Abstract:In this correspondence, an equivalent definition of algebraic immunity of Boolean functions is posed, which can clear up the confusion caused by the proof of optimal algebraic immunity of the Carlet-Feng function and some other functions constructed by virtue of Carlet and Feng's idea.

Abstract:Several factors (e.g., balancedness, good correlation immunity) are considered as important properties of Boolean functions for using in cryptographic primitives. A Boolean function is perfect algebraic immune if it is with perfect immunity against algebraic and fast algebraic attacks. There is an increasing interest in construction of Boolean function that is perfect algebraic immune combined with other characteristics, like resiliency. A resilient function is a balanced correlation-immune function. This paper uses bivariate representation of Boolean function and theory of finite field to construct a generalized and new class of Boolean functions on even variables by extending the Carlet-Feng functions. We show that the functions generated by this construction support cryptographic properties of 1-resiliency and (sub)optimal algebraic immunity and further propose the sufficient condition of achieving optimal algebraic immunity. Compared experimentally with Carlet-Feng functions and the functions constructed by the method of first-order concatenation existing in the literature on even (from 6 to 16) variables, these functions have better immunity against fast algebraic attacks. Implementation results also show that they are almost perfect algebraic immune functions.

Abstract:A method to construct Boolean functions with maximum algebraic immunity have been proposed in [1]. Based on that method, we propose a different method to construct Boolean functions on even variables with maximum algebraic immunity in this letter. By counting on our construction, a lower bound of the number of such Boolean functions is derived, which is the best among all the existing lower bounds.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the cryptographic properties of an infinite class of balanced vectorial Boolean functions recently introduced by Feng, Liao and Yang. These functions provably achieve an optimum algebraic immunity. We give a simpler proof of this fact and we prove that these functions have also an optimum algebraic degree and a non-weak nonlinearity.

Abstract:Algebraic immunity has been proposed as an important property of Boolean functions. To resist algebraic attack, a Boolean function should possess high algebraic immunity. It is well known now that the algebraic immunity of an $n$-variable Boolean function is upper bounded by $\left\lceil {\frac{n}{2}} \right\rceil $. In this paper, for an odd integer $n$, we present a construction method which can efficiently generate a Boolean function of $n$ variables with maximum algebraic immunity, and we also show that any such function can be generated by this method. Moreover, the number of such Boolean functions is greater than $2^{2^{n-1}}$.

Abstract:The notion of algebraic immunity of Boolean functions has been generalized in several ways to vector-valued functions and/or over arbitrary finite fields and reasonable upper bounds for such generalized algebraic immunities has been proved in Armknecht and Krause (Proceedings of ICALP 2006, LNCS, vol. 4052, pp 180–191, 2006), Ars and Faugere (Algebraic immunity of functions over finite fields, INRIA, No report 5532, 2005) and Batten (Canteaut, Viswanathan (eds.) Progress in Cryptology—INDOCRYPT 2004, LNCS, vol. 3348, pp 84–91, 2004). In this paper we show that the upper bounds can be reached as the maximal values of algebraic immunities for most of generalizations by using properties of Reed–Muller codes.

Abstract:After the improvement by Courtois and Meier of the algebraic attacks on stream ciphers and the introduction of the related notion of algebraic immunity, several constructions of infinite classes of Boolean functions with optimum algebraic immunity have been proposed. All of them gave functions whose algebraic degrees are high enough for resisting the Berlekamp-Massey attack and the recent Rønjom-Helleseth attack, but whose nonlinearities either achieve the worst possible value (given by Lobanov's bound) or are slightly superior to it. Hence, these functions do not allow resistance to fast correlation attacks. Moreover, they do not behave well with respect to fast algebraic attacks. In this paper, we study an infinite class of functions which achieve an optimum algebraic immunity. We prove that they have an optimum algebraic degree and a much better nonlinearity than all the previously obtained infinite classes of functions. We check that, at least for small values of the number of variables, the functions of this class have in fact a very good nonlinearity and also a good behavior against fast algebraic attacks.

Abstract:The computation on algebraic immunity (AI) of symmetric boolean functions includes: determining the AI of a given symmetric function and searching all symmetric functions with AI = d or AI >= d, where d <= [2/n]. In this paper we firstly showed a necessary and sufficient condition of AI of symmetric boolean functions and then proposed several efficient algorithms on computation of algebraic immunity of symmetric boolean functions. By these algorithms we could assess the vulnerability of symmetric boolean functions against algebraic/fast algebraic attacks efficiently, and find all symmetric functions having a given algebraic immunity AI(n)(f) = d, for some 0 <= d <= n.

Abstract:In this paper, we put forward an efficient method to study the symmetric Boolean functions with high algebraic immunity on even number of variables. We obtain some powerful necessary conditions for symmetric Boolean functions to achieve high algebraic immunity by studying the weight support of some specific types of Boolean functions of low degrees. With these results, we prove that the algebraic immunity of a large class of symmetric correlation immune Boolean functions, namely the symmetric palindromic functions, is not high. Besides, we construct all symmetric Boolean functions with maximum algebraic immunity and give a description for those with submaximum algebraic immunity. We also determine the Hamming weight, degrees and nonlinearity of the symmetric Boolean functions with maximum algebraic immunity.

