Abstract:The emergence of COVID-19 has produced unprecedented change in daily life activities leading to major impacts on psychological wellbeing and sleep among individuals worldwide. The study aimed to assess levels of fear, stress, anxiety, depression, and insomnia among undergraduate nursing students in four countries two years after the start of the pandemic. An international, multi-centre cross-sectional electronic survey was conducted between December 2021 and April 2022. An on-line questionnaire was distributed via Qualtrics® and JISC® software. Instruments included the Fear of COVID-19 Scale, the Perceived Stress Scale, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the Insomnia Severity Index, and a demographics and academic background questionnaire. The independent variables included demographic and academic backgrounds, while fear level, stress, anxiety, depression, and insomnia were the dependent variables. A total of 918 undergraduate nursing students from KSA, Oman, UK, and UAE were participants in the study. Students presented with stress (91.6%), anxiety (69.1%), depression (59.8%), and insomnia (73.2%). The participants' mean Fear of COVID-19 Scale score was 12.97 (SD = 6.14). There were significant positive relationships between fear of COVID-19, stress, anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Undergraduate nursing students experienced moderate to severe levels of Fear of COVID-19, stress, anxiety, depression, and insomnia two years after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Psychological intervention and peer support are needed to reduce the long-term adverse outcomes of mental health problems and insomnia. It is important to introduce education about crisis management of infectious disease during pandemics into the nursing curriculum to increase student knowledge and improve their preparedness for such emergencies.
Impact of COVID-19 lockdown on sleep patterns and the related problems among nursing students

Abstract:Aim: To evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on sleep patterns and quality among nursing students in our college. Design: A cross-sectional study was carried out. Methods: A total of 302 nursing students aged 18-25 years, representing both genders and various academic levels, participated in this study. A pre-validated, self-administered questionnaire was used to assess sleep quality during COVID-19 and it was distributed through various social media platforms for data collection. Results: Female students comprised the majority (92.1%) of participants. Of 332 nursing students, 302 completed the questionnaire, yielding a 91% response rate. Statistically significant differences were observed before and during the COVID-19 lockdown regarding the need to sleep after waking, feeling refreshed upon waking, satisfaction with individual sleep patterns and experiencing restless and troubled sleep (p = 0.001). Additionally, approximately one-third of nursing students (32.9%) reported poor sleep quality during the COVID-19 pandemic, with minimal impact on the total sleep hours among the studied cohorts. Public contribution: The COVID-19 pandemic has statistically significant impacted nursing students' sleep quality and levels. Acknowledging these challenges and planning for providing supporting measurements is essential to ensuring that nursing students can maintain their physical and mental health, which is critical for their ability to provide quality healthcare.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: COVID-19 infection is transmitted easily and quickly, and nurses constitute the riskiest group of healthcare workers. Therefore, they may experience high levels of stress and sleep problems. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted in order to evaluate the stress levels and sleep quality of nurses working during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: The cross-sectional study was conducted with 316 nurses working in a pandemic hospital in a city center. A descriptive form, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) were used to collect data. RESULTS: A positive, moderately significant correlation was found between the average PSQI score of nurses and the average perceived stress score (p≤0.001). Multiple regressions determined that shift work, stress level, a coworker having COVID-19, being out of home due to the risk of transmission, and having a person older than 65 in the home were effective predictors of sleep quality (R2 = 33.5, p≤0.001). Age, years worked, fear of infecting the family with COVID-19, receiving COVID-19 education, regular nutrition, and sleep quality were effective predictors of stress level (R2 = 32.2, p≤0.001). CONCLUSION: It was determined that nurses have low sleep quality and high stress levels during the pandemic process.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: The outbreak of new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has affected the mental well-being of individuals of all ages, especially surgical nurses. This study aimed to explore the association between self-reported mental health and subjective sleep quality of the Turkish surgical nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic.MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data were collected from N = 453 surgical nurses using online snowball sampling through social media between May 10 and June 10, 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The data were collected using the Nurse Information Form, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 Scale (GAD-7), and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), and The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).RESULTS: While 77.3% of them were determined to provide care to patients with COVID-19, and 2.0% of them had a positive COVID-19 test. A total of 76.2% of surgical nurses were stated to be negatively affected by the pandemic process and 56.2% of them were scared of infecting someone else with the virus. Surgical nurses had a mean GAD-7score of 8.7±5.1, a mean CES-D score of 27.8±12.5, and a mean PSQI score of 10.4±3.5. A positive and moderate level of relationship was found between PSQI and CES-D and GAD-7 levels (r=0.558; r=0.554; p<0.001, respectively).CONCLUSIONS: The surgical nurses were found to show signs of depression, had mild anxiety and had poor sleep quality. The poor sleep quality of the surgical nurses was found to be associated with anxiety and depression symptoms.
Fear Related to COVID-19, Mental Health Issues, and Predictors of Insomnia among Female Nursing College Students during the Pandemic

