Abstract:The need to protect existing resources, stringent nutrient discharge norms and the dwindling natural resources of phosphorus have made it imperative to investigate methods by which nitrogen and phosphorus could be recovered from waste streams. Precipitation of struvite (MAP-magnesium ammonium phosphate) is an excellent alternative to provide N & P fertilizing nutrients having the twin advantages of low leaching sustained discharge of N and P to the soil environment. It could be a significant phosphorus source in the future after the consumption of every rock phosphate. Various processes have been investigated as potential struvite recovery configurations like fluidized bed reactors, draft tube reactors, batch/continuous stirred tank reactors, and air sparger reactors. Electrochemical recovery of nitrogen and phosphorus as struvite from wastewater is an advanced technology in which magnesium is used as a sacrificial anode, thereby avoiding other chemicals. The present review covers the studies on the different techniques and processes involved in the electrochemical recovery of nutrients from the waste stream by struvite precipitation. Almost all related aspects of struvite production sources, chemistry, and technology using electrochemical methods and their detailed characterization were discussed in a systematized manner to assist in the plan and design of the associated struvite production strategy.
