Abstract:The enthusiasm for research on lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles is driven by both a fundamental interest in the optical properties of lanthanides embedded in different host lattices and their promise for broad applications ranging from biological imaging to photodynamic therapy. Despite the considerable progress made in the past decade, the field of upconversion nanoparticles has been hindered by significant experimental challenges associated with low upconversion conversion efficiencies. Recent experimental and theoretical studies on upconversion nanoparticles have, however, led to the development of several effective approaches to enhancing upconversion luminescence, which could have profound implications for a range of applications. Herein we present the underlying principles of controlling energy transfer through lanthanide doping, overview the major advances and key challenging issues in improving upconversion luminescence, and consider the likely directions of future research in the field.

Abstract:Optical tuning of lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles has attracted considerable attention over the past decade because this development allows the advance of new frontiers in energy conversion, materials science, and biological imaging. Here we present a rational approach to manipulating the spectral profile and lifetime of lanthanide emission in upconversion nanoparticles by tailoring their nonlinear optical properties. We demonstrate that the incorporation of energy distributors, such as surface defects or an extra amount of dopants, into a rare-earth-based host lattice alters the decay behavior of excited sensitizers, thus markedly improving the emitters' sensitivity to excitation power. This work provides insight into mechanistic understanding of upconversion phenomena in nanoparticles and also enables exciting new opportunities of using these nanomaterials for photonic applications.

Abstract:Probing the nature of nanocrystalline materials such as the surface state, crystal structure, morphology, composition, optical and magnetic characteristics is a crucial step in understanding their chemical and physical performance and in exploring their potential applications. Upconversion nanocrystals have recently attracted remarkable interest due to their unique nonlinear optical properties capable of converting incident near-infrared photons to visible and even ultraviolet emissions. These optical nanomaterials also hold great promise for a broad range of applications spanning from biolabeling to optoelectronic devices. In this review, we overview the instrumentation techniques commonly utilized for the characterization of upconversion nanocrystals. A considerable emphasis is placed on the analytical tools for probing the optical properties of the luminescent nanocrystals. The advantages and limitations of each analytical technique are compared in an effort to provide a general guideline, allowing optimal conditions to be employed for the characterization of such nanocrystals. Parallel efforts are devoted to new strategies that utilize a combination of advanced emerging tools to characterize such nanosized phosphors.

Abstract:Lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles capable of converting near-infrared excitation into UV and visible emissions have attracted considerable research interests in recent years. Low-density near-infrared light needed for excitation of these nanoparticles is nondestructive and highly penetrating, offering significant technological advantages for biological and photonic applications such as remote neuron modulation, super-resolution imaging, and short-wavelength lasing. In this review, we describe several emerging classes of upconversion nanoparticles that have been developed to promote these technological applications by providing boosted emission intensities. We explain how heavy doping, thermal stimulating, and hybridizing can be harnessed to maximize absorption of excitation light and minimize quenching processes in these nanomaterials.

Abstract:Rare earth ions doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) are capable of stepwisely converting two or more lower energy near-infrared (NIR) excitation photons into a higher energy visible and ultraviolet emission photon, resulting in a large anti-Stokes shift of several hundred nanometers. Because the f-electron configurations of lanthanide ions have abundant energy levels, and many of them possess long lifetimes, UCNPs exhibit unique optical properties including optical tunability over emission wavelengths and lifetimes, better photo-stability and improved monochromatic color-purity and spatial resolution. However, the low luminescent efficiency, largely owing to their substantially weak and narrow band absorptions, has greatly hampered the translation of UCNPs-based technologies from the academic stage to real world products. Recently, increasing efforts have been paid on boosting the upconversion luminescence brightness and efficiency, including inert shells coating, high concentration of activators doping, organic dyes modification, and so on. Many strategies even aimed to explore high quality UCNPs with some more unique optical properties, such as orthogonal emissions or encoding luminescent signals, and broaden their applications.

