Abstract:Generally,the carbon cycle in the Earth system can be divided into the short-term surface carbon cycle and the long-term deep carbon cycle.Because＞90％ carbon content is stored in the deep Earth,the deep carbon cycle is a key to understand the origin and process of surface short-term carbon cycle.Three aspects problems such as the metamorphic transformation of carbon-bearing phase in subduction zone,the mechanism of decarbonization and mantle metasomatism have been discussed in details in this review paper.The basic problem of the metamorphic transformation of carbon-bearing phases is still needed to do the extensive research in the future.The decarbonization mechanism including decarbonizing metamorphic reaction,carbon dissolution or fluid infiltration,melt decarbonizing and carbon redox reaction should be the research frontiers' in deep carbon cycle.Meanwhile,the study of deep carbon cycle in subduction zone is very significance for understanding the geochemical mantle heterogeneity.
Abiotic Hydrocarbons Discharge from A Felsic Rock-Hosted Hydrothermal System

Abstract:Abiogenic hydrocarbons are fundamentally important for understanding the deep microbial communities and the origin of life. The generation of abiogenic hydrocarbons was proposed to be limited to ultramafic-hosted hydrothermal systems, fueled by the serpentinization product H2. Here, we present the discharge of short-chain alkanes from an andesitic rock-hosted Lutao geothermal field in the north Luzon arc, carrying abiotic chemical and isotopic signals. These abiogenic hydrocarbons were generated from CO2-H2O-rich fluid inclusions, where the long-term storage since Lutao volcanism (~ 1.3 Ma) allowed overcoming the sluggish kinetics of CO2 to CH4 reduction at temperatures of 174 - 206 oC. Natural abiogenic production of hydrocarbons, therefore, can be more ubiquitous than previously thought. The hypothesis regarding the origin of methane in Earth’s early atmosphere and its implication to the origin of life may require reconsideration.

Abstract:Abiotic methane has been increasingly detected at the surface of Earth and other terrestrial planets, exerting a strong effect on the study of chemolithoautotrophic life and thus astrobiology. In contrast, abiotic methane generation in subduction zones, which is intimately linked to questions such as the mechanisms of deep carbon mobility, has received scarce attention. Experiments elucidated the significant production of abiotic methane through reduction of carbonate minerals under subduction zone conditions, whereas detailed geological conditions and processes for the reduction in natural rocks are hitherto poorly understood. Here, we report carbonate reduction and genesis of abiotic methane in dolomitized serpentinites (referred to as ophidolomites) from a fossil subduction zone (SW Tianshan, China). Detailed petrological, Raman spectroscopic, strontium and carbon isotopic, and thermodynamic results provide evidence for dolomite reduction into the phase assemblage of calcite + brucite + methane, likely associated with retrograde serpentinization starting at 7-9 kbar and 410-430 degrees C in the subduction zone. Microthermometric data for dolomite-hosted fluid inclusions are consistent with petrographic observations, indicative of fluid entrapment postdating the onset of dolomite reduction during exhumation. Model calculations suggest that water-rich fluids characterized by relatively high hydrogen fugacities can create favorable conditions for the reduction process, which, however, do not exclude the possibility of carbonate methanation by hydrogen-rich fluids as reported in previous studies. The widespread occurrence of methane in these rocks gives credence to the intricate redox transformations of subducted carbon, implying that the elevated hydrogen fugacities may facilitate abiotic synthesis of methane through dolomite reduction at convergent plate boundaries. Our work shows that alteration of dolomite-bearing lithologies represents a potential source for abiotic methane in subduction zones, which may have implications for the transfer of subducted carbon. Massive Abiotic Methane Production in Eclogite During Cold Subduction.

