Abstract:Selective electroreduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 RR) into ethanol at an industrially relevant current density is highly desired. However, it is challenging because the competing ethylene production pathway is generally more thermodynamically favored. Herein, we achieve a selective and productive ethanol production over a porous CuO catalyst that presents a high ethanol Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 44.1 ± 1.0% and an ethanol-to-ethylene ratio of 1.2 at a large ethanol partial current density of 501.0 ± 15.0 mA cm −2 , in addition to an extraordinary FE of 90.6 ± 3.4% for multicarbon products. Intriguingly, we found a volcano-shaped relationship between ethanol selectivity and nanocavity size of porous CuO catalyst in the range of 0 to 20 nm. Mechanistic studies indicate that the increased coverage of surface-bounded hydroxyl species (*OH) associated with the nanocavity size-dependent confinement effect contributes to the remarkable ethanol selectivity, which preferentially favors the *CHCOH hydrogenation to *CHCHOH (ethanol pathway) via yielding the noncovalent interaction. Our findings provide insights in favoring the ethanol formation pathway, which paves the path toward rational design of ethanol-oriented catalysts.

Abstract:The multi‐electron reduction of CO 2 to hydrocarbons or alcohols is highly attractive in a sustainable energy economy, and the rational design of electrocatalysts is vital to achieve these reactions efficiently. Single‐atom electrocatalysts are promising candidates due to their well‐defined coordination configurations and unique electronic structures, which are critical for delivering high activity and selectivity and may accelerate the explorations of the activity origin at atomic level as well. Although much effort has been devoted to multi‐electron reduction of CO 2 on single‐atom electrocatalysts, there are still no reviews focusing on this emerging field and constructive perspectives are also urgent to be addressed. Herein recent advances in how to design efficient single‐atom electrocatalysts for multi‐electron reduction of CO 2 , with emphasis on strategies in regulating the interactions between active sites and key reaction intermediates, are summarized. Such interactions are crucial in designing active sites for optimizing the multi‐electron reduction steps and maximizing the catalytic performance. Different design strategies including regulation of metal centers, single‐atom alloys, non‐metal single‐atom catalysts, and tandem catalysts, are discussed accordingly. Finally, current challenges and future opportunities for deep electroreduction of CO 2 are proposed.

Abstract:Electrochemical CO2 reduction is a sustainable method for producing multicarbon alcohols. However, the selectivity of alcohols is limited owing to the favorable side reaction to convert the key intermediate of *CH2CHO into ethylene. This study describes the design of a Cu electrocatalyst with abundant step sites to suppress the deoxygenation of *CH2CHO to ethylene, thereby promoting alcohol production. A Faradic efficiency of 40.5% and partial current density of 56.3 mA/cm2 for alcohols are achieved. Moreover, the alcohols/C2H4 ratio in the products reaches approximately 2.2. In-situ infrared spectrum characterizations and theoretical calculations reveal that the step sites facilitate C–C coupling and direct the reaction pathway to promote the formation of alcohols by inhibiting the cleavage of the C–O bond in *CH2CHO. Therefore, the proposed strategy is efficient for designing active sites to steer reaction pathways in CO2 electroreductions and produce alcohols.

Abstract:Electrochemical conversion of CO 2 into liquid fuels such as ethanol, powered by renewable electricity, is an efficient strategy for CO 2 utilization to produce high value-added products. In this work, we discovered that the primary C2+ product could be switched from gaseous ethylene to liquid ethanol by directly elevating the CO 2 pressure when Cu 2 O@Cu with hollow sphere morphology was adopted as the catalyst. The Faradaic efficiency (FE) of ethanol reached as high as 36.6% at a low overpotential of -1.0 V vs. Ag/AgCl (-0.48 V vs. RHE) under 100 bar, which was 4.6 times higher than that of 1 bar. Moreover, faster kinetics and lower overpotential for ethanol formation were obtained under high CO 2 pressure. In-situ Raman spectroscopy studies under different pressures in combination with density functional theory calculations demonstrated that the *CO surface coverage was increased significantly under the increased CO 2 pressure, which is responsible for facilitating the ethanol formation during the electrochemical CO 2 RR. This study provides a novel and promising strategy for the selective production of ethanol on Cu-based catalyst by facilely adjusting the CO 2 pressure.

