Abstract:In these lectures, we present the behavior of conventional $\bar{q}q$ mesons, glueballs, and hybrids in the large-$N_{c}$ limit of QCD. To this end, we use an approach based on rather simple NJL-like bound-state equations. The obtained large-$N_{c}$ scaling laws are general and coincide with the known results. A series of consequences, such as the narrowness of certain mesons and the smallness of some interaction types, the behavior of chiral and dilaton models at large-$N_{c},$ and the relation to the compositeness condition and the standard derivation of large-$N_{c}$ results, are explained. The bound-state formalism shows also that mesonic molecular and dynamically generated states do not form in the large-$N_{c}$ limit. The same fate seems to apply also for tetraquark states, but here further studies are needed. Next, following the same approach, baryons are studied as bound states of a generalized diquark ($N_{c}-1$ antisymmetric object) and a quark. Similarities and differences with regular mesons are discussed. All the standard scaling laws for baryons and their interaction with mesons are correctly reproduced. The behavior of chiral models involving baryons and describing chirally invariant mass generation is investigated. Finally, properties of QCD in the medium at large-$N_{c}$ are studied: the deconfinement phase transition is investigated along the temperature and the chemical potential directions, respectively. Within the QCD phase diagrams, the features of different models at large-$N_{c}$ are reviewed and the location of the critical endpoint is discussed. In the end, the very existence of nuclei and the implications of large-$N_{c}$ arguments for neutron stars are outlined.

Abstract:A self-consistent holographic QCD model is proposed which can realize both chiral symmetry breaking and confinement, two most important phenomena of QCD. It is pointed out that the model can accommodate both Regge spectra of hadrons and the linear potential between quarks. The model is formulated in the framework of graviton-dilaton-scalar system, where the dilaton field is dual to the dimension-2 gluon condensate and can lead to the linear confinement, while the scalar field corresponds to the quark anti-quark condensate and can explain the property of chiral dynamics.

Abstract:Holographic QCD is an extra-dimensional approach to modeling hadrons, the bound states of the strong interactions. In holographic models, the extra spatial dimension creates a waveguide for fields, and the discrete towers of modes propagating in that waveguide are interpreted as hadronic resonances. These models are motivated by the AdS/CFT correspondence, which is a duality that relates theories in different numbers of spatial dimensions. Holographic models have the potential to provide a better understanding of strongly interacting systems of quarks and gluons, as well as unconventional superconductors and other nonperturbative systems.

Symmetries, Universes and Phases of QCD$_2$ with an Adjoint Dirac Fermion

Abstract:We study 2d $SU(N)$ QCD with an adjoint Dirac fermion. Assuming that the IR limit of the massless theory is captured by a WZW coset CFT, we show that this CFT can be decomposed into a sum of distinct CFTs, each representing a superselection sector (universe) of the gauge theory corresponding to different flux tube sectors. The CFTs describing each universe are related by non-invertible topological lines that exhibit a mixed anomaly with the $\mathbb{Z}^{(1)}_N$ 1-form symmetry. These symmetries exist along the entire RG flow thereby implying deconfinement of the massless theory. We begin by outlining the general features of the model for arbitrary $N$ and then provide a detailed analysis for $N=2$ and $N=3$. In these specific cases, we explicitly determine the IR partition function, identify the symmetries, and explore relevant deformations. Based on these findings and in alignment with various previous studies, we propose a phase diagram for the massive $SU(2)$ gauge theory and calculate its confining string tension.