Abstract:To resist algebraic attack, a Boolean function should possess good algebraic immunity (AI). Several papers constructed symmetric functions with the maximum algebraic immunity $\lceil \frac{n}{2}\rceil $. In this correspondence we prove that for each odd $n$, there is exactly one trivial balanced $n$-variable symmetric Boolean function achieving the algebraic immunity $\lceil \frac{n}{2}\rceil $. And we also obtain a necessary condition for the algebraic normal form of a symmetric Boolean function with maximum algebraic immunity.

Abstract:Constructing $2m$-variable Boolean functions with optimal algebraic immunity based on decomposition of additive group of the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{2^{2m}}$ seems to be a promising approach since Tu and Deng's work. In this paper, we consider the same problem in a new way. Based on polar decomposition of the multiplicative group of $\mathbb{F}_{2^{2m}}$, we propose a new construction of Boolean functions with optimal algebraic immunity. By a slight modification of it, we obtain a class of balanced Boolean functions achieving optimal algebraic immunity, which also have optimal algebraic degree and high nonlinearity. Computer investigations imply that this class of functions also behave well against fast algebraic attacks.

Abstract:It is well known that Boolean functions used in stream and block ciphers should have high algebraic immunity to resist algebraic attacks. Up to now, there have been many constructions of Boolean functions achieving the maximum algebraic immunity. In this paper, we present several constructions of rotation symmetric Boolean functions with maximum algebraic immunity on an odd number of variables which are not symmetric, via a study of invertible cyclic matrices over the binary field. In particular, we generalize the existing results and introduce a new method to construct all the rotation symmetric Boolean functions that differ from the majority function on two orbits. Moreover, we prove that their nonlinearities are upper bounded by 2(n-1) - ((n-1)(left perpendicularn/2right perpendicular)) + 2(n - 6).

Abstract:Nowadays, the resistance against algebraic attacks and fast algebraic attacks are considered as an important cryptographic property for Boolean functions used in stream ciphers. Both attacks are very powerful analysis concepts and can be applied to symmetric cryptographic algorithms used in stream ciphers. The notion of algebraic immunity has received wide attention since it is a powerful tool to measure the resistance of a Boolean function to standard algebraic attacks. Nevertheless, an algebraic tool to handle the resistance to fast algebraic attacks is not clearly identified in the literature. In the current paper, we propose a new parameter to measure a Boolean function's resistance to fast algebraic attack. We also introduce the notion of fast immunity profile and show that it informs both on the resistance to standard and fast algebraic attacks. Further, we evaluate our parameter for two secondary constructions of Boolean functions. Moreover, A coding-theory approach to the characterization of perfect algebraic immune functions is presented. Via this characterization, infinite families of binary linear complementary dual codes (or LCD codes for short) are obtained from perfect algebraic immune functions. Some of the binary LCD codes presented in this paper are optimal. These binary LCD codes have applications in armoring implementations against so-called side-channel attacks (SCA) and fault non-invasive attacks, in addition to their applications in communication and data storage systems.

Abstract:It is known that Boolean functions used in stream and block ciphers should have good cryptographic properties to resist algebraic attacks. Up until now, there have been several constructions of Boolean functions achieving optimum algebraic immunity. However, most of their nonlinearities are very low. Carlet and Feng studied a class of Boolean functions with optimum algebraic immunity and deduced the lower bound of its nonlinearity, which is good, but not very high. Moreover, the main practical problem with this construction is that it cannot be implemented efficiently. In this paper, we put forward a new method to construct cryptographically significant Boolean functions by using primitive polynomials, and construct three infinite classes of Boolean functions with good cryptographic properties: balancedness, optimum algebraic degree, optimum algebraic immunity, and a high nonlinearity.

Abstract:Boolean functions with high algebraic immunity are important cryptographic primitives in some stream ciphers. In this paper, two methodologies for constructing minimal binary codes from sets, Boolean functions and vectorial Boolean functions with high algebraic immunity, are proposed. More precisely, a general construction of new minimal codes using minimal codes contained in Reed-Muller codes and sets without nonzero low degree annihilators is presented. The other construction allows us to yield minimal codes from certain subcodes of Reed-Muller codes and vectorial Boolean functions with high algebraic immunity. Via these general constructions, infinite families of minimal binary linear codes of dimension m and length less than or equal to m(m + 1)/2 are obtained. Besides, a lower bound on the minimum distance of the proposed minimal linear codes is established. Conjectures and open problems are also presented. The results of this paper show that Boolean functions with high algebraic immunity have nice applications in several fields additionally to symmetric cryptography, such as coding theory and secret sharing schemes.

Abstract: In this paper, we explicitly construct a large class of symmetric Boolean functions on $2k$ variables with algebraic immunity not less than $d$, where integer $k$ is given arbitrarily and $d$ is a given suffix of $k$ in binary representation. If let $d = k$, our constructed functions achieve the maximum algebraic immunity. Remarkably, $2^{\lfloor \log_2{k} \rfloor + 2}$ symmetric Boolean functions on $2k$ variables with maximum algebraic immunity are constructed, which is much more than the previous constructions. Based on our construction, a lower bound of symmetric Boolean functions with algebraic immunity not less than $d$ is derived, which is $2^{\lfloor \log_2{d} \rfloor + 2(k-d+1)}$. As far as we know, this is the first lower bound of this kind.