Selective Increase in CO2 Electroreduction to Ethanol Activity at Nanograin‐Boundary‐Rich Mixed Cu(I)/Cu(0) Sites via Enriching Co‐Adsorbed CO and Hydroxyl Species

Abstract:Selective producing ethanol from CO2 electroreduction is highly demanded, yet the competing ethylene generation route is commonly more thermodynamically preferred. Herein, we reported an efficient CO2-to-ethanol conversion (53.5% faradaic efficiency at −0.75 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE)) over an oxide-derived nanocubic catalyst featured with abundant "embossment-like" structured grain-boundaries. The catalyst also attains a 23.2% energy efficiency to ethanol within a flow cell reactor. In situ spectroscopy and electrochemical analysis identified that these dualphase Cu(I) and Cu(0) sites stabilized by grain-boundaries are very robust over the operating potential window, which maintains a high concentration of co-adsorbed *CO and hydroxyl (*OH) species. Theoretical calculations revealed that the presence of *OHad not only promote the easier dimerization of *CO to form *OCCO (ΔG ~ 0.20 eV) at low overpotentials but also preferentially favor the key *CHCOH intermediate hydrogenation to *CHCHOH (ethanol pathway) while suppressing its dehydration to *CCH (ethylene pathway), which is believed to determine the remarkable ethanol selectivity. Such imperative intermediates associated with the bifurcation pathway were directly distinguished by isotope labelling in situ infrared spectroscopy. Our work promotes the understanding of bifurcating mechanism of CO2ER-to-hydrocarbons more deeply, providing a feasible strategy for the design of efficient ethanol-targeted catalysts.

Abstract:Electrochemical reduction offers promise for converting CO2 into a range of hydrocarbons and oxygenates, yet the production of alcohols remains an ongoing challenge. The elusive understanding of the underlying factors governing alcohol selectivity has hindered the optimization of alcohol yields. Herein, we clarify the insight mechanism of enhanced ethanol selectivity over modified copper catalysts via explicit solvent models combined with slow-growth molecular dynamics. The surface-active hydrogen, introduced by guest metals and high-facet atomic arrangements, emerges as a pivotal factor in promoting the kinetics of surface-coupled hydrogenation of intermediates while indirectly inhibiting solvent hydrogenation of intermediates. This intricate interplay unlocks the reaction pathway toward ethanol products. Moreover, the evaluation of hydrogen activity allows rapid screening of a Cu-based catalyst aiming for alcohols, and the qualitative agreement with available experimental results, in turn, confirms the rationality of the mechanism. This study discloses that promoting surface-coupled hydrogenation and suppressing solvent hydrogenation are two fundamental strategies to improve alcohol selectivity, which provides insights into the design of catalytic systems for electrochemical CO2 reduction with desired products.

Abstract:The mechanism of how interfacial wettability impacts the CO 2 electroreduction pathways to ethylene and ethanol remains unclear. This paper describes the design and realization of controllable equilibrium of kinetic-controlled *CO and *H via modifying alkanethiols with different alkyl chain lengths to reveal its contribution to ethylene and ethanol pathways. Characterization and simulation reveal that the mass transport of CO 2 and H 2 O is related with interfacial wettability, which may result in the variation of kinetic-controlled *CO and *H ratio, which affects ethylene and ethanol pathways. Through modulating the hydrophilic interface to superhydrophobic interface, the reaction limitation shifts from insufficient supply of kinetic-controlled *CO to that of *H. The ethanol to ethylene ratio can be continuously tailored in a wide range from 0.9 to 1.92, with remarkable Faradaic efficiencies toward ethanol and multi-carbon (C 2+ ) products up to 53.7% and 86.1%, respectively. A C 2+ Faradaic efficiency of 80.3% can be achieved with a high C 2+ partial current density of 321 mA cm −2 , which is among the highest selectivity at such current densities.