Abstract:Fear of infection has been sparked by the advent of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Insomnia in college students, especially its correlations and predictions with mental diseases, remains a research concern. Aim: To estimate the prevalence of fear related to COVID-19, depression, anxiety, and insomnia among female nursing college students throughout the pandemic and to determine the predictors of insomnia. Methods: A web-based cross-sectional descriptive study used 145 female nursing college students. Results: Students reported fear related to COVID-19, depression, and anxiety at rates of 79.3%, 30.2%, and 35.2%, respectively. Insomnia disturbed 24.7% of students. Anxiety predicted worsening insomnia in the student (AOR = 1.08, 95% CI: 0.92–0.97, p < 0.001). Fear related to COVID-19 was also a predictor (AOR = 0.96, 95% CI: 1.07–1.21, p < 0.05). Additionally, when depression severity declined, the chance of insomnia improved (AOR = 0.87, 95% CI: 0.85–0.91, p < 0.001). Insomnia was more common in chronically unwell students (AOR = 1.50, 95% CI = 1.01–2.24, p < 0.05). Conclusion: During the COVID-19 pandemic, university students' mental health should be monitored, and all essential safeguards should be taken, including resource allocation, awareness raising efforts, and the building of a mental health counseling facility.

Abstract:PurposeThe aim of this study was to assess current situations regarding anxiety and fear of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) level among nursing students. Design and MethodsA descriptive correlation design was adopted. The sample consisted of 234 nursing students. Data were collected using sociodemographic form, Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and Fear of COVID-19 scale. FindingsThe mean BAI score of the students was 26.56 ± 8.86 and Fear of COVID-19 total score was 18.95 ± 7.00. A positive correlation between total scores of the BAI and Fear of COVID-19. The results of this study reveal that anxiety and fear of COVID-19 levels were high among nursing students. Practice ImplicationsThese findings have underlined there is an urgent need for interventions to reduce anxiety and fear of COVID-19 among nursing students.

Abstract:Introduction: Long-term stress has a significant impact on people's ability to fall asleep. The study was conducted with the aim to assess the sleep quality and stress during COVID-19 Pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was done among nursing students. One nursing campus was selected from the total of six bachelor level nursing campuses in the Pokhara from simple random lottery method. All the bachelor level students of that campus were included in the study. Data were collected through self-administered questionnaire using Pittsburgh sleep quality index and perceived stress scale. The collected data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science 16. Chi square test was used to identify the association between level of sleep quality and COVID related variables. Pearson’s correlation was used to examine the relationship between stress score with sleep quality. P value <0.05 was considered as statistically significant in all inferential statistical procedures. Results: The mean age was 24.208±3.028, 31.4 percent of students lived with their family and 81 percent of them had clinical posting during COVID-19. The 61.9 percent of students had good sleep quality whereas 38.1 percent had poor sleep quality. Likewise, majority (91.4 %) of students had moderate stress. A significant association was observed between sleep quality and students infected with COVID-19. Pearson’s correlation showed the students’ stress had significantly positive correlation with sleep quality (P=0.030). Conclusions: The study concluded that prevalence of poor sleep quality was found in more than one third of the nursing students. The majority of students experienced moderate level of stress during COVID-19 Pandemic.

