Abstract:Catalytic combustion is an efficient method to eliminate CO and volatile organic compound (VOC) pollutants. CuMn2O4 spinel is a high-performance non-noble metal oxide catalyst for catalytic combustion and has the potential to replace noble metal catalysts. In order to further improve the catalytic activity of CuMn2O4 spinel, we propose a simple and low-cost approach to introduce numerous oxygen and metal vacancies simultaneously in situ on the CuMn2O4 spinel surface for the catalytic combustion of CO and VOCs. Alkali treatment was used to generate oxygen vacancies (VO), copper vacancies (VCu), and novel active sites (VO combines with Mn2O3 at the interface between Mn2O3(222) and CuMn2O4(311)) on the CuMn2O4 spinel surface. In the catalytic combustion of CO and VOCs, the vacancies and new active sites showed high activity and stability. The oxidation rate of CO increased by 4.13 times at 160 °C, and that of toluene increased by 11.63 times at 250 °C. Oxygen is easier to adsorb and dissociate on VO and novel sites, and the dissociated oxygen also more easily participates in the oxidation reaction. Furthermore, the lattice oxygen at VCu more readily participates in the oxidation reaction. This strategy is beneficial for the development of defect engineering on spinel surfaces and provides a new idea for improving the catalytic combustion activity of CuMn2O4 spinel.
Accurate construction of cobalt vacancies in Co3O4 to promote oxyhydroxide formation for water oxidation

Abstract:The introduction of defect sites has been widely reported to enhance electrocatalysts' abilities by increasing their affinity for reaction intermediates. Many different defect types, such as cation and anion vacancies, can exist in nano-materials. The different defect sites can make different contributions to the electrochemical ability. Therefore, a constructed defect should be accurate and specific, which makes it easy to identify the optimal defect type to facilitate electrochemical reactions. In this work, we used cobalt vacancies in Co 3 O 4 as an example and synthesized Co 3 O 4 with bivalent cobalt vacancies (Co 3 O 4 -VCo(II)) and trivalent cobalt vacancies (Co 3 O 4 -VCo(III)). Electrochemical results demonstrate that introducing cobalt vacancies considerably enhances the electrocatalytic activity of Co 3 O 4 . Furthermore, Co 3 O 4 -VCo(II) exhibits the most outstanding oxygen evolution ability with the fastest reaction kinetic rate. Quasi- operando X-ray photoelectron microscopy spectrum analysis results indicate that the presence of VCo(II) can accelerate CoOOH active site formation during the oxygen evolution reaction process. Density functional theory calculations reveal that introducing cobalt vacancies can endow Co 3 O 4 with metal-like conductivity. The O p-band center can be moved near the Fermi level, and the free energy barrier can be the lowest with the presence of VCo(II), resulting in a fast kinetics rate of oxygen exchange at the electrocatalyst surface and optimal adsorption energy to reaction intermediates to display excellent electrochemical ability. This work provides substantial guidance for designing efficient defect-rich electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Precise defects engineering of metal oxide catalyst holds great importance for the catalytic oxidation reaction. In this work, a judicious strategy of Cr atoms doping and partial de-doping was orchestrated to produce a defective Co3O4 catalyst. The co-existing of the remaining Cr dopants as well as metal vacancies could synergistically contribute to the crystal structure distortion, Co-O bond activation, abundant active oxygen generation and oxygen reactivity enhancement. Consequently, the catalytic performance for methane oxidation reaction was significantly boosted, with methane conversion rate normalized by the specific surface area of 0.114 μmol·m-2·s-1, 1.41 times that of the pure Co3O4 catalyst at reaction temperature of 295 oC. This work provides a viable methodology for the upgradation of Co3O4 catalysts for efficient methane oxidation.

