Abstract:Polar dielectrics are important optical materials enabling the subwavelength manipulation of light in infrared due to their capability to excite phonon polaritons.In practice,it is highly desired to actively modify these hyperbolic phonon polaritons（HPPs） to optimize or tune the response of the device.In this work,we investigate the plasmonic material,a monolayer graphene,and study its hybrid structure with three kinds of hyperbolic thin films grown on SiO 2 substrate.The inter-mode hybridization and their tunability have been thoroughly clarified from both the band dispersions and the mode patterns numerically calculated through a transfer matrix method.Our results show that these hybrid multilayer structures are of strong potentials for applications in plasmonic waveguides,modulators and detectors in infrared.

Abstract:In this theoretical work, we report on voltage-controllable hybridization of electromagnetic modes arising from strong interaction between graphene surface plasmons and molecular vibrations. The interaction strength depends strongly on the volume density of molecular dipoles, the molecular relaxation time, and the molecular layer thickness. Graphene offers much tighter plasmonic field confinement and longer carrier relaxation time compared to noble metals, leading to Rabi splitting and hybridized polaritonic modes at three-orders-of-magnitude lower molecular densities. Electrostatically tunable carrier density in graphene allows for dynamic control over the interaction strength. In addition, the flat dispersion band above the light line arising from the deep confinement of the polaritonic modes gives rise to the omnidirectional excitation. Our approach is promising for practical implementations in infrared sensing and detection.

Abstract:We demonstrate a dynamic surface plasmonic modulation based on graphene-nanowire (grapheme-NW) hybrid structures in the visible light range. A static modulation depth of as high as 0.07 dB/μm has been achieved experimentally. Through careful simulation and systematical experimental investigation, we found that the dual-confinement effect of charge density and electromagnetic energy around the vicinity of the NW will dramatically enhance the light-matter interaction and increase the Fermi level shifting, which are the key roles for bringing the optical response of the device to the visible range. The carrier concentration near the vicinity of a Ag NW is estimated to reach 0.921×10(14) cm(-2) after applying more than 25 V voltages, which is enough to shift the Fermi level for visible light. Furthermore, the modulation behaviors near the Dirac point of monolayer graphene and the singularity of gap-induced bilayer graphene are investigated. Calculated optical conductivity as a function of Fermi level predicts a minimum value near the Dirac point, which is consistent with the experimental results.
Synthesis of Highly Confined Surface Plasmon Modes with Doped Graphene Sheets in the Mid-Infrared and Terahertz Frequencies

Abstract:We investigate through analytic calculations the surface plasmon dispersion relation for monolayer graphene sheets and a separated parallel pair of graphene monolayers. An approximate form for the dispersion relation for the monolayer case was derived, which was shown to be highly accurate and offers intuition to the properties of the supported plasmon mode. For parallel graphene pairs separated by small gaps, the dispersion relation of the surface plasmon splits into two branches, one with a symmetric and the other with an antisymmetric magnetic field across the gap. For the symmetric (magnetic field) branch, the confinement may be improved at reduced absorption loss over a wide spectrum, unlike conventional SP modes supported on metallic surfaces that are subjected to the trade-off between loss and confinement. This symmetric mode becomes strongly suppressed for very small separations however. On the other hand, its antisymmetric counterpart exhibits reduced absorption loss for very small separations or long wavelengths, serving as a complement to the symmetric branch. Our results suggest that graphene plasmon structures could be promising for waveguiding and sensing applications in the mid-infrared and terahertz frequencies.
An All-Optical Modulation Method in Sub-Micron Scale.

Abstract:We report a theoretical study showing that by utilizing the illumination of an external laser, the Surface Plasmon Polaritons (SPP) signals on the graphene sheet can be modulated in the sub-micron scale. The SPP wave can propagate along the graphene in the middle infrared range when the graphene is properly doped. Graphene's carrier density can be modified by a visible laser when the graphene sheet is exfoliated on the hydrophilic SiO2/Si substrate, which yields an all-optical way to control the graphene's doping level. Consequently, the external laser beam can control the propagation of the graphene SPP between the ON and OFF status. This all-optical modulation effect is still obvious when the spot size of the external laser is reduced to 400 nm while the modulation depth is as high as 114.7 dB/μm.

