Abstract:Objective : A visual analysis of the literature in the field of dental adhesives is conducted in order to explore the current state of research, cutting-edge areas of interest, and future development trends in this domain. Methods: English literature related to dental adhesives published between 2000 and 2023 was searched in the Web of Science Core Collection database. The retrieved results were then imported into VOSviewer and CiteSpace software in plain text format. Various data, such as journal names, authors, institutions, countries, and keywords, were extracted for further bibliometric analysis. Results : A total of 19,403 publications were retrieved, featuring 42,365 authors, 7,359 institutions, 121 countries, and 1,523 journals. The annual publication and cumulative publication rates in this field are both on the rise. Among them, DENTAL MATERIALS is the journal with the highest publication rate, cumulative publication rate, and number of citations. Ozcan M is the author with the most publications and within the limitations of this study, is considered an influential author in the field (with the highest intermediary centrality score) and Meerbeek B is the author with the highest number of citations. UNIV SAO PAULO is the institution with the highest publication rate. The United States is the country with the highest publication rate and has the most collaborative partnerships with other countries. Collaboration between different authors, institutions, and countries in this field is indeed close, which has greatly contributed to the rapid development of dental adhesives. Current research focuses on various aspects such as the types of dental adhesives, adhesive strength, dental diseases, and clinical trials. Future research directions mainly concentrate on aspects such as nanoparticles, 3D printing, universal adhesives, antibacterial properties of adhesives, and adhesive strength. Conclusion: Within the defined scope of this study, we have conducted a quantitative and objective analysis of the current research status and emerging trends in dental adhesives. This analysis establishes a knowledge foundation and introduces novel perspectives for future in-depth investigations in this field.

Contemporary research trends on nanoparticles in endodontics: a bibliometric and scientometric analysis of the top 100 most-cited articles

Abstract:Objectives: Advancements in nanotechnology have led to the widespread usage of nanoparticles in the endodontic field. This bibliometric study aimed to determine and analyze the top 100 most-cited articles about nanoparticles in endodontics from 2000 to 2022.Materials and Methods: A detailed electronic search was conducted on the "Clarivate Analytics Web of Science, All Databases" to receive the most-cited articles related to the topic. Articles were ranked in descending order based on their citation counts, and the first 100 were selected for bibliometric analysis. Parameters such as citation density, publication year, journal, country, institution, author, study design, study field, evidence level, and keywords were analyzed.Results: The top 100 most-cited articles received 4,698 citations (16-271) with 970.21 (1.91-181) citation density in total. Among decades, citations were significantly higher in 2011-2022 (p < 0.001). Journal of Endodontics had the largest number of publications. Canada and the University of Toronto made the highest contribution as country and institution, respectively. Anil Kishen was the 1 who participated in the largest number of articles. The majority of the articles were designed in vitro. The main study field was "antibacterial effect." Among keywords, "nanoparticles" followed by "Enterococcus faecalis" were used more frequently.Conclusions: Developments in nanotechnology had an impact on the increasing number of studies in recent years. This bibliometric study provides a comprehensive view of nanoparticle advances and trends using citation analysis.

Abstract:Introduction Altmetrics is a new and emerging scholarly tool that measures online attention surrounding journal articles. Altmetric data resources include: policy documents, news outlets, blogs, online reference managers (eg Mendeley and CiteULike), post-publication peer-review forums (eg PubPeer and Publons), social media (eg Twitter, Facebook, Weibo, Google(+), Pinterest, Reddit), Wikipedia, sites running Stack Exchange (Q&A), and reviews on F1000 and YouTube.Methods To identify the top 50 dental articles in 2014, PubMed was searched using the following query "("2014/1/1"[PDAT]:"2014/12/31"[PDAT]) and jsubsetd[text]" in December, 2015. Consequently, all PubMed records were extracted and sent to Altmetric LLP (London, UK) as a CSV file for examination. Data were analysed by Microsoft Office Excel 2010 using descriptive statistics and charts.Results Using PubMed searches,15,132 dental articles were found in 2014. The mean Altmetric score of 50 top dental articles in 2014 was 69.5 ± 73.3 (95% CI: -74.14 to 213.14). The British Dental Journal (48%) and Journal of Dental Research (16%) had the maximum number of top articles. Twitter (67.13%), Mendeley (15.89%) and news outlets (10.92%) were the most popular altmetric data resources.Discussion Altmetrics are intended to supplement bibliometrics, not replace them. Altmetrics is a fresh and emerging arena for the dental research community. We believe that dental clinical practitioners, research scientists, research directors and journal editors must pay more attention to altmetrics as a new and rapid tool to measure the social impact of scholarly articles.
Research interest on dental sealant in dentistry based on the 100 most cited articles: bibliometric analysis

