Abstract:In this paper, the distributed cooperative control for a class of nonlinear multi-agent systems connected by undirected graph is investigated. The dynamic of each agent is first order with unknown mismatched parameters and external disturbances. To reduce the communication burden between each agent and decrease the update frequency of the controllers, the fixed threshold event-triggered mechanisms are considered during the states's broadcasting and the control signals. Based on the adaptive method, the event-based cooperative control protocol is constructed. The asymptotically consensus tracking of all agents are guaranteed and the signals in the closed-loop system are bounded, meanwhile the Zeno behavior is excluded. Simulation results of four agents show the effectiveness and performance of the proposed method.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the consensus problem of distributed multi-agent systems with nonlinear dynamics and disturbances. The underlying system is described based upon the stochastic communication network topology. To solve this problem, we propose a multi-agent reinforcement learning-based method that converts the consensus problem with multiple nonlinear agents into one learning target and automatically learns effective strategies. The actor-critic method is adopted for updating learning policies. Moreover, we design a distributed communication method to ensure that each agent in the multi-agent system can obtain consensus information. Two examples are presented to show the effectiveness and potential of the proposed design technique.

Abstract:This article investigates the robust cooperative output regulation problem for heterogeneous uncertain linear multiagent systems, with time-varying communication topologies. Suppose that the considered systems are detectable by all measurements, rather than the conventional regulated output alone. Under this weaker detectability condition, a new distributed regulator via partial state feedback is first established with the addition of an integrator to the input channel. This is then extended to obtain the practical cooperative output regulation via measurement feedback with the employment of an extended high-gain observer.

Abstract:In this work, the leading-tracking control problem for heterogeneous and uncertain nonlinear autonomous vehicles is addressed. These latter communicate their status information over a wireless communication network and engage in cooperative movements in extra-urban traffic environment. The nonlinear vehicle dynamics are affected by time-varying parameter uncertainties, and the air-drag reduction caused by platooning is explicitly considered. The variation of V2V links as a result of cooperative manoeuvres is modelled by incorporating switching into the communication network topology. To this aim, we develop a novel robust distributed Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID)-like control protocol which ensures that all vehicles within the platoon robustly track the behaviour of the leader, despite the presence of both unknown parameters uncertainties and network switching. The analytical stability of the proposed control strategy is demonstrated using Lyapunov theory. Sufficient stability conditions are expressed as a set of feasible Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) whose solution allows the robust control gains to be properly tuned. The effectiveness of the approach is evaluated via the Mixed Traffic Simulator (MiTraS) co-simulation platform, which combines MATLAB/Simulink with SUMO microscopic traffic simulator. The exhaustive simulation analysis, involving the Monte Carlo method, is carried out considering different cooperative platooning manoeuvres, and confirms the theoretical derivation.

