Abstract:In this paper, based on the collaborative integration and modeling calculation of single-point Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV), a 3D oblique non-contact dynamic attitude measurement system is proposed. By using two groups of three-dimensional measurement devices which consist of three LDVs, our system can measure the translation and rotation of the measured object. The experiments are carried out under line vibration environment, and the elicited results are compared to those elicited using fiber optic gyroscope (FOG), which verified the feasibility of our system.

Abstract:Scientific instruments and facilities used for calibrating the dynamic angle error of inertial instruments have played more and more important roles in mechanism error research and accuracy improvement. Present attitude measurement methods can not simultaneously meet the requirements of the inertial instrument angle error calibration in dynamic environments such as linear or angular vibration. Based on the collaborative integration and modeling calculation of single-point laser Doppler vibrometer, this paper proposes a dynamic attitude measurement system that can completely realize non-contact real-time accurate three-dimensional rotation angle measurement, filling in the blank of non-contact dynamic angle error calibration of inertial instrument. Besides, we propose a distance calibration method to reduce the angle measurement error from 0.34 degrees to 0.0072 degrees, which fully satisfies the non-contact measurement requirements of the inertial instrument.

Abstract:In order to research the characteristics of particles and its effecting mechanism to lubrication and wear,it is important that show three-dimensional shape of particles.Aimed at three-dimensional shape measurement of particles,the three-dimensional rotational stereo measuring theory was researched,rotational stereoscopic model was described by quaternion method,imaging polar line geometrical relationship was put forward,F matrix was deduced by polar geometry,and three dimensional coordinate point was calculated by using F matrix.A visual measuring instrument based on micro rotational stereoscopic vision was developed, the general solution of the system was given,and the hardware and software of the system was designed and achieved.The particles contamination was measured by using the three-dimensional rotational stereoscopic measuring system.The results show that three-dimensional stereoscopic measuring system can measure three-dimensional shape of particle contamination,and calculate three-dimensional coordinate point,and reconstruct three-dimensional model.

Abstract:The measurement principles of torque and rotational speed were analysed.A virtual torque and rotational speed measuring device was presented,which can be used to measure torque and rotational speed conveniently and accurately.The methods of designing virtual torque and rotational speed measuring device were introduced.Electrorheological experiments were carried out using this device.It shows experimentally that virtual torque and rotational speed measuring device has high accuracy and good anti-jamming ability,and the operation is simple.The virtual torque and rotational speed measuring device can be put into practical applications.

Abstract:<p>The full-field and non-contact measurement of three-dimensional motion and deformation of high-speed rotating machinery is a very challenging task in the engineering field. Two issues, the cost of high-speed camera and the decorrelation between rotated images, are hard to avoid for investigators. In this paper, a systematic solution is presented, which combines high-speed rotation image acquisition using low-speed camera with 3D digital image correlation, both low-cost, flexible and accurate. Firstly, the frequency and initial phase of high-speed rotation are calculated by FFT, and temporal phase-locked signal is generated to trigger the dual-camera asynchronously to collect the circumferential images with equal phase interval. Then a layer-by-layer matching method is proposed to search uncoded targets between two rotated images, while a binocular rotation correlating strategy to correlate the speckle subsets. Finally, the corresponded uncoded targets and speckle subsets are reconstructed in three dimension via the camera calibration results, furtherly the 3D motion and deformation fields can be obtained. Five experiments, including two measurement repeatability tests, an accuracy test, a rigid motion measurement of rotating table and a dynamic deformation measurement of ventilation fan, prove the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed method.</p>

Abstract:Traditional vibration detecting methods for rotating machines with chambers are of 'inner detecting' method, which installs transducers inside the machine chambers. But this method is heavily confined to maneuverability, safety and massive operations when applied to large scale. Contrary to the traditional methods, "outer detection" method (or non-invasive method) has its advantages. This method uses a certain non-invasive detecting method to measure the vibration and the noise of a machine, thus to obtain information as much as it can without any breakage and modification to the structure.The work described in this paper is aimed at the development of an outer detecting and analyzing system. The system uses a piezoelectric sensor as the detector, a sound card of PC as an A/D converter, a software analyzing system. It has a number of new characteristics: full functions on real-time data processing and recording; automatic fault detection and alert; multi-spectrum extended analysis functions. These mean a simpler detection method, no breakage on machine chambers, high mobility.Some faults examining experiments are completed. Especially the research is done on rotor rubbing, bearing friction and unusual multi-harmonic. Detecting methods of these faults are developed, such as fractal geometry, weight center of frequency, peak tracing and peak searching, etc. Based on the experiments, these detecting and analyzing methods have shown to be of practical use. Other features of the system include less CPU time, very suitable for real-time examinations.It is concluded that even there are many difficulties in rotating machines non-invasive method, we can still obtain some useful results.