Abstract:Most research studies reported that oxygen vacancies on transition metal oxides are crucial for improving the catalytic oxidation activities. However, few studies investigated the coexistence effect of metal defects and oxygen vacancies on the performances and mechanisms of catalysts. Herein, we present a facile approach for synthesizing a Co3–xO4–y catalyst with both cobalt defects and oxygen vacancies simultaneously, exhibiting significant thermo-/photothermo-catalytic performance for toluene oxidation (300 ppm, GHSV = 72,000 mL g–1 h–1) with over 90% toluene conversion in 10 min of light illumination (with a corresponding light-to-heat conversion temperature of ∼180 °C). Furthermore, the synchrotron radiation X-ray absorption spectroscopy, O2 temperature-programmed desorption, and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that cobalt defects are conducive to the formation of oxygen vacancies. Abstract:The CO oxidation catalytic activity of catalysts is strongly influenced by the oxygen vacancy defects (OVDs) concentration and the valence state of active metal. Herein, a defect engineering approach was implemented to enhance the oxygen vacancy defects and to modify the valence of metal ions in manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieves (OMS-2) by the introduction of copper (Cu). The characterization and theoretical calculation results reveal that the incorporation of Cu 2+ ion into the OMS-2 structure led to a rise in specific surface area and pore volume, weakening of Mn-O bonds, higher proportion of the low-coordinated oxygen species adsorbed in oxygen vacancies (O ads ) and an increase in the average oxidation state of manganese. These structural modifications were discovered to considerably reduce the apparent activation energy (Ea), thus ultimately significantly enhancing the CO oxidation activity (T 99 at 148 °Cat GHSV = 13,200 h −1 ) than the original OMS-2 (T 99 = 215 °C at GHSV = 13,200 h −1 ). Furthermore, In-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) and In-situ near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (in situ NAP-XPS) results indicate that the bimetallic synergy enhanced by doping strategy accelerates the conversion of oxygen to chemisorbed oxygen species and the reaction rate of CO oxidation through Mn 3+ +Cu 2+ ↔Mn 4+ +Cu + redox cycle. The findings of this study offer novel perspectives on the design of catalysts with exceptional performance in CO oxidation.

Abstract:We report a defect-engineered Co-based solid catalyst, namely the CO3O4 nanocubes (NCs)/graphitic C3N4(g-C3N4) hybrid, for enhancing the oxidation of magnesium sulfite (MgSO3) in the desulfurization of wet magnesia. Abundant oxygen vacancies were induced successfully on the CO3O4 NCs/g-C3N4 hybrid. The creation of oxygen vacancies promoted MgSO3 oxidation by enhancing the adsorption of reactant MgSO3 and accelerating the striping of product MgSO4 to refresh the Co active sites. The oxygen vacancies also promoted the transfer of oxygen molecules and subsequent activation of oxygen molecules to active oxygen species. The size effect of CO3O4 NCs, which may be a crucial factor for improving the catalytic activity, considerably enhanced the efficiency of Co species. Moreover, because the g-C3N4 support had a large surface area and large number of unpaired electrons, the coupling of CO3O4 NCs and g-C3N4 improved the dispersion of CO3O4 NCs, which substantially decreased the usage of Co species. During the MgSO3 oxidation reaction, the hybrid catalyst exhibited an unprecedented MgSO4 yield per Co site of 1678.9 mmol/mmol Co at 30 min and a rapid MgSO3 oxidation rate of 0.068 mmol.L (1).s (1). Abstract:The exact role of a defect structure on transition metal compounds for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which is a very dynamic process, remains unclear. Studying the structure-activity relationship of defective electrocatalysts under operando conditions is crucial for understanding their intrinsic reaction mechanism and dynamic behavior of defect sites. Co3O4 with rich oxygen vacancy (VO) has been reported to efficiently catalyze OER. Herein, we constructed pure spinel Co3O4 and VO-rich Co3O4 as catalyst models to study the defect mechanism and investigate the dynamic behavior of defect sites during the electrocatalytic OER process by various operando characterizations. Operando electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) implied that the VO could facilitate the pre-oxidation of the low-valence Co (Co2+, part of which was induced by the VO to balance the charge) at a relatively lower applied potential. This observation confirmed that the VO could initialize the surface reconstruction of VO-Co3O4 prior to the occurrence of the OER process. The quasi-operando X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and operando X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) results further demonstrated the oxygen vacancies were filled with OH• first for VO-Co3O4 and facilitated pre-oxidation of low-valence Co and promoted reconstruction/deprotonation of intermediate Co-OOH•. This work provides insight into the defect mechanism in Co3O4 for OER in a dynamic way by observing the surface dynamic evolution process of defective electrocatalysts and identifying the real active sites during the electrocatalysis process. The current finding would motivate the community to focus more on the dynamic behavior of defect electrocatalysts.
Defects‐Induced In‐Plane Heterophase in Cobalt Oxide Nanosheets for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Cobalt oxides as efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts have received much attention because of their rich reserves and cheap cost. There are two common cobalt oxides, Co3O4 (spinel phase, stable but poor intrinsic activity) and CoO (rocksalt phase, active but easily be oxidatized). Constructing Co3O4/CoO heterophase can inherit both characteristic features of each component and form a heterophase interface facilitating charge transfer, which is believed to be an effective strategy in designing excellent electrocatalysts. Herein, an atomic arrangement engineering strategy is applied to improve electrocatalytic activity of Co3O4 for the OER. With the presence of oxygen vacancies, cobalt atoms at tetrahedral sites in Co3O4 can more easily diffuse into interstitial octahedral sites to form CoO phase structure as revealed by periodic density functional theory computations. The Co3O4/CoO spinel/rocksalt heterophase can be in situ fabricated at the atomic scale in plane. The overpotential to reach 10 mA cm(-2) of Co3O4/CoO is 1.532 V, which is 92 mV smaller than that of Co3O4. Theoretical calculations confirm that the excellent electrochemical activity is corresponding to a decline in average p-state energy of adsorbed-O on the Co3O4/CoO heterophase interface. The reaction Gibbs energy barrier has been significantly decreased with the construction of the heterophase interface.
Engineering Defective Mnδ+-OV Active Structure in Α-Mno2 for Efficient Low-Temperature CO Oxidation