Abstract:This research is intended to address a robust cooperative control problem of heterogeneous uncertain nonlinear high-order fully actuated multiagent systems (HUN-HOFAMASs). A nonlinear HOFA system model is used to describe the multiagent systems (MASs) with heterogeneous uncertain nonlinear dynamics, which is called the HUN-HOFAMASs. A predictive terminal sliding-mode control-based robust cooperative control scheme is presented to address this problem. In this scheme, heterogeneous nonlinear dynamics of original system are offset to establish a linear constant HOFA system with the help of full actuation feature. Then, a terminal sliding-mode variable for enhancing the system robustness is introduced to handle the uncertainties. Furthermore, a linear incremental prediction model is developed in a HOFA form by means of a Diophantine equation. According to this model, the multistep terminal sliding-mode predictions are yielded to optimize the robust cooperative control performance and compensate for the network-induced communication constraints in the feedback and forward channels. Based on a linear matrix inequality (LMI) method, a necessary and sufficient criterion is derived to discuss the simultaneous consensus and stability of closed-loop HUN-HOFAMASs. The simulation and comparison results of cooperative flying around of multiple spacecraft system are shown to illustrate the capability and advantage of the presented predictive terminal sliding-mode control for robust cooperative control.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the problem of coordinating robotic systems with different kinematics, sensing and vision capabilities to achieve certain mission goals. An approach that makes use of a heterogeneous team of agents has several advantages when cost, integration of capabilities, or large search areas need to be considered. A heterogeneous team allows for the robots to become "specialized", accomplish sub-goals more effectively, and thus increase the overall mission efficiency. Two main scenarios are considered in this work. In the first case study we exploit mobility to implement a power control algorithm that increases the Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR) among certain members of the network. We create realistic sensing fields and manipulation by using the geometric properties of the sensor field-of-view and the manipulability metric, respectively. The control strategy for each agent of the heterogeneous system is governed by an artificial physics law that considers the different kinematics of the agents and the environment, in a decentralized fashion. Through simulation results we show that the network is able to stay connected at all times and covers the environment well. The second scenario studied in this paper is the biologically-inspired coordination of heterogeneous physical robotic systems. A team of ground rovers, designed to emulate desert seed-harvester ants, explore an experimental area using behaviors fine-tuned in simulation by a genetic algorithm. Our robots coordinate with a base station and collect clusters of resources scattered within the experimental space. We demonstrate experimentally that through coordination with an aerial vehicle, our ant-like ground robots are able to collect resources two times faster than without the use of heterogeneous coordination.

Abstract:This article develops an event-triggered cooperative robust formation control scheme for nonlinear multi-agent systems with dynamic uncertainties via reinforcement learning. By formulating a modified value function for each agent, the cooperative robust formation control problem of uncertain multi-agent systems is transformed into a cooperative optimal formation control problem of its nominal plant. To save communication and computing resources, a novel triggering condition is developed for each agent, and the controller is renovated only when an event occurs. Subsequently, the event-triggered optimal formation control law of each agent is derived by solving the coupled Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation via single-critic structure. Furthermore, theoretical analysis indicates that the developed event-triggered cooperative robust formation control approach ensures the asymptotic stability of the formation error for each uncertain agent. Eventually, two simulation cases are adopted to confirm the effectiveness of the developed control approach.

Abstract:Robust cooperative control for multi-agent systems is considered in this paper, under the framework of the distributed output regulation problem. With some fundamental assumptions, two necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the distributed output regulation problem to be solvable. The algorithm of designing the robust distributed control law is provided, with the help of internal models. It is shown that this robust controller is effective in a neighborhood of the nominal system, which is tolerant of system uncertainties.

Recently, the same problem is solved by a state feedback control approach. We aim to design a control law to address this problem. In particular, first, we construct a novel control law which fully depends on the output information. Then, a rigorous proof is given to show that by a small-gain condition, the problem is addressed under the proposed control law. Finally, an example is given to demonstrate the method.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with a distributed cooperative formation problem for a heterogeneous multiagent system with a car‐like mobile robot, a quadrotor, and an omnidirectional wheeled mobile robot. In the heterogeneous multiagent system, a three‐layer distributed cooperative formation control strategy is constructed to achieve air‐to‐ground formation, the car‐like mobile robot tracks a virtual leader, the quadrotor, and the omnidirectional wheeled mobile robot track the car‐like mobile robot. Two nonlinear leader‐follower controllers based on exponential virtual control laws are designed to maintain formation for the quadrotor and the omnidirectional wheeled mobile robot. A kinematics controller with continuous functions, an improved adaptive sliding mode controller and a suitable back‐stepping controller are introduced in the heterogeneous multiagent system, respectively. Multiagent communication is one of the key steps to accomplish multiagent time synchronization. Experimental results are given to illustrate the applicability of the proposed distributed cooperative control strategy.