Abstract:Efficient CO2 electroreduction (CO2RR) to ethanol holds promise to generate value-added chemicals and harness renewable energy simultaneously. Yet, it remains an ongoing challenge due to the competition with thermodynamically more preferred ethylene production. Herein, we presented a CO2 reduction predilection switch from ethylene to ethanol (ethanol-to-ethylene ratio of ~5.4) by inherently implanting Cu sites with perfluorooctane to create interfacial non-covalent interactions. The 1.83%F-Cu2O organic-inorganic hybrids (OIHs) exhibited an extraordinary ethanol faradaic efficiency (FEethanol) of ∼55.2%, with an impressive ethanol partial current density of 166 mA cm-2 and excellent robustness over 60 hours of continuous operation. This exceptional performance ranks our 1.83%F-Cu2O OIHs among the best-performing ethanol-oriented CO2RR electrocatalysts. Our findings identified that C8F18 could strengthen the interfacial hydrogen bonding connectivity, which consequently promotes the generation of active hydrogen species and preferentially favors the hydrogenation of *CHCOH to *CHCHOH, thus switching the reaction from ethylene-preferred to ethanol-oriented. The presented investigations highlight opportunities for using noncovalent interactions to tune the selectivity of CO2 electroreduction to ethanol, bringing it closer to practical implementation requirements.

Abstract:The carbon dioxide electroreduction reaction (CO2RR) provides ways to produce ethanol but its Faradaic efficiency could be further improved, especially in CO2RR studies reported at a total current density exceeding 10 mA cm−2. Here we report a class of catalysts that achieve an ethanol Faradaic efficiency of (52 ± 1)% and an ethanol cathodic energy efficiency of 31%. We exploit the fact that suppression of the deoxygenation of the intermediate HOCCH* to ethylene promotes ethanol production, and hence that confinement using capping layers having strong electron-donating ability on active catalysts promotes C–C coupling and increases the reaction energy of HOCCH* deoxygenation. Thus, we have developed an electrocatalyst with confined reaction volume by coating Cu catalysts with nitrogen-doped carbon. Spectroscopy suggests that the strong electron-donating ability and confinement of the nitrogen-doped carbon layers leads to the observed pronounced selectivity towards ethanol.

Abstract:The electrochemical conversion of carbon monoxide (CO) into oxygenated C2+ products at high rates and selectivity offers a promising approach for the two-step conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2). However, a major drawback of the CO electrochemical reduction in alkaline electrolyte is the preference for the acetate pathway over the more valuable ethanol pathway. Recent research has shed light on the significant impact of thermodynamic water activity on the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction pathways, but less is understood for the electrochemical reduction of CO. In this study, we investigated how the water activity at the electrified interface can be enhanced to adjust the selectivity between acetate and ethanol. We employed an ionomer modifier to lower the local concentration of alkali ions (via Donnan exclusion), successfully enhancing ethanol production while suppressing acetate formation. We observed a remarkable improvement in the Faradaic efficiency of ethanol and alcohol (i.e. ethanol, propanol etc), which reached 42.5% and 55.1%, respectively, at a current density of 700 mA cm-2. The partial current densities of ethanol and alcohol reached 698 and 942 mA cm-2 at 2000 mA cm-2. Furthermore, we achieved a 3.7-fold increase in the ethanol/acetate ratio, providing clear evidence of our successful modulation of product selectivity.