Abstract:Little is known about the experiences of nursing students during the pandemic process. This research was conducted to determine the feelings, thoughts, and experiences of nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic process. This qualitative study was conducted with 47 first-year nursing students of a faculty that experienced the COVID-19 pandemic between 3–30 April 2020. Student nurses stated that they felt fear and anxiety; they liked this situation in the beginning due to the constraints during the pandemic process, but due to the prolongation of this process, they experienced boredom due to monotonous extraordinary days of doing the same things every day and realized that every moment before the pandemic was very valuable. In addition, the students stated that rich and poor are equal in the face of the virus and that all humanity has learned solidarity by leaving wars, fights, and superiority efforts. In this process, it was found that nursing students have negative coping methods, such as not being able to manage time well due to constraints at home and spending too much time on the phone, internet, and computer. In this context, empowering nursing students to cope with challenging emotions and thoughts starting from their educational life will contribute to the development of both students and the profession.

The Effect of Covid-19 Fear and Death Anxiety on the Professional Values of Intern Nursing Students Before Clinical Practices

Abstract:Aim: The study was conducted to determine the effect of COVID-19 fear and death anxiety on intern nursing students before they enter clinical practice, focusing on changes in their professional values. Method: The population of this descriptive and cross-sectional study included a total of 218 intern nursing students from a university in Turkey, the sample of the study consisted of 215, which is among the top five provinces where the COVID-19 pandemic is felt most intense in Turkey. Results: The students had moderate COVID-19 fear and death anxiety and good professional values. A positive correlation was found between the level of the COVID-19 Fear Scale and both the Abdel-Khalek Death Anxiety Scale and the safety sub-dimension of professional values. All of the sub-dimensions of professional values and fear of COVID-19 median were found to be higher in the students who desire to clinical practice. The factors affecting the Death Anxiety Scale included caring for bedridden patients. Further, fear of COVID-19 factors affecting was the desire for clinical practice negatively. Conclusion: During the pandemic process, it was determined COVID-19 fear and death anxiety. It was determined that the professional values of the students were not affected and those with high human dignity, responsibility, and safety values wanted to start clinical practice. So, it is thought that psychological counseling and pieces of training for the development of professional values will be beneficial in the prevention of leaving the profession or in the development of values during the pandemic process.
Mental Health of Nursing Students amid Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic

