural impact, and for organizers, policymakers, and industry actors to make more informed, data-driven decisions. We hope our proposed methodological approach to festival data paves way for more comprehensive film festival studies and large-scale quantitative cultural event analytics in general.

Looking at China from Abroad: intermediality as a tool for documentary

Abstract:Abstract In 2020, due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, travel to China and around the world was mostly suspended. In the face of such restrictions, the ‘Looking China Youth Film Project’ took a different approach by inviting students from around the world to make documentary short films in remote mode. This meant employing different expressive resources and a mixed-media format, including techniques such as animation, graphics, typography, photographs, and paintings. The aim of this article is to shed light on this pioneering initiative from the point of view of the relationship between intermediality and forms and functions of the documentary genre. It opens with a discussion around the question of intermediality in the audiovisual media, considering how a realist impulse coexists in the cinema with its mixed-media nature, thus bringing together Bazin’s ontology of the photographic image and his case for cinema as an impure form of art. This is followed by a discussion about the recent field of the ‘animated documentary’, both as a practice and as a theoretical debate, which faces the apparent incongruity between film’s unique ability to record reality – which gave rise to the documentary genre, and animation’s creation of a world without any referent in reality. Finally, it considers the experience of the Looking China Youth Film Programme in 2020, with a special emphasis on six documentary films made from a mixture of live images, animation sequences, graphics and screens. The examples analysed allow me to delve into different aspects of the research on cinema and intermediality, including the animated documentary, the influence of the internet in audiovisual media, and the possibilities of a remote practice of film production.

A Metadata Generation System with Semantic Understanding for Video Retrieval in Film Production

Abstract:In film production, metadata plays an important role in original raw video indexing and classification within the industrial post-production software. Inspired by deep visual-semantic methods, we propose an automated image information extraction process to extend the diversity of metadata entities for massive large-scale raw video searching and retrieval. In this paper, we introduce the proposed system architecture and modules, integrating semantic annotation models and user-demand-oriented information fusion. We conducted experiments to validate the effectiveness of our system on Film Raw Video Semantic Annotation Dataset (Film-RVSAD) and Slate Board Template Dataset (SBTD), two benchmark datasets built for cinematography-related semantic annotation and slate detection. Experimental results show that the proposed system provides an effective strategy to improve the efficiency of metadata generation and transformation, which is necessary and convenient for collaborative work in the filmmaking process.

Abstract:Today, the application of high-tech image format technology in contemporary visual experience and film and television production has become infinitely mature. In the era of the combination of modern technology and the Internet, virtual numbers connect the past with the future, merge reality, and myth and even synchronize the world between primitive and modern. This article adopts experimental analysis and comparative analysis, setting the experimental group and the reference group aim to use high-tech image formats from the perspective of a full-frame sensor to basically realize a perspective screen and a three-dimensional screen for observers in indoor scenes. In addition, the process of reconstructing a 3D model using high-precision geometric information and realistic color information is also described. The experimental results show that the sharpness threshold cannot be too small; otherwise, part of the clear image is misjudged as a blurred image. If the threshold is too large, the missed detection of the blurred image will increase. Combined with the subjective evaluation of the image, when the threshold is 0.8, the experimental result is close subjective evaluation, and the missed detection rate is 2.41%. This shows that the ASODVS three-dimensional digital scene constructed in this article can meet the needs of real-time image processing; it can effectively evaluate the clarity of realistic analog images. It shows that controlling the size of the y coordinate value can affect the user’s visual experience. The smaller the y value in a certain range, the clearer the result can be.
