Abstract:We introduce a novel and general approach for digitalization of line segments in the plane that satisfies a set of axioms naturally arising from Euclidean axioms. In particular, we show how to derive such a system of digital segments from any total order on the integers. As a consequence, using a well-chosen total order, we manage to define a system of digital segments such that all digital segments are, in Hausdorff metric, optimally close to their corresponding Euclidean segments, thus giving an explicit construction that resolves the main question of Chun et al.

Some related concepts from differential geometry, such as normal, curvature, gradient, Laplacian and their counterparts on digital geometry are also reviewed for understanding the strength and weakness of various digital geometry processing methods.

Abstract:This paper presents new results about digital straight segments, their recognition and related properties. They come from the study of the arithmetically based recognition algorithm proposed by I. Debled-Rennesson and J.-P. Reveill\`es in 1995 [Debled95]. We indeed exhibit the relations describing the possible changes in the parameters of the digital straight segment under investigation. This description is achieved by considering new parameters on digital segments: instead of their arithmetic description, we examine the parameters related to their combinatoric description. As a result we have a better understanding of their evolution during recognition and analytical formulas to compute them. We also show how this evolution can be projected onto the Stern-Brocot tree. These new relations have interesting consequences on the geometry of digital curves. We show how they can for instance be used to bound the slope difference between consecutive maximal segments.

Abstract:In light of the growing interest in studying the affective and aesthetic attributes of curvature, the present paper describes four digital image processing techniques that can be used to objectively discriminate between angular and curvilinear stimuli. MATLAB scripts for each of the techniques accompany the paper. Three studies are then reported that evaluate the efficacy of five metrics, derived from the four techniques, at quantifying the degree of angularity depicted in an image. Images of simple polygons (Study 1), artistic drawings of everyday objects (Study 2), and real-world objects, typefaces, and abstract patterns (Study 3) were analyzed. Logistic regression models were used to determine the relative importance of the metrics at distinguishing between angular and curvilinear items. With one exception, all of the metrics were capable of distinguishing between angular and curvilinear items at a level above chance, but some metrics were better at doing so than others, and their discriminative capacity was influenced by the characteristics of the image. The strengths and limitations of the metrics are discussed, as well as some practical recommendations.

Abstract:Interior and exterior angle vectors of polytopes capture curvature information at faces of all dimensions and can be seen as metric variants of $f$-vectors. In this context, Gram's relation takes the place of the Euler--Poincaré relation as the unique linear relation among interior angles. We show the existence and uniqueness of Euler--Poincaré-type relations for generalized angle vectors by building a bridge to the algebraic combinatorics of geometric lattices, generalizing work of Klivans--Swartz. We introduce flag-angles of polytopes as a geometric counterpart to flag-$f$-vectors. Flag-angles generalize the angle deficiencies of Descartes--Shephard, Grassmann angles, and spherical intrinsic volumes. Using the machinery of incidence algebras, we relate flag-angles of zonotopes to flag-$f$-vectors of graded posets. This allows us to determine the linear relations satisfied by interior/exterior flag-angle vectors.

History and Overview

Abstract:The early Renaissance artist Albrecht Durer published a book on geometry a few years before he died. This was intended to be a guide for young craftsmen and artists giving them both practical and mathematical tools for their trade. In the second part of that book, Durer gives compass and straightedge constructions for the 'regular' polygons from the triangle to the 16-gon. We will examine each of these constructions using the original 1525 text and diagrams along with a translation. Then we will use Mathematica to carry out the constructions which are only approximate, in order to compare them with the regular case. In Appendix A, we discuss Durer's approximate trisection method for angles, which is surprisingly accurate. Appendix B outlines what is known currently about compass and straightedge constructions and includes two elegant 19th century constructions.
On the angular control of rotating lasers by means of line calculus on hyperboloids

