Abstract:The modern Arabic-speaking Middle East is incomprehensible without taking into account the central importance of mass media. Existing literature on media in the Arab Middle East tends to clump (with some important exceptions) at either end of a historical spectrum: analyses of the adoption of the printing press in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and scholarship on “new” (primarily digital) media as they have unfolded over the past two decades. Much work on contemporary “new media” suffers from an implicit technological determinism. Historical literature is generally more sound, but not necessarily well focused on media as a phenomenon that deserves analysis in its own right. I argue that “new media,” stripped of its technological determinism, is a useful concept. A history of new media over the past hundred and fifty years or so will make media an object of study on par with “economy” or “society,” or “culture.” One would not want to fall into the trap of assuming the existence of such an object as a given. There is, however, a great deal to be gained from understanding the media system historically as it emerges and takes on the status of a socially constructed reality in the Arabic-speaking world.

Abstract:Over recent years, Arabic popular culture has become a focal point of West Asian and North African studies. Most of the new research dealing with it concentrates on the ‘popular’ as opposed to an intellectual ‘high’ culture far from the harsh and hierarchically organized reality many Arabic-speaking societies face today. Popular cultural practices are thus seen as a rejection of the elite and a stance against those who have ‘something to loose’ within paralyzed and conservative communities. Albeit not denying the subversive political potential associated with these practices, this volume intends to take a more nuanced and broader perspective. Arabic popular culture might engage with emancipatory claims, but it might as easily follow the capitalist rulebook of global marketing. It might fight against oppressive authorities, yet it can equally become their symbol. Approaches to Arabic Popular Culture therefore closely looks at the aesthetic implications of a topic ranging from Lebanese hip hop over Algerian pop novels to jihadi chants in the ‘Islamic State’ as well as from Egyptian mahraganāt music over sarcastic stories about hash dens and time travel in downtown Cairo to Saudi-Arabian YouTube-influencers. Thus, the theoretical scope widens and the reader is taken on a delightful journey to the unsettling pleasures of contemporary Arabic art and culture.
From Culture to Culturism: Rethinking "Cultural Translation" of Nomadic Bedouin Society

Abstract:This article examines the concept of Bedouin culture in the Middle East as it is perceived both by the Bedouin themselves and by various scholars. Like other cultures, Bedouin culture has undergone extensive and continuous change. This process can be understood as a dynamic construction process related to agents of change, flexibility, liquid borders, and identity politics, and has enabled Bedouin culture to enter the modern age under conditions that will ensure its continued existence. Yet “cultural translation” – i.e., Orientalist scholars and the Western travelers and historians who followed in their footsteps, alongside imperialist and colonialist powers – has viewed Bedouin culture as weak and detrimental to the sedentary population. Hence, this study presents an approach that differs from that espoused by Orientalist scholars, whose narratives tend to paint a negative picture, claiming that structural violence has defined the Bedouin and the relationships between Bedouin and Fellahin (Arabic for “peasants” or settled Arabs) populations throughout history. Thus, this article seeks to correct assumptions embedded in earlier, Orientalist studies. Accordingly, the main argument is that the Bedouin culture has a material and spiritual historical reputation. Historically, there have been integrative relations between Bedouin and Fellahin. To that end, I make use of historical literature, Arab chronicles, anthropological studies, and four in-depth interviews conducted between the years 2014–2016 with Bedouin from Yafa, a Bedouin-Fellahin village.
Homosexuality as cultural battleground in the Middle East: culture and postcolonial international theory

Abstract:The culture wars over homosexuality in the Middle East are studied here in the context of the theoretical debate on culture in International Relations and, more specifically, through a critical examination of postcolonial international theory. The paper argues that, although postcolonialism can offer a useful framework, it also has, in its poststructuralist variants, significant limitations in addressing the controversial issues surrounding homosexuality as cultural battleground in the Middle East. These limitations derive from an unconvincing interpretation of the relationship between the Middle East and modernity; and a problematic approach towards moral agency. The paper serves a dual purpose. Through the use of the empirical material, it furthers the debate within postcolonial international theory by bringing evidence to bear in support of its humanist or materialist strands. The theoretical discussion, in turn, by highlighting the intertwining of culture and power in the debates on homosexuality, strengthens the case for respecting homosexual rights in the Middle East region.

