Abstract:We study automatic sequences and automatic systems generated by general constant length (nonprimitive) substitutions. While an automatic system is typically uncountable, the set of automatic sequences is countable, implying that most sequences within an automatic system are not themselves automatic. We provide a complete and succinct classification of automatic sequences that lie in a given automatic system in terms of the quasi-fixed points of the substitution defining the system. Our result extends to factor maps between automatic systems and highlights arithmetic properties underpinning these systems. We conjecture that a similar statement holds for general nonconstant length substitutions.

Abstract:We study the problem of completely automatically verifying uninterpreted programs—programs that work over arbitrary data models that provide an interpretation for the constants, functions and relations the program uses. The verification problem asks whether a given program satisfies a postcondition written using quantifier-free formulas with equality on the final state, with no loop invariants, contracts, etc. being provided. We show that this problem is undecidable in general. The main contribution of this paper is a subclass of programs, called coherent programs that admits decidable verification, and can be decided in Pspace. We then extend this class of programs to classes of programs that are k -coherent, where k ∈ N, obtained by (automatically) adding k ghost variables and assignments that make them coherent. We also extend the decidability result to programs with recursive function calls and prove several undecidability results that show why our restrictions to obtain decidability seem necessary.
On Shuffling and Splitting Automata

Abstract:We consider a class of finite state three-tape transducers which models the operation of shuffling and splitting words. We present them as automata over the so-called Shuffling Monoid. These automata can be seen as either shufflers or splitters interchangeably. We prove that functionality is decidable for splitters, and we also show that the equivalence between functional splitters is decidable. Moreover, in the deterministic case, the algorithm for equivalence is polynomial on the number of states of the splitter.

Decidability of the isomorphism problem between multidimensional substitutive subshifts

Abstract:An important question in dynamical systems is the classification problem, i.e., the ability to distinguish between two isomorphic systems. In this work, we study the topological factors between a family of multidimensional substitutive subshifts generated by morphisms with uniform support. We prove that it is decidable to check whether two minimal aperiodic substitutive subshifts are isomorphic. The strategy followed in this work consists of giving a complete description of the factor maps between these subshifts. Then, we deduce some interesting consequences on coalescence, automorphism groups, and the number of aperiodic symbolic factors of substitutive subshifts. We also prove other combinatorial results on these substitutions, such as the decidability of defining a subshift, the computability of the constant of recognizability, and the conjugacy between substitutions with different supports.

Reversible Transducers over Infinite Words

Abstract:Deterministic two-way transducers capture the class of regular functions. The efficiency of composing two-way transducers has a direct implication in algorithmic problems related to reactive synthesis, where transformation specifications are converted into equivalent transducers. These specifications are presented in a modular way, and composing the resultant machines simulates the full specification. An important result by Dartois et al. shows that composition of two-way transducers enjoy a polynomial composition when the underlying transducer is reversible, that is, if they are both deterministic and co-deterministic. This is a major improvement over general deterministic two-way transducers, for which composition causes a doubly exponential blow-up in the size of the inputs in general. Moreover, they show that reversible two-way transducers have the same expressiveness as deterministic two-way transducers. However, the question of expressiveness of reversible transducers over infinite words is still open. In this article, we introduce the class of reversible two-way transducers over infinite words and show that they enjoy the same expressive power as deterministic two-way transducers over infinite words. This is done through a non-trivial, effective construction inducing a single exponential blow-up in the set of states. Further, we also prove that composing two reversible two-way transducers over infinite words incurs only a polynomial complexity, thereby providing foundations for efficient procedure for composition of transducers over infinite words.

Abstract:We shall characterize the structure of invertible substitutions on three-letter alphabet. We show that any invertible substitution, after some cyclic operation, can be written as a finite product of permutations and Fibonacci's substitution. As a consequence, a matrix (of order 3 and with non-negative integral coefficients) is the matrix of an invertible substitution if and only if it is a finite product of non-negative elementary matrices.

Abstract:We show that the emptiness problem for two-way nondeterministic finite automata augmented with one reversal-bounded counter (i.e., the counter alternates between nondecreasing and nonincreasing modes for a fixed number of times) operating on bounded languages (i.e., subsets of w1*…wk* for some nonnull words w1,…,wk) is decidable, resolving an open problem. The proof is a rather involved reduction to the solution of a special class of Diophantine systems of degree 2 via a class of programs called two-phase programs.

Abstract:The decidability of determining equivalence of deterministic multitape automata (or transducers) was a longstanding open problem until it was resolved by Harju and Karhum\"{a}ki in the early 1990s. Their proof of decidability yields a co_NP upper bound, but apparently not much more is known about the complexity of the problem. In this paper we give an alternative proof of decidability, which follows the basic strategy of Harju and Karhumaki but replaces their use of group theory with results on matrix algebras. From our proof we obtain a simple randomised algorithm for deciding language equivalence of deterministic multitape automata and, more generally, multiplicity equivalence of nondeterministic multitape automata. The algorithm involves only matrix exponentiation and runs in polynomial time for each fixed number of tapes. If the two input automata are inequivalent then the algorithm outputs a word on which they differ.

Abstract:We investigate non-wellfounded proof systems based on parsimonious logic, a weaker variant of linear logic where the exponential modality ! is interpreted as a constructor for streams over finite data. Logical consistency is maintained at a global level by adapting a standard progressing criterion. We present an infinitary version of cut-elimination based on finite approximations, and we prove that, in presence of the progressing criterion, it returns well-defined non-wellfounded proofs at its limit. Furthermore, we show that cut-elimination preserves the progressive criterion and various regularity conditions internalizing degrees of proof-theoretical uniformity. Finally, we provide a denotational semantics for our systems based on the relational model.

