We highlight the ease of incorporating different trial and walker types and the seamless integration of ipie with external libraries. We enable distributed Hamiltonian simulations, allowing for multi-GPU simulations of large systems. This development enabled us to compute the interaction energy of a benzene dimer with 84 electrons and 1512 orbitals, which otherwise would not have fit on a single GPU. We also support GPU-accelerated multi-slater determinant trial wavefunctions [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2406.08314" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2406.08314">arXiv:2406.08314</a>] to enable efficient and highly accurate simulations of large-scale systems. This allows for near-exact ground state energies of multi-reference clusters, [Cu$_2$O$_2$]$^{2+}$ and [Fe$_2$S$_2$(SCH$_3$)]$^{2-}$. We also describe implementations of free projection AFQMC, finite temperature AFQMC, AFQMC for electron-phonon systems, and automatic differentiation in AFQMC for calculating physical properties. These advancements position ipie as a leading platform for AFQMC research in quantum chemistry, facilitating more complex and ambitious computational method development and their applications.

Phaseless Auxiliary-Field Quantum Monte Carlo on Graphical Processing Units

Abstract:We present an implementation of phaseless Auxiliary-Field Quantum Monte Carlo (ph-AFQMC) utilizing graphical processing units (GPUs). The AFQMC method is recast in terms of matrix operations which are spread across thousands of processing cores and are executed in batches using custom Compute Unified Device Architecture kernels and the hardware-optimized cuBLAS matrix library. Algorithmic advances include a batched Sherman-Morrison-Woodbury algorithm to quickly update matrix determinants and inverses, density-fitting of the two-electron integrals, an energy algorithm involving a high-dimensional precomputed tensor, and the use of single-precision floating point arithmetic. These strategies result in dramatic reductions in wall-times for both single- and multi-determinant trial wavefunctions. For typical calculations we find speed-ups of roughly two orders of magnitude using just a single GPU card. Furthermore, we achieve near-unity parallel efficiency using 8 GPU cards on a single node, and can reach moderate system sizes via a local memory-slicing approach. We illustrate the robustness of our implementation on hydrogen chains of increasing length, and through the calculation of all-electron ionization potentials of the first-row transition metal atoms. We compare long imaginary-time calculations utilizing a population control algorithm with our previously published correlated sampling approach, and show that the latter improves not only the efficiency but also the accuracy of the computed ionization potentials. Taken together, the GPU implementation combined with correlated sampling provides a compelling computational method that will broaden the application of ph-AFQMC to the description of realistic correlated electronic systems.

Abstract:Recent developments in path integral methodology have significantly reduced the computational expense of including quantum mechanical effects in the nuclear motion in ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. However, the implementation of these developments requires a considerable programming effort, which has hindered their adoption. Here we describe i-PI, an interface written in Python that has been designed to minimise the effort required to bring state-of-the-art path integral techniques to an electronic structure program. While it is best suited to first principles calculations and path integral molecular dynamics, i-PI can also be used to perform classical molecular dynamics simulations, and can just as easily be interfaced with an empirical forcefield code. Abstract:QMCPACK has enabled cutting-edge materials research on supercomputers for over a decade. It scales nearly ideally but has low single-node efficiency due to the physics-based abstractions using array-of-structures objects, causing inefficient vectorization. We present a systematic approach to transform QMCPACK to better exploit the new hardware features of modern CPUs in portable and maintainable ways. We develop miniapps for fast prototyping and optimizations. We implement new containers in structure-of-arrays data layout to facilitate vectorizations by the compilers. Further speedup and smaller memory-footprints are obtained by computing data on the fly with the vectorized routines and expanding single-precision use. All these are seamlessly incorporated in production QMCPACK. We demonstrate upto 4.5x speedups on recent Intel processors and IBM Blue Gene/Q for representative workloads. Energy consumption is reduced significantly commensurate to the speedup factor. Memory-footprints are reduced by up-to 3.8x, opening the possibility to solve much larger problems of future.