Abstract:The engineering defect such as oxygen vacancies over catalysts surface were essential for obtaining superior performance. Herein, two alpha-MnO2 (MnO2-D and MnO2-P) with different OV concentration were facilely fabricated through a morphology strategy to catalyze CO oxidation. Typically, the T90 value (-180 degrees C) of MnO2-D with more Ov concentration was significantly lower than that (-250 degrees C) of MnO2-P and this optimized sample also presented superior durability (stable at 180 degrees C for 100 h). Various surface and structural characterizations including XPS, EPR and TEM, demonstrated that MnO2-D possessed plentiful defective Mn delta+-OV active structures, which could serve as catalytically activated sites for oxygen molecular via a MvK mechanism. Additionally, the proportion of surface adsorbed oxygen over MnO2-D (27.6 %) was higher than that of MnO2-P (17.7 %) from O2-TPD results. DFT calculation results further indicated that a remarkably lower formation energy of OV was observed over MnO2-D (0.69 eV) than MnO2-P (1.59 eV), firmly favoring the oxygen activation. According to in situ DRIFTS results, the bidentate and tridentate carbonate pathways were mainly involved over MnO2-D during oxidation. This work provided a facilely constructed defective Mn delta+-OV active structures over MnO2-based catalysts.
Facile Construction and Enhanced Catalytic Activity of Co-Mn Oxide with Rich Amorphous/crystalline Interfaces for Propane Oxidation

Abstract:Cobalt-manganese (Co-Mn) composite oxides show high potential for the catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, the low defect content and poor oxygen mobility of perfect spinel structure crystalline always make it difficult to effectively activate C-H bonds of propane. Here, the catalyst with rich amorphous MnOx/crystalline Co3O4 interfaces was prepared, and the catalytic combustion activity for propane was determined. The rich amorphous/crystalline interfaces CMO-400 (i.e. Co-Mn oxide calcined at 400 degrees C) catalyst exhibited the best catalytic activity for propane with T90 of 200 degrees C among all bimetallic Co-Mn oxides. Various characterizations and corresponding results have demonstrated that the abundant amorphous/crystalline interfaces could improve the catalytic performances, attributed to high oxygen vacancy concentration, low temperature reducibility, weak Mn-O bond strength, and good surface lattice oxygen mobility. It is noteworthy that the interface engineering of amorphous/crystalline is an effective strategy in VOCs catalytic oxidation.
Less Is More: Selective-Atom-Removal-Derived Defective MnOx Catalyst for Efficient Propane Oxidation

