Abstract:The manipulation of quantum states of light has resulted in significant advancements in both dark matter searches and gravitational wave detectors. Current dark matter searches operating in the microwave frequency range use nearly quantum-limited amplifiers. Future high frequency searches will use photon counting techniques to evade the standard quantum limit. We present a signal enhancement technique that utilizes a superconducting qubit to prepare a superconducting microwave cavity in a nonclassical Fock state and stimulate the emission of a photon from a dark matter wave. By initializing the cavity in an |n=4⟩ Fock state, we demonstrate a quantum enhancement technique that increases the signal photon rate and hence also the dark matter scan rate each by a factor of 2.78. Using this technique, we conduct a dark photon search in a band around 5.965 GHz ( 24.67 μeV ), where the kinetic mixing angle ε≥4.35×10−13 is excluded at the 90% confidence level. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.140801 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the problem of signal enhancement in dark matter detection, especially for the detection of dark matter waves in the microwave frequency range. Current dark matter search experiments usually use amplifiers close to the quantum limit to improve detection sensitivity. However, for higher - frequency searches, researchers hope to use photon - counting techniques to circumvent the limitations of the standard quantum limit. To this end, this paper proposes a technique of using superconducting qubits to prepare a superconducting microwave cavity in a non - classical Fock state to stimulate the emission of signal photons from dark matter waves. By initializing the cavity to a \(|n = 4\rangle\) Fock state, the authors show that this quantum - enhancement technique can increase the signal photon rate and the dark matter scanning rate by 2.78 times respectively. This technique has carried out a dark photon search in the frequency band range of 5.965 GHz (corresponding to 24.67 μeV) and excluded the possibility of the existence of dark photons with a kinetic mixing angle \(\epsilon\geq4.35\times 10^{- 13}\) at a 90% confidence level. Specifically, the technique described in the paper utilizes the interaction between superconducting qubits and microwave cavities to achieve enhanced detection of dark matter signals by preparing specific Fock states. This method not only increases the probability of signal detection but also can overcome the noise problem in traditional detection methods to a certain extent, thus providing a new approach for efficient detection of dark matter.