Abstract:The aim of this study was to identify and analyze the characteristics of the 100 most cited articles about dental sealants (DS) in dentistry. In September 2023, a search was performed in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoS-CC) database. The following information was extracted from each article: number and density of citations, year of publication, authorship, journal, impact factor, keywords, study design, theme, continent, country, and institution. The citations of the WoS-CC were compared with those of the Scopus and Google Scholar databases. The VOSviewer software was used to generate collaborative networks. The number of citations ranged from 33 to 205. The articles were published between 1961 and 2016. Buonocore MG (7%) was the most prominent author among the most cited. The Journal of the American Dental Association was the most frequent journal (25%) and Journal of Dental Research (7.6) had the highest impact factor. Most studies had interventional (41%) and laboratory (31%) designs, mainly addressing DS effectiveness in the prevention and control of dental caries (86%). There was a predominance of publications from North America (46%) and the USA was the country with the highest number of articles (44%). The most frequent institutions were the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (USA) and the University of Rochester (USA) (6% each). "Retention" was the most frequent keyword. In conclusion, the 100 most cited articles were mostly interventional and laboratory studies, addressing the retention and efficacy of DS. Most of the articles were concentrated in North America and Europe, demonstrating a little collaboration from other continents.

Abstract:ObjectivesTo identify the 100 most cited articles published in dental journals.Materials and methodsA search was performed on the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Web of Science for the most cited articles in all the journals included in the Journal Citation Report (2010 edition) in the category of “Dentistry, Oral Surgery, and Medicine”. Each one of the 77 journals selected was analyzed using the Cited Reference Search tool of the ISI Web of Science database to identify the most cited articles up to June 2012. The following information was gathered from each article: names and number of authors, journal, year of publication, type of study, methodological design, and area of research.ResultsThe number of citations of the 100 selected articles varied from 326 to 2050. All articles were published in 21 of the 77 journals in the category. The journals with the largest number of the cited articles were the Journal of Clinical Periodontology (20 articles), the Journal of Periodontology (18 articles), and the Journal of Dental Research (16 articles). There was a predominance of clinical research (66 %) over basic research (34 %). The most frequently named author was Socransky SS, with 9 of the top 100 articles, followed by Lindhe J with 7. The decades with most articles published of the 100 selected were 1980–1989 (26 articles) and 1990–1999 (25 articles). The most common type of article was the case series (22 %), followed by the narrative review/expert opinion (19 %). The most common area of study was periodontology (43 % of articles).ConclusionsTo our knowledge, this is the first report of the top-cited articles in Dentistry. There is a predominance of clinical studies, particularly case series and narrative reviews/expert opinions, despite their low-evidence level. The focus of the articles has mainly been on periodontology and implantology, and the majority has been published in the highest impact factor dental journals.Clinical significanceThe number of citations that an article receives does not necessarily reflect the quality of the research, but the present study gives some clues to the topics and authors contributing to major advances in Dentistry.

A bibliometric analysis of the top 100 most-cited papers concerning dental fluorosis

Abstract:A high number of citations can indicate the potential of any specific paper to influence other research and generate changes in clinical practice. Analyzing the most-cited papers in a certain scientific field may assist researchers to identify the influential papers as well their main characteristics. The present study aimed to analyze the 100 most-cited papers concerning dental fluorosis (DF) through a bibliometric review. A search was performed in the Web of Science Core Collection database (WoS-CC) in November 2021. The papers were displayed in descending order according to the number of citations in WoS-CC. Two independent researchers performed the selection. Scopus and Google Scholar were used to compare the number of citations with WoS-CC. The following data were extracted from the papers: title, authors, number and density of citations, institution, country, continent, year of publication, journal title, keywords, study design, and theme. Collaborative networks were generated using the VOSviewer software. The top 100 most-cited papers were published between 1974 and 2014 and were cited 6,717 times (ranging from 35 to 417). Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology (24%), Journal of Dental Research (21%), Journal of Public Health Dentistry (17%), and Caries Research (13%) published the most papers. Observational studies (60%) and literature reviews (19%) were the most common study designs. The main topics were epidemiology (44%) and fluoride intake (32%). The countries with the highest number of papers were the United States of America (USA) (44%), Canada (10%), and Brazil (9%). The University of Iowa (USA) had the most papers (12%). Levy SM was the author with the highest number of papers (12%). The 100 most-cited papers on DF were mainly observational studies focused on epidemiology and originated in North America. There were few interventional studies and systematic reviews among the most-cited papers concerning this topic.