Abstract:Rotational speed is a key parameter for the condition monitoring and control of rotating equipment such as generators, electromotors, centrifugal and machine tool spindles. This paper presents the principle and application of electrostatic sensors and correlation signal processing techniques to real-time measurement of rotational speed. Experimental tests were conducted on a test rig under a range of conditions. The results suggest that the operability and accuracy of the measurement system depend on a number of factors, in particular, the distance between the electrodes and the surface of the rotating equipment. The system performs better under higher rotational speed conditions as more electrostatic charge is produced on the rotating surface.

Abstract:The radial and axial vibration signals of a rotating machine are crucial information to understand the machine operation and to diagnose potential faults. Instead of using three single sensors to measure the horizontal, vertical and axial displacements of rotating shafts, a novel non-projection vision-based system was proposed to realize simultaneous measurement of the radial and axial displacements with high accuracy and good reliability using an tailored artificial constant density sinusoidal fringe pattern (CDSFP), which was pasted around the shaft surface and worked as a tri-axial (i.e. the horizontal, vertical and axial) displacement sensor. The measurement principle and setup of the proposed measurement system were well established. The horizontal displacement could be correctly obtained from the fringe period density changes of the CDSFP image sequence recorded by a high-speed camera. Simultaneously, the vertical displacement could be acquired by tracking the centerline of shaft whilst the axial displacement could be obtained by locating the peaks of the cross-correlation sequence of the fringe intensities. A sub-pixel method was employed to improve the displacement resolution of the developed system. The performance of the proposed system was demonstrated by the comparison of the experiments using eddy current sensors. It showed that the proposed method was an effective and accurate technique for real-time tri-axial vibration monitoring of rotating shaft. Experimental results verified the feasibility, effectiveness and good robustness of the proposed methodology, which demonstrated that the proposed system was capable of achieving accurate tri-axial vibration displacements of rotating shaft compared to the commercial eddy current sensor which could only measure one dimensional displacement at each measurement. Therefore, the vision-based tri-axial vibration monitoring system could be recommended for real engineering applications in condition monitoring of rotating shafts. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Rotational speed is a key parameter for the condition monitoring and control of rotating machineries, such as generators, electromotors, and centrifugal and machine tool spindles. It is essential for precision machining and early warning of faults to measure rotational speed in real time. This paper presents the principle and application of electrostatic sensors and correlation signal processing techniques to real-time measurement of rotational speed. The electrostatic sensors and signal conditioning and processing units were designed and implemented. Experimental tests were conducted on a laboratory-scale test rig under a range of conditions including different diameters of the shaft. The results obtained suggest that the distance between the electrodes and the surface of the rotating object is a key factor affecting the performance of the measurement system. The system performs better in terms of accuracy and repeatability at a higher rotational speed as more electrostatic charge is produced on the rotating surface. High and stable correlation coefficients acquired during the tests suggest that the measurement system is capable of providing reliable measurement of rotational speed under realistic industrial conditions.

Abstract:Digital image correlation has emerged as a popular method for the dynamic performance measurement of metallic and polymer sheets, owing to the benefits of being a noncontact, full-field, and high-precision method. Two or more high-speed cameras are required for full-field vibration measurements with three-dimensional digital image correlation, which is generally costly. Perpendicular view to the specimen surface is conventional in two-dimensional digital image correlation, and the out-of-plane displacement is regarded as a part of systematic errors. In this study, a single view method was implemented with no complex optical settings. The full-field vibration displacement of the metal sheet was measured with projection components, and the first four orders of displacement modes were identified. Finite element analysis and traditional experimental modal analysis were then implemented to validate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed approach. The results show that the dynamic parameters, including the natural frequencies and mode shapes, were well consistent. Meanwhile, there is a significant difference in the length of mode shape vectors. The number of measurement points in the proposed method is 2016, which is far more than the number of measurement points in the traditional experimental modal analysis. This would be convenient and beneficial for damage identification towards thin-wall parts including turbine blade with the continuum hypothesis of mode shapes and a single-camera DIC system. It is worth noting that this is effective with conditions of small deformation vibration and no rigid-body rotation.