Abstract:The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is a global disaster, and recent studies have shown its association with increasing mental health problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and stress. Nursing students, especially nursing interns, may be shunned, harassed, and even blamed as potential COVID-19 spreaders, though they were an important reserve force against COVID-19 and other diseases. Of note, the psychological influences of COVID-19 on nursing students remained unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the mental health of nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted on nursing students in a vocational college from April 12 to 23, 2020. The Impact of Event Scale-Revised, 21-item Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were used to assess the degree of symptoms of PTSD, depression, anxiety, stress, and insomnia, respectively. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the potential risk factors for the psychological symptoms. A total of 1,780 college nursing students were asked to participate in this online survey, with 1,532 complete responses. In total, 682 (44.5%) college nursing students reported having PTSD, 358 (22.8%) students reported insomnia, and few students reported depression (n = 45, 2.9%), anxiety (n = 44, 2.9%), and stress (n = 17, 1.1%) symptoms. As compared with junior, female, and rural nursing students, the senior, male, and urban nursing students had higher rates of PTSD, depression, anxiety, stress, respectively, whereas male nursing students had a higher insomnia rate. Multivariable analysis showed that senior nursing students had higher risks of PTSD, depression, anxiety; being male was associated with higher risks of PTSD, depression, anxiety, stress, and insomnia; and urban nursing students had higher risks of PTSD, depression, anxiety, and stress. In summary, a considerable number of nursing students reported mental symptoms of PTSD and insomnia, though few reported mental symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. Furthermore, senior, male, and urban nursing students are at risk for developing mental symptoms. Appropriate psychological interventions should be implemented to assure the mental health of nursing students.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic has forced universities to change their teaching and learning activities using online methods, which can impact students' stress problems, including undergraduate nursing students. This study aims to identify the relationship between stress levels and sleep disorders among nursing students in online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional study included 253 nursing students from the Faculty of Nursing at Universitas Padjadjaran between 2018 and 2021, and completed the Student Nurse Stress Index (SNSI) questionnaire and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire from June 2022 to July 2022. Study findings, all individuals reported experiencing moderate to severe stress levels and had an impact on sleep disorders, with a sig. (2-tailed) namely 0.001 (<0.05) and correlation (r) 0.290. The majority reported moderate stress, i.e. less disturbed sleep (70.6%), disturbed (63.2%), and very disturbed (52.6%). Meanwhile, severe stress, namely disturbed sleep (33%) and very disturbed (47.4%). Although, there were 14.3% had mild stress and slept less disturbed. The highest levels of stress and sleep disorders were reported by women (85.4%), 17-21 years old (78.7%), and lived with their family (77.1%). This study highlights that the COVID-19 pandemic related to stress and sleep disorders has a significant relationship. Therefore, future studies using meta-regression are needed to investigate the factors influencing and exacerbating stress and sleep disorder among nursing students in online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic to minimize results bias.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Disasters such as the COVID-19 pandemic have serious traumatic effects on people, who may experience sleep problems, anxiety, and fear in the face of such a stressor. OBJECTIVE: This study is conducted to examine the relationship between sleep quality and fear of COVID-19, anxiety, and personality traits in working women. METHOD: This research was a descriptive study between June to August 2021. The study was conducted with 425 participants. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, COVID-19 Fear Scale, Beck Anxiety Scale, and the revised Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Short Form were applied to the participants. T-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation analysis, were used. RESULTS: In the study, it was found that the total average score of the Fear of COVID-19 Scale was 18.83±5.5, while the score of sleep quality was 5.40±3.3 and the anxiety score was 14.01±12.4. On the other hand, the score of Extraversion was determined as 3.73±1.7, Neuroticism was 3.79±1.8, and Psychoticism was 1.97±1 in the study. Moreover, a statistically significant positive correlation was found between sleep quality and fear of COVID-19, anxiety, and neuroticism in working women (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep disturbance; daytime dysfunction, use of sleep medication, sleep duration, sleep latency with anxiety; sleep latency, sleep quality, daytime dysfunction, sleep duration were found to be linked to neuroticism, and use of sleep medication and sleep duration were found to be linked to psychoticism. It was concluded that there was a relationship between sleep quality and fear of COVID-19, anxiety, and personality traits in working women.

Abstract:Abstract Aim: In this study, we aimed to analyzed symptoms of anxiety and depression, excessive daytime sleepiness, and sleep habits in students during the Covid-19 pandemic. Methods: Two hundred children who received online education at home during the COVID-19 pandemic were included in this study. The students were divided into three groups as primary school, middle school, and high school. Abstract:Objectives Following the declaration of the pandemic, students' education has to be done at a distance due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This study evaluated the association of university students' COVID-19 phobia, pain severity, sleep quality, physical activity, fatigue levels, and quality of life on students' achievement. Methods This cross-sectional survey was conducted by including 353 students from the university faculty of health sciences. The Pain Quality Assessment Scale was used to assess pain, the Fatigue Severity Scale to evaluate fatigue, the COVID-19 Phobia Scale to assess fear of disease, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form to evaluate physical activity level, and the Jenkins Sleep Scale to assess sleep quality, The Short Form-36 to determine the quality of life, and Online Learning Systems Acceptance Scale to evaluate satisfaction with distance education. Multiple linear regression and path analysis were conducted to identify factors associated with academic achievement. Results It was found that age (B = 0.045; P = 0.040), BMI (B = −0.200; P = 0.004), and physical (B = 0.128; P = 0.008), psychological (B = 0.057; P = 0.012) and social (B = 0.189; P = 0.018) domains of quality of life were associated with the level of achievement. Conclusions Precautions must be taken to improve students' academic achievement and quality of life in preparing for the future against infectious and epidemic diseases.