Abstract:The postwar era is generally recognized as a unique moment of impetuous growth of the social sciences, due to the interest of Western internationalist elites in the development of a set of pragmatically-oriented intellectual tools that could be of use in the confrontation between the self-proclaimed "Free World," the Soviet bloc, and emerging postcolonial nations. In the last twenty years, however, doubts about the impact of the Cold War syndrome on the development of ideas, methods, and infrastructures of Western social science in the 1950s and the 1960s have been cast by historians and social scientists alike. This article uses the episode of the 1959 Middle East scholarly trip of a Harvard sociologist, Robert N. Bellah, to highlight the complexity and the ambivalence of individual trajectories, as well as the adumbrations of critical ideas and themes in the work of an intellectual who was a recognized, if peripheral, member of some of the most influential Cold War Social Science circles. A final hypothesis on a paradox of Cold War social science is advanced, according to which the need to staff centers and institutes for the training of Cold War technicians and elites put humanists and orientalists in the condition to influence those very students who should have been trained in the most advanced and practically-oriented social sciences.

Abstract:The research deals with the issue of cultural confrontation experienced by the local culture of the peoples of the Arab Gulf countries in front of the civilizational tide and structural transformations in social life, which coincides with cultural globalization and the revolution of technology and information that transcended borders and barriers. The Gulf Arab states have witnessed major structural transformations in line with the civilizational development in the fields of life brought about by oil wealth. The study sought to identify the most prominent sources of challenge and change, the great variation in the demography of the population, where the population weight coming from abroad with its diverse culture and life practices that lead to a change in public behavior and cultural environment in the new reality, so the study stands on the size of the impact contributed by human migrations coming to the Arab Gulf countries by addressing the following variables: - Demographic difference between citizens and residents. - The density of educational institutions for communities and international schools. - The heavy presence of traditional non-Arabic media institutions and others directed at foreign communities. She presented an analysis of the implications of this, and monitored the manifestations of change, transformation and conflict experienced by local cultures, based on Julian Steward's theoretical model, which focuses on the dynamic interaction between man and the environment, technology, social structure, and organization of work. To understand the reality of the social space of the peoples of the Arab Gulf countries, And the impact of internal interactions and external influences on this space and know the shape of structural transformations in the local culture of these peoples, and determine their characteristics, and read the future of these changes by trying to understand the course of transformation.

Abstract:Culture is a nuanced term that is hard to define conclusively. It is largely used to refer to the totality of values, basic assumptions and life orientations, beliefs, policies, procedures, and codes of conduct. These are shared by a group of people and affect their behavior and the way they lead their lives. Cultural Analytics (CA), as a field, examines vast amounts of cultural data (books, images, newspapers, music, literature, etc.) to derive culturally relevant insights. Various methods and techniques (natural language processing, network analysis, visualization, and data mining) are applied to cultural components so that they are useful for research in the humanities. CA can help identify the behavioral components of human cultures and provide an accurate insight into the degree to which people conform to the current or target culture. It utilizes the corpora, metadata, and tools of text and image analysis to provide meaningful insights into the subject of research. This special issue explores how we can improve current performance in terms of understanding Arab cultural and social change and how we can implement behavioral changes or transformations more smoothly. The papers in this special issue use digitized printed texts, including books, journals, and printed ephemera to expand our knowledge of the key players in the printed world during a crucial period of modern Arab history. The combination of these sources will illuminate the intellectual trajectories of those who produced such texts and their transnational formal and informal networks.

Abstract:Abstract This book addresses the social and cultural side of events and explores the role they have in fostering change and community development. It examines the transformatory function of events in the context of development studies - as phenomena that can promote and facilitate human development, including social, societal and individual change. The book is organized into five thematic parts. The first part (chapters 1-2) seeks to establish that events are first and foremost a societal phenomenon - a fact that is often overlooked in the event management literature. The second part (chapters 3-5) focuses specifically on the ways in which ideologies underpin events. The third part (chapters 6-8) deals with the construction of values and collective visions for events. The fourth part (chapters 9-14), under the heading of Multiculturalism, Community and Integration, brings together a collection of case studies that are connected by a broader focus on the importance of events for communities. The last section (chapter 15) presents an overall summary and conclusions.