Abstract:Selvaraj, Madhanraj ; Nivethitha, Bhaskar ; Varshitha, Piramanayagam ; Sangeetha, Ulaganathan ; Madhan, Balasubramanian ; Objective: This bibliometric study aimed to analyze the citation metrics, journal and author characteristics, and subject domains of the 100 top-cited Systematic Reviews (SR) and Meta-Analysis (MA) in orthodontics. Material and Methods: An electronic database search was conducted for SR and MA in the Web of Science on 16th July 2023, without language and time restrictions. Of the 802 hits returned, the 100 top-cited orthodontic articles were shortlisted. They were analyzed for citation metrics, journal characteristics (journal, year of publication, impact factor-IF), author and affiliation characteristics (number, primary and corresponding author's affiliation, and country), study domain, and keywords. Results: These articles were published from 1996 to 2021 in 20 journals, with an impact factor of 1.9 to 10.5, by 351 researchers affiliated with 104 universities. Their citations ranged from 45 to 344, and 34 poised to be classified as classic (≥ 100 citations). The maximum number of articles was published in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (n=38), the European Journal of Orthodontics (n=18), and the Angle Orthodontist (n=8). The authors for individual papers ranged from 1 to 10, with 5 being the most common (n=58). Europe had the highest contribution regarding the number of corresponding authors, institutions, and citations. Bone anchorage and orthodontic tooth movement/Biomechanics were the most frequently researched domains (n=11 each). The most common keyword used was Orthodontics (n=19), followed by Systematic Review (n=16) and Meta-analysis (n=9). Conclusion: In general, the top cited SR and MA were published in high-impact orthodontic journals, were multi-authored, and reflected the collaborative work from different universities.

Global trend and hotspot of resin materials for dental caries repair: a bibliometric analysis

Abstract:Objective The objective of this study is to explore the current research status, key areas, and future development trends in the field of resin materials for dental caries repair through an objective and quantitative analysis of the literature. Methods A search was conducted on the Web of Science Core Collection using “dental cavity” and “resin” as keywords, covering the period from 2000 to 2023. Data including author names, journals, countries, institutions, keywords, and citation rates were extracted. The collected data was subjected to statistical analysis using bibliometrics methodology, and visual knowledge maps were generated using software like CiteSpace 6.2.R4, Microsoft365, and R. Results A total of 4800 articles were retrieved, involving 13,423 authors, 2654 institutions, 76 countries, and 560 journals. The number of publications and cumulative publications in this field showed an increasing trend, reaching a peak in 2022. Dental Materials was the journal with the highest number of publications, cumulative publications, and citation rates. XU HHK was the most prolific author in terms of publications and citations. The University of Maryland was the institution with the highest number of publications. Brazil was the country with the highest number of publications. The USA had the highest level of collaboration with other countries. Collaboration between different authors, institutions, and countries in this field was relatively close, which contributed to the rapid development of resin materials for caries repair. The current research focus is mainly on the nature of dental caries, characteristics of resin materials, and bonding strength of adhesives. Enhancing the bioactivity and remineralization of resin materials, advanced antibacterial strategies, longevity and durability of resin restorations, nanotechnology, and material innovation, as well as digital dentistry, will receive increased attention as future research trends. Conclusion Resin materials for dental caries repair have received significant attention. Future research should combine nanotechnology and big data analysis to investigate the mechanisms of dental caries occurrence and development, enhance the performance and longevity of resin materials, and conduct high-quality, large-scale empirical research.

