Abstract:Plant has formed a variety of inherent defense mechanisms in its long-term adaptation process with the complex habitat.For phytophagous insects,the plant's inherent defense system is mainly related to plant morphological characteristics and secondary metabolites,and its mechanisms can be classified into constitutive defense mechanism and induced defense mechanism.The effect of plant characteristics on insects was reviewed in this article,including the plant's hair,wax,leaf profile,and leaf color and so on.The effect of volatile or non-volatile secondary metabolites on phytophagous insects was also summarized.Finally,the perspective of practical application of constitutive defense system is proposed as well.
Plant secondary metabolites: a key driver of litter decomposition and soil nutrient cycling

Abstract:A broad and diversified group of compounds, secondary metabolites, are known to govern species interactions in ecosystems. Recent studies have shown that secondary metabolites can also play a major role in ecosystem processes, such as plant succession or in the process of litter decomposition, by governing the interplay between plant matter and soil organisms. We reviewed the ecological role of the three main classes of secondary metabolites and the methodological challenges and novel avenues for their study. We highlight emerging general patterns of the impacts of secondary metabolites on decomposer communities and litter decomposition and argue for the consideration of secondary compounds as key drivers of soil functioning and ecosystem functioning. Synthesis. Gaining a greater understanding of plant–soil organisms relationships and underlying mechanisms, including the role of secondary metabolites, could improve our ability to understand ecosystem processes. We outline some promising directions for future research that would stimulate studies aiming to understand the interactions of secondary metabolites across a range of spatio‐temporal scales. Detailed mechanistic knowledge could help us to develop models for the process of litter decomposition and nutrient cycling in ecosystems and help us to predict future impacts of global changes on ecosystem functioning. Plant secondary metabolites (PSM) have a major influence on litter decomposition principally through their impacts on the activity of soil organisms. In this review, we present examples of key studies where PSM underpin mechanisms driving variation in decomposition processes and nutrient cycling. We argue that studies covering interactions of PSM across a range of spatio‐temporal scales (organisms, communities and ecosystem) are needed to further understand their importance in ecosystems.

Abstract:An important challenge in the study of ecosystem function is resolving how plant antiherbivore chemical defence expression may influence plant-associated microbes, and nutrient release. We report on a factorial experiment that explores a mechanism underlying this interplay using individuals of the perennial plant Tansy that vary genotypically in the chemical content of their antiherbivore defenses (chemotypes). We assessed to what extent soil and its associated microbial community versus chemotype-specific litter determined the composition of the soil microbial community. Microbial diversity profiles revealed sporadic effects of chemotype litter and soil combinations. Soil source and litter type both explained the microbial communities decomposing the litter with soil source having a more important effect. Some microbial taxa are related to particular chemotypes, and thus intra-specific chemical variation of a single plant chemotype can shape the litter microbial community. But we found that ultimately the effect of fresh litter inputs from a chemotype appeared to act secondary as a filter on the composition of the microbial community, with the primary factor being the existing microbial community in the soil.