Abstract:We propose a new paradigm for modelling and calibrating laser scanners with rotation symmetry, as is the case for Lidars or for galvanometric laser systems with one or two rotating mirrors. Instead of bothering about the intrinsic parameters of a physical model, we use the geometric properties of the device to model it as a specific configuration of lines, which can be recovered by a line-data-driven procedure. Compared to universal data-driven methods that train general line models, our algebraic-geometric approach only requires a few measurements. For example, a galvanometric laser scanner with two mirrors is modelled as a grid of hyperboloids represented by a grid of 3x3 lines, providing a new type of lookup table: containing not more than 9 elements, lines rather than points, where we replace the approximating interpolation with exact affine combinations of lines. The proposed method is validated in a realistic virtual setting. As a collateral contribution, we present a robust algorithm for fitting ruled surfaces of revolution on noisy line measurements.

Abstract:This thesis presents important insights and concepts related to the topic of the extraction of geometric primitives from the edge contours of digital images. Three specific problems related to this topic have been studied, viz., polygonal approximation of digital curves, tangent estimation of digital curves, and ellipse fitting anddetection from digital curves. For the problem of polygonal approximation, two fundamental problems have been addressed. First, the nature of the performance evaluation metrics in relation to the local and global fitting characteristics has been studied. Second, an explicit error bound of the error introduced by digitizing a continuous line segment has been derived and used to propose a generic non-heuristic parameter independent framework which can be used in several dominant point detection methods. For the problem of tangent estimation for digital curves, a simple method of tangent estimation has been proposed. It is shown that the method has a definite upper bound of the error for conic digital curves. It has been shown that the method performs better than almost all (seventy two) existing tangent estimation methods for conic as well as several non-conic digital curves. For the problem of fitting ellipses on digital curves, a geometric distance minimization model has been considered. An unconstrained, linear, non-iterative, and numerically stable ellipse fitting method has been proposed and it has been shown that the proposed method has better selectivity for elliptic digital curves (high true positive and low false positive) as compared to several other ellipse fitting methods. For the problem of detecting ellipses in a set of digital curves, several innovative and fast pre-processing, grouping, and hypotheses evaluation concepts applicable for digital curves have been proposed and combined to form an ellipse detection method.

Abstract:In a computational topology of digital images, simplexes are replaced by Delta sets in approximating image object shapes. For simplicity, simplexes and Delta sets are restricted to the Euclidean plane. A planar simplex is either a vertex, a line segment or a filled triangle. In this study of image shapes, a planar Delta set is a sequence of ordered simplicial complexes. The basic approach is to approximate an image shape by decomposing an image region containing the shape into combinations of Delta sets called Delta complexes. This approach to image shapes is motivated by the ease with which shapes covered by Delta complexes can be measured and compared. A number of basic results directly related to shape analysis are also given in the context of Delta complex proximities.

Abstract:We present a general and intuitive ambiguity model for intersections, junctions and other structures in binary edge images. The model is combined with edge tracing, where edges are ordered sequences of connected pixels. The objective is to provide a versatile preprocessing method for tasks such as figure-ground segmentation, object recognition, topological analysis, etc. By using only a small set of straightforward principles, the results are intuitive to describe. This helps to implement subsequent processing steps, such as resolving ambiguous edge connections at junctions. By using an augmented edge map, neighboring edges can be directly accessed using quick local search operations. The edge tracing uses recursion, which leads to compact programming code. We explain our algorithm using pseudocode, compare it with related methods, and show how simple modular postprocessing steps can be used to optimize the results. The complete algorithm, including all data structures, requires less than 50 lines of pseudocode. We also provide a C++ implementation of our method.

Abstract:After introducing a graph connectedness induced by a given set of paths of the same length, we focus on the 2-adjacency graph on the digital line Z {\mathbb{Z}} with a certain set of paths of length n n for every positive integer n n . The connectedness in the strong product of three copies of the graph is used to define digital Jordan surfaces. These are obtained as polyhedral surfaces bounding the polyhedra that can be face-to-face tiled with digital tetrahedra.