Abstract:Caught between two worlds of social transition and modern progression, young women in the Middle East have for some time been forging means to balance conventional gender roles and marriage expectations, while also advancing their position in society through improved legal status, health and educational attainment. Yet, with half of Egypt’s university-educated women out of the labour market and not seeking work, this study reveals why middle-class women continue to pursue a degree that they fail to use. This book sheds light onto the lives of highly educated middle-class Egyptian women, where they share their stories of spouse selection and marriage, and how education, wealth and unyielding gender roles influence their employment status. Through qualitative ethnography, Negotiating Marriage, Family and Work gives voice to young Egyptian women, both married and single, presenting their self-perceptions, their roles as mothers and wives, and their agency. Carried out from the time of the Arab Spring, this research uncovers the key strategies that middle-class women employ to secure their economic well-being in their marital and domestic contexts, as well as the barriers that married women face in combining paid work and family care.

Abstract:This study addresses the problem of identity and the centrality of values and ethics in Western culture and its relationship with politics, which has influenced its historical transformations. The aim of this study is to uncover the pivotal role that politics has played and continues to play throughout history in shifting the centrality of values in Western society, particularly in Europe. Consequently, it examines its capacity to control Western identity and culture willingly according to the desires and ideological orientations of its political system. The research questions this study attempts to answer is: How did politics, assumed to be an outcome of society and culture, manage to become the main player in reshaping the culture and identity of Western society? And why were values and ethics the most important tools in executing this transformation? To answer this question, the study employs a historical approach to investigate the role of politics in the West throughout its long history. It focuses on some contemporary key phenomena that have resulted from this role and their impact on Western identity and culture. These phenomena include anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, xenophobia, and LGBTQ pride. Through this analysis, the study concludes that the Western society's abandonment of its primary role in preserving its moral values and ethics, which constitute its identity and culture, in favor of politics and corrupt politicians and economists, has led to the destruction of the Enlightenment heritage that once elevated the West to its highest civilization. This role will ultimately lead Western society to an inevitable abyss, subject to the laws of civilization and the philosophy of history. This study falls within the methodological field of critical analytical studies. Its core lies in discussing and analyzing the problematic aspects of Western culture, elucidating the historical role of politics in its formation, and revealing the duality of contemporary European moral values and their immense impacts within the comprehensive interactive context.

Abstract:This article derives from my 2021 ASA presidential address. I examine how sociologists including Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, and white American sociologists have omitted key determinants of modernity in their accounts of this pivotal development in world history. Those determinants are white supremacy, western empires, racial hierarchies, colonization, slavery, Jim Crow, patriarchy, and resistance movements. This article demonstrates that any accounts omitting these determinants will only produce an anemic and misleading analysis of modernity. The central argument maintains that the sociologist W. E. B. Du Bois developed a superior analysis of modernity by analytically centering these determinants. I conclude by making a case for the development of an emancipatory sociology in the tradition of Du Boisian critical sociological thought.

Abstract:In the early twentieth century, traditionally minded intellectuals in Asia offered strikingly similar responses to modernity. This article examines the countermodern visions of Rabindranath Tagore, Muhammad Iqbal, and Liang Shuming. Inspired by high-culture versions of Hinduism, Islam, and Confucianism, these three thinkers offered parallel critiques of materialism and the decline of self-cultivation. At the same time, they brought issues of civilizational identity and universalism to the fore. While their cosmopolitanism never reached the point of making common cause politically, their intellectual legacy has enduring relevance for the global Culture clash between modernity and its critics.

Abstract:Differences in culture, language, and context alter the reading experience, meaning, and textual relations of modern Arabic literature in translation, which raises questions about the relationship between the Arabic and translated canon. Drawing on Lawrence Venuti, Pascale Casanova, and Abdelfattah Kilito, I explore translation as consecration, annexation, and decontextualization in order to illustrate the issues involved in Arabic–English literary travel and to move the scholarly debate on Arabic–English translation beyond questions of strategy and domestication. Through textual and paratextual analysis of the English translation of Ahmed Saadawi’s Frankenstein in Baghdad (2013/2018), I show how even a highly translatable modern Arabic text undergoes multiple semantic and symbolic shifts as it transfers into English. Bringing these findings together with observations on the wider Arabic literary translation environment, I argue that modern Arabic literature in translation is its own canon, deserving of independent study, whose hybridity can teach us much about the dynamics of cultural encounter, effects of literary capital, and the discursive and semantic disjunctions between English and Arabic culture and literature.