Abstract:Decomposition of plant litter is a fundamental ecosystem process that can act as a feedback to climate change by simultaneously influencing both the productivity of ecosystems and the flux of carbon dioxide from the soil. The influence of climate on decomposition from a postsenescence perspective is relatively well known; in particular, climate is known to regulate the rate of litter decomposition via its direct influence on the reaction kinetics and microbial physiology on processes downstream of tissue senescence. Climate can alter plant metabolism during the formative stage of tissues and could shape the final chemical composition of plant litter that is available for decomposition, and thus indirectly influence decomposition; however, these indirect effects are relatively poorly understood. Climatic stress disrupts cellular homeostasis in plants and results in the reprogramming of primary and secondary metabolic pathways, which leads to changes in the quantity, composition, and organization of small molecules and recalcitrant heteropolymers, including lignins, tannins, suberins, and cuticle within the plant tissue matrix. Furthermore, by regulating metabolism during tissue senescence, climate influences the resorption of nutrients from senescing tissues. Thus, the final chemical composition of plant litter that forms the substrate of decomposition is a combined product of presenescence physiological processes through the production and resorption of metabolites. The changes in quantity, composition, and localization of the molecular construct of the litter could enhance or hinder tissue decomposition and soil nutrient cycling by altering the recalcitrance of the lignocellulose matrix, the composition of microbial communities, and the activity of microbial exo-enzymes via various complexation reactions. Also, the climate-induced changes in the molecular composition of litter could differentially influence litter decomposition and soil nutrient cycling. Compared with temperate ecosystems, the indirect effects of climate on litter decomposition in the tropics are not well understood, which underscores the need to conduct additional studies in tropical biomes. We also emphasize the need to focus on how climatic stress affects the root chemistry as roots contribute significantly to biogeochemical cycling, and on utilizing more robust analytical approaches to capture the molecular composition of tissue matrix that fuel microbial metabolism.

Abstract:The decomposition of litter carbon (C) fraction is a major determinant of soil organic matter pool and nutrient cycling. However, knowledge of litter chemical traits regulate C fractions release is still relatively limited. A litterbag experiment was conducted using six plant functional litter types at two vegetation type (coniferous forest and alpine shrubland) in a treeline ecotone. We evaluated the relative importance of litter chemistry (i.e. Nutrient, C quality, and stoichiometry) on the loss of litter mass, non-polar extractables (NPE), water-soluble extractables (WSE), acid-hydrolyzable carbohydrates (ACID), and acid-unhydrolyzable residue (AUR) during decomposition. Litter nutrients contain nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg), aluminium (Al), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe) and copper (Cu), litter C quality contains C, WSE, NPE, ACID, and AUR, and stoichiometry was defined by C:N, C:P; N:P, ACID:N, and AUR:N. The results showed single exponential model fitted decomposition rates of litter mass and C fractions better than double exponential or asymptotic decomposition, and the decomposition rates of C fractions were strongly correlated with initial litter nutrients, especially K, Na, Ca. Furthermore, the temporal dynamics of litter nutrients (Ca, Mg, Na, K, Zn, and Fe) strongly regulated C fractions loss during the decomposition process. Changes in litter C quality had an evident effect on the degradation of ACID and AUR, supporting the concept of "priming effect" of soluble carbon fraction. The significant differences were found in the release of NPE, WSE, and ACID rather than AUR among coniferous forest and alpine shrubland, and the vegetation type effects largely depend on the changes in litter stoichiometry, which is an important implication for the change in plant community abundance regulate decay. Collectively, elucidating the hierarchical drivers of litter chemistry on decomposition is critical to soil C sequestration in alpine ecosystems.

Abstract:Having a pivotal role in biogeochemical cycles, litter decomposition affects plant growth and regeneration by inducing the release of allelochemicals. The aim of this study was to assess the role of the microbiota in modulating the allelopathic effects of freshly fallen and decomposed leaf litter. To disentangle the chemical and microbial effects, bioassays were carried out on four target plants in sterile and non-sterile conditions. All litter types were characterized by carbon-13 cross polarization magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (13C-CPMAS NMR) spectroscopy, and the associated fungal and bacterial microbiota were described by next-generation sequencing. When the litter extract was sterilized, freshly fallen litter severely inhibited the plant root growth, but during decomposition, the allelopathic effect rapidly decreased. Root growth was negatively correlated with extractable carbon and positively correlated with parameters associated with tissue lignification. In non-sterile conditions, the living microbiota modulated the leaf litter allelopathic effects of mitigation (26.5% of cases) and exacerbation (26.6% of cases). The mitigation effect was more frequent and intense in stressful conditions, i.e., highly phytotoxic freshly fallen litter, than in benign environments, i.e., decomposed litter. Finally, we identified specific bacterial and fungal operational taxonomic units (OTUs) that could be involved in the mediation of the litter allelopathic effect. This study highlights the importance of studying allelopathy in both sterile conditions and in the presence of a living microbiota to assess the role of litter chemistry and the potential impact of plant detritus on the agro-ecosystem and natural plant communities.