Abstract:Luminescence quench is common in overdoped upconversion nanoparticles. Various methods have been proposed to counteract the adverse effects of concentration quenching on luminescence, but in upconversion nanoparticles that are highly doped with both sensitizers and activators, the factors that contribute to the diminishing of the emission cannot be summarized by a single cause. Herein, a core-shell design is used to spatially separate the sensitizer (Yb 3+ ) and activator (Er 3+ ) and to modulate the emission by changes in the distribution position as well as the concentration of the dopant ions in order to probe the factors affecting the luminescence. When the sensitizer ions are located in the core, the luminescence intensity of the nanoparticles is significantly weaker than that of the other distribution, which implies that the effect of sensitizer and activator on luminescence in the highly doped state has a different and more complex mechanism. The intensity of the emission is more affected by Yb 3+ than Er 3+ , which includes not only the self-quenching of Yb 3+ , but also the dominance in the Yb 3+ –Er 3+ cross-relaxation. In this finding may provide new ideas for revealing the reasons for the diminished luminescence of highly doped upconversion nanoparticles and thus for enhancing luminescence.

Abstract:The lanthanide-doped up-conversion (UC) nanocrystals exhibit unique luminescence properties, such as the conversion of near-infrared long wavelength excitation into short visible wavelength emission. These UC nanoparticles symbolize a new class of phosphor materials. Recently, lanthanide-doped UC nanocrystals have been developed as a biological class for various applications including bio-imaging, drug delivery, and sensing which require low auto-fluorescence background, large anti-Stokes shifts, sharp emission bandwidths, high resistance to photo-bleaching, high penetration depth tissue, and high temporal resolution. Furthermore, these UC nanocrystals show promising poten-tial for improving the selectivity and sensitivity compared with those in common traditional methods. This review focuses on the fundamental mechanism of UC optical processes, synthetic methods with focus on the different techniques used, energy transfer mecha-nisms of lanthanide-doped UC nanocrystals, and in particular recent developments in biological applications, such as bio-imaging, drug delivery, fluorescence resonance energy transfer sensing, and heavy metal ion detections.

Abstract:Lanthanide doped nanoparticles (NPs) exhibit tunable X-ray-excited optical luminescence and X-ray-excited persistent luminescence (XEPL), holding broad prospects for applications in display/anti-counterfeiting and X-ray imaging. The development of effective strategies for multi-dimensional applications based on lanthanide-doped fluoride NPs are a constant challenge. Here, core-shell structured fluoride NPs, in which the heavy metal fluoride shell effectively suppresses the non-radiative relaxation and simultaneously improve the X-ray absorption of the shell are designed and fabricated. Under X-ray irradiation, the developed NPs exhibit an increased number of secondary electrons which migrate to Er3+ centers at the interface and greatly improve the XEPL intensity. Additionally, the introduction of Mn2+ further enhances the XEPL intensity and offers an effective route to control the red-green ratio of the upconversion spectrum. The NPs co-doped with Mn2+ exhibit a bright green XEPL under X-ray irradiation and a red emission under 1532 nm laser excitation. It is further validated that these NPs can be utilized for advanced anti-counterfeiting and high-resolution delayed imaging based on a film containing NPs as a scintillation screen. These findings suggest a new strategy of designing Er3+ doped NPs for multi-dimensional applications.

Abstract:With the rapid development of nanotechnology over the past decade, lanthanide doped upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) have been successfully synthesized and have emerged as an important class of nanomaterials. In contrast to the traditional Yb3+-sensitized UCNPs, the emerging Nd3+-sensitized UCNPs have many merits in controlling the excitation of upconverting luminescence, including minimizing overheating effect, increasing the imaging depth and so on. In this review paper, we provide a comprehensive survey of the most recent advances in developing Nd3+-sensitized UCNPs, which include nanocomposition, mechanisms, and some typical nanostructures of Nd3+-sensitized UCNPs. Furthermore, an important emphasis is placed on various applications including downconversion and upconversion photoluminescence for bioimaging, high-resolution, and deep tissue imaging and tumor diagnosis and therapy. Abstract:Over the past decade, high-quality lanthanide doped upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) have been successfully synthesized with the rapid development of nanotechnology. Due to the unique electron configuration of lanthanide ions, there are rich energy level structures in the near-infrared, visible and ultraviolet spectral range. However, for UCNPs, only a limited number of efficient upconversion excitation and emission have been generated due to the limited number of sensitizer (Yb3+) and activator (Tm3+, Er3+, and Ho3+) ions, and the application is mainly focused on the bio-imaging by using the upconversion luminescence of UCNPs. Recently, more and more researchers have started to focus on tuning of upconversion optical properties and developing of multi-functional UCNPs by using the combination of sub-lattice mediated energy migration, core@shell structural engineering and UCNPs based nanocomposites which greatly expands the range of applications for lanthanide-doped UCNPs. Therefore, a "nanolab" can be created on UCNPs, where the property modulation can be realized via the designed host-dopants combinations, core@shell nanostructure, energy exchange with "alien species" (organic dyes, quantum dots, etc.), and so on. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey of the latest advances made in developing lanthanide-doped UCNPs, which include excitation and emission energy levels guided designing of the UCNP nanostructure, the synthesis techniques to fabricate the nanostructure with optimum energy level structure and optical properties, the fabrication of UCNPs-based nanocomposites to extend the applications by introducing the additional functional components, or integrating the functional moiety into one nanocomposite.

