Abstract:This paper proposes a novel controller based on the fuzzy logic soft computing technique. It is realized discretely by transforming the conventional Proportional plus Integral plus Derivative (PID) controller in the s-domain to the z-domain using a bilinear transformation (BLT). Thus, the proposed controller is termed as FPID(BLT) controller. The proposed controller has been evaluated for regulating a highly nonlinear Active Suspension System (ASS) with an electro-hydraulic actuator of a quarter car under various road conditions. The used road inputs include the road roughness profiles categorized as 'Class A–to–Class E' as per ISO 8608:2016 with and without defective road faults such as bumps. Since the primary aim of any vehicle is to enhance passengers' ride comfort, the root means square of vertical acceleration of the vehicle body has been minimized. At the same time, hard constraints such as actuator saturation limit, road holding capability, and suspension travel have been preserved. The performance of the proposed FPID(BLT) controller is compared with another fuzzy PID controller, which is obtained by transforming a conventional PID controller in the s-domain to the z-domain by employing backward difference approximation (BDA), i.e. FPID(BDA). The scaling factors of both FLCs were optimized offline using the Backtracking Search Algorithm optimization technique for a road input having a 'Class-C' road roughness profile without any fault. Due to the random nature of road input, the simulation was run 50 times, and a statistical analysis of the cost function obtained for each run was performed. The FLCs gains were chosen for cost function close to mean value. Further, FLCs were assessed for 'Class A-to-Class E' road roughness profile with and without bump fault. The exhaustive simulation investigations thus revealed that FPID(BLT) controller outperforms FPID(BDA) controller in each investigation and considerably improves ride comfort while maintaining all hard constraints.