Abstract:The electric and optical performance of different surface plasmon polariton (SPP) electric modulation structures have been investigated by comparing the response speed and modulation figures of merit (FoM). To overcome the capacitance limitation and improve the response speed, we proposed a novel silver-graphene-dielectric-graphene-semiconductor vertical structure. Semiconductor nano-waveguide is introduced to help reduce ohmic loss in silver waveguide and reflect the leaked optical field back, enhancing the modulation depth. Through optimization, a device with estimated modulation FoM of more than 70% and hundreds of GHz response speed and 3 dB bandwidth is designed, which may bring great improvement to previous optical modulators. Abstract:We present the application of graphene as a plasmon sensor. It was found that the electronic transport of chemical vapor deposition CVD-synthesized graphene is sensitive to surface plasmons generated by the illumination of metal nanoparticles. The observed change in electronic conduction can be up to seven times larger than the intrinsic photoresponse of graphene. A study of the mechanism revealed local field-assisted oxygen desorption induced by surface plasmons to be the cause of this intriguing behavior. A detailed investigation of the wavelength and spacing dependence of the plasmon-graphene coupling proves that graphene can be used as a sensitive, high resolution electronic plasmon detector. This finding shows the potential of devices exploiting the novel properties of graphene and surface plasmons.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), which are electromagnetic modes representing collective oscillations of charge density coupled with photons, have been extensively studied in graphene. This has provided a solid foundation for understanding SPPs in 2D materials. However, the emergence of wafer-transfer techniques has led to the creation of various quasi-2D van der Waals heterostructures, highlighting certain gaps in our understanding of their optical properties in relation to SPPs. To address this, we analyzed electromagnetic modes in graphene/hexagonal-boron-nitride/graphene heterostructures on a dielectric Al 2 O 3 substrate using the full ab initio RPA optical conductivity tensor. Our theoretical model was validated through comparison with recent experiments measuring evanescent in-phase Dirac and out-of-phase acoustic SPP branches. Furthermore, we investigate how the number of plasmon branches and their dispersion are sensitive to variables such as layer count and charge doping. Notably, we demonstrate that patterning of the topmost graphene into nanoribbons provides efficient Umklapp scattering of the bottommost Dirac plasmon polariton (DP) into the radiative region, resulting in the conversion of the DP into a robust infrared-active plasmon. Additionally, we show that the optical activity of the DP and its hybridization with inherent plasmon resonances in graphene nanoribbons are highly sensitive to the doping of both the topmost and bottommost graphene layers. By elucidating these optical characteristics, we aspire to catalyze further advancements and create new opportunities for innovative applications in photonics and optoelectronic integration.

Abstract:Graphene plasmons are rapidly emerging as a viable tool for fast electrical manipulation of light. The prospects for applications to electro-optical modulation, optical sensing, quantum plasmonics, light harvesting, spectral photometry, and tunable lighting at the nanoscale are further stimulated by the relatively low level of losses and high degree of spatial confinement that characterize these excitations compared with conventional plasmonic materials, alongside the large nonlinear response of graphene. We start with a general description of the plasmonic behavior of extended graphene, followed by analytical methods that lead to reasonably accurate estimates of both the plasmon energies and the strengths of coupling to external light in graphene nanostructures, including graphene ribbons. Although graphene plasmons have so far been observed at mid-infrared and longer wavelengths, there are several possible strategies to extend them toward the visible and near-infrared, including a reduction in the size of the graphene structures and an increase in the level of doping. Specifically, we discuss plasmons in narrow ribbons and molecular-size graphene structures. We further formulate prescriptions based on geometry to increase the level of electrostatic doping without causing electrical breakdown. Results are also presented for plasmons in highly-doped single-wall carbon nanotubes, which exhibit similar characteristics as narrow ribbons and show a relatively small dependence on the chirality of the tubes. We further discuss perfect light absorption by a single-atom carbon layer, which we illustrate by investigating arrays of ribbons using fully analytical expressions. Finally, we explore the possibility of exploiting optically pumped transient plasmons in graphene, whereby the optically heated graphene valence band can sustain collective plasmon oscillations similar to those of highly doped graphene, and well-defined during the picosecond time window over which the electron is at an elevated temperature. In brief, we discuss a number of exciting possibilities to extend graphene plasmons toward the visible and near-infrared spectral regions and toward the ultrafast time domain, thus configuring a vast range of possibilities for fundamental studies and technological applications.

Abstract:Owing to its excellent electrical, mechanical, thermal and optical properties, graphene has attracted great interests since it was successfully exfoliated in 2004. Its two dimensional nature and superior properties meet the need of surface plasmons and greatly enrich the field of plasmonics. Recent progress and applications of graphene plasmonics will be reviewed, including the theoretical mechanisms, experimental observations, and meaningful applications. With relatively low loss, high confinement, flexible feature, and good tunability, graphene can be a promising plasmonic material alternative to the noble metals. Optics transformation, plasmonic metamaterials, light harvesting etc. are realized in graphene based devices, which are useful for applications in electronics, optics, energy storage, THz technology and so on. Moreover, the fine biocompatibility of graphene makes it a very well candidate for applications in biotechnology and medical science.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the epsilon-near-zero (ENZ)/surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) modes based on graphene-black phosphorus heterostructure. In the proposed hybrid graphene-black phosphorus structure, ENZ mode of black phosphorus and GSP can be simultaneously stimulated and take into effect. The enhanced optical field confinement induced by ENZ mode of black phosphorus and extended propagation distance induced by the surface plasmon polariton mode of graphene can be both obtained within the proposed graphene-black phosphorus heterostructure. The simulation results show that the figure of merit of the hybridized structure outperforms that of graphene or black phosphorus-based structures. It also reveals that the doping density of black phosphorus and the chemical potential of graphene would both contribute to the results of optical field confinement and propagation distance, and may lead to the tunable optimized working wavelength in the mid-infrared range (MIR). Our work may extend to design the opto-electro devices based on the hybridized 2D materials in the future nanophotonics.

