Abstract:Ammonia as a vital chemical is not only indispensable to agriculture but also crucial to some energy devices like fuel cells. However, conventional ammonia production remains energy-intensive and environmentally hostile, and thus electrochemical synthesis of ammonia under mild conditions receives increasing attention. Herein, we report nanoflower-like yttrium fluoride (YF3) as a high-efficiency electrocatalyst for the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) for the synthesis of ammonia. Such a catalyst exhibits an ammonia yield rate of 15.5 mu g h(-1) mg(cat)(-1) and a faradaic efficiency (FE) of 26.2% in 0.1 M Na2SO4, and also shows excellent selectivity and stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that electrons transfer from the N N bond to N-Y and N-H bonds, and the activation of N-2 molecules promotes the adsorption of H atoms.

Abstract:Nitrogen fixation is one of the most important issues but a long-standing challenge in chemistry. Here, we propose FeN3-embedded graphene as the catalyst for nitrogen fixation from first-principles calculations. Results show that in view of the chemical coordination, the FeN3 center is highly spin-polarized with a localized magnetic moment substantially to promote N-2 adsorption and activate its inert N-N triple bond. The synergy between the graphene and FeN3 equips the system with novel features for the catalytic conversion of the activated N-2 into NH3 via a six-proton and six-electron process, following three possible reaction pathways at room temperature. Our findings provide a rational paradigm for catalytic nitrogen fixation that would be conducive to ammonia production.

Abstract:Ammonia is vital to life and industrial manufacture. The traditional technology of ammonia synthesis, Haber-Bosch process, has been plagued for decades with problems of the harsh conditions required (typically 300oC–500oC and 200–300 atm). The mechanism studies of nitrogenase enzymes have recently motivated an alternative electrochemical technology to reduce N2 to NH3 using renewable resources under ambient conditions. Unfortunately, the NRR has seriously subjected to an ultralow Faradaic efficiency and yield rate due to the inert triple bond of N2 molecule and competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This talk will present our strategies focusing on the perspective of catalyst design to tackle challenges of electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), such as proposing a Li+ incorporation strategy to facilitate the N2 activation,[1] recommending a finding of the possibility of efficient NRR catalysts accompanied with vigorous HER,[2] disclosing the significance of sized and spatial effects of two-dimension materials (Ti3C2Tx MXene, black phosphorus) for NRR.[3] Moreover, considering electrochemical NRR as an immature field, rigorous control experiments to eliminate possible contaminations and standard ammonia detection methods to ensure data accuracy are proposed.[4] References [1] G. Development of novel methods for N 2 transformation is a worthwhile goal and researchers have turned their attention to electrochemical N 2 reduction as a potentially sustainable solution. The development of molecular electrocatalysts has gained considerable momentum over the last decades, and this review focuses on the advances and challenges in the field of molecular electrochemical nitrogen fixation and aims to inspire further research into the realm of nitrogen fixation chemistry from an electrochemical perspective.

Abstract:NH3 synthesis by the Haber-Bosch method is regarded as the dominant method in industry. Such a process is energy-intensive, accompanied by a large amount of CO2 emission. Electrocatalytic N2 reduction is a sustainable avenue for NH3 production at ambient conditions. However, it needs a catalyst to boost the N2 reduction reaction. Here, we demonstrate that DyF3 is an efficient electrocatalyst. In 0.1 m Na2 SO4 , DyF3 attains a large NH3 yield of 10.9 μg h-1 mg-1 cat. at -0.45 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode, with the corresponding Faradaic efficiency of 8.8 %. Furthermore, this catalyst exhibits high electrochemical stability.

