Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to extend the store of models able to support integrable defects by investigating the two-dimensional Boussinesq nonlinear wave equation. As has been previously noted in many examples, insisting that a defect contributes to energy and momentum to ensure their conservation, despite the presence of discontinuities and the explicit breaking of translation invariance, leads to sewing conditions relating the two fields and their derivatives on either side of the defect. The manner in which several types of soliton solutions to the Boussinesq equation are affected by the defect is explored and reveals new effects that have not been observed in other integrable systems, such as the possibility of a soliton reflecting from a defect or of a defect decaying into one or two solitons.

A multisymplectic approach to defects in integrable classical field theory

Abstract:We introduce the concept of multisymplectic formalism, familiar in covariant field theory, for the study of integrable defects in 1+1 classical field theory. The main idea is the coexistence of two Poisson brackets, one for each spacetime coordinate. The Poisson bracket corresponding to the time coordinate is the usual one describing the time evolution of the system. Taking the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation as an example, we introduce the new bracket associated to the space coordinate. We show that, in the absence of any defect, the two brackets yield completely equivalent Hamiltonian descriptions of the model. However, in the presence of a defect described by a frozen Bäcklund transformation, the advantage of using the new bracket becomes evident. It allows us to reinterpret the defect conditions as canonical transformations. As a consequence, we are also able to implement the method of the classical r matrix and to prove Liouville integrability of the system with such a defect. The use of the new Poisson bracket completely bypasses all the known problems associated with the presence of a defect in the discussion of Liouville integrability. A by-product of the approach is the reinterpretation of the defect Lagrangian used in the Lagrangian description of integrable defects as the generating function of the canonical transformation representing the defect conditions.

From Defects to Boundaries

Abstract:In this paper we describe how relativistic field theories containing defects are equivalent to a class of boundary field theories. As a consequence previously derived results for boundaries can be directly applied to defects, these results include reduction formulas, the Coleman-Thun mechanism and Cutcosky rules. For integrable theories the defect crossing unitarity equation can be derived and defect operator found. For a generic purely transmitting impurity we use the boundary bootstrap method to obtain solutions of the defect Yang-Baxter equation. The groundstate energy on the strip with defects is also calculated.

Abstract:We study the Euclidean effective action and the full fermion propagator for a Dirac field in the presence of a scalar field with a domain wall defect, in 2+1 dimensions. We include quantum effects due to both fermion and scalar field fluctuations, in a one-loop approximation. The results are interpreted in terms of the quantum stability of the zero mode solution. We also study, for this system, the induced `inertial' electric field for the fermions on the defect, due to the quantum fluctuations of the scalar field.

On Framed Quivers, BPS Invariants and Defects

Abstract:In this note we review some of the uses of framed quivers to study BPS invariants of Donaldson-Thomas type. We will mostly focus on non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds. In certain cases the study of these invariants can be approached as a generalized instanton problem in a six dimensional cohomological Yang-Mills theory. One can construct a quantum mechanics model based on a certain framed quiver which locally describes the theory around a generalized instanton solution. The problem is then reduced to the study of the moduli spaces of representations of these quivers. Examples include the affine space and noncommutative crepant resolutions of orbifold singularities. In the second part of the survey we introduce the concepts of defects in physics and argue with a few examples that they give rise to a modified Donaldson-Thomas problem. We mostly focus on divisor defects in six dimensional Yang-Mills theory and their relation with the moduli spaces of parabolic sheaves. In certain cases also this problem can be reformulated in terms of framed quivers.

Towards a quantum field theory description of nonlocal spacetime defects

Abstract:We propose an ansatz for encoding the physics of nonlocal spacetime defects in the Green's functions for a scalar field theory defined on a causal set. This allows us to numerically study the effects of nonlocal spacetime defects on the discrete Feynman propagator of the theory defined on the causal set in 1+1 dimensions, and to compare to the defect-free limit. The latter approaches the expected continuum result, on average, when the number of points becomes large. When defects are present, two points with the same invariant spacetime interval can have different propagation amplitudes, depending on whether the propagation is between two ordinary spacetime points, two defects, or a defect and an ordinary point. We show that a coarse-grained description that is only sensitive to the average effect of the defects can be interpreted as a defect-induced mass and wave-function renormalization of the scalar theory.

Abstract:We study BPS line defects in N=2 supersymmetric four-dimensional field theories. We focus on theories of "quiver type," those for which the BPS particle spectrum can be computed using quiver quantum mechanics. For a wide class of models, the renormalization group flow between defects defined in the ultraviolet and in the infrared is bijective. Using this fact, we propose a way to compute the BPS Hilbert space of a defect defined in the ultraviolet, using only infrared data. In some cases our proposal reduces to studying representations of a "framed" quiver, with one extra node representing the defect. In general, though, it is different. As applications, we derive a formula for the discontinuities in the defect renormalization group map under variations of moduli, and show that the operator product algebra of line defects contains distinguished subalgebras with universal multiplication rules. We illustrate our results in several explicit examples.