Abstract:In 2018, Szöllősi and Östergård enumerated some sets of equiangular lines with common angle $\arccos(1/3)$ with a computer. Furthermore, they verified that the numbers $\omega(n)$ of sets of $n$ equiangular lines with common angle $\arccos(1/3)$ in dimension $7$ are almost symmetric around $n=14$. In this paper, we construct the other sets of equiangular lines with common angle $\arccos(1/3)$ from root lattices of type $A$ or $D$ with the aid of switching roots. In addition, we prove that the numbers $\omega(n)$ are almost symmetric without a computer.

A Review of the Asymmetric Numeral System and Its Applications to Digital Images

Abstract:The Asymmetric Numeral System (ANS) is a new entropy compression method that the industry has highly valued in recent years. ANS is valued by the industry precisely because it captures the benefits of both Huffman Coding and Arithmetic Coding. Surprisingly, compared with Huffman and Arithmetic coding, systematic descriptions of ANS are relatively rare. In 2017, JPEG proposed a new image compression standard-JPEG XL, which uses ANS as its entropy compression method. This fact implies that the ANS technique is mature and will play a kernel role in compressing digital images. However, because the realization of ANS involves combination optimization and the process is not unique, only a few members in the compression academia community and the domestic industry have noticed the progress of this powerful entropy compression approach. Therefore, we think a thorough overview of ANS is beneficial, and this idea brings our contributions to the first part of this work. In addition to providing compact representations, ANS has the following prominent feature: just like its Arithmetic Coding counterpart, ANS has Chaos characteristics. The chaotic behavior of ANS is reflected in two aspects. The first one is that the corresponding compressed output will change a lot if there is a tiny change in the original input; moreover, the reverse is also applied. The second is that ANS compressing an image will produce two intertwined outcomes: a positive integer (aka. state) and a bitstream segment. Correct ANS decompression is possible only when both can be precisely obtained. Combining these two characteristics helps process digital images, e.g., art collection images and medical images, to achieve compression and encryption simultaneously. In the second part of this work, we explore the characteristics of ANS in depth and develop its applications specific to joint compression and encryption of digital images.

Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> <p class="a-plus-plus">The geometric constructions obtained with only straightedge and compass are famous and play a special role in the development of geometry. On the one hand, the constructibility of figures is a key ingredient in Euclid geometry and, on the other hand, unconstructibility gave birth to famous open problems of the ancient Greece which were unlocked only in the nineteenth century using discoveries in algebra. This paper discusses the mechanization of straightedge and compass constructions. It focuses on the algebraic approaches and presents two methods which are implemented; one is due to Lebesgue and the other one was jointly designed by Gao and Chou. Some links between the algebraic approach of constructions and synthetic geometry are described.</p>

Abstract:The Erdős-Anning theorem states that every point set in the Euclidean plane with integer distances must be either collinear or finite. More strongly, for any (non-degenerate) triangle of diameter $\delta$, at most $O(\delta^2)$ points can have integer distances from all three triangle vertices. We prove the same results for any strictly convex distance function on the plane, and analogous results for every two-dimensional complete Riemannian manifold of bounded genus and for geodesic distance on the boundary of every three-dimensional Euclidean convex set. As a consequence, we resolve a 1983 question of Richard Guy on the equilateral dimension of Riemannian manifolds. Our proofs are based on the properties of additively weighted Voronoi diagrams of these distances.

On Distinct Angles in the Plane

Abstract:We prove that if $N$ points lie in convex position in the plane then they determine $N^{1+ 3/23-o(1)}$ distinct angles, provided the points do not lie on a common circle. This is the first super-linear bound on the distinct angles problem that has received recent attention. This is derived from a more general claim that if $N$ points in the convex position in the real plane determine $KN$ distinct angles, then $K=\Omega(N^{1/4})$ or $\Omega(N/K)$ points are co-circular. The proof makes use of the implicit order one can give to points in convex position, recently used by Solymosi. Convex position also allows us to divide our set into two large ordered pieces. We use the squeezing lemma and the level sets of repeated angles to estimate the number of angles formed between these pieces. We obtain the main theorem using Stevens and Warren's convexity versus sum-set bound.