Abstract:Dynamic and accurate measurement of instantaneous rotational speed is desirable in many industrial processes for both condition monitoring and safety control purposes. This article presents a novel imaging-based system for instantaneous rotational speed measurement. The low-cost imaging device focuses on the side surface of a rotating shaft without the use of a marker, entailing benefits of noncontact measurement, low maintenance, and wide applicability. Meanwhile, new periodicity determination methods based on the Chirp-Z transform and parabolic interpolation-based autocorrelation algorithm are proposed to process the signal of similarity level reconstructed using an image correlation algorithm. Experimental investigations are conducted on a purpose-built test rig to quantify the effects of the periodicity determination algorithm, frame rate, image resolution, exposure time, illumination conditions, and photographic angle on the accuracy and reliability of the measurement system. Experimental results under steady and transient operating conditions demonstrate that the system is capable of providing measurements of a constant or gradually varying speed with a relative error not greater than +/- 0.6% over a speed range from 100 to 3000 revolutions per minute (r/min). Under step-change conditions, the proposed system can achieve valid speed measurement with a maximum error of 1.4%.

Abstract:Surface acoustic wave sensors offer overwhelming advantages over other potentially competitive sensing technologies in rotating mechanical structures for their wireless and passive capability. Nevertheless, the challenges of using these sensors have not been adequately addressed. Radio frequency signal of surface acoustic wave sensors acts as not only the role of data transmission but also the role of energy supply during the sensing system working process. Thus, the performance of surface acoustic wave sensors when they are used to monitor rotating spindles should be investigated due to the harsh metallic environments for radio propagation in machine tool. This article aims to experimentally study the performance of surface acoustic wave sensors on both rotating spindle with Computer Numerical Control machine tool and self-developed spindle apparatus. The measurement study is performed using a temperature surface acoustic wave sensor working in the Industrial Scientific and Medical (ISM) band (433.05-434.79MHz). Experimental results have shown that transmission and measurement characteristics were closely depended on the surface acoustic wave sensor installation location and rotation speeds. The conclusions will directly guide the sensor location optimization, power setting, errors avoidance, or correction in the future work.

Abstract:The vibration measurement of rotary cutting tools is of great significance in machining accuracy control and process stability monitoring. Several undirect and direct techniques, such as accelerometers and laser vibrometry, have been developed for this issue, but each has its own limitations. In this article, a novel direct measurement approach, termed close-range microamplitude millimeter-wave vibration (CMMV) measurement, is proposed to achieve reliable and accurate vibration displacement measurement of rotary tools. In CMMV, to accurately quantify the tiny vibration of rotary tools with a compact and low-cost single-frequency millimeter-wave sensor in a short range, the critical near-field amplitude modulation effect, dc offset, and imbalance are decoupled and determined with comprehensive calibration, including premotion and parameter optimization. To this end, the detailed method and implementation procedures are established, following with the further characteristic analysis for extracting the eccentricity error and roundness error. Experimental validations with various scenarios show that the proposed method has high accuracy with micrometer level, offering a promising approach for vibration measurement of rotary tools with online monitoring.

Abstract:Non-contact vibration measurements are relevant for non-invasively characterizing the mechanical behavior of structures. This paper presents a novel methodology for full-field vibrational analysis at high frequencies using the three-dimensional digital image correlation technique combined with the projection of a speckle pattern. The method includes stereo calibration and image processing routines for accurate three-dimensional data acquisition. Quantitative analysis allows the extraction of several deformation parameters, such as the cross-correlation coefficients, shape and intensity, as well as the out-of-plane displacement fields and mode shapes. The potential of the methodology is demonstrated on an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle wing made of composite material, followed by experimental validation with reference accelerometers. The results obtained with the projected three-dimensional digital image correlation show a percentage of error below 5% compared with the measures of accelerometers, achieving, therefore, high sensitivity to detect the dynamic modes in structures made of composite material.

Abstract:Measurement and Control, Ahead of Print. The formed surface quality of metallic sealing ring of aero-engine affects the aircraft service performance directly. However, existing inspection methods, such as the final destructive inspection and the line laser scanner section profile measurement, only evaluate the formed quality from a 2-D view, that is, single or multiple radial formed section profiles. The lack of geometric information of 3-D surface is not conducive to the comprehensive monitoring of forming quality and process planning. Therefore, based on the line laser scanners, this paper mainly proposes a vibration errors compensation method based on self-feature registration. Aiming at the problem of rigid transformation of the measurement profile caused by random vibration during the rotary motion of metallic sealing ring, the feature of measurement profile in stationary scene (MPSS), that is, the medial axis, is used as the reference for the correct pose of measurement profile. The principle of finding the correct pose of measurement profile in rotary motion scene (MPRMS) is to minimize the distance between the medial axes. Next, based on the rotary motion information of metallic sealing ring and the geometric information of measurement system, a 3-D reconstruction matrix is built, so as to convert each measurement profile to the base coordinate system in turn, and finally a 3-D dynamic measurement method for the metallic sealing ring forming surface is built. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through simulation experiment and real measurement.