Abstract:Background: Scientific production has increased in the last decades, consequently the number of systematic reviews, reviews and meta-analyses, the objective is to carry out a bibliometric analysis study of systematic reviews and meta-analyses in dentistry, divided into different thematic areas. Material and methods: A search was conducted in the Science Citation Index-Expanded on the core collection of Web of Science, they were selected from the area of Dentistry and Oral Surgery and Medicine categories, the data was downloaded on April 20, 2022 and The 100 most cited articles from each of the thematic areas were selected. Results: An increase in this type of articles was observed in the last decade in the areas of pediatric and medical dentistry and oral pathology. The thematic area that received the most citations was periodontics. The two authors with the most citations are Zwahlen, Marcel and Pjetursson, Bjarni Eluar. The countries that receive the most citations are European, along with the USA and China. The topics that are most published in this type of article deal with Cancer with 50 publications, caries treatment with 25 and fluoridation with 1. The entities that finance this type of articles the most are private companies (26.76%). Conclusions: Together with an exponential increase in the number of publications in dentistry, there has been an increase in the number of publications in systematic reviews. The areas publishing the most articles and having the most citations are Periodontics and Implantology, despite the fact that the most studied topic is cancer. The 50 most cited articles on soft tissue integration of dental implants: A bibliometric analysis

Abstract:Statement of problem: Soft tissue integration helps prevent the bacterial invasion of dental implants, but bibliometric studies on the top 50 most cited articles in the field of soft tissue integration are lacking. Purpose: The purpose of this bibliometric study was to analyze the 50 most cited articles since 1999 to explore global trends and research hotspots. Material and methods: A specific search strategy of the Science Citation Index Expanded (Web of Science) was devised, and relevant article-based, journal-based, and author-based parameters were analyzed. Correlation analysis was performed (α=.05). Results: The number of citations ranged from 71 to 586. Clinical Oral Implants Research was the most cited journal (1722 citations). Berglundh, Tord was the author with the most publications (6 publications) and citations (957 citations). Dental implants and titanium were the keywords with the highest frequency. Switzerland was the country with the highest number of publications (12 publications). Correlation was found between the publication year and average annual citations (P<.001). Conclusions: This study determined the scientific progress in soft tissue integration. The surface design of dental implant materials is essential for the soft tissue integration of dental implants. Soft tissue integration has been a focus of interest in the past few years, but many experiments still need to be done to improve soft tissue compatibility with innovative materials.
The cutting-edge roles of lasers in endodontics: A bibliometric and scientometric analysis of the 100 most-cited articles

Abstract:Purpose: This bibliometric and scientometric analysis aimed to delve into the forefront roles of lasers in endodontics from 1990 to 2024. Methods: A comprehensive electronic search was conducted using "Clarivate Analytics Web of Science, All Databases" to retrieve the most-cited articles pertaining to the topic. These articles were then ranked in descending order according to their citation counts and the top 100 were selected for further analysis. Parameters including citation density, publication year, journal, journal impact factor (IF), country, institution, author, study design, study field, evidence level, laser type, and keywords were meticulously analyzed. Results: The mean and standard deviations of total citation and citation density were 106.47 ± 65.76 and 7.61 ± 5.13, respectively. Positive and negative correlations were found between the number of citations and citation density and age of publication. While the mean number of citations was significantly higher in the period 2001–2010 compared to the other periods ( P < 0.05), values were similar between the periods 1990–2000 and 2011–2014 ( P > 0.05). Articles were mainly published in the Journal of Endodontics . The most productive country, institutions, and author were the United States, the University of Showa, and Koukichi Matsumoto. Diode and Er: YAG lasers were commonly investigated. Ex vivo studies were mainly performed followed by in vitro ones. The main study field was "antimicrobial effect". Among keywords, "photodynamic therapy" was used more frequently. Conclusion: Lasers are predominantly utilized to leverage their antimicrobial efficacy. Advancements in technology will lead to improvements in the properties of lasers, thereby enhancing the disinfection of the root canal system.