Abstract:Defect manipulation in metal oxide is of great importance in boosting catalytic performance for propane oxidation. Herein, a selective atom removal strategy was developed to construct a defective manganese oxide catalyst, which involved the partial etching of a Mg dopant in MnOx. The resulting MgMnOx-H catalysts exhibited superior low-temperature catalytic activity (T50 = 185 °C, T90 = 226 °C) with a propane conversion rate of 0.29 μmol·gcat.-1·h-1 for the propane oxidation reaction, which is 4.8 times that of pristine MnOx. Meanwhile, a robust hydrothermal stability was guaranteed at 250 °C for 30 h of reaction time. The comprehensive experimental characterizations revealed that the catalytic performance improvement was closely related to the defective structures including the abundant (metal and oxygen) vacancies, distorted crystals, valence imbalance, etc., which prominently weakened the Mn-O bond and stimulated the mobility of surface lattice oxygen, leading to the elevation in the intrinsic oxidation activity. This work exemplifies the significance of defect engineering for the promotion of the oxidation ability of metal oxide, which will be valuable for the further development of efficient non-noble metal catalysts for propane oxidation.

Abstract:Developing oxygen vacancies in the structural network of nanomaterials is one of the productive methods to improve catalytic performance. A novel low-cost ternary iron-manganese-copper mixed oxide catalyst, rich in oxygen vacancies, was successfully synthesized through co-precipitation and pyrolysis. It exhibited excellent catalytic oxidation efficiency. For the first time, the metal valence transformation, the synergy structure of absorption atoms, and the role of oxygen vacancies in the as-prepared Fe 3 Mn 1 Cu 1 O x were examined using X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy (XANES), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. XANES/EXAFS characterization results unveil that pyrolysis temperature and metal doping effect induce the establishment of Fe 3 Mn 1 Cu 1 O x mixed network associated with abundant fractures, which maintain amorphous particles with plenty of oxygen vacancies and lattice oxygen. The Fe 3 Mn 1 Cu 1 O x mixed network catalyst attributed to the synergistic interaction of metal oxides matrix in generating Mn 4+ -O 2- -Fe 3+ -O 2- -Cu 2+ entities and led to excellent catalytic oxidation performance. Results confirmed that the structure of Fe 3 Mn 1 Cu 1 O x catalyst remained stable and active after oxidizing ethylene, depicting its super durability. Thus, a redox cycle of catalytic mechanism was proposed. This work provides new insights into constructing high-performance and stable catalysts with abundant oxygen vacancies of metal mixed oxides for VOCs elimination.

Abstract:Engineering the electronic structures of transition metal oxides via vacancy defects is an efficient approach to enhance their catalytic performances, while facilely creating vacancy defects and deeply exploring the effects still remain challenging. Herein, a facile reduction method was applied to introduce oxygen vacancy defects into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived cobalt oxide (Co3O4) polyhedron. Using zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) as Co source and self-sacrificial template, Co3O4 with polyhedron morphology and porous structure was synthesized, and then oxygen vacancy defects were introduced into the as-prepared Co3O4 through one-step NaBH4 reduction treatment. Strikingly, the obtained electrocatalyst (denoted as Co3O4-x) exhibited a larger current density (112.9 mA cm-2 vs. 1.75 V), a lower overpotential (335 mV at 10 mA cm-2) and a smaller Tafel slope (83 mV dec-1) than the Co3O4, which is even superior to the state-of-the-art IrO2 catalyst. Moreover, experiment results combined with density-functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the existence of oxygen vacancies could improve the conduc-tivity, promote the activation of H2O and reduce the potential of potential-limited step (PLS), thus greatly boosting electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performances. Abstract:Manganese oxides are prominent candidates for the catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or ambient decomposition of O3 individually. Here, we compared various preparation methods to create a defect-enriched Ag-MnOx nanocomposite that exhibits a remarkably multifunctional activity in VOC combustion and ozone decomposition. Ag+ ions were well-dispersed in the microtunnels of Ag-MnOx-H via hydrothermal replacement of the original K+ ions; this catalyst's benzene combustion efficiency (T90% = 216 °C at a space velocity of 90 000 mL h-1 g-1) was comparable to that of typical noble metal catalysts. Moreover, the decomposition of ozone over the Ag-MnOx-H catalyst (space velocity = 840 000 mL h-1 g-1) under a relative humidity of 60% was above 90%, indicating that it is a promising material for ozone elimination in practical application. The local structure results indicated that silver incorporation via the hydrothermal method facilitates the formation of nonstoichiometric defects in the MnOx matrix. The large number of active oxygen species related to O vacancies appeared to play critical roles in VOC combustion; moreover, the oxygen vacancies originating from O defects were also critical in O3 abatement. This work provides multifunctional catalysts for VOC combustion and ambient O3 decomposition and may assist with the rational design of MnOx catalysts for application in various conditions.
Promoting the activation of H 2 O via vacancy defects over metal-organic framework-derived cobalt oxide for enhanced oxygen evolution