Abstract:As soils store more carbon (C) than the Earth's atmosphere and terrestrial biomass together, the balance between soil C uptake in the form of soil organic matter and release as CO2 upon its decomposition is a critical determinant in the global C cycle regulating our planet's climate. Although plant litter is the predominant source of C fuelling both soil C build‐up and losses, the issue of how litter chemistry influences this balance remains unresolved. As a contribution to solving that issue, we traced the fate of C during near‐complete decomposition of 13C‐labelled leaf and root litters from 12 plant species in a coarse‐textured soil. We separated the soil organic carbon (SOC) into mineral‐associated organic matter (MAOM) and particulate organic matter (POM) pools, and investigated how 14 litter chemical traits affected novel SOC formation and native SOC mineralization (i.e., the priming effect) in these soil fractions. We observed an overall net increase in SOC due to the addition of litter, which was stronger for root than for leaf litters. The presumed stable MAOM‐C pool underwent both substantial stabilisation and mineralization, whereas the presumably less stable POM‐C pool showed substantial stabilisation and reduced mineralization. Overall, the initial increase in soil C mineralization was fully counterbalanced by a later decrease in native soil C mineralization. POM‐C formation as well as MAOM‐C formation and mineralization were positively related to the initial litter lignin concentration and negatively to that of the nitrogen leachates, whereas the opposite was observed for POM‐C mineralization. Synthesis. Our results highlight the importance of litter chemical traits for SOC formation, and stabilisation, destabilisation, and mineralization. In our coarse‐textured soil, the amount of MAOM‐C did not change despite large C fluxes through this pool. The litter chemical traits that drove these processes differed from those frequently reported for fine‐textured soils far from mineral‐associated C saturation. To account for these discrepancies, we propose an integrative perspective in which litter quality and soil texture interactively control soil C fluxes by modulating several SOC stabilisation and destabilisation mechanisms. Irrespective, our results open new critical perspectives for managing soil C pools globally.

Tree phylogeny predicts more than litter chemical components in explaining enzyme activities in forest leaf litter decomposition

Abstract:Litter decomposition is an important process in ecosystem and despite recent research elucidating the significant influence of plant phylogeny on plant-associated microbial communities, it remains uncertain whether a parallel correlation exists between plant phylogeny and the community of decomposers residing in forest litter. In this study, we conducted a controlled litterbag experiment using leaf litter from ten distinct tree species in a central subtropical forest ecosystem in a region characterized by subtropical humid monsoon climate in China. The litterbags were placed in situ using a random experimental design and were collected after 12 months of incubation. Then, the litter chemical properties, microbial community composition and activities of enzyme related to the decomposition of organic carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) were assessed. Across all ten tree species, Alphaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, and Actinobacteria were identified as the predominant bacterial classes, while the primary fungal classes were Dothideomycetes, Sordariomycetes and Eurotiomycetes. Mantel test revealed significant correlations between litter chemical component and microbial communities, as well as enzyme activities linked to N and C metabolism. However, after controlling for plant phylogenetic distance in partial Mantel test, the relationships between litter chemical component and microbial community structure and enzyme activities were not significant. Random forest and structural equation modeling indicated that plant phylogenetic distance exerted a more substantial influence than litter chemical components on microbial communities and enzyme activities associated with the decomposition of leaf litter. In summary, plant phylogenic divergence was found to be a more influential predictor of enzyme activity variations than microbial communities and litter traits, which were commonly considered reliable indicators of litter decomposition and ecosystem function, thereby highlighting the previously underestimated significance of plant phylogeny in shaping litter microbial communities and enzyme activities associated with degradation processes in forest litter.