Abstract:We present a simple holographic QCD model that provides a unified description of vector mesons and nucleons in a confining background based on Einstein-dilaton gravity. For the confining background, we consider analytical solutions of the Einstein-dilaton equations where the dilaton is a quadratic function of the radial coordinate far from the boundary. We build actions for the 5D gauge field and the 5D Dirac field dual to the 4D flavor current and the 4D nucleon interpolator, respectively. In order to obtain asymptotically linear Regge trajectories, we impose for each sector the condition that the effective Schrödinger equation has a potential that grows quadratically in the radial coordinate far from the boundary. For the vector mesons, we show that this condition is automatically satisfied by a 5D Yang-Mills action minimally coupled to the metric and the dilaton. For the nucleons, we find that the mass term of the 5D Dirac action needs to be generalized to include couplings to the metric and the dilaton. Using Sturm-Liouville theory, we obtain a spectral decomposition for the hadronic correlators consistent with large Nc QCD. Our setup contains only three parameters: the mass scale associated with confinement, the 5D gauge coupling, and the 5D Dirac coupling. The last two are completely fixed by matching the correlators at high energies to perturbative QCD. We calculate masses and decay constants and compare our results against available experimental data. Large $N_c$ QCD phase diagram at $μ_B = 0$

Abstract:Lattice studies suggest that at zero baryon chemical potential and increasing temperature there are three characteristic regimes in QCD that are connected by smooth analytical crossovers: a hadron gas regime at T < T_ch ~ 155 MeV, an intermediate regime, called stringy fluid, at T_ch < T < ~ 3 T_ch, and a quark-gluon plasma regime at higher temperatures. These regimes have been interpreted to reflect different approximate symmetries and effective degrees of freedom. In the hadron gas the effective degrees of freedom are hadrons and the approximate chiral symmetry of QCD is spontaneously broken. The intermediate regime has been interpreted as lacking spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking along with the emergence of new approximate symmetry, chiral spin symmetry, that is not a symmetry of the Dirac Lagrangian, but is a symmetry of the confining part of the QCD Lagrangian. While the high temperature regime is the usual quark-gluon plasma which is often considered to reflect "deconfinement" in some way. This paper explores the behavior of these regimes of QCD as the number of colors in the theory, N_c, gets large. In the large N_c limit the theory is center-symmetric and notions of confinement and deconfinement are unambiguous. The energy density is O(N_c^0) in the meson gas, O(N_c^1) in the intermediate regime and O(N_c^2) in the quark-gluon plasma regime. In the large N_c limit these regimes may become distinct phases separated by first order phase transitions. The intermediate phase has the peculiar feature that glueballs should exist and have properties that are unchanged from what is seen in the vacuum (up to 1/N_c corrections), while the ordinary dilute gas of mesons with broken chiral symmetry disappears and approximate chiral spin symmetry should emerge.

Dynamical Holographic QCD Model: Resembling Renormalization Group from Ultraviolet to Infrared

Abstract:Resembling the renormalization group from ultraviolet (UV) to infrared (IR), we construct a dynamical holographic model in the graviton-dilaton-scalar framework, where the dilaton background field $$\varPhi $$ and scalar field X are responsible for the gluodynamics and chiral dynamics, respectively. At the UV boundary, the dilaton field is dual to the dimension-4 gluon operator, and the scalar field is dual to the dimension-3 quark-antiquark operator. The metric structure at IR is automatically deformed by the nonperturbative gluon condensation and chiral condensation in the vacuum. The produced scalar glueball spectra in the graviton-dilaton framework agree well with lattice data, and the light-flavor meson spectra generated in the graviton-dilaton-scalar framework are in good agreement with experimental data. Both the chiral symmetry breaking and linear confinement are realized in this dynamical holographic QCD model.

Abstract:We study a model comprising $N$ flavors of Kähler Dirac fermion propagating on a triangulated two dimensional disk which is constrained to have a negative average bulk curvature. Dirichlet boundary conditions are chosen for the fermions. Quantum fluctuations of the geometry are included by summing over all possible triangulations consistent with these constraints. We show in the limit $N\to \infty$ that the partition function is dominated by a regular triangulation of two dimensional hyperbolic space. We use strong coupling expansions and Monte Carlo simulation to show that in this limit boundary correlators of the fermions have a power law dependence on boundary separation as one expects from holography. However we argue that this behavior breaks down for any finite number of massive fields in the thermodynamic limit and quantum fluctuations of the bulk geometry drive the theory into a non-holographic phase. In contrast, for massless fermions we find evidence that the boundary is conformal even for finite $N$. This is consistent with theoretical results in quantum Liouville theory.