Abstract:Engineering the electronic structures of transition metal oxides via vacancy defects is an efficient approach to enhance their catalytic performances, while facilely creating vacancy defects and deeply exploring the effects still remain challenging. Herein, a facile reduction method was applied to introduce oxygen vacancy defects into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived cobalt oxide (Co 3 O 4 ) polyhedron. Using zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) as Co source and self-sacrificial template, Co 3 O 4 with polyhedron morphology and porous structure was synthesized, and then oxygen vacancy defects were introduced into the as-prepared Co 3 O 4 through one-step NaBH 4 reduction treatment. Strikingly, the obtained electrocatalyst (denoted as Co 3 O 4-x ) exhibited a larger current density (112.9 mA cm −2 vs. 1.75 V), a lower overpotential (335 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ) and a smaller Tafel slope (83 mV dec −1 ) than the Co 3 O 4 , which is even superior to the state-of-the-art IrO 2 catalyst. Moreover, experiment results combined with density-functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the existence of oxygen vacancies could improve the conductivity, promote the activation of H 2 O and reduce the potential of potential-limited step (PLS), thus greatly boosting electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performances. This work reported a strategy for preparing defect-rich OER electrocatalysts, and also provided a deep understanding of the defect effects on catalytic performances.

Abstract:CoMnOx catalysts were prepared using a microwave (MW)/ultrasonic (US)-assisted method. Amorphous/crystalline regions in CoMnOx (MW = 250 W US = 300 W) increased the oxygen vacancy content and CoMnOx exhibited excellent activity for methane oxidation (T90 = 330 °C). A new approach is provided here to improve the activity of transition metal catalysts.
Tracking the Role of Defect Types in Co3O4 Structural Evolution and Active Motifs During Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Dynamic reconstruction of catalyst active sites is particularly important for metal oxide-catalyzed oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the mechanism of how vacancy-induced reconstruction aids OER remains ambiguous. Here, we use Co3O4 with Co or O vacancies to uncover the effects of different defects in the reconstruction process and the active motifs relevant to alkaline OER. Combining in situ characterization and theoretical calculations, we found that cobalt oxides are converted to an amorphous [Co(OH)(6)] intermediate state, and then the mismatched rates of *OH adsorption and deprotonation lead to irreversible catalyst reconstruction. The stronger *OH adsorption but weaker deprotonation induced by O defects provides the driving force for reconstruction, while Co defects favor dehydrogenation and reduce the reconstruction rate. Importantly, both O and Co defects trigger highly OER-active bridge Co sites in reconstructed catalysts, of which Co defects induce a short Co-Co distance (3.38 angstrom) under compressive lattice stress and show the best OER activity (eta(10) of 262 mV), superior to reconstructed oxygen-defected Co3O4-VO (eta(10) of 300 mV) and defect-free Co3O4 (eta(10) of 320 mV). This work highlights that engineering defect-dependent reconstruction may provide a rational route for electrocatalyst design in energy-related applications.

Abstract:Carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation performance heavily depends on the surface-active species and the oxygen vacancies of nanocomposites. Herein, the CuOx/Cu1.5Mn1.5O4 were fabricated via solid-state strategy. It is manifested that the construction of CuOx/Cu1.5Mn1.5O4 nanocomposite can produce abundant surface CuOx species and a number of oxygen vacancies, resulting in substantially enhanced CO oxidation activity. The CO is completely converted to carbon dioxide (CO2) at 75 °C when CuOx/Cu1.5Mn1.5O4 nanocomposites were involved, which is higher than individual CuOx, MnOx, and Cu1.5Mn1.5O4. Density function theory (DFT) calculations suggest that CO and O2 are adsorbed on CuOx/Cu1.5Mn1.5O4 surface with relatively optimal adsorption energy, which is more beneficial for CO oxidation activity. This work presents an effective way to prepare heterogeneous metal oxides with promising application in catalysis.