Abstract:<p>Plant litter-derived dissolved compounds leaching is an important process for soil carbon (C) sequestration and nutrient cycling. However, knowledge of the biotic and abiotic drivers of dissolved compound release from litter mixture remains limited. Here, we evaluated the loss of soluble C, N, and P during litter mixtures decomposition across an alpine treeline ecotone, and we sought to assess the relative importance of environmental conditions, litter diversity (functional dissimilarity (Rao) and community-weighted mean (CWM) traits), litter chemistry (C quality, nutrients, and stoichiometry) and microbe drive dissolved compound release during the decomposition process. The results showed that dissolved compound release from litter mixtures deviated from predictions based on litter monoculture, with predominantly synergistic effects, and the hierarchical drivers suggested: temperature strongly regulated the release of dissolved compounds and its non-additivity. In particular, freeze-thaw cycles and seasonal snow accelerated the synergistic effects on dissolved compound loss. Litter CWM and Rao traits only accelerated soluble C release and the synergistic effects of soluble P at the last stage of dissolved compound loss, respectively. Litter nutrients directly drove the release of soluble C and P at different stages. Litter C quality and microbes regulated the release of soluble C and P via direct effects, and stoichiometry had an indirect impact, which mainly before 40 % of initial mass loss. Yet, litter chemistry showed a minimal effect on soluble N release, so controls established for the release of soluble C and P might not be valid for soluble N during decomposition. Collectively, our findings advocate the decomposition environment and litter nutrients are key factors for controlling the dissolved compounds leaching, then followed by the interactions of litter C quality, stoichiometry, litter functional diversity, and microbe, which is important for understanding soil organic matter pool and soil fertility in alpine ecosystems.</p>

Abstract:Abstract Plant litter inputs can promote the decomposition of soil organic matter (OM) through the priming effect (PE). However, whereas leaf litter chemistry has long been identified as the primary driver of litter decomposition within biomes world‐wide, little is known about how litter chemical traits influence the occurrence and strength of the PE. Here, we studied the effects of 15 co‐occurring C 3 leaf litters of contrasting chemistry on C 4 soil respiration by analysing changes in 13 C natural abundance during early and later stages of litter decomposition (up to 125 days). Besides an apparent PE of 16% in the first 3 days, soil C respiration was increased by 24% on average with leaf litter addition in the initial stage of decomposition (4–26 days) and by 8% at later stages (27–125 days). Most interestingly, soil PE related well to initial litter chemistry and the dominant factors influencing the magnitude of the PE changed with decomposition stage. In the early stage of decomposition, litter leachate C content and litter hemicellulose concentration were positively correlated with the strength of the PE, whereas tannin concentration was negatively associated with soil PE. Together, tannin and hemicellulose explained half of the observed variation in the PE ( R 2 = 0.58). In the later phase of decomposition, lignin and lignin:N ratios were negatively related to the PE, whereas Ca, K and Mg concentrations were positively related to the PE; lignin alone gave the best prediction of the PE ( R 2 = 0.58) at later decomposition stages. Our findings provide evidence that the magnitude and direction of the PE is influenced by the chemistry of OM inputs and suggest that, as decomposition proceeds differently among litter of contrasting chemistry, litters can also have variable effect on soil PE through time. The predictive power of litter chemical traits on soil PE opens new perspectives for improving our mechanistic understanding of soil PE and improving our abilities to model soil C dynamics at variable scales. Abstract:<h3 class="Heading">Purpose</h3><p class="Para">Understanding ecosystem processes such as litter decomposition in response to dramatic land-use change is critical for modeling and predicting carbon (C) cycles. However, the patterns of litter decomposition along with long-term secondary succession (over 100 years) are not well reported, especially concerning nutrient limitations on litter decomposition.</p><h3 class="Heading">Materials and methods</h3><p class="Para">To clarify the response of litter decomposition to changes in soil nutrient availability, we conducted four incubation experiments involving soil and litter and nutrient addition from different successional stages and investigated the changes in microbial respiration and litter mass loss.</p><h3 class="Heading">Results and discussion</h3><p class="Para">Our results revealed that microbial respiration increased with succession without any litter addition (1.19~1.73 mg C g<sup>−1</sup> soil), and litter addition significantly promoted microbial respiration (16.5~72.9%), especially in the early successional stage (grassland and shrubland). The decomposition rate of the same litter decreased with succession. In addition, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) addition showed significant effects on litter decomposition and microbial respiration; P addition promoted litter decomposition (2.4~15.3%) and microbial respiration (10.1~34.5%) in all successional stages, while N addition promoted litter decomposition (4.0~10.3%) and microbial respiration (5.4~27.2%) in all except the last stage of succession, which showed a negative effect on litter decomposition (− 7.5%) and microbial respiration (− 6.1%), indicating possible N saturation of litter decomposition and microbial respiration.</p><h3 class="Heading">Conclusions</h3><p class="Para">This work highlights that soil nutrient availability and successional stages need to be taken into account to predict the changes to litter decomposition in response to global changes.</p>

