Abstract:Although a redox mediator (RM) strategy can lower the overpotential of Li–O2 batteries (LOBs), the redox shuttling results in an undesired RM consumption and a continued decomposition of lithium metal anode, leading to a poor cycling stability. In this work, a hybrid inorganic–organic composite separator based on polyethylene oxide/TiO2/polypropylene (PEO/TiO2/PE) in LOBs has been reported for the first time, which aims to suppress the RM shuttling. The influences of TiO2 nanoparticles and PEO on battery performance are systematically investigated. Benefiting from the synergistic advantages, a LOB with PEO/TiO2/PE separator displays stable cyclability, considerable rate performance, and good reversibility. Additionally, the mechanism of inhibiting shuttling effect by this composite separator is proposed. We hope that this work can give an insight into the development of multiple functional separators for Li anode protection in LOBs.The Supporting Information is available free of charge at <a class="ext-link" href="/doi/10.1021/acsaem.0c01894?goto=supporting-info">https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsaem.0c01894</a>.Image for a cell with a modified 2025 coin-type design; LSV curve of the as-prepared PEO/TiO2/PE separator; related calibration curve toward the amount of Li2O2 obtained <i>via</i> a TiOSO4-based Li2O2 titration method by UV–vis spectrometry; EDS elemental mapping of the as-prepared PEO/TiO2/PE separator; CV curves for two- and three-electrode systems using different separators; cycling performances of Li|Li symmetric cells and Li–O2 cells with different separators; variations of round-trip efficiency for cells with different separators; equivalent circuit corresponding to a LOB; stability tests for the Li anode, as-prepared separator, and O2 cathode after the cell death by SEM, XRD, and Raman techniques (<a class="ext-link" href="/doi/suppl/10.1021/acsaem.0c01894/suppl_file/ae0c01894_si_001.pdf">PDF</a>)This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