Abstract:Despite modern chemistry's success in providing affordable fertilizers for feeding the population and supporting the ammonia industry, ineffective nitrogen management has led to pollution of water resources and air, contributing to climate change. Here, we report a multifunctional copper single-atom electrocatalyst-based aerogel (Cu SAA) that integrates the multiscale structure of coordinated single-atomic sites and 3D channel frameworks. The Cu SAA demonstrates an impressive faradaic efficiency of 87% for NH 3 synthesis, as well as remarkable sensing performance with detection limits of 0.15 ppm for NO 3 − and 1.19 ppm for NH 4 + . These multifunctional features enable precise control and conversion of nitrate to ammonia in the catalytic process, facilitating accurate regulation of the ammonium and nitrate ratios in fertilizers. We thus designed the Cu SAA into a smart and sustainable fertilizing system (SSFS), a prototype device for on-site automatic recycling of nutrients with precisely controlled nitrate/ammonium concentrations. The SSFS represents a forward step toward sustainable nutrient/waste recycling, thus permitting efficient nitrogen utilization of crops and mitigating pollutant emissions. This contribution exemplifies how electrocatalysis and nanotechnology can be potentially leveraged to enable sustainable agriculture.

Abstract:Ammonia, key precursor for fertilizer production, convenient hydrogen carrier and emerging clean fuel, plays a pivotal role in sustaining life on earth. Currently, the main route for NH3 synthesis is via the heterogeneous catalytic Haber-Bosch process (N2+3H2 - 2NH3), which proceeds under extreme conditions of temperature and pressure with a very large carbon footprint. Herein we report that a pristine nitrogen-doped nanoporous graphitic carbon membrane (NCM) can electrochemically convert N2 into NH3 in an aqueous acidic solution under ambient conditions. The Faradaic efficiency and rate of production of NH3 on the NCM electrode reach 5.2% and 0.08 g m-2 h-1, respectively. After functionalization of the NCM with Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) these performance metrics are dramatically enhanced to 22% and 0.36 g m-2 h-1, respectively. These efficiencies and rates for the production of NH3 at room temperature and atmospheric pressure are unprecedented. As this system offers the potential to be scaled to industrial proportions there is a high likelihood it might displace the century old Haber-Bosch process.

Chen et al. report an amorphous noble-metal-free hybrid catalyst with high NH3 yield and Faradaic efficiency. Such a hybrid catalyst enables effective N2 adsorption and charge transfer for the NRR process.

Abstract:Electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) under ambient conditions is an attractive approach to synthesizing NH3, but remains a significant challenge due to insufficient NH3 yields and low Faraday efficiency (FE). Among studied NRR catalyst formulations, molecular catalysts with well-defined FeN4 configuration structures allow the establishment of a precise structural model for elucidating the complex multiple proton and electron transfer NRR processes competing with the undesirable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Inspired by biological nitrogenase, Fe sites can activate the N2 due to their strong interactions with N2. The unoccupied d orbital of Fe endows it the ideal electron acceptor and donor, which offers an attractive chemical property to facilitate NRR activity. Herein, we explore a molecular iron catalyst, i.e., tetraphenylporphyrin iron chloride (FeTPPCl) for the NRR. It exhibits promising NRR activity with the highest NH3 yield (18.28 ± 1.6 μg h−1 mg−1cat.) and FE (16.76 ± 0.9 %) at −0.3 V vs. RHE in neutral electrolytes. Importantly, 15N isotope labeling experiments confirm that the synthesized NH3 originates from the direct reduction of N2 in which 1H NMR spectroscopy and colorimetric methods were performed to quantify NH3 production. Also, operando electrochemical Raman spectroscopy studies confirm that the Fe–Cl bond breakage in the FeTPPCl catalyst is a prerequisite for initiating the NRR. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further reveal that the active species is Fe porphyrin complex [Fe(TPP)]2− and the rate-determining step is the first hydrogenation of N2 via the alternating mechanism on the [Fe0]2− sites. This work provides a new concept to use structurally defined molecular single iron catalysts to elucidate NRR mechanisms and design optimal active sites with enhanced reaction activity and selectivity for NH3 production under ambient conditions.

Abstract:Under the current double challenge of energy and the environment, an effective nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) has become a very urgent need. However, the largest production of ammonia gas today is carried out by the Haber–Bosch process, which has many disadvantages, among which energy consumption and air pollution are typical. As the best alternative procedure, electrochemistry has received extensive attention. In this paper, a catalyst loaded with Fe3 clusters on the two-dimensional material C2N (Fe3@C2N) is proposed to achieve effective electrochemical NRR, and our first-principles calculations reveal that the stable Fe3@C2N exhibits excellent catalytic performance for electrochemical nitrogen fixation with a limiting potential of 0.57 eV, while also suppressing the major competing hydrogen evolution reaction. Our findings will open a new door for the development of non-precious single-cluster catalysts for effective nitrogen reduction reactions.