Abstract:<p>1. At broad spatial scales, the factors regulating litter decomposition remain ambiguous, with the understanding of these factors largely based on studies investigating site‐specific single litter species, whereas studies using multi litter species mixtures across sites are rare.</p><p>2. We exposed in microcosms containing single species and all possible mixtures of four leaf litter species differing widely in initial chemical and physical characteristics from a temperate forest to the climatic conditions of four different forests across the northern hemisphere for one year.</p><p>3. Calcium, magnesium and condensed tannins predicted litter mass loss of single litter species and mixtures across forest types and biomes, regardless of species richness and microarthropod presence. However, relative mixture effects differed among forest types and varied with the access to the litter by microarthropods. Access to the microcosms by microarthropods modified the decomposition of individual litter species within mixtures, which differed among forest types independent of litter species richness and composition of litter mixtures. However, soil microarthropods generally only little affected litter decomposition.</p><p>4. <i>Synthesis </i>. We conclude that litter identity is the dominant driver of decomposition across different forest types and the non‐additive litter mixture effects vary among biomes despite identical leaf litter chemistry. These results suggest that across large spatial scales the environmental context of decomposing litter mixtures, including microarthropod communities, determine the decomposition of litter mixtures besides strong litter trait based effects.</p>

Abstract:Secondary plant metabolites (SPMEs) play an important role in plant survival in the environment and serve to establish ecological relationships between plants and other organisms. Communication between plants and microorganisms via SPMEs contained in root exudates or derived from litter decomposition is an example of this phenomenon. In this review, the general aspects of rhizodeposition together with the significance of terpenes and phenolic compounds are discussed in detail. We focus specifically on the effect of SPMEs on microbial community structure and metabolic activity in environments contaminated by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Furthermore, a section is devoted to a complex effect of plants and/or their metabolites contained in litter on bioremediation of contaminated sites. New insights are introduced from a study evaluating the effects of SPMEs derived during decomposition of grapefruit peel, lemon peel, and pears on bacterial communities and their ability to degrade PCBs in a long-term contaminated soil. The presented review supports the "secondary compound hypothesis" and demonstrates the potential of SPMEs for increasing the effectiveness of bioremediation processes.

Abstract:Understanding which factors affect the process of leaf litter decomposition is crucial if we are to predict changes in the functioning of stream ecosystems as a result of human activities. One major activity with known consequences on streams is agriculture, which is of particular concern in tropical regions, where forests are being rapidly replaced by crops. While pesticides are potential drivers of reduced decomposition rates observed in agricultural tropical streams, their specific effects on the performance of decomposers and detritivores are mostly unknown. We used a microcosm experiment to examine the individual and joint effects of an insecticide (chlorpyrifos) and a fungicide (chlorothalonil) on survival and growth of detritivores (Anchytarsus, Hyalella and Lepidostoma), aquatic hyphomycetes (AH) sporulation rate, taxon richness, assemblage structure, and leaf litter decomposition rates. Our results revealed detrimental effects on detritivore survival (which were mostly due to the insecticide and strongest for Hyalella), changes in AH assemblage structure, and reduced sporulation rate, taxon richness and microbial decomposition (mostly in response to the fungicide). Total decomposition was reduced especially when the pesticides were combined, suggesting that they operated differently and their effects were additive. Importantly, effects on decomposition were greater for single-species detritivore treatments than for the 3-species mixture, indicating that detritivore species loss may exacerbate the consequences of pesticides of stream ecosystem functioning.

