Abstract:This article provides the basic algebraic background on infinitesimal deformations and presents the proof of the well-known fact that the non-trivial infinitesimal deformations of a K-algebra R are parameterized by the elements of cotangent module T1(R)$$T^1(R)$$ of R. In this article we focus on deformations of toric rings, and give an explicit description of T1(R)$$T^1(R)$$ in the case that R is a toric ring. In particular, we are interested in unobstructed deformations which preserve the toric structure. Such deformations we call separations. Toric rings which do not admit any separation are called inseparable. We apply the theory to the edge ring of a finite graph. The coordinate ring of a convex polyomino may be viewed as the edge ring of a special class of bipartite graphs. It is shown that the coordinate ring of any convex polyomino is inseparable. We introduce the concept of semi-rigidity, and give a combinatorial description of the graphs whose edge ring is semi-rigid. The results are applied to show that for m-k=k=3$$m-k=k=3$$, Gk,m-k$$G_{k,m-k}$$ is not rigid while for m-k≥k≥4$$m-k\ge k\ge 4$$, Gk,m-k$$G_{k,m-k}$$ is rigid. Here Gk,m-k$$G_{k,m-k}$$ is the complete bipartite graph Km-k,k$$K_{m-k,k}$$ with one edge removed.
The toric ring of one dimensional simplicial complexes

Abstract:Let $\Delta$ be a 1-dimensional simplicial complex. Then $\Delta$ may be identified with a finite simple graph $G$. In this article, we investigate the toric ring $R_G$ of $G$. All graphs $G$ such that $R_G$ is a normal domain are classified. For such a graph, we determine the set $\mathcal{P}_G$ of height one monomial prime ideals of $R_G$. In the bipartite case, and in the case of whiskered cycles, this set is explicitly described. As a consequence, we determine the canonical class $[\omega_{R_G}]$ and characterize the Gorenstein property of $R_G$. For a bipartite graph $G$, we show that $R_G$ is Gorenstein if and only if $G$ is unmixed. For a subclass of non-bipartite graphs $G$, which includes whiskered cycles, $R_G$ is Gorenstein if and only if $G$ is unmixed and has an odd number of vertices. Finally, it is proved that $R_G$ is a pseudo-Gorenstein ring if $G$ is an odd cycle.

Abstract:We extend the sortability concept to monomial ideals which are not necessarily generated in one degree and as an application we obtain normal Cohen-Macaulay toric rings attached to vertex cover ideals of graphs. Moreover, we consider a construction on a graph called a clique multi-whiskering which always produces vertex cover ideals with componentwise linear powers.

Abstract:We consider standard graded toric rings $R_{\Delta}$ whose generators correspond to the faces of a simplicial complex $\Delta$. When $R_{\Delta}$ is normal, it is shown that its divisor class group is free. For a flag complex $\Delta$ which is the clique complex of a perfect graph, a nice description for the class group and the canonical module of $R_{\Delta}$ in terms of the minimal vertex covers of the graph is given. Moreover, for a quasi-forest simplicial complex a quadratic Gröbner basis for the defining ideal of $R_{\Delta}$ is presented. Using this fact we give combinatorial descriptions for the $a$-invariant and the Gorenstein property of $R_\Delta$.

Abstract:Athanasiadis [Ehrhart polynomials, simplicial polytopes, magic squares and a conjecture of Stanley, J. Reine Angew. Math., to appear.] studies an effective technique to show that Gorenstein sequences coming from compressed polytopes are unimodal. In the present paper we will use such the technique to find a rich class of Gorenstein toric rings with unimodal h-vectors arising from finite graphs.

Abstract:We construct a presentation for the Cox ring of the projectivization $\mathbb{P}\mathcal{E}$ of any rank $n$ irreducible toric vector bundle on $\mathbb{P}^n$. We use this presentation to show that $\mathbb{P}\mathcal{E}$ always satisfies Fujita's freeness and ampleness conjectures.

As an application we analyze the Fano property and establish Fujita's freeness and ampleness conjectures for several classes of projectivized toric vector bundles.

Abstract:Following a construction of Stanley we consider toric face rings associated to rational pointed fans. This class of rings is a common generalization of the concepts of Stanley--Reisner and affine monoid algebras. The main goal of this article is to unify parts of the theories of Stanley--Reisner- and affine monoid algebras. We consider (non-pure) shellable fan's and the Cohen--Macaulay property. Moreover, we study the local cohomology, the canonical module and the Gorenstein property of a toric face ring.

Abstract:Building on the recent computation of the cohomology rings of smooth toric varieties and partial quotients of moment-angle complexes, we investigate the naturality properties of the resulting isomorphism between the cohomology of such a space and the torsion product involving the Stanley-Reisner ring. If 2 is invertible in the chosen coefficient ring, then the isomorphism is natural with respect to toric morphisms, which for partial quotients are defined in analogy with toric varieties. In general there are deformation terms that we describe explicitly.

Abstract:Perfect graphs form one of the distinguished classes of finite simple graphs. In 2006, Chudnovsky, Robertson, Seymour and Thomas proved that a graph is perfect if and only if it has no odd holes and no odd antiholes as induced subgraphs, which was conjectured by Berge. We consider the class ${\mathcal A}$ of graphs that have no odd holes, no antiholes and no odd stretchers as induced subgraphs. In particular, every graph belonging to ${\mathcal A}$ is perfect. Everett and Reed conjectured that a graph belongs to ${\mathcal A}$ if and only if it is perfectly contractile. In the present paper, we discuss graphs belonging to ${\mathcal A}$ from a viewpoint of commutative algebra. In fact, we conjecture that a perfect graph $G$ belongs to ${\mathcal A}$ if and only if the toric ideal of the stable set polytope of $G$ is generated by quadratic binomials. Especially, we show that this conjecture is true for Meyniel graphs, perfectly orderable graphs, and clique separable graphs, which are perfectly contractile graphs.