Bibliometric Analysis of 100 Most Cited Articles in Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Region on Implant Prosthodontics

Abstract:Aim: This study aims to conduct a comprehensive analysis and scientometric evaluation of the top 100 most cited publications in the field of implant prosthodontics, authored by individuals affiliated with nations of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Materials and methods: In October 2023, the 100 most cited articles were gathered from the Web of Science database using the bibliometric research technique. The analysis was conducted on bibliometric indicators, including the distribution of articles over time, authorship, design of study, field of study, nature of research, contribution from various countries in MENA, international research collaboration, and most frequently used keywords by authors. Chi-square and one-way analysis of variance were used for statistical analysis. VOSviewer software was used to analyze the bibliometric network for co-occurrence among countries, coauthors, and common keywords. Results: The results revealed that the top 100 most cited articles from MENA countries on the topic of implant prosthodontics, published between 1995 and 2020, had received an average of 73.31 citations each. About one-third of the papers were published in the top 4 journals. The journal with the most published articles was Clinical Oral Implant Research, followed by the International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants, the International Journal of Prosthodontics, and the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Saudi Arabia had the distinction of producing the greatest number of highly cited papers. The co-occurrence network analysis using VOSviewer software identified 10-15 related clusters. Research studies with multiple authors received significantly more citations (P < 0.05). Significant relationships were observed between the number of citations and journal type (open access vs. non-open access; P < 0.05), and also articles published in dental journals received the most citations and were statistically significant (P = 0.001). Conclusion: Over the last decade, there has been a significant surge in research related to implant prosthodontics. Among the countries in the MENA region, Saudi Arabia has distinguished itself by leading in terms of overall research output. This resource would benefit academicians, clinicians, and researchers in prosthodontics, oral surgery, and periodontic specialties of dentistry.
Top 100 most-cited papers on diabetes mellitus in Dentistry: a bibliometric study

Abstract:This study assessed the features of the 100 most-cited papers on diabetes mellitus (DM) in dentistry using bibliometric measures. A search of the most cited papers on DM using journals included in the category "Dentistry, Oral Surgery and Medicine" in the Web of Science database up to January 2023 was performed. The complete bibliographic records of the selected papers were exported in plain text or Research Information Systems (RIS) file format. The following bibliometric indicators were collected: title, year, authors, number of citations, mean number of citations, institution, country, continent, study design, journal, impact factor, and keywords. Graphical bibliometric networks were created using the VOSviewer software. The number of citations for the 100 most-cited papers in DM research ranged from 111 to 566. Six papers each had more than 400 citations. Most were observational studies (n = 50) from the United States (USA) (n = 23) and were published in the Journal of Periodontology (30%; n=30). Robert Genco was the most cited author and contributed the most to the top 100 articles (3,653 citations; n = 13). The VOSviewer map of co-authorship showed the existence of clusters in research collaboration. The most prolific institutions were the Universities of Buffalo and Michigan (n = 6 each). "Diabetes mellitus" was the most frequent keyword, with 31 occurrences. In conclusion, the most cited studies that investigated the relationship between dentistry and DM were in periodontology. Observational studies, primarily from the USA, have been the most cited thus far.
Top cited articles in Oral Radiology: A bibliometric network analysis

Abstract:Background: The present study aimed to identify and analyze the 100 top-cited articles published in oral radiology. Material and methods: Web of Science was used to conduct a comprehensive search from inception until 22 November 2023 in dental radiology. Basic information of the 100 top-cited articles was recorded. Biblioshiny and VOSviewer tools were employed for conducting thematic map and author keyword, title, and abstract terms analysis to elucidate the research trends and hotspots. Elsevier Scopus database was also used for citation comparisons. Results: The citation count for the 101 most-cited articles ranged from 105-587. Most of them were original research studies with observational design conducted in diagnosis, dose, geometric measurements, and image analysis topics. Cone beam computed tomography was the most studied radiologic technique as author keyword co-occurrence analysis revealed and appeared as a basic theme for the transdisciplinary research field's development. While making infant steps, artificial intelligence was adequately represented in top cited list, as it received increasing citation numbers in very few years, concentrating the highest citation densities. Conclusions: Bibliometric analysis of the most affecting publications in oral radiology depicts the science's evolution and enhances the understanding of scientific research progress. Finite element analysis in the Dental Sciences: A Bibliometric and a Visual Study