Abstract:Monte Carlo integration is a widely used numerical method for approximating integrals, which is often computationally expensive. In recent years, quantum computing has shown promise for speeding up Monte Carlo integration, and several quantum algorithms have been proposed to achieve this goal. In this paper, we present an application of Quantum Machine Learning (QML) and Grover's amplification algorithm to build a new tool for estimating Monte Carlo integrals. Our method, which we call Quantum Fourier Iterative Amplitude Estimation (QFIAE), decomposes the target function into its Fourier series using a Parametrized Quantum Circuit (PQC), specifically a Quantum Neural Network (QNN), and then integrates each trigonometric component using Iterative Quantum Amplitude Estimation (IQAE). This approach builds on Fourier Quantum Monte Carlo Integration (FQMCI) method, which also decomposes the target function into its Fourier series, but QFIAE avoids the need for numerical integration of Fourier coefficients. This approach reduces the computational load while maintaining the quadratic speedup achieved by IQAE. To evaluate the performance of QFIAE, we apply it to a test function that corresponds with a particle physics scattering process and compare its accuracy with other quantum integration methods and the analytic result. Our results show that QFIAE achieves comparable accuracy while being suitable for execution on real hardware. We also demonstrate how the accuracy of QFIAE improves by increasing the number of terms in the Fourier series. In conclusion, QFIAE is a promising end-to-end quantum algorithm for Monte Carlo integrals that combines the power of PQC with Fourier analysis and IQAE to offer a new approach for efficiently approximating integrals with high accuracy.

Efficient and portable acceleration of quantum chemical many-body methods in mixed floating point precision using OpenACC compiler directives

Abstract:It is demonstrated how the non-proprietary OpenACC standard of compiler directives may be used to compactly and efficiently accelerate the rate-determining steps of two of the most routinely applied many-body methods of electronic structure theory, namely the second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2) model in its resolution-of-the-identity (RI) approximated form and the (T) triples correction to the coupled cluster singles and doubles model (CCSD(T)). By means of compute directives as well as the use of optimized device math libraries, the operations involved in the energy kernels have been ported to graphics processing unit (GPU) accelerators, and the associated data transfers correspondingly optimized to such a degree that the final implementations (using either double and/or single precision arithmetics) are capable of scaling to as large systems as allowed for by the capacity of the host central processing unit (CPU) main memory. The performance of the hybrid CPU/GPU implementations is assessed through calculations on test systems of alanine amino acid chains using one-electron basis sets of increasing size (ranging from double- to pentuple-zeta quality). For all but the smallest problem sizes of the present study, the optimized accelerated codes (using a single multi-core CPU host node in conjunction with six GPUs) are found to be capable of reducing the total time-to-solution by at least an order of magnitude over optimized, OpenMP-threaded CPU-only reference implementations.

Generating QM1B with PySCF$_{\text{IPU}}$

Abstract:The emergence of foundation models in Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing have resulted in immense progress on downstream tasks. This progress was enabled by datasets with billions of training examples. Similar benefits are yet to be unlocked for quantum chemistry, where the potential of deep learning is constrained by comparatively small datasets with 100k to 20M training examples. These datasets are limited in size because the labels are computed using the accurate (but computationally demanding) predictions of Density Functional Theory (DFT). Notably, prior DFT datasets were created using CPU supercomputers without leveraging hardware acceleration. In this paper, we take a first step towards utilising hardware accelerators by introducing the data generator PySCF$_{\text{IPU}}$ using Intelligence Processing Units (IPUs). This allowed us to create the dataset QM1B with one billion training examples containing 9-11 heavy atoms. We demonstrate that a simple baseline neural network (SchNet 9M) improves its performance by simply increasing the amount of training data without additional inductive biases. To encourage future researchers to use QM1B responsibly, we highlight several limitations of QM1B and emphasise the low-resolution of our DFT options, which also serves as motivation for even larger, more accurate datasets. Auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo calculations with multiple-projector pseudopotentials

Abstract:We have implemented recently developed multiple-projector pseudopotentials into the planewave based auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (pw-AFQMC) method. Multiple-projector pseudopotentials can yield smaller planewave cut-offs while maintaining or improving transferability. This reduces the computational cost of pw-AFQMC, increasing its reach to larger and more complicated systems. We discuss the use of non-local pseudopotentials in the separable Kleinman-Bylander form, and the implementation in pw-AFQMC of the multiple-projector optimized norm-conserving pseudopotential ONCVPSP of Hamann. The accuracy of the method is first demonstrated by equation-of-state calculations of the ionic insulator NaCl and more strongly correlated metal Cu. The method is then applied to calibrate the accuracy of density functional theory (DFT) predictions of the phase stability of recently discovered high temperature and pressure superconducting sulfur hydride systems. We find that DFT results are in good agreement with pw-AFQMC, due to near cancellation of electron-electron correlation effects between different structures.