Abstract:A feedback between decomposition and litter chemical composition occurs with decomposition altering composition that in turn influences the decomposition rate. Elucidating the temporal pattern of chemical composition is vital to understand this feedback, but the effects of plant species and climate on chemical changes remain poorly understood, especially over multiple years. In a 10-year decomposition experiment with litter of four species (Acer saccharum, Drypetes glauca, Pinus resinosa, and Thuja plicata) from four sites that range from the arctic to tropics, we determined the abundance of 11 litter chemical constituents that were grouped into waxes, carbohydrates, lignin/tannins, and proteins/peptides using advanced (13)C solid-state NMR techniques. Decomposition generally led to an enrichment of waxes and a depletion of carbohydrates, whereas the changes of other chemical constituents were inconsistent. Inconsistent convergence in chemical compositions during decomposition was observed among different litter species across a range of site conditions, whereas one litter species converged under different climate conditions. Our data clearly demonstrate that plant species rather than climate greatly alters the temporal pattern of litter chemical composition, suggesting the decomposition-chemistry feedback varies among different plant species.

Abstract:<p>1.Evolutionary history and adaptation to climate shape plant traits. Some include leaf traits that influence litter quality. Thus, evolutionary history should affect litter decomposition, a crucial ecosystem process. In addition, litter decomposition is directly influenced by climate. We consequently expect plant phylogeny, adaptation, and climate to jointly influence litter decomposition. These effects and their interactions have yet to be untangled at a global scale.</p><p>2.Here we present an analysis of variation in litter decomposition rates in rivers and streams across 285 published studies for 239 species (from ferns to angiosperms) distributed at 494 locations worldwide. We estimated the relative contributions of climatic conditions and phylogenetic heritage on litter decomposition rates, partitioning phylogenetic from climatic effects at the site and species levels using phylogenetic eigenvector analysis and phylogenetic linear mixed models. In addition, we modelled transitions in decomposition rates under a suite of multiple adaptive‐regime Ornstein‐Uhlenbeck models to test the hypothesis that natural selection has shaped clade‐level litter decomposition rates.</p><p>3.Leaf litter decomposition rate exhibited a significant phylogenetic signal. Modelling decomposition rate as a function of location, climatic niche, and phylogeny consistently recovered phylogeny alone as one of the top models in species‐level analyses. Since many previous studies have focused on the same species across many locations, we also conducted analyses at the species × site level. Both phylogenetic and climatic factors were favoured in models of this analysis, but the single most important predictor for angiosperms and for all taxa analysed together was phylogeny alone.</p><p>4.<i>Synthesis</i>. For plant species distributed globally at nearly 500 locations we found that plant phylogenetic history is a critically important predictor of litter decomposition rate in rivers and streams, explaining more of the variance in decomposition than site or climatic regime. Thus, our study demonstrates the influence of evolutionary history on suites of plant traits that shape a key ecosystem process.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Significance This study demonstrates that the protective effects of multifunctional maize secondary metabolites against a major pest are dependent on soil chemical composition. By functioning as both digestibility reducers and siderophores, benzoxazinoids link soil chemistry to plant–environment interactions. Given that many plant secondary metabolites have multiple functions in roots and leaves, such links are likely widespread and may govern community composition and pest dynamics across different (agro)ecosystems. The presented findings also illustrate the limits and context dependency of using multifunctional plant secondary metabolites to combat major herbivore pests. The latter is particularly important in the context of the threat that the fall armyworm poses for global maize production.