Abstract:Plasmonics has established itself as a branch of physics which promises to revolutionize data processing, improve photovoltaics, increase sensitivity of bio-detection. A widespread use of plasmonic devices is notably hindered (in addition to high losses) by the absence of stable and inexpensive metal films suitable for plasmonic applications. This may seem surprising given the number of metal compounds to choose from. Unfortunately, most of them either exhibit a strong damping of surface plasmons or easily oxidize and corrode. To this end, there has been continuous search for alternative plasmonic materials that are, unlike gold, the current metal of choice in plasmonics, compatible with complementary metal oxide semiconductor technology. Here we show that copper and silver protected by graphene are viable candidates. Copper films covered with one to a few graphene layers show excellent plasmonics characteristics surpassing those of gold films. They can be used to fabricate plasmonic devices and survive for at least a year, even in wet and corroding conditions. As a proof of concept, we use the graphene-protected copper to demonstrate dielectric loaded plasmonic waveguides and test sensitivity of surface plasmon resonances. Our results are likely to initiate a wide use of graphene-protected plasmonics.

Abstract:Inspired by the recent development of graphene, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel metasurface, namely, spoof surface plasmonic graphene, for controlling the transports and emissions of electromagnetic waves. Similar to graphene, at the corners of the Brillouin zone for our designed metasurface, two bands of spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) linearly touch together, forming Dirac-like cones. In the experiments, we directly observed the Dirac cones in the momentum space by using near-field scanning. When the frequency is changed from the lower cone to the Dirac point and to the upper cone, the corresponding SSPPs' transport on the metasurface shows negative group velocities, pseudodiffusion characteristics, and positive group velocities, respectively. The emission of the SSPPs to the air shows a transition of the wavefront from a concave to flat and finally to convex. The metasurface proposed here may find many potential applications in directional antennas, waveguide, diffusion-like transport, focusing and imaging devices, and integrated spoof plasmonic circuits.

Abstract:The manipulation of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) propagation is a basic subject for the realization of novel optical devices. Although the unidirectional SPP launcher has been demonstrated, it has been difficult to realize active control suitable for device applications. Here, we propose a graphene device with electrically controllable propagation of SPPs. The source/drain electrode of this device is made of a reflective antenna pair structure, with its optical resonance controlled by the corresponding applied voltage. With appropriate source and drain bias, this device can serve as a good unidirectional SPP launcher, with a high extinction ratio over 2000 and generation efficiency of 0.38. The electrical control allows us to tune the propagation of SPPs with significant flexibility, which may be used for future novel plasmonic devices and photonic circuits.

Abstract:Surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs)-based waveguides, especially hybrid plasmonic nanowires, which have attracted extensive interests due to easy fabrication, high transmittance, subwavelength mode confinement and long propagation distance, are appropriate platforms for enhancing the interaction with graphene. Considering that graphene is a two-dimensional (2D) material with surface conductivity, it is important to enhance the in-plane electrical components parallel to graphene. Here, we propose a tunable graphene optical modulator based on arrayed hybrid plasmonic nanowires, utilizing strong subwavelength confinement of gap-surface plasmonic modes (GSPMs) and near-field coupling in the periodic metasurface structure to enhance effective light-matter interactions. The modulator has a typical modulation depth (MD) of 4.7 dB/mu m, insertion loss (IL) of 0.045 dB/mu m, and a broadband response. The modulation performance can be further optimized, achieving MD of 16.7 dB/mu m and IL of 0.17 dB/mu m. Moreover, with the optimized modulator, the 3 dB bandwidth can reach 200 GHz. The energy consumption of modulator is about 0.86 fJ/bit. Our design exhibits fascinating modulation performance, fabrication compatibility and integration potential. It may inspire the schematic designs of graphene-based plasmonic modulator and pave a way to the application of 2D materials-involved optoelectronic devices. Abstract:Graphene has emerged as an outstanding material for optoelectronic applications due to its high electronic mobility and unique doping capabilities. Here we demonstrate electrical tunability and hybridization of plasmons in graphene nanodisks and nanorings down to 3.7 μm light wavelength. By electrically doping patterned graphene arrays with an applied gate voltage, we observe radical changes in the plasmon energy and strength, in excellent quantitative agreement with rigorous analytical theory. We further show evidence of an unexpected increase in plasmon lifetime with growing energy. Plasmon hybridization and electrical doping in nanorings of suitably chosen nanoscale dimensions are key elements for bringing the optical response of graphene closer to the near-infrared, where it can provide a robust, integrable platform for light modulation, switching, and sensing.