Abstract:We describe a new open-source Python-based package for high accuracy correlated electron calculations using quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) in real space: PyQMC . PyQMC implements modern versions of QMC algorithms in an accessible format, enabling algorithmic development and easy implementation of complex workflows. Tight integration with the PySCF environment allows for a simple comparison between QMC calculations and other many-body wave function techniques, as well as access to high accuracy trial wave functions.

Abstract:Atomic-scale simulations have progressed tremendously over the past decade, largely thanks to the availability of machine-learning interatomic potentials. These potentials combine the accuracy of electronic structure calculations with the ability to reach extensive length and time scales. The i-PI package facilitates integrating the latest developments in this field with advanced modeling techniques thanks to a modular software architecture based on inter-process communication through a socket interface. The choice of Python for implementation facilitates rapid prototyping but can add computational overhead. In this new release, we carefully benchmarked and optimized i-PI for several common simulation scenarios, making such overhead negligible when i-PI is used to model systems up to tens of thousands of atoms using widely adopted machine learning interatomic potentials, such as Behler–Parinello, DeePMD, and MACE neural networks. We also present the implementation of several new features, including an efficient algorithm to model bosonic and fermionic exchange, a framework for uncertainty quantification to be used in conjunction with machine-learning potentials, a communication infrastructure that allows for deeper integration with electronic-driven simulations, and an approach to simulate coupled photon-nuclear dynamics in optical or plasmonic cavities.

Abstract:The accuracy of phaseless auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (ph-AFQMC) can be systematically improved with better trial states. Using multi-Slater determinant trial states, ph-AFQMC has the potential to faithfully treat strongly correlated systems, while balancing the static and dynamical correlations on an equal footing. This preprint presents an implementation and application of graphics processing unit-accelerated ph-AFQMC, for multi-Slater determinant trial wavefunctions (GPU-accelerated MSD-AFQMC), to enable efficient simulation of large-scale, strongly correlated systems. This approach allows for nearly-exact computation of ground state energies in multi-reference systems. Our GPU-accelerated MSD-AFQMC is implemented in the open-source code \texttt{ipie}, a Python-based AFQMC package [\textit{J. Chem. Theory Comput.}, 2022, 19(1): 109-121]. We benchmark the performance of the GPU code on transition-metal clusters like [Cu$_2$O$_2$]$^{2+}$ and [Fe$_2$S$_2$(SCH$_3$)]$^{2-}$. The GPU code achieves at least sixfold speedup in both cases, comparing the timings of a single A100 GPU to that of a 32-CPU node. For [Fe$_2$S$_2$(SCH$_3$)]$^{2-}$, we demonstrate that our GPU MSD-AFQMC can recover the dynamical correlation necessary for chemical accuracy with an MSD trial, despite the large number of determinants required ($>10^5$). Our work significantly enhances the efficiency of MSD-AFQMC calculations for large, strongly correlated molecules by utilizing GPUs, offering a promising path for exploring the electronic structure of transition metal complexes.

Abstract:Accurately calculating the electronic structure of strongly correlated chemical systems necessitates a detailed description of both static and dynamical electron correlations, posing a significant challenge in ab initio quantum chemistry. Although the high memory and computational demands generally limit these calculations to relatively modest systems, the advanced computational capabilities of modern GPUs provide new avenues to expand these limits. However, complex control flows inherent to computation notably impair performance on GPUs. Furthermore, the significant disparity in computational load across different branches leads to load imbalance, challenging the large-scale simulations. In this work, we introduce PASCI, a heterogeneous parallel computing framework designed to quickly and efficiently parallelize the computation of dynamical correlation energy based on determinants. The features of the PASCI framework include (1) a divergence-avoiding GPU algorithm, (2) a three-level load-mapping strategy to ensure load balance across processors, GPU warps, and GPU threads, (3) performance models for memory footprint and computation, and (4) seamless integration with existing quantum chemistry software. Experimental results using an NVIDIA A100 GPU demonstrate that our new GPU algorithm achieves an average 6.6x (up to 13.8x) peak performance increase and 2-4 orders of magnitude speedup in practical usage compared to its original GPU implementation. Moreover, PASCI exhibits excellent scalability, highlighting its potential as a powerful high-performance computing tool in complex quantum chemistry research.