Abstract:Physical quantities with long lifetimes have both theoretical significance in the study of quantum many-body systems and practical implications for quantum technologies. In this manuscript, we investigate the roles played by topological defects in the construction of quasi-conserved quantities, using as a prototypical example the Kramers-Wannier duality defect in a deformed 1d quantum transverse field Ising model. We construct the duality defect Hamiltonian in three different ways: half-chain Kramers-Wannier transformation, utilization of techniques in the Ising fusion category, and defect-modified weak integrability breaking deformation. The third method is also applicable for the study of generic integrable defects under weak integrability breaking deformations. We also work out the deformation of defect-modified higher charges in the model and study their slower decay behavior. Furthermore, we consider the corresponding duality defect twisted deformed Floquet transverse field Ising model, and investigate the stability of the isolated zero mode associated with the duality defect in the integrable Floquet Ising model, under such weak integrability breaking deformation.

Aspects of critical O$(N)$ model with boundary and defect

Abstract:In this thesis, we explore the critical phenomena in the presence of extended objects, which we call defects, aiming for a better understanding of the properties of non-local objects ubiquitous in our world and a more practical and realistic study of criticality. To this end, we study the statistical O$(N)$ vector model in $(4-\epsilon)$ dimensions with three kinds of defects: a line defect constructed by smearing an O$(N)$ vector field along one direction and Dirichlet and Neumann boundaries. A conventional approach to critical phenomena would be to perform perturbative calculations using Feynman diagrams and doing renormalization group analysis. But we here also take a different but complementary approach based on three axioms that include conformal symmetry of the theory at the criticality. We apply this axiomatic framework to the critical O$(N)$ model with a defect and reproduce the perturbative results at the leading non-trivial order in $\epsilon$, substantiating the validity of our approach. Along the way, we develop and refine the axiomatic framework to derive anomalous dimensions of the composite operators on the defect that have not been accessible in the existing literature by focusing on the analyticity of the correlation functions.

Abstract:Driven by breakthroughs in experimental and theoretical techniques, the study of non-equilibrium quantum physics is a rapidly expanding field with many exciting new developments. Amongst the manifold ways the topic can be investigated, one dimensional system provide a particularly fine platform. The trifecta of strongly correlated physics, powerful theoretical techniques and experimental viability have resulted in a flurry of research activity over the last decade or so. In this review we explore the non equilibrium aspects of one dimensional systems which are integrable. Through a number of illustrative examples we discuss non equilibrium phenomena which arise in such models, the role played by integrability and the consequences these have for more generic systems.

Abstract:We review investigations on defects in systems described by real scalar fields in (D,1) space-time dimensions. We first work in one spatial dimension, with models described by one and two real scalar fields, and in higher dimensions. We show that when the potential assumes specific form, there are models which support stable global defects for D arbitrary. We also show how to find first-order differential equations that solve the equations of motion, and how to solve models in D dimensions via soluble problems in D=1. We illustrate the procedure examining specific models and showing how they may be used in applications in different contexts in condensed matter physics, and in other areas.

Integrable RG Flows on Topological Defect Lines in 2D Conformal Field Theories

Abstract:Topological defect lines (TDLs) in two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) are standard examples of generalized symmetries in quantum field theory. Integrable lattice incarnations of these TDLs, such as those provided by spin/anyonic chains, provide a crucial playground to investigate their properties, both analytically and numerically. Here, a family of parameter-dependent integrable lattice models is presented, which realize different TDLs in a given CFT as the parameter is varied. These models are based on the general quantum-inverse scattering construction, and involve inhomogeneities of the spectral parameter. Both defect hamiltonians and (defect) line operators are obtained in closed form. By varying the inhomogeneities, renormalization group flows between different TDLs (such as the Verlinde lines associated with the Virasoro primaries $(1,s)$ and $(s,1)$ in diagonal minimal CFTs) are then studied using different aspects of the Bethe-ansatz as well as ab-initio numerical techniques. Relationships with the anisotropic Kondo model as well as its non-Hermitian version are briefly discussed

Topological Defects on the Lattice: Dualities and Degeneracies

Abstract:We construct topological defects in two-dimensional classical lattice models and quantum chains. The defects satisfy local commutation relations guaranteeing that the partition function is independent of their path. These relations and their solutions are extended to allow defect lines to fuse, branch and satisfy all the properties of a fusion category. We show how the two-dimensional classical lattice models and their topological defects are naturally described by boundary conditions of a Turaev-Viro-Barrett-Westbury partition function. These defects allow Kramers-Wannier duality to be generalized to a large class of models, explaining exact degeneracies between non-symmetry-related ground states as well as in the low-energy spectrum. They give a precise and general notion of twisted boundary conditions and the universal behaviour under Dehn twists. Gluing a topological defect to a boundary yields linear identities between partition functions with different boundary conditions, allowing ratios of the universal g-factor to be computed exactly on the lattice. We develop this construction in detail in a variety of examples, including the Potts, parafermion and height models.