Abstract:The main intention of this study was to investigate the full-field measurement of de-formation and vibration using a program we developed for digital image correlation. Digital image correlation is a measuring method that can calculate the displacement of each point on an object by using recorded images. By capturing continuous images of the object in deformation or in motion, the displacements of feature points on the object can be tracked and used in calculations to determine the full-field deformation, strain and vibration of the object. We used the fast and simple algorithm in our program as the core, and conducted non-contact full-field displacement measurement by tracking feature points from images taken after motion. The measuring accuracy can be up to 0.1 pixel. Our experimental results show the technique to be very accurate and useful. We also applied this technique under conditions where an ordinary sensor could not be used.

Abstract:Online relative location measurement of spatial geometric features is necessary for the high-precision manufacturing of long rotating parts. However, existing methods are imperfect because they are limited by the rotation state of the measured object or the measurement allowable space. To solve these problems, this study proposes a robust online measurement approach based on angle and size transfer, size transfer and analytical geometry theories. A polyhedral prism is used to synchronously calibrate the zero position of the laser displacement sensor, then a geometric model of the rotation angle corresponding to the sensor displacement change is established. Using only the displacement data, the 3-D relative location of multiple geometric features on different parallel planes is deduced by analytical geometry theory. The phase angle measurement of a diesel engine camshaft was used to verify the method. The results show that the method has high measurement precision, good stability and high efficiency.

Rotational Speed Measurement Through Image Similarity Evaluation and Spectral Analysis

Abstract:Accurate and reliable measurement of rotational speed is desirable in a variety of industries. This paper presents a rotational speed measurement system based on a low-cost imaging device with a simple marker on the rotor. Sequential images are pre-processed through denoising, histogram equalization, and circle Hough transform, and then processed by similarity evaluation methods to obtain the similarity level of images. Finally, the rotational speed is obtained through the Chirp-Z transform on the restructured signals. The measurement principle, structure design, and performance assessment of the proposed system are presented. The effects of different influence factors, including frame rate, marker shape and size, an algorithm for image similarity evaluation, illumination conditions, shooting angle and photographic distance, on the performance of the measurement system are quantified and discussed through a series of experimental tests on a laboratory test rig. Experimental results suggest that the system is capable of providing constant rotational speed measurement with a maximum relative error of ±0.6% and a repeatability of less than 0.6% over a speed range from 100 to 900 RPM. Under varying speed conditions the proposed system can achieve valid measurement with a relative error within ±1% over the speed range of 300 to 900 RPM.

Abstract:Vibration measurement, particularly mode shape measurement, is an important aspect of structural dynamic analysis since it can validate finite element or analytical vibration models. Scanning laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV) and high-speed digital image correlation have become dominant methods for experimental mode shape measurement. However, these methods have high equipment costs and several disadvantages regarding spatial or temporal performance. This paper proposes a laser Doppler vibrometer induced stroboscopic digital image correction for non-contact mode shape and operational deflection shape measurement. Our results verify that single-point LDV and normal rate cameras can be used obtain high spatial resolution mode shape and operational deflection shape. Measurement frequency range is much higher than the camera capturing rate. We also show that the proposed approach coincides well with time-averaged electronic speckle pattern interferometry.

Abstract:The acquisition of parameters plays a crucial role in rotary systems, while multiparameter measurements with single or integrated sensing units have distinct advantages over those with multiple or separated ones. This work proposed a passive non-interference scheme for synchronously measuring multiple parameters, such as rotation speed, diametral deviation, and diametral vibration, by fully using the vibrational characteristics of a magnet-integrated piezo-cantilever excited by rotational magnetic coupling. First, the measurement of rotation speed is achieved with high linearity, high accuracy, and broad range. Second, the measurement of diametral deviation features non-contact compared to mechanical or electromagnetic ones, and is light-free compared to optical methods. Third, the measurement of diametral vibration is discretely realized by creatively considering physical magnetic coupling as an equivalent to digital signal sampling, which is fundamentally different from previous ones, and extendable to other physical couplings. The proposed scheme experimentally demonstrated its effectiveness and feasibility with a typical rotary disk and is theoretically analyzed by the interaction between rotating magnets, the electro-mechanical response of the piezo-cantilever, as well as the coupling-based sampling model. The proposed scheme is believed to have a widespread application, from the precision measuring of rotary systems to health monitoring of manufacturing centers, further fulfilling its potentials like structure miniaturization and higher adaptivity.