Abstract:Introduction and aims: Finite element analysis (FEA) is an incrementally practical and precise tool for the prediction of stress effects on different tissue structures and has therefore interested dental researchers for decades. This bibliometric and visualized study was aimed to assess the research progress related to FEA in the dental sciences in terms of research trends and frontiers. Methods: The articles about FEA studies in this field during 1999 to 2024 were obtained from Web of Science Core Collection. Then, these results were analysed and plotted using Microsoft Excel, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace in order to find out the historical evolution, current hotspots, and future directions. Results: Total 2838 literature records related to the topic were retrieved from Web of Science Core Collection. The most active country and institution were USA (538 documents) and Universidade Estadual Paulista (140 documents), respectively. Baggi et al from University of Naples Federico II was the author with the most highly cited article (352 citations), which was published on the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry in 2008. Dental Materials ranked first (231 documents) among the 10 journals with the greatest numbers of relevant publications. The top three trending keywords were 'dental implant', 'stress distribution', and 'fracture'. The endocrown, clear aligner, and posterior edentulism were scientific frontiers in this field. Conclusion: The present study provides a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of research in the dental science by FEA approaches, which will identify active hotspots of scientific interest to guide further research endeavours.
A Bibliometric Analysis of the 100 Most-Cited Articles concerning Atraumatic Restorative Treatment

Abstract:Introduction: The present study aimed to identify the 100 most-cited articles concerning Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) through a bibliometric analysis. Methods: The search was conducted in the Web of Science database in December 2023. Scopus and Google Scholar were used to compare the number of citations. The following data were extracted from the articles: title, authors, number of citations, access type, institution, country, continent, year of publication, journal, keywords, study design, and theme. Collaborative networks were generated using the VOSviewer software. Google Trends was used to investigate the global popularity of "atraumatic restorative treatment" research. Results: The 100 selected articles, published between 1996 and 2019, were cited 5,092 times, ranging from 21 to 239 citations. Caries Research (12%) and Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology (12%) published the highest number of articles. Clinical study (52%) was the most prevalent study design. The main theme addressed was restoration longevity (43%). Conventional high-viscosity glass ionomer was the most used restorative material (69%). The country with the highest number of articles was the Netherlands (33%) and Europe was the continent with most publications (38%). The Rabboud University of Nijmegen had the highest number of articles (25%). Frencken JE was the most prominent author (38%). The most common keyword was "atraumatic restorative treatment" (n=60). According to Google Trends, Tanzania was the country that searched the most about ART. Conclusion: The 100 most cited articles on ART were mainly composed of clinical studies focusing on the longevity of restorations and originated in Europe.
Top 100 Cited Publications in the Field of Temporomandibular Disorders: A Bibliometric Analysis

Abstract:Background The aim of this bibliometric research was to identify and analyze the top 100 cited publications in the field of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in order to guide any professional level with interest in this topic by mapping the current trends in the field of TMD. Materials and Methods The Clarivate Analytics' Web of Science database was used to find the top 100 most cited papers in the field of TMD, published from the year 2000 to November 18, 2021, with MeSH terms in the search strategy. Data extracted were ranking, title, main author, institution, publication year, a total of citations, citation average per year, the journal the study was published, journal impact factor, and the number of studies that each journal published. Further, also the percentage of the different study designs, the number of studies regarding a specific area within the field of TMD, and the number of studies per country were also calculated. A ranking of authors was also performed. Results The top cited paper was a study on diagnostic criteria for TMD, with 1,287 citations published in 2014 in the Journal of Oral and Facial Pain and Headache which also had most of the top 100 cited publications. Eighty-one percent of the most cited studies were from the USA and Europe and 33% of the included studies were review articles. Conclusion Taken together, since all papers were considered classic, one can draw the conclusion that researchers in 2000 onward in the field of TMD are interested in (a) diagnostic criteria, (b) TMD symptoms and mainly pain-related symptoms, (c) etiology and risk factors of TMD and mainly bruxism, and (d) treatment of TMD. However, topics such as imaging, occlusion, tissue engineering, and disk displacements are presently not as popular.
Highly cited papers in dental medicine based on essential science indicators