Abstract:This paper investigates a robust positive consensus problem for a class of heterogeneous high-order multi-agent systems subject to external inputs. Compared with existing multi-agent consensus results, the most distinct feature of the formulated problem is that the state variables of all heterogeneous agents are confined in the positive orthant. To solve this problem, we present a two-step design procedure. By constructing an auxiliary multi-agent system as positive local reference generators, we incorporate the reference generator into an applicable decentralized robust tracking controller for each agent. The proposed distributed algorithm is proven to ensure a robust consensus fulfilling certain prescribed pattern for the multi-agent system under switching topology in the sense of finite-gain stability with respect to the external inputs. A simulation example is finally given to illustrate the effectiveness of our design.

Abstract:This article considers the distributed robust control problems of uncertain linear multi-agent systems with undirected communication topologies. It is assumed that the agents have identical nominal dynamics while subject to different norm-bounded parameter uncertainties, leading to weakly heterogeneous multi-agent systems. Distributed controllers are designed for both continuous- and discrete-time multi-agent systems, based on the relative states of neighbouring agents and a subset of absolute states of the agents. It is shown for both the continuous- and discrete-time cases that the distributed robust control problems under such controllers in the sense of quadratic stability are equivalent to the H ∞ control problems of a set of decoupled linear systems having the same dimensions as a single agent. A two-step algorithm is presented to construct the distributed controller for the continuous-time case, which does not involve any conservatism and meanwhile decouples the feedback gain design from the communication topology. Furthermore, a sufficient existence condition in terms of linear matrix inequalities is derived for the distributed discrete-time controller. Finally, the distributed robust H ∞ control problems of uncertain linear multi-agent systems subject to external disturbances are discussed.

Abstract:This paper studies the robust formation control problem for a set of heterogeneous linear agents to coordinate over an uncertain communication network, which is to achieve formation target against the transmission errors and noises resulted from the information exchange between the agents. Each communication channel of the network is modeled as an ideal transmission system with the unitary transfer function perturbed by an uncertainty. By assuming the uncertainty is norm-bounded, a distributed compensator is proposed for each agent and a sufficient condition is derived to ensure that the states of compensators approach formation target.Then, an observer-based control protocol is given, under which it is shown that each agent can follow the compensator' s and robust formation is achieved. Finally, a simulation example is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control law.

Abstract:<p>In this paper, the distributed cooperative control problem of heterogeneous nonlinear multi-agent systems (HNMASs) which are of pure-feedback forms coupled with nonaffine dynamics is considered with momentous emphasis on finite-time convergence. Multiple kinds of input constraints are also considered and can be completely unknown. To achieve the dynamic tracking for the heterogeneous followers with unknown input constrains, there are two consensus theorems are proposed, one of which can be utilized to achieve finite-time convergence. Meanwhile, it is the blend of fraction power feedback method and neural network (NN) technique that let the controlled systems have the finite-time characteristic. In the proposed tracking control protocols, only the local position information from neighbors or leader is required. In the end, the effectiveness of two proposed consensus algorithms is confirmed and compared by numerical simulation.</p>

Abstract:In this paper, we study the robust finite-time containment control problem for a class of high-order uncertain nonlinear multi-agent systems modelled as high-order integrator systems with bounded matched uncertainties. When relative state information between neighbouring agents is available, an observer-based distributed controller is proposed for each follower using the sliding mode control technique which solves the finite-time containment control problem under general directed communication graphs. When only relative output information is available, robust exact differentiators and high-order sliding-mode controllers are employed together with the distributed finite-time observers. It is shown that robust finite-time containment control can still be achieved in this situation. An application in the coordination of multiple non-holonomic mobile robots is used as an example to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategies.

Abstract:Conclusion This study provides an overview of the advancements, applications, and challenges in the field of heterogeneous MASs with a focus on cooperative control. It summarizes the existing secure control methods under cyber-attacks and safe control approaches in physical threats. Additionally, we discuss the potential applications of heterogeneous MASs and future research directions to address remaining challenges. We hope that this work can inspire researchers studying cooperative control of heterogeneous MASs.