Abstract:Methane（CH 4 ） is a critical but overlooked component in the study of the deep carbon cycle.Abiotic CH 4 produced by serpentinization of ultramafic rocks has received extensive attention,but its formation and flux in mafic rocks during subduction remain poorly understood.Here,we report massive CH 4 -rich fluid inclusions in well-zoned garnet from eclogites in Western Tianshan,China.Petrological characteristics and carbon-hydrogen isotopic compositions confirm the abiotic origin of this CH 4 .Reconstructed P-T-fO 2 -fluid trajectories and Deep Earth Water modeling imply that massive abiotic CH 4 was generated during cold subduction at depths of 50-120 km,whereas CO 2 was produced during exhumation.The massive production of abiotic CH 4 in eclogites may result from multiple mechanisms during prograde high pressure-ultrahigh pressure metamorphism.Our flux calculation proposes that abiotic CH 4 that has been formed in HP-UHP eclogites in cold sub duction zones may represent one of the largest,yet overlooked,sources of abiotic CH 4 on Earth.

Abstract:Carbon plays a fundamental role in subduction zones in melting enhancement, magma genesis and evolution, and petrological/thermodynamic processes in the deep Earth. The occurrence state of carbon in the deep Earth is controlled by temperature, depth（pressure）, oxygen fugacity, and fluid property. When carbon of various occurrence states is transported to the deep Earth via subducting slab and then returns to the atmosphere through degassing, the so-called ‘deep carbon cycle’ is realized. Carbonation/decarbonation reactions are the main mechanisms affecting carbon transfer between the solid Earth, the atmosphere, and the oceans. Carbonation processes include silicate weathering, hydrothermal alteration, trench outer-rise serpentinization, organic carbon burial, and reverse weathering; while carbon transport is achieved by subduction of depositional and metasomatic sediments. Surface carbon, when transported to the Earth’s interior, may be retained within the subducting slab, transferred into the upper mantle wedge, or recycled into the deep Earth depending on the depth and redox state under specific tectonic settings; that carbon is then returned to the atmosphere via decarbonation mechanism through volcanic degassing, diffuse degassing in the forearc, dissolution, metamorphism, and melting to maintain a carbon balance at subduction zones. This systematic review summarizes the carbon occurrence states, carbon movements and change of carbon-bearing phases during carbon sequestration, transport, transfer, and degassing relevant to deep carbon cycling and the related carbon fluxes, analyzes the reasons for the inconsistencies in carbon-flux estimates, and discusses future research directions. Since the industrial revolution anthropogenic CO 2 emission has contributed greatly to global warming, exerting extra pressure on Earth as a self-regulating system. In the context of transition to a low-carbon economy, China adheres to energy conservation, carbon emission reduction, and forest growth, and aims to peak CO 2 emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 to address the world climate crisis.

Abstract:More than 98% of the global carbon is stored in the Earth's mantle and the core. The carbon in the Earth's interior could release to the surface by various magmatism, while the carbon on the surface can enter the Earth's interior along with the subduction of plates. Subducting slabs cannot carry all the stored carbon into the deep Earth. Different decarbonization mechanisms will release carbon out of the slabs during the subducting process. The carbon releasing mechanism and the flux in the subduction zones have profound impacts on the concentration of CO2 in the Earth's surface system which could change the habitability of the Earth. Here we summarized five decarbonization mechanisms : metamorphic decarbonization, carbonate dissolution, carbonate melting, sediments diapirism, and redox reaction. On the other hand, the carbon releasing fluxes in the subduction zones are still controversial at present. Therefore, we also reviewed the research progress and the problems for decarbonization mechanism and their flux estimation in the subduction zones to inspire new research methods to make a breakthrough of the deep carbon cycle in subduction zones in the future.
Favorable P–T–ƒO2 Conditions for Abiotic CH4 Production in Subducted Oceanic Crusts: A Comparison Between CH4-bearing Ultrahigh- and CO2-bearing High-Pressure Eclogite