Topological Defects on the Lattice I: The Ising model

Abstract:In this paper and its sequel, we construct topologically invariant defects in two-dimensional classical lattice models and quantum spin chains. We show how defect lines commute with the transfer matrix/Hamiltonian when they obey the defect commutation relations, cousins of the Yang-Baxter equation. These relations and their solutions can be extended to allow defect lines to branch and fuse, again with properties depending only on topology. In this part I, we focus on the simplest example, the Ising model. We define lattice spin-flip and duality defects and their branching, and prove they are topological. One useful consequence is a simple implementation of Kramers-Wannier duality on the torus and higher genus surfaces by using the fusion of duality defects. We use these topological defects to do simple calculations that yield exact properties of the conformal field theory describing the continuum limit. For example, the shift in momentum quantization with duality-twisted boundary conditions yields the conformal spin 1/16 of the chiral spin field. Even more strikingly, we derive the modular transformation matrices explicitly and exactly.

$U(1)$ Defects on Domain Lines

Abstract:Based on recent experimental results, we give field-theoretic description of $U(1)$ defects localized on the domain lines on thin films. We describe topology of our model and solve this model in the adiabatic approximation. It turns out that such a model naturally provides periodic structure observed in experiment. The effective theory turns out to be the sine-Gordon model, but unlike the previous theoretical considerations we argue that in this case it is favorable for sine-Gordon kinks to merge into one defect with a uniform winding. We consider a system of adjacent domain lines and anti-lines and explain the experimental fact that the appearance of defects on a domain line prevents defect creation on the adjacent anti-lines. We also quantize the model and investigate possible effects of finite transverse dimension of the film.

Non-Invertible Defects in Nonlinear Sigma Models and Coupling to Topological Orders

Abstract:Nonlinear sigma models appear in a wide variety of physics contexts, such as the long-range order with spontaneously broken continuous global symmetries. There are also large classes of quantum criticality admit sigma model descriptions in their phase diagrams without known ultraviolet complete quantum field theory descriptions. We investigate defects in general nonlinear sigma models in any spacetime dimensions, which include the "electric" defects that are characterized by topological interactions on the defects, and the "magnetic" defects that are characterized by the isometries and homotopy groups. We use an analogue of the charge-flux attachment to show that the magnetic defects are in general non-invertible, and the electric and magnetic defects form junctions that combine defects of different dimensions into analogues of higher-group symmetry. We explore generalizations that couple nonlinear sigma models to topological quantum field theories by defect attachment, which modifies the non-invertible fusion and braiding of the defects. We discuss several applications, including constraints on energy scales and scenarios of low energy dynamics with spontaneous symmetry breaking in gauge theories, and axion gauge theories.

Exploring Non-Invertible Symmetries in Free Theories

Abstract:Symmetries corresponding to local transformations of the fundamental fields that leave the action invariant give rise to (invertible) topological defects, which obey group-like fusion rules. One can construct more general (codimension-one) topological defects by specifying a map between gauge-invariant operators from one side of the defect and such operators on the other side. In this work, we apply such construction to Maxwell theory in four dimensions and to the free compact scalar theory in two dimensions. In the case of Maxwell theory, we show that a topological defect that mixes the field strength $F$ and its Hodge dual $\star F$ can be at most an $SO(2)$ rotation. For rational values of the bulk coupling and the $\theta$-angle we find an explicit defect Lagrangian that realizes values of the $SO(2)$ angle $\varphi$ such that $\cos \varphi$ is also rational. We further determine the action of such defects on Wilson and 't Hooft lines and show that they are in general non-invertible. We repeat the analysis for the free compact scalar $\phi$ in two dimensions. In this case we find only four discrete maps: the trivial one, a $Z_2$ map $d\phi \rightarrow -d\phi$, a $\mathcal{T}$-duality-like map $d\phi \rightarrow i \star d\phi$, and the product of the last two.

Quantum Hall fluids in the presence of topological defects

Abstract:We review our recent results on the physics of quantum Hall fluids at Jain and non conventional fillings within a general field theoretic framework. We focus on a peculiar conformal field theory (CFT), the one obtained by means of the m-reduction technique, and stress its power in describing strongly correlated low dimensional condensed matter systems in the presence of localized impurities or topological defects. By exploiting the notion of Morita equivalence for field theories on noncommutative two-tori and choosing rational values of the noncommutativity parameter, we find a general one-to-one correspondence between the m-reduced conformal field theory describing the quantum Hall fluid and an Abelian noncommutative field theory. As an example of application of the formalism, we study a quantum Hall bilayer at nonconventional fillings in the presence of a localized topological defect and briefly recall its boundary state structure corresponding to two different boundary conditions, the periodic as well as the twisted boundary conditions respectively, which give rise to different topological sectors on a torus. Then we introduce generalized magnetic translation operators as tensor products, which act on the quantum Hall fluid and defect space respectively, and compute their action on the boundary partition functions: in this way their role as boundary condition changing operators is fully evidenced. From such results we infer the general structure of generalized magnetic translations in our model and clarify the deep relation between noncommutativity and non-Abelian statistics of quasi-hole excitations, which is crucial for physical implementations of topological quantum computing.