Abstract:Quantum computing is a promising way to systematically solve the longstanding computational problem, the ground state of a many-body fermion system. Many efforts have been made to realise certain forms of quantum advantage in this problem, for instance, the development of variational quantum algorithms. A recent work by Huggins et al. reports a novel candidate, i.e. a quantum-classical hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm with a reduced bias in comparison to its fully-classical counterpart. In this paper, we propose a family of scalable quantum-assisted Monte Carlo algorithms where the quantum computer is used at its minimal cost and still can reduce the bias. By incorporating a Bayesian inference approach, we can achieve this quantum-facilitated bias reduction with a much smaller quantum-computing cost than taking empirical mean in amplitude estimation. Besides, we show that the hybrid Monte Carlo framework is a general way to suppress errors in the ground state obtained from classical algorithms. Our work provides a Monte Carlo toolkit for achieving quantum-enhanced calculation of fermion systems on near-term quantum devices.

Abstract:We present the first application of field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) as new, customizable hardware architectures for carrying out fast and energy-efficient quantum dynamics simulations of large chemical/material systems. Instead of tailoring the software to fixed hardware, which is the typical case for writing quantum chemistry code for central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs), FPGAs allow us to directly customize the underlying hardware (even at the level of specific electrical signals in the circuit) to give a truly optimized computational performance for quantum dynamics calculations. By offloading the most intensive and repetitive calculations onto an FPGA, we show that the computational performance of our real-time electron dynamics calculations can even exceed that of optimized commercial mathematical libraries running on high-performance GPUs. In addition to this impressive computational speedup, we show that FPGAs are immensely energy-efficient and consume 4 times less energy than modern GPU or CPU architectures. These energy savings are a practical and important metric for supercomputing centers (many of which exceed over $1 million in power costs alone), as exascale computing capabilities become more widespread and commonplace. Taken together, the implementation techniques and performance metrics of our study demonstrate that FPGAs could play a promising role in upcoming quantum chemistry and materials science applications, particularly for the acceleration and energy-efficient execution of quantum dynamics calculations.

It is of particular importance in areas ranging from materials science, biochemistry and condensed matter physics. Here, we propose a full quantum eigensolver (FQE) algorithm to calculate the molecular ground energies and electronic structures using quantum gradient descent. Compared to existing classical-quantum hybrid methods such as variational quantum eigensolver (VQE), our method removes the classical optimizer and performs all the calculations on a quantum computer with faster convergence. The gradient descent iteration depth has a favorable complexity that is logarithmically dependent on the system size and inverse of the precision. Moreover, the FQE can be further simplified by exploiting perturbation theory for the calculations of intermediate matrix elements, and obtain results with a precision that satisfies the requirement of chemistry application. The full quantum eigensolver can be implemented on a near-term quantum computer. With the rapid development of quantum computing hardware, FQE provides an efficient and powerful tool to solve quantum chemistry problems.

Abstract:Nonlinear Optical Spectroscopy is a well-developed field with theoretical and experimental advances that have benefited multiple disciplines, including chemistry, biology, and physics. However, for the accurate interpretation of the corresponding multi-dimensional spectra, there is a need for precise quantum dynamical simulations based on model Hamiltonians. In this article, we present the initial release of our code, QuDPy (Quantum Dynamics in Python), which provides a robust numerical platform for performing quantum dynamics simulations based on model systems, including open quantum systems. A distinguishing feature of our approach is the ability to specify various high-order optical response pathways in the form of double-sided Feynman diagrams through a straightforward input syntax. This syntax outlines the time-ordering of ket-sided or bra-sided optical interactions acting on the time-evolving density matrix of the system. We utilize the quantum dynamics capabilities of QuTip to simulate the spectral response of complex systems, allowing us to compute virtually any n -th order optical response of the model system. To illustrate the utility of our approach, we provide a series of example calculations. Abstract:The solution of physical problems discretized using the finite element methods using quantum computers remains relatively unexplored. Here, we present a unified formulation (FEqa) to solve such problems using quantum annealers. FEqa is a hybrid technique in which the finite element problem is formulated on a classical computer, and the residual is minimized using a quantum annealer. The advantages of FEqa include utilizing a single qubit per degree of freedom, enforcing Dirichlet boundary conditions a priori, reaching arbitrary solution precision, and eliminating the possibility of the annealer generating invalid results. FEqa is scalable on the classical portion of the algorithm due to its Single Program Multiple Data (SPMD) nature and does not rely on ground state solutions from the annealer. The exponentially large number of collocation points used in quantum annealing are investigated for their cosine measures, and new iterative techniques are developed to exploit their properties. The quantum annealer has clear advantages in computational time over simulated annealing, for the example problems presented in this paper solved on the D-Wave machine. The presented work provides a pathway to solving physical problems using quantum annealers.