Abstract:Subduction is a key element in the carbon cycle between the Earth's surface and deep interior. In addition to pressure (P) and temperature (T), oxygen fugacity (fO(2)) is an intensive variable that can change the speciation, stability, and mobility of carbon-bearing phases in subduction zones. However, tracking redox evolution and associated carbon speciation in high-pressure metamorphic rocks from subduction zones remains challenging. In this study, we identified CH4-rich fluid inclusions in ultra-high-pressure (UHP; i.e., coesite-bearing) eclogites (the UHP-CH4 eclogite) and CO2-rich fluid inclusions in high-pressure (HP; i.e., quartz-bearing) eclogites (the HP-CO(2 )eclogite) from the Chinese southwestern (SW) Tianshan palaeosubduction zone, respectively. Combining the garnet-clinopyroxene oxybarometry and compre-hensive thermodynamic calculations, we revealed that the fO(2 )of the UHP-CH4 eclogite decreases to a minimum of -FMQ -3 at peak P-T conditions (2.8 GPa, 525 ?) and CH4 is expected to form in graphite-saturated C-H-O fluids. Whereas during the early-exhumation stage (2.5 GPa, 600 ?), the UHP-CH4 eclogite is predicted to buffer higher fO(2 )conditions of -FMQ -0.9. In contrast, the HP-CO2 eclogite, which has a higher bulk CO2 content (-10 wt%) and elevated Fe3+/RFe ratio (0.24) than the UHP-CH4 eclogite, suggesting a stronger oxidative seafloor alteration of the HP-CO2 eclogite protolith before subduction, stabilizes graphite and CO2-rich fluids at peak fO(2) conditions between FMQ and FMQ + 1 (2.6 GPa, 500 ?). These data demonstrate that the thermal structure (P-T conditions) of the sub-duction zone and the composition of the slab are first-order controls on the redox evolution of subducting slabs and the changing speciation of carbon in slab fluids buffered by the metamorphic rock system. Therefore, we propose that the cold subduction of a weakly altered oceanic crust (e.g., UHP-CH4 eclogites from the SW Tianshan) provides ideal conditions for the formation of ultra-deep abiotic CH4. Abstract:Microbial life inhabiting subseafloor sediments plays an important role in Earth's carbon cycle. However, the impact of geodynamic processes on the distributions and carbon-cycling activities of subseafloor life remains poorly constrained. We explore a submarine mud volcano of the Nankai accretionary complex by drilling down to 200 m below the summit. Stable isotopic compositions of water and carbon compounds, including clumped methane isotopologues, suggest that ~90% of methane is microbially produced at 16° to 30°C and 300 to 900 m below seafloor, corresponding to the basin bottom, where fluids in the accretionary prism are supplied via megasplay faults. Radiotracer experiments showed that relatively small microbial populations in deep mud volcano sediments (102 to 103 cells cm-3) include highly active hydrogenotrophic methanogens and acetogens. Our findings indicate that subduction-associated fluid migration has stimulated microbial activity in the mud reservoir and that mud volcanoes may contribute more substantially to the methane budget than previously estimated.

Abstract:Although deep carbon recycling plays an important role in the atmospheric CO2 budget and climate changes through geological time, the precise mechanisms remain poorly understood. Since recycled sedimentary carbonate through plate subduction is the main light-delta Mg-26 reservoir within deep-Earth, Mg isotope variation in mantle-derived melts provides a novel perspective when investigating deep carbon cycling. Here, we show that the Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic continental basalts from 13 regions covering the whole of eastern China have low delta Mg-26 isotopic compositions, while the Early Cretaceous basalts from the same area and the island arc basalts from circum-Pacific subduction zones have mantle-like or heavy Mg isotopic characteristics. Thus, a large-scalemantle low delta Mg-26 anomaly in eastern China has been delineated, suggesting the contribution of sedimentary carbonates recycled into the upper mantle, but limited into the lower mantle. This large-scale spatial and temporal variation ofMg isotopes in the mantle places severe constraints on deep carbon recycling via oceanic subduction.

