Abstract:When micro-bearings are operated at high temperatures or high rotation speeds such that gas rarefaction occurs, the conventional Reynolds model is not accurate enough to predict bearing behavior and performance. In this paper, the molecular gas lubrication (MGL) model is proposed and applied to investigate the nonlinear static and dynamic behavior of gas-lubricated three-lobe non-circular micro-bearings at high operating temperatures and/or high rotational speeds. At high temperatures, in addition to rarefaction of the gas, the viscosity and friction of the gas also change, and subsequently slippage occurs at the flow boundaries. Also, high rotation speed changes the bearing number and as a result affects the equation governing pressure and flow, and besides that, the inverse Knudsen number also changes and gas rarefaction occurs. The nonlinear equation governing the gas behavior is discretized using the finite element method. The effects of temperature rise and rotation speed on the pressure, micro bearing load carrying capacity, angle of attitude, eccentricity ratio, and frictional power loss are investigated and studied. The gas equation obtained from the MGL model is simultaneously solved with the dynamic equations governing the rotor motion using the fourth-order Runge–Kutta method. Center orbit diagrams, phase portraits, Poincare maps, power spectra and bifurcation diagrams are obtained and interpreted to investigate the dynamic behavior of gas-lubricated three-lobe non-circular micro-bearings. The results show that high temperature and/or high rotation speed and subsequent gas rarefaction have significant effects on the nonlinear steady state and dynamic behavior of the micro gas bearings. As the gas temperature increases, both gas viscosity increases and gas rarefaction occurs. Although the effect of increasing gas viscosity is more dominant than the effect of rarefaction, in any case, if the effect of gas rarefaction is not taken into account, the pressure values inside the micro-bearing are calculated higher than the actual values and cause errors in the estimation of the dynamic behavior of the micro-bearings. When the behavior of the rotor is periodic, considering the effect of gas rarefaction, the horizontal displacement of the rotor center increases by 10–30% and its vertical displacement increases by 1–9%. This amount of error in calculating the displacement of the rotor center in the design process of rotating machines such as micro motors can have significant effects on the resulting performance.