Abstract:Let S be a semigroup and T be a subsemigroup of finite index in S (that is, the set S∖T is finite). The subsemigroup T is also called a large subsemigroup of S. It is well known that if T has a finite complete rewriting system, then so does S. In this paper, we will prove the converse, that is, if S has a finite complete rewriting system, then so does T. Our proof is purely combinatorial and also constructive.

The Inclusion Problem for Forest Languages under Substitutions

Abstract:We consider algorithms and lower bounds for various problems over forest languages; as input models we allow forest algebras, deterministic forest automata and nondeterministic forest automata. For the equivalence problem, we give an almost-linear-time algorithm for both forest algebras and deterministic forest automata; this is complemented by a polynomial time hardness result. The emptiness problem is complete for polynomial time over each of the three models. Additionally, we consider the emptiness of intersection problem for forest algebras and deterministic forest automata; this problem turns out to be complete for exponential time. It is well-known that the corresponding problems for word languages are complete for nondeterministic logarithmic space and for polynomial space, respectively. Equipped with this toolbox of algorithms and lower bounds, we consider various inclusion problems for regular forest languages under substitutions. The substitutions in this paper replace leaf variables by forest languages. Depending on the direction of the inclusion, the problem for a given substitution is either complete for polynomial time or for exponential time; in particular, the equivalence problem under substitutions is complete for exponential time and, hence, more difficult than the equivalence problem for forest languages without substitutions. If we ask whether there exists a substitution such that a given inclusion holds, then this problem is either complete for NP or exponential time, depending on whether we consider inclusion or equivalence; moreover, the problem is undecidable if the substitution is applied on both sides.

Abstract:We consider the problems of language inclusion and language equivalence for Vector Addition Systems with States (VASSes) with the acceptance condition defined by the set of accepting states (and more generally by some upward-closed conditions). In general the problem of language equivalence is undecidable even for one-dimensional VASSes, thus to get decidability we investigate restricted subclasses. On one hand we show that the problem of language inclusion of a VASS in k-ambiguous VASS (for any natural k) is decidable and even in Ackermann. On the other hand we prove that the language equivalence problem is Ackermann-hard already for deterministic VASSes. These two results imply Ackermann-completeness for language inclusion and equivalence in several possible restrictions. Some of our techniques can be also applied in much broader generality in infinite-state systems, namely for some subclass of well-structured transition systems.

Abstract:The decidability of the reachability problem for finitary PCF has been used as a theoretical basis for fully automated verification tools for functional programs. The reachability problem, however, often becomes undecidable for a slight extension of finitary PCF with side effects, such as exceptions, algebraic effects, and references, which hindered the extension of the above verification tools for supporting functional programs with side effects. In this paper, we first give simple proofs of the undecidability of four extensions of finitary PCF, which would help us understand and analyze the source of undecidability. We then focus on an extension with references, and give a decidable fragment using a type system. To our knowledge, this is the first non-trivial decidable fragment that features higher-order recursive functions containing reference cells.

Abstract:A field K in a ring language L is finitely undecidable if Cons(Σ) is undecidable for every nonempty finite Σ⊆Th(K;L) . We adapt arguments originating with Cherlin-van den Dries-Macintyre/Ershov (for PAC fields) and Haran (for PRC fields) to prove all PAC and PRC fields are finitely undecidable. We describe the difficulties that arise in adapting the proof to P p C fields, and show no bounded P p C field is finitely axiomatisable. This work is drawn from the author's PhD thesis [44, Chapter 4] .

Abstract:Deterministic two-way transducers define the robust class of regular functions which is, among other good properties, closed under composition. However, the best known algorithms for composing two-way transducers cause a double exponential blow-up in the size of the inputs. In this paper, we introduce a class of transducers for which the composition has polynomial complexity. It is the class of reversible transducers, for which the computation steps can be reversed deterministically. While in the one-way setting this class is not very expressive, we prove that any two-way transducer can be made reversible through a single exponential blow-up. As a consequence, we prove that the composition of two-way transducers can be done with a single exponential blow-up in the number of states. A uniformization of a relation is a function with the same domain and which is included in the original relation. Our main result actually states that we can uniformize any non-deterministic two-way transducer by a reversible transducer with a single exponential blow-up, improving the known result by de Souza which has a quadruple exponential complexity. As a side result, our construction also gives a quadratic transformation from copyless streaming string transducers to two-way transducers, improving the exponential previous bound.

Abstract:We consider dynamical systems arising from substitutions over a finite alphabet. We prove that such a system is linearly repetitive if and only if it is minimal. Based on this characterization we extend various results from primitive substitutions to minimal substitutions. This includes applications to random Schrödinger operators and to number theory.

Abstract:We review the close relationship between abstract machines for (call-by-name or call-by-value) lambda-calculi (extended with Felleisen's C) and sequent calculus, reintroducing on the way Curien-Herbelin's syntactic kit expressing the duality of computation. We use this kit to provide a term language for a presentation of LK (with conjunction, disjunction, and negation), and to transcribe cut elimination as (non confluent) rewriting. A key slogan here, which may appear here in print for the first time, is that commutative cut elimination rules are explicit substitution propagation rules. We then describe the focalised proof search discipline (in the classical setting), and narrow down the language and the rewriting rules to a confluent calculus (a variant of the second author's focalising system L). We then define a game of patterns and counterpatterns, leading us to a fully focalised finitary syntax for a synthetic presentation of classical logic, that provides a quotient on (focalised) proofs, abstracting out the order of decomposition of negative connectives.