Abstract:Introduction/Objective. Essential Science Indicators (ESI) Highly Cited Papers (HCPs) refer to the most influential scientific articles and breakthrough research within a research field in the past decade. This study aimed to identify the characteristics of ESI HCPs in the subject category Dentistry, Oral Surgery and Medicine, to recognize authors, institutions and countries of origin, and determine research trends that attracted the most scientific interest in dentistry. Methods. A descriptive analysis of bibliographic data, network extraction and visualization were completed. Furthermore, analyzed ESI HCPs were classified according to a field of interest, main research domain, type of study, and level of evidence. Results. The set of 185 dental HCPs was published in 42 journals from 2010 to 2020, with an average number of 211.7 citations per paper. Nearly half of HCPs were issued by the Journal of Dental Research, Dental Materials, and Journal of Clinical Periodontology. There were 765 authors affiliated with 351 institutions from 42 countries. The most productive institutions were the University of Hong Kong, the University of Michigan, and the University of Bern. The United States of America contributed with the highest number of publications, followed by China, and the United Kingdom. Dental materials, dental implantology, periodontology, and oral and maxillofacial surgery represented areas of significant interest within this subject category. The highest proportion of HCPs were narrative and systematic reviews, expert opinions, consensus reports, and in vitro ?r lab studies. Conclusion. Results obtained from this study can provide valuable information for researchers to better identify present and future hotspots in dental research.

A bibliometric analysis of scientific literature in digital dentistry from low- and lower-middle income countries

Abstract:Objective: Bibliometric analysis and citation counts help to acknowledge influence of publications. The aim of this study was to conduct bibliometric and citation analysis of top-cited articles, from low- and lower-middle income countries, on use and application of digital technology in dentistry. Methodology: A search strategy based on "Digital Dentistry", "Low Income Countries", and "Lower-Middle Income Countries" was used in October 2023 using Scopus database to retrieve articles relevant to digital dentistry, with citation count of 10 or more. From 44 included articles, bibliometric information was analyzed on SPSS version 23. Network analysis based on co-citations, keywords, and number of citations was conducted on VOS software (version 1.6.20). Results: Most relevant articles were published in 2021 (n = 8), with 52.3% original articles, out of which 40.9% were in vitro studies. India had the highest number of articles (n = 24), with most publications in The Journal of Indian Prosthodontic Society (n = 4), and in the domain of General Dentistry (n = 15, 34.1%). Co-authorship network analysis was not significant, but country-wise co-authorship analysis revealed India with the greatest link strength (4.0). Highest occurring keyword was 3D printing (link strength 5.0), and the citation analysis revealed Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry with the most number of published documents (3), having a citation count of 275. Bibliographic coupling for sources revealed Journal of Indian Prosthodontic Society to have the highest link strength of 15.33. Conclusion: This analysis uncovers interesting bibliometric and citation based information including key thematic trends, emphasizing crucial role of technologies like 3D printing, CAD/CAM, and CBCT in digital dentistry. The study underscores the imperative for increased original research efforts in low- and lower middle-income countries.
Developmental Defects of Enamel: A Bibliometric Analysis of the Top 100 Most-Cited Papers

Abstract:Background: Developmental defects of enamel (DDE) are a result of disturbances during formation and maturation of the enamel. Evaluating the most-cited DDE papers can provide important tools that point to the gaps and strengths of this important topic in dentistry. Summary: This bibliometric study analyzed the 100 most-cited papers on DDE. Using a combined keyword search strategy, the 100 most-cited papers were selected in the Web of Science Core Collection. Papers that addressed any type of DDE were included. The extracted data were title, number of citations, study theme, authorship, journal, type of DDE, type of dentition (primary or permanent), type of diagnosis, study design, year, and country of publication. The bibliometric networks were generated through VOSviewer software. The 100 papers had a range from 78 to 459 citations. The main themes of studies were etiopathogenesis (53%), prevalence and incidence (22%), and diagnosis (8%). The authors with the highest number of citations were Goodman AH and Rose JC (459 citations). Most articles were published in dental journals (47%). The most studied types of DDE were fluorosis and amelogenesis imperfecta in the permanent dentition (47%). Observational (24%) and non-systematic reviews (24%) were the most common study designs and ranged from 1977 to 2019. The country with the highest number of publications was the USA (41%). Key messages: Most of the top 100 DDE papers were about fluorosis and amelogenesis imperfecta, with top papers from three continents with English as the native language. This topic is of great importance in dentistry, and the need for further studies is highlighted, especially regarding the diagnosis and treatment of some DDEs.