Abstract:A toric ideal is called robust if its universal Gröbner basis is a minimal set of generators, and is called generalized robust if its universal Gröbner basis equals its universal Markov basis (the union of all its minimal sets of binomial generators). Robust and generalized robust toric ideals are both interesting from both a Commutative Algebra and an Algebraic Statistics perspective. However, only a few nontrivial examples of such ideals are known. In this work we study these properties for toric ideals of both graphs and numerical semigroups. For toric ideals of graphs, we characterize combinatorially the graphs giving rise to robust and to generalized robust toric ideals generated by quadratic binomials. As a byproduct, we obtain families of Koszul rings. For toric ideals of numerical semigroups, we determine that one of its initial ideals is a complete intersection if and only if the semigroup belongs to the so-called family of free numerical semigroups. Hence, we characterize all complete intersection numerical semigroups which are minimally generated by one of its Gröbner basis and, as a consequence, all the Betti numbers of the toric ideal and its corresponding initial ideal coincide. Moreover, also for numerical semigroups, we prove that the ideal is generalized robust if and only if the semigroup has a unique Betti element and that there are only trivial examples of robust ideals. We finish the paper with some open questions.

Abstract:Our main goal is to determine, under certain restrictions, the maximal closed connected subgroups of simple algebraic groups containing a regular torus. We call a torus regular if its centralizer is abelian. We also obtain some results of independent interest. In particular, we determine the irreducible representations of simple algebraic groups whose non-zero weights occur with multiplicity 1.

Abstract:Let $B\subset \mathbb{P}^3$ be an slc quartic surface. The existence of an embedding $\mathbb{G}_m^3\hookrightarrow \mathbb{P}^3\setminus B$ implies that $B$ has coregularity zero. In this article, we initiate the classification of coregularity zero slc quartic surfaces $B\subset \mathbb{P}^3$ for which $\mathbb{P}^3\setminus B$ contains an algebraic torus $\mathbb{G}_m^3$. Equivalently, the classification of cluster type pairs $(\mathbb{P}^3,B)$. Along the way, we give criteria for a log Calabi--Yau pair $(X,B)$ over a toric variety $T$ to be of cluster type.

Abstract:Q-Gorenstein toric contact manifolds provide an interesting class of examples of contact manifolds with torsion first Chern class. They are completely determined by certain rational convex polytopes, called toric diagrams, and arise both as links of toric isolated singularities and as prequantizations of monotone toric symplectic orbifolds. In this paper we show how the cylindrical contact homology invariants of a Q-Gorenstein toric contact manifold are related to (i) the Ehrhart (quasi-)polynomial of its toric diagram; (ii) the Chen-Ruan cohomology of any crepant toric orbifold resolution of its corresponding toric isolated singularity; (iii) the Chen-Ruan cohomology of any monotone toric symplectic orbifold base that gives rise to it through prequantization.

Abstract:The celebrated BKK Theorem expresses the number of roots of a system of generic Laurent polynomials in terms of the mixed volume of the corresponding system of Newton polytopes. In Pukhlikov and Khovanskiĭ (Algebra i Analiz 4(4):188-216, 1992), Pukhlikov and the second author noticed that the cohomology ring of smooth projective toric varieties over C can be computed via the BKK Theorem. This complemented the known descriptions of the cohomology ring of toric varieties, like the one in terms of Stanley-Reisner algebras. In Sankaran and Uma (Comment Math Helv 78(3):540-554, 2003), Sankaran and Uma generalized the "Stanley-Reisner description" to the case of toric bundles, i.e., equivariant compactifications of (not necessarily algebraic) torus principal bundles. We provide a description of the cohomology ring of toric bundles which is based on a generalization of the BKK Theorem, and thus extends the approach by Pukhlikov and the second author. Indeed, for every cohomology class of the base of the toric bundle, we obtain a BKK-type theorem. Furthermore, our proof relies on a description of graded-commutative algebras which satisfy Poincaré duality. From this computation of the cohomology ring of toric bundles, we obtain a description of the ring of conditions of horospherical homogeneous spaces as well as a version of Brion-Kazarnovskii theorem for them. We conclude the manuscript with a number of examples. In particular, we apply our results to toric bundles over a full flag variety G/B. The description that we get generalizes the corresponding description of the cohomology ring of toric varieties as well as the one of full flag varieties G/B previously obtained by Kaveh (J Lie Theory 21(2):263-283, 2011).

Abstract:For a graph $G$, a graph cubeahedron $\square_G$ and a graph associahedron $\triangle_G$ are simple convex polytopes which admit (real) toric manifolds. In this paper, we introduce a graph invariant, called the $b$-number, and we show that the $b$-numbers compute the Betti numbers of the real toric manifold $X^\mathbb{R}(\square_G)$ corresponding to a graph cubeahedron. The $b$-number is a counterpart of the notion of $a$-number, introduced by S. Choi and the second named author, which computes the Betti numbers of the real toric manifold $X^\mathbb{R}(\triangle_G)$ corresponding to a graph associahedron. We also study various relationships between $a$-numbers and $b$-numbers from a toric topological view. Interestingly, for a forest $G$ and its line graph $L(G)$, the real toric manifolds $X^\mathbb{R}(\triangle_G)$ and $X^\mathbb{R}(\square_{L(G)})$ have the same Betti numbers.