Abstract:We study Quantum Chromodynamics in the chiral large $N_c$ limit which contains a left-handed Weyl fermion in the fundamental representation, a left-handed Weyl fermion in the two index antisymmetric representation and $(N_c-3)$ left-handed Weyl fermions in the antifundamental representation of the $SU(N_c)$ gauge group. We construct gauge singlet composite operators and study their masses and correlation functions at large $N_c$.

Abstract:A bstract The scaling dimensions of charged operators in conformal field theory have recently been predicted to exhibit universal behavior in the large charge limit. We verify this behavior in the 2+1 dimensional C P N − 1 model. Specifically, we numerically compute the scaling dimensions of the lowest dimension monopole operators with charges Q = 1 , 2 , · · · , 100 to subleading order in large N . The coefficients of the large Q expansion are extracted through a fit, and the predicted universal $ \mathcal{O}\left({Q}^0\right) $ contribution is verified to the subpercent level.

Holography of broken U(1) symmetry

Abstract:We examine the Abelian Higgs model in ( d + 1)-dimensional anti-de Sitter space with an ultraviolet brane. The gauge symmetry is broken by a bulk Higgs vacuum expectation value triggered on the brane. We propose two separate Goldstone boson equivalence theorems for the boundary and bulk degrees of freedom. We compute the holographic self-energy of the gauge field and show that its spectrum is either a continuum, gapped continuum, or a discretuum as a function of the Higgs bulk mass. When the Higgs has no bulk mass, the AdS isometries are unbroken. We find in that case that the dual CFT has a non-conserved U(1) current whose anomalous dimension is proportional to the square of the Higgs vacuum expectation value. When the Higgs background weakly breaks the AdS isometries, we present an adapted WKB method to solve the gauge field equations. We show that the U(1) current dimension runs logarithmically with the energy scale in accordance with a nearly-marginal U(1)-breaking deformation of the CFT.

Confront Holographic QCD with Regge Trajectories of vectors and axial-vectors

Abstract:We derive the general 5-dimension metric structure of the $Dp-Dq$ system in type II superstring theory, and demonstrate the physical meaning of the parameters characterizing the 5-dimension metric structure of the \textit{holographic} QCD model by relating them to the parameters describing Regge trajectories. By matching the spectra of vector mesons $\rho_1$ with deformed $Dp-Dq$ soft-wall model, we find that the spectra of vector mesons $\rho_1$ can be described very well in the soft-wall $D3-Dq$ model, i.e, $AdS_5$ soft-wall model. We then investigate how well the $AdS_5$ soft-wall model can describe the Regge trajectory of axial-vector mesons $a_1$. We find that the constant component of the 5-dimension mass square of axial-vector mesons plays an efficient role to realize the chiral symmetry breaking in the vacuum, and a small negative $z^4$ correction in the 5-dimension mass square is helpful to realize the chiral symmetry restoration in high excitation states.

A dynamical holographic QCD model for spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and confinement

Abstract:In this paper, we present a holographic realization of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and confinement. The latter is realized by building a solution of 5d Einstein-dilaton gravity leading to a confining quark antiquark potential. The 4d currents and the quark mass operator associated with chiral symmetry breaking and creation of meson states are mapped to 5d fields whose dynamics is given by a non-Abelian Higgs action. We introduce a non-minimal dilaton coupling to the tachyon potential which has two parameters, one of them controlling the presence or absence of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and the other controlling the sign of the chiral condensate as the quark mass grows. We calculate the masses of vector, scalar, axial-vector and pseudoscalar mesons, focusing on the effect of chiral symmetry breaking on the spectrum. In the chiral limit we identify the emergence of a massless state in the pseudoscalar meson spectrum, i.e., the pion. We calculate all meson decay constants and confirm that the pion satisfies the Gell-Mann-Oakes relation in the light quark regime.