Abstract:Background: Multiple studies have documented the impact of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic on nursing students' mental health and learning experiences; however, none have synthesized these findings. Purpose: To identify the range and prevalence of mental health disorders and related stressors experienced by nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic by synthesizing the relevant literature published between 2020 and 2022. Methods: This scoping review examined the challenges and mental health consequences experienced by nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The databases were searched for relevant articles. Eight studies were identified and included in this analysis. Results: Three themes emerged: Fear of COVID-19, Sleep disturbances; Anxiety, Depression, and Stress as a consequence of experiencing the challenges caused by the pandemic. Implications for practice: Universities should provide nursing students with support that focuses on disaster management education and coping strategies to help improve their mental health.

Abstract:Purpose: All people especially students are affected psychosocially due to reasons such as distance education, uncertainty, loneliness during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study was performed to identify the levels of COVID-19 fear, perceived stress, and psychological resilience of the university students studying at health programs. Methods: A total of 518 students participated in this cross-sectional study. The research data were collected using the Descriptive Characteristics Form, the Fear of COVID-19 Scale, the Perceived Stress Scale-10, and the Brief Resilience Scale. Results: The participant students had medium-level COVID-19 fear, perceived stress, and psychological resilience. It was found that the gender, having a family member who had COVID-19, and not having a family member who died of COVID-19 affected the participant students’ levels of COVID-19 fear, perceived stress, and psychological resilience. Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic affected the health professional candidates’ fear, stress, and psychological resilience. The initiatives can be planned to reduce the negative effects of the pandemic and enhancing coping skills of university students studying in health programs.

Abstract:ABSTRACT: The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the mental health and educational experiences of nursing students in undergraduate and graduate programs. A larger mixed-methods study aimed to understand how COVID-19 impacted personal lives and learning experiences of students across all programs levels. This article reports on qualitative data obtained from focus groups organized by student program level. Six themes emerged, including fear and uncertainty, trust in God, educational and career concerns, concerns about family, mental health issues, and isolation/lack of human touch. Key areas covered are the emotional and psychological effects of COVID-19 and its factors and the role of faith during COVID-19 among nursing students.

Investigating fear, depressive symptoms and coping mechanisms among Egyptian nursing students amidst the covid-19 pandemic: a cross-sectional study

Abstract:Abstract Background Amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, nursing students' contribution to combating this global health crisis is becoming more significant. However, we need a more comprehensive understanding of the psychological impact of this crisis on these students. Therefore, this study holds immense importance as it offers valuable insights into the connection between COVID-19 pandemic fear, coping strategies, and depressive symptoms among nursing students. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted to collect and analyze data from 319 undergraduate nursing students. They participated in the study by responding to an online questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of the Fear of the Coronavirus Questionnaire, Brief Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced, and the Beck Depression Inventory-II. Results The study revealed that 45.5% of the participants had a severe fear of COVID-19, 21.9% showed severe depressive symptoms, and 64.6% used moderate coping mechanisms. A positive correlation ( r = 0.160, p = 0.01) was found between the fear of COVID-19 and depressive symptoms. Interestingly, this correlation turned negative ( r = -0.074, p = 0.01) when adaptive coping strategies such as religion, acceptance, planning, positive reframing, instrumental support, emotional support, active coping, and humor were used. However, when participants resorted to maladaptive coping strategies like venting, self-distraction, self-blame, behavioral disengagement, denial, and substance abuse, the correlation between high fear levels and depressive symptoms became positive ( r = 0.352, p = 0.01). Conclusion The study demonstrated that the fear of COVID-19 and depressive symptoms among nursing students are significantly correlated. However, the nature of this correlation is influenced by the type of coping strategies employed. Adaptive coping mechanisms can mitigate the impact of fear on depressive symptoms. In contrast, maladaptive coping can exacerbate the relationship between fear and depressive symptoms. Therefore, promoting adaptive coping strategies could be a crucial approach to managing the psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