Abstract:The manuscript designs a hollow cuprous oxide protected by a thin N‐doped carbon shell (H–Cu2O@C/N) as an efficient nanoreactor to stabilize the Cu+ species and enhance the coverage concentration of *CO on the local catalyst surface under the spatial confinement effect, which efficiently accelerates C–C coupling to generate C2+ products. Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction offers a promising pathway to transform renewable electricity into value‐added fuels and feedstocks in the form of chemical energy. However, the *CO intermediates tend to obtain protons or electrons to generate C1 products. The Cu+, an active catalytic site for C2+ products, is easily reduced to Cu0 at cathodic potentials. Herein, a hollow cuprous oxide protected by a thin N‐doped carbon shell (H–Cu2O@C/N) as an efficient nanoreactor to stabilize the Cu+ species and enhance the coverage concentration of *CO on the local catalyst surface under the spatial confinement effect is designed, which efficiently accelerates C–C coupling to generate C2+ products. As a result, H–Cu2O@C/N exhibits an outstanding C2+ Faradaic efficiency of 75.9% with a partial current density of 248.8 mA cm−2 in the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) electrolyzer. Density functional theory combined with operando characterizations confirm that the N‐doped carbon layer protects the Cu+ active species from electrochemical reduction, and the high coverage density of *CO from spatial confinement effect lowers the reaction barrier of *CH2CHO, thereby promoting C–C coupling. This work offers invaluable insights into the spatial confinement effect for boosting the steering C–C coupling in Cu‐based catalysts for efficient electroreduction of CO2 to C2+ products.

Abstract:The electroreduction of CO 2 has recently achieved notable progress in the formation of C 2 products such as ethylene and ethanol. However, the direct synthesis of C 3 products is considerably limited by the C 2 –C 1 coupling reaction and the faradaic efficiency has remained low. Here we present a supersaturation strategy for the electrosynthesis of 2-propanol from CO 2 in highly carbonated electrolytes. By controlling the CO 2 concentration above the saturation limit, we have developed a co-electrodeposition method with suppressed galvanic replacement to obtain a CuAg alloy catalyst. In supersaturated conditions, the alloy achieved high performance for the production of 2-propanol with a faradaic efficiency of 56.7% and at a specific current density of 59.3 mA cm −2 . Our investigations revealed that the presence of dispersed Ag atoms in Cu weakens the surface binding of intermediates in the middle position of the alkyl chain and strengthens the C–O bonds, which favours the formation of 2-propanol over 1-propanol.

Abstract:The asymmetrically coordinated Cu dual‐atom sites with CuN2‐CuNS moiety exhibits excellent electrocatalytic CO2RR performances. The asymmetrical electron cloud distribution around the CuN2‐CuNS of the asymmetrically coordinated Cu dual‐atom catalyst destabilizes the ethylene reaction intermediates and thereby promotes ethanol production. Electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CO2RR) to value‐added liquid fuels is a highly attractive solution for carbon‐neutral recycling, especially for C2+ products. However, the selectivity control to preferable products is a great challenge due to the complex multi‐electron proton transfer process. In this work, a series of Cu atomic dispersed catalysts are synthesized by regulating the coordination structures to optimize the CO2RR selectivity. Cu2‐SNC catalyst with a uniquely asymmetrical coordinated CuN2‐CuNS site shows high ethanol selective with the FE of 62.6% at −0.8 V versus RHE and 60.2% at 0.9 V versus RHE in H‐Cell and Flow‐Cell test, respectively. Besides, the nest‐like structure of Cu2‐SNC is beneficial to the mass transfer process and the selection of catalytic products. In situ experiments and theory calculations reveal the reaction mechanisms of such high selectivity of ethanol. The S atoms weaken the bonding ability of the adjacent Cu to the carbon atom, which accelerates the selection from *CHCOH to generate *CHCHOH, resulting in the high selectivity of ethanol. This work indicates a promising strategy in the rational design of asymmetrically coordinated single, dual, or tri‐atom catalysts and provides a candidate material for CO2RR to produce ethanol.