Abstract:One of the main challenges of the social sciences is to explain metasystem transitions from biological to social systems in the process of evolution. These transitions correspond to the emergence of the structure of the subject in which the external world is internalized as a symbolic image. This structure has the potential of rationally reflecting the external world and encoding it in human language. The structure of the subject was defined by Freud and Lacan within the framework of psychoanalysis and modeled by Vladimir Lefebvre using the algebra of simple relations. In that context, the binary oppositions of the Western (W) and Eastern (E) types of cognitive reflection generate not only opposite types of societies but also form the spatiotemporal pattern within a society as a whole underlying its homeostasis and internal dynamics. This opposition between Western and Eastern types is not identical to, but mirrors the probably genetically determined opposition between individuals with primarily selfish or altruistic behavior. The structure of the reflexive subject represents the basis of a sociotype that can be considered as the third component of biosocial being in addition to genotype and phenotype; it is defined a social form of the individual bonded by the social environment and social interactions. The transition to a different type of social relations and structure is based on an anticipated reflexive choice by an individual that is accompanied by a coherent response from the society. This change is defined as a "social transaction" and can be modeled by the logic of the transactional interpretation of quantum mechanics. In the history of human civilization, social transactions have resulted in the advancement and distribution of new knowledge and technologies, and in the formation, merging, splitting and decline and re-emergence of particular types of societies.

Abstract:Anthropological Theory, Ahead of Print. This article reads the emergence of a Romani political space in Jordan, and its containment in the private sphere in Palestine, through Hannah Arendt's classic The Human Condition. In modernity, Arendt argues, political potential has been stifled by a kind of despotism best characterized by a masculine domination associated with the private sphere of the family. Given that such a position is to a great extent based on Arendt's reading of Classical Greek, Roman, early Christian, and Enlightenment thought, what variations to such a neat division can be found in the case of Romani groups in Arab/Islamic contexts that are beyond Arendt's geographic and epistemological scope? This article puts Arendt's idealized notion of the public/private into conversation with the longue durée of settlement and politics of Romani groups in Palestine and Jordan. Working with Arendt and alternate but related notions of the public/private in the Middle East, this article aims to offer a nuanced understanding of kinship and politics in a context in which the political is incomplete without the private.

Abstract:Unlike the spectacular diffusion of modern Western sporting forms, Eastern movement forms (martial arts, Eastern dance, Yoga, meditation, Tai Chi Chuan, Qigong, etc.) have been quietly entering the fabric of everyday Western life over the past few decades. Adopting a structurationist approach that seeks to retain relationships between macro-, meso- and micro-levels of culture, this article considers data gathered from a range of long-term Western practitioners of a variety of Eastern movement forms in juxtaposition to broader media and documentary data also gathered on these practices. The analysis explores three Western social forces (Orientalism, reflexive modernization and commodification.) identified as acting on these movement forms in ways that intensify the process of (re)invention of tradition with particular transformative tensions. In conclusion, we identify three dispositions (preservationism, conservationism, and modernization) emerging from our analysis of these movement forms that seem to drive how individuals respond to the transformative Western social forces highlighted.

Abstract:Drawn from East, West, Central and Southern Africa, the case studies in this special issue build on several decades of important work on photography in Africa. That work has examined colonial photography and postcards, studio work from colonial times to the present, activist photography, photojournalism, and artists who work with photographic images. It has addressed issues of representation, portraiture, aesthetics, self-fashioning, identities, power and status, modernities and materiality, the roles of photographs in governance and everyday politics, and the many histories and modes of social practice around making, showing, viewing, exchanging, manipulating, reproducing, circulating and archiving photographic images. Yet these articles push such issues and topics in exciting directions by addressing new photographic circumstances emerging throughout the world, initiated through new media's technological shifts and possibilities. In Africa, this has fuelled a range of transformations over the last fifteen years or so, transformations that are still unfolding. As the articles show, digital images, mobile phone cameras and social media (also accessed via phone) constitute the potent triad that has set off these transformations.

Abstract:Abstract More than 1,000 years prior to the ‘print revolution’, a massive media transformation took place in the Middle East, namely, the introduction of paper during the eighth century. Accompanied by several further technological changes, the new writing surface—purportedly brought to Central Asia by Chinese prisoners of war—led to an increasing availability of written sources, an ‘explosion of books’. In this paper, I examine the details of this early media transformation, survey how literary and historical sources discussed this development and give insight into the developments it entailed in just a few centuries. The main part of the paper deals with sources from the Mamluk period (1250–1517) that witnessed a thorough literarization of all parts of communal and personal life.