Abstract:NH3 is one of the largest-volume industrial chemicals synthesized in the world. It not only is a kind of important chemical base materials to produce fertilizers, plastics and explosives, but also can serve as a clean energy carrier with high hydrogen content for a sustainable energy supply. N-2 is the most abundant gas in atmosphere, but its inert character caused by the strong triple bond, impedes itself from being converted to NH3. In nature, this shortcoming is overcome by biological N-2 fixation utilizing nitrogenase enzymes. Industrially, fixation of N-2-to-NH3 prevailingly depends on Haber-Bosch process using Ru- or Fe-based catalysts, but this process consumes large energy and emits heavy carbon which increases crisis of global warming.

Abstract:Preparing photocatalytic nitrogen-fixing catalysts that can effectively produce ammonia under mild conditions is an urgent problem to be solved. Herein, we for the first time present two three-dimensional tetrathiafulvalene-based covalent organic frameworks with high crystallinity and permanent pores, termed 3D-TTF-COFs, specifically designed for photocatalytic nitrogen fixation. The incorporation of TTF-based building blocks not only enhances light absorption capabilities but also facilitates the rapid transfer of photoexcited electrons, ensuring efficient charge carrier separation. It is worth noting that the resultant COFs exhibit remarkable NH 3 generation rates of 313.8 ± 5.6 and 106.8 ± 4.2 μmol g −1 h −1 under visible light irradiation, surpassing the performance of most photocatalyst materials reported so far. Furthermore, these COFs maintain structural integrity and excellent performance during cyclic testing. Additionally, we carried out density functional theory calculations to elucidate the reaction mechanism between N 2 and NH 3 . This work provides a feasible strategy for constructing 3D COFs to achieve efficient photocatalytic nitrogen fixation.

Abstract:Solar-driven reduction of nitrogen to ammonia is a promising strategy for energy storage and conversion. Herein, a new strategy of modifying Fe(III) onto carbon nitride is reported showing enhanced photocatalytic nitrogen fixation. The Fe(III) and nitrogen vacancies narrow down the carbon nitride intrinsic bandgap and suppress the radiative electron-hole recombination. Fe(III)-C3N4 therefore shows potential as a new high-efficiency artificial photosynthesis ammonia.

Abstract:Nitrogen (N2) is an important component of atmosphere, so human, animal or plant cannot used or absorbed it directly, and then it is necessary of converting N2 to nitrogen-containing compounds that can be used in human food and other industrial production. Therefore, the fixation and conversion of nitrogen has gradually become a new research hotspot. Ammonia is a very important inorganic chemical product, which plays an important role in agriculture, medicine, energy storage and other industries, and the demand is increasing with the development of society and the increasing population. The existing nitrogen-fixed ammonia synthesis method and its mechanism are briefly introduced. Then the research status of nitrogen electrochemical synthesis ammonia catalyst is reviewed. Finally, the future development trend of nitrogen electrochemical synthesis ammonia catalyst is prospected.

Abstract:AbstractPresent one‐step N2 fixation is impeded by tough activation of the N≡N bond and low selectivity to NH3. Here we report fixation of N2‐to‐NH3 can be decoupled to a two‐step process with one problem effectively solved in each step, including: 1) facile activation of N2 to NOx− by a non‐thermal plasma technique, and 2) highly selective conversion of NOx− to NH3 by electrocatalytic reduction. Importantly, this process uses air and water as low‐cost raw materials for scalable ammonia production under ambient conditions. For NOx− reduction to NH3, we present a surface boron‐rich core–shell nickel boride electrocatalyst. The surface boron‐rich feature is the key to boosting activity, selectivity, and stability via enhanced NOx− adsorption, and suppression of hydrogen evolution and surface Ni oxidation. A significant ammonia production of 198.3 μmol cm−2 h−1 was achieved, together with nearly 100 % Faradaic efficiency.