Abstract:Methane is a pivotal component of the global carbon cycle. It acts both as a potent greenhouse gas and a vital energy source. While the microbial cycling of methane in subsurface environments is crucial, its impact on geological settings and related engineering projects is often underestimated. This review uniquely integrates the latest findings on methane production, oxidation, and migration processes in strata, revealing novel microbial mechanisms and their implications for environmental sustainability. We address critical issues of methane leakage and engineering safety during resource extraction, underscoring the urgent need for effective methane management strategies. This work clarifies geological factors affecting methane budgets and emissions, deepening our understanding of methane dynamics. It offers practical insights for geological engineering and sustainable natural gas hydrate exploration, paving the way for future research and applications.

Abstract:Abstract Plate tectonics plays an essential role in the redistribution of life-essential volatile elements between Earth's interior and surface, whereby our planet has been well tuned to maintain enduring habitability over much of its history. Here we present an overview of deep carbon recycling in the regime of modern plate tectonics, with a special focus on convergent plate margins for assessing global carbon mass balance. The up-to-date flux compilation implies approximate balance between deep carbon outflux and subduction carbon influx within uncertainty but remarkably limited return of carbon to convecting mantle. If correct, carbon would gradually accumulate in the lithosphere over time by (i) massive subsurface carbon storage occurring primarily in continental lithosphere from convergent margins to continental interior and (ii) persistent surface carbon sinks to seafloors sustained by high-flux deep CO2 emissions to the atmosphere. Further assessment of global carbon mass balance requires updates on fluxes of subduction-driven carbon recycling paths and reduction in uncertainty of deep carbon outflux. From a global plate tectonics point of view, we particularly emphasize that continental reworking is an important mechanism for remobilizing geologically sequestered carbon in continental crust and sub-continental lithospheric mantle. In light of recent advances, future research is suggested to focus on a better understanding of the reservoirs, fluxes, mechanisms, and climatic effects of deep carbon recycling following an integrated methodology of observation, experiment, and numerical modeling, with the aim of decoding the self-regulating Earth system and its habitability from the deep carbon recycling perspective.

Abstract:Subduction is a key process for linking the carbon cycle between the Earth’s surface and its interior. Knowing the carbonation and decarbonation processes in the subduction zone is essential for understanding the global deep carbon cycle. In particular, the potential role of hydrocarbon fluids in subduction zones is not well understood and has long been debated. Here we report graphite and light hydrocarbon-bearing inclusions in the carbonated eclogite from the Southwest (S.W.) Tianshan subduction zone, which is estimated to have originated at a depth of at least 80 kilometers. The formation of graphite and light hydrocarbon likely results from the reduction of carbonate under low oxygen fugacity (∼FMQ - 2.5 log units). To better understand the origin of light hydrocarbons, we also investigated the reaction between iron-bearing carbonate and water under conditions relevant to subduction zone environments using large-volume high-pressure apparatus. Our high-pressure experiments provide additional constraints on the formation of abiotic hydrocarbons and graphite/diamond from carbonate-water reduction. In the experimental products, the speciation and concentration of the light hydrocarbons including methane (CH4), ethane (C2H6), and propane (C3H8) were unambiguously determined using gas chromatograph techniques. The formation of these hydrocarbons is accompanied by the formation of graphite and oxidized iron in the form of magnetite (Fe3O4). We observed the identical mineral assemblage (iron-bearing dolomite, magnetite, and graphite) associated with the formation of the hydrocarbons in both naturally carbonated eclogite and the experimental run products, pointing toward the same formation mechanism. The reduction of the carbonates under low oxygen fugacity is, thus, an important mechanism in forming abiotic hydrocarbons and graphite/diamond in the subduction zone settings.
Methane sink of subterranean space in an integrated atmosphere-soil-cave system