Abstract:With approximately 60 Pg of carbon (C) released as CO 2 annually, the decomposition of dead organic matter feeds the major terrestrial global CO 2 flux to the atmosphere. Macroclimate control over this critical C flux facilitates the parametrization of the C cycle in Earth system models and the understanding of climate change effects on the global C balance. Yet, the long-standing paradigm of climate control was recently challenged by the so far underestimated environmental heterogeneity at local scales, questioning the conceptual framework of thousands of decomposition studies and accuracy of current predictive models. Using three complementary decomposition experiments at a European scale, we showed that macroclimate and litter characteristics largely control plant litter decomposition, reaffirming the role of macroclimate as an integrative decomposition driver through direct environmental control and by influencing co-evolving local plant and decomposer communities. Neglecting this latter indirect effect, commonly used standard litter types overrated micro-environmental control and failed to predict local decomposition of plot-specific litter. Our data help clarify a key question on the regulation of the global C cycle by identifying the relative role of control factors over decomposition and the scales at which they matter and by highlighting sources of confusion in the literature.

Abstract:ABSTRACT What is the effect of phyllosphere microorganisms on litter decomposition in the absence of colonization by soil microorganisms? Here, we simulated the litter standing decomposition stage in the field to study the differences in the composition and structure of the phyllosphere microbial community after the mixed decomposition of Populus × canadensis and Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica litter. After 15 months of mixed decomposition, we discovered that litters that were not in contact with soil had an antagonistic effect (the actual decomposition rate was 18.18%, which is lower than the expected decomposition rate) and the difference between the litters themselves resulted in a negative response to litter decomposition. In addition, there was no significant difference in bacterial and fungal community diversity after litter decomposition. The litter bacterial community was negatively responsive to litter properties and positively responsive to the fungal community. Importantly, we found that bacterial communities had a greater impact on litter decomposition than fungi. This study has enriched our understanding of the decomposition of litter itself and provided a theoretical basis for further exploring the “additive and non-additive effects” of litter decomposition and the mechanism of microbial drive. IMPORTANCE The study of litter decomposition mechanism plays an important role in the material circulation of the global ecosystem. However, previous studies have often looked at contact with soil as the starting point for decomposition. But actually, standing litter is very common in forest ecosystems. Therefore, we used field simulation experiments to simulate the decomposition of litters without contact with soil for 15 months, to explore the combined and non-added benefits of the decomposition of mixed litters, and to study the influence of microbial community composition on the decomposition rate while comparing the differences of microbial communities.

Abstract:Abstract Background and aims: Endophytic microorganisms exist commonly in plants and are recognized to increase plant growth especially under adverse physical environmental conditions. We here demonstrate that endophytic bacteria (EB) Bacillus cereus can accelerate the decomposition of plant litter and enhance nutrient availability for plant growth.Methods: We first obtained plant litter with and without EB inoculation using a model plant Arabidopsis thaliana in a microcosmic experiment, then conducted a litter decomposition experiment to investigated the effect of EB on litter decay rate, phosphorus availability, and on soil microbial community structure. We further evaluated wheat ( Triticum aestivum ) biomass growth using soils treated with and without EB.Results: Inoculation of EB significantly increased the mass loss of Arabidopsis litter in the middle stage of decomposition, elevated the activity of alkaline phosphatase in the early stage of decomposition, and increased soil available P at the end of decomposition. Analyses of Illumina MiSeq sequencing and structural equation models also indicated that EB inoculation had pronounced impact on the bacterial abundance and diversity in soil. Finally, the growth of the wheat was significantly promoted in the litter with EB decomposition system. Conclusion: EB mediated host after-life effect likely through accelerating the release of nutrients such as P from decomposing plant litter and regulating the structure of soil microorganisms, promoting the sustainability of nutrient utilization efficiency in a terrestrial ecosystem.