Abstract:Rare-earth doped upconversion luminescence is important for display and imaging field due to its narrow band, multicolor, long lifetime and high stability. However, low quantum yield of upconversion energy transfer, weak excited states absorption and slow spontaneous radiation rates lead to weak upconversion luminescence, which may dramatically limit the practical application of upconversion nanoparticles. Here, we report a metal-sheet-shaped plasmonic nanocavity consisting of gold and silver micro-sheets. It is found that the upconversion processes (including quantum yield of energy transfer, excited states absorption and spontaneous radiation rates) were enhanced by strong local electromagnetic field of the plasmonic nanocavity when RE3+ nanoparticles were filled in the plasmonic nanocavity. The significant enhancement of the luminescence and clear directional radiation were observed under 980 nm laser excitation. By adjusting the nanogap distance of the plasmonic nanocavity, we achieved a 75-fold enhancement in 654 nm emission. Benefiting from the plasmonic nanocavity, the upconversion luminescence exhibited a directional emission, which indicates the plasmonic near-field excitation contributed to the luminescence enhancement. These findings provide a candidate for ring light source and bio-imaging application.

Abstract:Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) doped with lanthanide ions that possess ladder-like energy levels can give out multiple emissions at specific ultra-violet or visible wavelengths irrespective of excitation light. However, precisely controlling energy migration processes between different energy levels of the same lanthanide ion to generate switchable emissions remains elusive. Herein, a novel dumbbell-shaped UCNP is reported with upconverted red emission switched to green emission when excitation wavelength changed from 980 to 808 nm. The sensitizer Yb ions are doped with activator Er ions and energy modulator Mn ions in NaYF4 core nanocrystal coated with an inner NaYF4 :Yb shell to generate red emission after harvesting 980 nm excitation light, while an outer NaNdF4 :Yb shell is coated to form a dumbbell shape to generate green emission upon 808 nm excitation. Such specially designed UCNPs with switchable green and red emissions are further explored for imaging of latent fingerprint and detection of explosive residues in the fingerprint simultaneously. This work suggests a novel research interest in fine-tuning of upconversion emissions through precisely controlling energy migration processes of the same lanthanide activator ion. Furthermore, use of these nanoparticles in other applications such as simultaneous dual-color imaging or orthogonal bidirectional photoactivation can be explored.

Abstract:Achieving efficient photon upconversion under low irradiance is not only a fundamental challenge but also central to numerous advanced applications spanning from photovoltaics to biophotonics. However, to date, almost all approaches for upconversion luminescence intensification require stringent controls over numerous factors such as composition and size of nanophosphors. Here, we report the utilization of dielectric microbeads to significantly enhance the photon upconversion processes in lanthanide-doped nanocrystals. By modulating the wavefront of both excitation and emission fields through dielectric superlensing effects, luminescence amplification up to 5 orders of magnitude can be achieved. This design delineates a general strategy to converge a low-power incident light beam into a photonic hotspot of high field intensity, while simultaneously enabling collimation of highly divergent emission for far-field accumulation. The dielectric superlensing-mediated strategy may provide a major step forward in facilitating photon upconversion processes toward practical applications in the fields of photobiology, energy conversion, and optogenetics.

Abstract:Photon upconversion is promising for applications such as biological imaging, data storage or solar cells. Here, we have investigated upconversion processes in a broad range of gadolinium-based nanoparticles of varying composition. We show that by rational design of a core–shell structure with a set of lanthanide ions incorporated into separated layers at precisely defined concentrations, efficient upconversion emission can be realized through gadolinium sublattice-mediated energy migration for a wide range of lanthanide activators without long-lived intermediary energy states. Furthermore, the use of the core–shell structure allows the elimination of deleterious cross-relaxation. This effect enables fine-tuning of upconversion emission through trapping of the migrating energy by the activators. Indeed, the findings described here suggest a general approach to constructing a new class of luminescent materials with tunable upconversion emissions by controlled manipulation of energy transfer within a nanoscopic region.