Correlations between the deconfining and chiral transitions in holographic QCD

Abstract:We consider an improved soft-wall AdS/QCD model coupled to an Einstein-dilaton system, which offers a way to study the deconfining and chiral transitions simultaneously. The correlation between these two transitions has been investigated in detail in the Einstein-dilaton-scalar system with the bulk scalar field representing the vacuum of matters in the flavor sector of the model. We find that the effects of the scaling dimension Δ of the dual operator of the dilaton manifest in chiral transitions, although the equations of state can all be matched with the two-flavor lattice results for Δ=2.5,3,3.5 in the decoupling case of β=0. In the weak-coupling case with smaller β, both the equation of state and the chiral transition exhibit a crossover behavior and turn into first-order phase transitions with the increase of β.

Abstract:We employ the functional integral formalism to study quantum chromodynamics (QCD) with Nf quarks of zero bare mass. In addition to local SU(Nc) colour symmetry, this theory possesses exact global G = UdNf)@UR(Nf) chiral symmetry. We obtain an exact bilocal Bose field representation of the generating functional which, as we prove after establishing the manner in which the bilocal fields transform under G, preserves the global chiral symmetry. We demonstrate how a local Bose field representation of the generating functional may be obtained from the bilocal bosonisation. This provides a direct link between QCD and low energy meson phenomenological models. We utilise the bilocal bosonisation in the study of the dynamical breakdown of the global chiral symmetry group G. We derive the vacuum field equation from the exact bilocal Bose field effective action and discuss two alternative solutions: one corresponding to a Wigner-Weyl realisation of the global symmetry group G in which the vacuum configuration is invariant under G; the other to a mixed realisation in which the vacuum manifold is the coset space G/H = U A(Nf ), where H = Uv(Nf ) is a subgroup of G.
On the holographic dual of N=1 SQCD with massive flavors

Abstract:We construct holographic duals to N=1 SQCD with a quartic superpotential and unquenched massive flavors. Our backgrounds are generated by D5-branes wrapping two-dimensional submanifolds of an internal space. The flavor degrees of freedom are introduced by means of D5-branes extended along two-dimensional calibrated surfaces, and act as sources of the different supergravity fields. The backgrounds we get include the backreaction of the flavor branes and generalize the geometries obtained so far to the case in which the fundamental matter is massive. The supergravity solutions we find are regular everywhere and depend on a radial function which can be determined from the distribution of flavor branes used as sources. We also work out the holomorphic structure of the model and explore some of its observable consequences.

Mass hierarchies in gauge theory with two index symmetric representation matter

Abstract:In gauge theories, the running of the anomalous dimension of a fermion bilinear operator is believed to lead to chiral symmetry breaking when gamma=1. Naively using perturbative results to judge when gamma=1 leads to the possibility of large dynamically generated mass hierarchies in models with both two index symmetric representation and fundamental representation fermions. In this paper we study a holographic model of this physics to predict the separation in scales in the meson spectrum. We study SU(Nc) theories at different Nc with one flavour of two index symmetric representation as a function of the number of fundamental fermion flavours NfF. The largest hierarchy we find is for Nc=7 and NfF=22 where the rho mesons made of the two different representations are separated in scale by a factor of 13. For general Nc the hierarchy can be made greater than 7 by tuning NfF. We display the hierarchy as a function of NfF and investigate the quark mass dependence. These predictions do depend on the extrapolation of gamma from the perturbative regime - even in a pessimistic scenario a distinct gap can be achieved.

Abstract:In gauge theories in the limit of a large number Nc of colors, baryons are usually described as heavy solitonic objects with mass of order Nc. We discuss an alternative large Nc description both directly in the field theory as well as using holography. In this alternative large Nc limit at least some of the baryons behave like mesons, that is they stay light even at large Nc and their interactions vanish in that limit. For Nc=3 these alternative large Nc baryons are equivalent to the standard baryons. In the holographic description it is manifest that the Regge slopes of mesons and alternative baryons are degenerate.