Abstract:CH4 serves as an important greenhouse gas, yet limited knowledge is available in global and regional CH4 cycling, particularly in widely distributed karst terrain. In this study, we investigated an upland in Puding Karst Ecosystem Research Station, and explored CH4 concentration and/or flux in atmosphere, soil and cave using a closed static chamber method and an eddy covariance system. Meanwhile, we monitored atmospheric temperature, precipitation, temperature and wind velocity in the cave entrance. The results demonstrated that atmospheric CH4 and actual soil CH4 fluxes in the source area of eddy covariance system were -0.19 ± 8.64 nmols-1m-2 and -0.16 nmols-1m-2 respectively. The CH4 concentrations in Shawan Cave exhibited 10 ∼ 100-fold lower than that of the external atmosphere. CH4 oxidation rate dominated by methane-oxidizing bacteria was 1.98 nmols-1m-2 in Shawan Cave when it combined with temperature difference between cave and external atmosphere. Therefore, CH4 sink in global karst subterranean spaces was estimated at 106.2 Tg CH4 yr-1. We supplemented an understanding of CH4 cycling paths and fluxes in karst terrain, as well as CH4 sinks in karst subterranean space. Further works require to establish a karst ecosystem observation network to conduct long-term integrated studies on CH4 fluxes regarding atmosphere, soils, plants and caves.

Abstract:The Earth surface contains various oxic and anoxic environments. The later include natural wetlands, river and lake sediments, paddy field soils and landfills. In the last few decades, the biogeochemical cycle of carbon in anoxic environments, which leads to the production and emission of methane, a potent greenhouse gas in the atmosphere, has drawn great attentions from both scientific and public sectors. New organisms and mechanisms involved in methanogenesis and carbon cycling have been uncovered. Interspecies electron transfer is considered as a crucial step in methanogenesis in anoxic environments. Electron-carrying mediators, like H-2 and formate, are known to play the key role in electron transfer. Recently, it has been found that in addition to the conventional electron transfer via chemical mediators, direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) can occur. In this Review, we describe the ecology and biogeochemistry of methanogenesis and highlight the effect of microbe-mineral interaction on microbial syntrophy. Recent advances in the study of DIET may pave the way towards a mechanistic understanding of methanogenesis and the influence of microbe-mineral interaction on this process.

Abstract:The aqueous fluids within subducted slabs have the potential to influence the form of carbonate presence and the carbon cycling process. Experiments were performed on resistive heating diamond anvil cell using siderite crystals and grains with water under conditions of pressure as high as 11.4 GPa and temperatures reaching up to 530 °C. These experiments aimed to simulate geological reactions that may occur within a depth range of 340 km in subducted slabs. Raman spectroscopy was employed to monitor the reactions and microscale phenomena within the sample chamber as pressure and temperature increase. The recovered products were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The results indicate that at 0.8 GPa and 108°C, a Fischer-Tropsch Type (FTT) reaction occurred on the sample surface, resulting in the formation of organic compound formaldehyde, followed by the observation of formic acid. At higher pressures and temperatures (3.5 GPa, 420°C), the formation of γ-Fe2O3 and γ-FeOOH was observed on the sample surface, accompanied by the release of CO2 and H2. Transmission electron microscope analysis of the quenched product powders indicated that the generated iron oxides were consistent with the phases observed at high pressure and temperature conditions. High pressure and temperature dissolution experiments of siderite in water reveal that carbon may be released into the mantle wedge entirely in the form of CO2 in warm subducted slabs and cold subducted slabs that subduct to depths of 75 km. The released CO2 participates in the carbon cycle of the island arc volcanic systems in the upper mantle at depths of 70–120 km and accelerates the transfer of subducted carbon to the Earth’s surface.