Abstract:The electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) to valuable chemicals is gaining significant attention as a pragmatic solution for achieving carbon neutrality and storing renewable energy in a usable form. Recent research increasingly focuses on designing electrocatalysts that specifically convert CO2 into ethanol, a desirable product due to its high-energy density, ease of storage, and portability. However, achieving high-efficiency ethanol production remains a challenge compared to ethylene (a competing product with a similar electron configuration). Existing electrocatalytic systems often suffer from limitations such as low energy efficiency, poor stability, and inadequate selectivity toward ethanol. Inspired by recent progress in the field, this review explores fundamental principles and material advancements in CO2 electroreduction, emphasizing strategies for ethanol production over ethylene. We discuss electrocatalyst design, reaction mechanisms, challenges, and future research directions. These advancements aim to bridge the gap between current research and industrialized applications of this technology.
Solar-driven CO2-to-ethanol conversion enabled by continuous CO2 transport via a superhydrophobic Cu2O nano fence

Abstract:The overall photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction presents an eco-friendly approach for generating high-value products, specifically ethanol. However, ethanol production still faces efficiency issues (typically formation rates ˂ 605 μmol g-1 h-1). One significant challenge arises from the difficulty of continuously transporting CO2 to the catalyst surface, leading to inadequate gas reactant concentration at reactive sites. Here, we develop a mesoporous superhydrophobic Cu2O hollow structure (O-CHS) for efficient gas transport. O-CHS is designed to float on the aqueous solution and act as a nano fence, effectively impeding water infiltration into its inner space and enabling CO2 accumulation within. As CO2 is consumed at reactive sites, O-CHS serves as a gas transport channel and diffuser, continuously and promptly conveying CO2 from the gas phase to the reactive sites. This ensures a stable high CO2 concentration at reactive sites. Consequently, O-CHS achieves the highest recorded ethanol formation rate (996.18 μmol g-1 h-1) to the best of our knowledge. This strategy combines surface engineering with geometric modulation, providing a promising pathway for multi-carbon production.

Abstract:Abstract Electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide into ethylene, as opposed to traditional industrial methods, represents a more environmentally friendly and promising technical approach. However, achieving high activity of ethylene remains a huge challenge due to the numerous possible reaction pathways. Here, we construct a hierarchical nanoelectrode composed of CuO treated with dodecanethiol to achieve elevated ethylene activity with a Faradaic efficiency reaching 79.5%. Through on in situ investigations, it is observed that dodecanethiol modification not only facilitates CO 2 transfer and enhances *CO coverage on the catalyst surfaces, but also stabilizes Cu(100) facet. Density functional theory calculations of activation energy barriers of the asymmetrical C–C coupling between *CO and *CHO further support that the greatly increased selectivity of ethylene is attributed to the thiol-stabilized Cu(100). Our findings not only provide an effective strategy to design and construct Cu-based catalysts for highly selective CO 2 to ethylene, but also offer deep insights into the mechanism of CO 2 to ethylene.

Abstract:The electroreduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) and carbon monoxide (CO) to liquid alcohol is of significant research interest. This is because of a high mass-energy density, readiness for transportation and established utilization infrastructure. Current success is mainly around monohydric alcohols, such as methanol and ethanol. There exist few reports on converting CO2 or CO to higher-valued diols such as ethylene glycol (EG; (CH2OH)2). The challenge to producing diols lies in the requirement to retain two oxygen atoms in the compound. Here for the first time, we demonstrate that densely-arrayed Cu nanopyramids (Cu-DAN) are able to retain two oxygen atoms for hydroxyl formation. This results in selective electroreduction of CO2 or CO to diols. Density Functional Theory (DFT) computations highlight that the unique spatial-confinement induced by Cu-DAN is crucial to selectively generating EG through a new reaction pathway. This structure promotes C-C coupling with a decreased reaction barrier. Following C-C coupling the structure facilitates EG production by (1) retaining oxygen and promoting the *COH-CHO pathway, which is a newly identified pathway toward ethylene glycol production; and, (2) suppressing the carbon-oxygen bond breaking in intermediate *CH2OH-CH2O and boosting hydrogenation to EG. Our findings will be of immediate interest to researchers in the design of highly active and selective CO2 and CO electroreduction to diols.