Scaling Robust Optimization for Multi-Agent Robotic Systems: A Distributed Perspective

Abstract:This paper presents a novel distributed robust optimization scheme for steering distributions of multi-agent systems under stochastic and deterministic uncertainty. Robust optimization is a subfield of optimization which aims in discovering an optimal solution that remains robustly feasible for all possible realizations of the problem parameters within a given uncertainty set. Such approaches would naturally constitute an ideal candidate for multi-robot control, where in addition to stochastic noise, there might be exogenous deterministic disturbances. Nevertheless, as these methods are usually associated with significantly high computational demands, their application to multi-agent robotics has remained limited. The scope of this work is to propose a scalable robust optimization framework that effectively addresses both types of uncertainties, while retaining computational efficiency and scalability. In this direction, we provide tractable approximations for robust constraints that are relevant in multi-robot settings. Subsequently, we demonstrate how computations can be distributed through an Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) approach towards achieving scalability and communication efficiency. Simulation results highlight the performance of the proposed algorithm in effectively handling both stochastic and deterministic uncertainty in multi-robot systems. The scalability of the method is also emphasized by showcasing tasks with up to 100 agents. The results of this work indicate the promise of blending robust optimization, distribution steering and distributed optimization towards achieving scalable, safe and robust multi-robot control.

Design of Cooperative Output Regulators for Heterogeneous Uncertain Nonlinear Multiagent Systems

Abstract:Cooperative output regulation (COR) of multiagent systems having heterogeneous uncertain nonlinear dynamics is often challenging because of the complex system dynamics and the coupling among agents. This article develops an adaptive internal model-based distributed regulator such that the outputs of a network of nonlinear agents are all regulated to a reference despite external disturbances. Specifically, we consider heterogeneous agents having nonlinear strict-feedback forms, with nonidentical unknown control directions, and subject to an unknown linear exosystem. Addressing the nonlinear COR problem shows the capability and flexibility of the proposed output regulator. The simulation results of output synchronization of Lorenz systems and cooperative tracking control of multiple ships are presented to show the capability of the proposed regulator.

Abstract:To guarantee the stability and performance of an overall heterogeneous multi-agent system, feedback control structures must be capable of addressing the presence of heterogeneous agent-based nonlinear uncertainties, unknown actuation performance, and coupling effects. Additionally, some tasks require agents to track the leader's state and reach different states in a distributed way. Therefore, this paper proposes a distributed adaptive controller that drives a set of agents to user-assigned positions in the presence of the mentioned heterogeneous system anomalies. To address actuator dynamics, a hedging-based reference model is used to decouple adaptive updating from the actuator dynamics. To deal with the coupled dynamics, an observer-based estimation algorithm is proposed. Finally, the low-frequency learning method is used to deal with the high-frequency control response and, therefore, to obtain a better transient performance. The overall closed-loop system's stability is investigated using the Lyapunov Stability Theory, and the Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMI) technique is employed to identify stability limits regarding the actuator bandwidths of each agent. Illustrative numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the designed controller's performance in a heterogeneous uncertain multi-agent system's dynamics with unknown actuation capabilities and coupled dynamics.

Abstract:This paper considers the cooperative output regulation problem for linear multi-agent systems with a directed communication graph, heterogeneous linear subsystems, and an exosystem whose output is available to only a subset of subsystems. Both the cases with nominal and uncertain linear subsystems are studied. For the case with nominal linear subsystems, a distributed adaptive observer-based controller is designed, where the distributed adaptive observer is implemented for the subsystems to estimate the exogenous signal. For the case with uncertain linear subsystems, the proposed distributed observer and the internal model principle are combined to solve the robust cooperative output regulation problem. Compared with the existing works, one main contribution of this paper is that the proposed control schemes can be designed and implemented by each subsystem in a fully distributed fashion for general directed graphs. For the special case with undirected graphs, a distributed output feedback control law is further presented.