Abstract:New findings on behaviours of elements and the recycling of a variety of volatile components during plate subduction have been made by the Strategic Priority Research Program (B) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. CeHeO fluids show unexpected immiscibility at subduction zone conditions. First principles simulations reveal that high temperature greatly enhances the tendency of calcium partitioning into silicates, which implies that CaCO3 is unlikely to be the major carbon host in Earth's deep mantle. By integrating the results from this research program and the knowledge from previous studies, a unified picture of the global deep volatile cycle is provided. Carbon is the most important element on Earth, which is the core element of life. It has major influences not only on the climate change, but also on magmatic activities. The Earth's carbon is mainly stored in the mantle and the core in its reduced form such as diamond, graphite and carbide. Based on first-principle calculations and, high pressure experiments and geophysical results so far published, it is suggested that there should be a layer of "carbonate mantle peridotite" at the bottom of the upper mantle. The carbonatized layer may have acted as the source of severe climate fluctuations and mass extinction on the Earth. These progresses provide us a better understanding on the interactions between the Earth's interior and surface through plate subduction and mantle plume. Carbon Recycled into Deep Earth: Evidence from Dolomite Dissociation in Subduction-Zone Rocks

Abstract:The dolomite-dissociation textures documented here in rocks from the Kokchetav ultrahigh-pressure massif suggest that the experimentally expected dolomite dissociation happened in the subducted slabs represented by these rocks. Two reactions, magnesite = C + MgO + O-2, and majoritic garnet + MgO + H2O = garnet + clinochlore, recorded in carbonate inclusions and the host majoritic garnet are responsible for generation of graphite and clinochlore during the exhumation. The dolomite dissociation indicates that carbonate materials were subducted to depths of >250 km below Earth's surface. Such deep subduction evidently brings abundant carbon and carbonate into deep Earth.

Abstract:Subduction zones metamorphic fluids are pivotal in geological events such as volcanic eruptions, seismic activity, mineralization, and the deep carbon cycle. However, the mechanisms governing carbon mobility in subduction zones remain largely unresolved. Here we present the first observations of immiscible H 2 O-CH 4 fluids coexisting in retrograde carbonated eclogite from the Western Tianshan subduction zone, China. We identified two types of fluid inclusions in host ankerite and amphibole, as well as in garnet and omphacite. Type-1 inclusions are water-rich with CH 4 vapor, whereas Type-2 are CH 4 -rich, with minimal or no H 2 O. The coexistence of these fluid types indicates the presence of immiscible fluid phases under high-pressure conditions (P = 1.3-2.1 GPa). Carbonates in subduction zones can effectively decompose through reactions with silicates, leading to the generation of abiotic CH 4 . Our findings suggest that substantial amounts of carbon could be transferred from the slab to mantle wedge as immiscible CH 4 fluids. This process significantly enhances decarbonation efficiency and may contribute to the formation of natural gas deposits.

Subducting Indian lithosphere controls the deep carbon emission in Lhasa terrane, southern Tibet

Abstract:The India‐Asia orogenic zone is considered to participate significantly in the Earth's geological carbon budget. However, the carbon cycling process at orogenic belts with ongoing continental subduction is poorly constrained. Here, new He‐C‐N systematics of hydrothermal gases in Lhasa terrane are reported to explore carbon cycling and the role of the subducting Indian slab. Except for samples where the CO2 content and C isotopic signature were modified by calcite precipitation, gas samples in Lhasa terrane display low 3He/4He ratios of 0.015‐0.895 RA but with increasing mantle helium input from south to north. Our modeling results show that the continuous subduction of the Indian continental slab has caused high Th‐U contents and time‐integrated 4He production rates in the present mantle wedge beneath the Lhasa terrane. The N‐S helium isotopic trend can be interpreted as a northward‐decreasing mantle enrichment. Compared to volatiles showing crustal helium but mantle‐like δ13C ratios, mantle helium‐richer fluids display heavier δ13C ratios, higher CO2/3He and molar C/N values, indicating a substantial carbonate input. We propose that the heavier carbon isotopes are inherited from the carbonated‐enriched mantle (CEM) rather than the carbonate assimilation of the overlying continental crust. Combined with an eastward increase in dip angle of the Indian lithosphere, we suggest that the slab rollback has caused asthenosphere heat flow and consequent decarbonation in CEM beneath northern and eastern Lhasa terrane, leading to enhanced isotopically‐heavier carbon release. Our study highlights the controlling role of subducting Indian lithosphere on the regional distribution of volatiles in the Lhasa terrane.
