Abstract:The results of a series of model tests are presented to study the performance of stone column reinforced soft soil subjected to cyclic loading under partially drained condition. The influences of the cyclic stress ratio, confining pressure and multi-stage loading were considered. Variations of axial strain, total stress, and pore water pressure were monitored and analysed. The results demonstrated that stone column could markedly reduce soil settlement under cyclic loading compared to soil untreated or improved with vertical drains. However, a threshold of cyclic stress ratio exists beyond which failure occurs quickly. The results indicated that substantial excess pore pressure was generated and then dissipated in the surrounding soil, while a small negative pore pressure was observed in the column. The stress acting on the column increased as the cyclic stress ratio increased, while the stress on the clay subgrade remained relatively unchanged. The failed models were associated with significant bulging or even bending, whereas the stable ones retained a quasi-cylindrical shape. Moreover, rest periods during multi-stage cyclic loading increased the overall resistance and reduced the peak excess pore pressure, thus the unit cell could withstand a higher cyclic stress ratio. The comparison with undrained tests in the literature implied that the threshold of cyclic stress ratio was independent of the drainage condition. At an early stage of cyclic loading, the partially drained condition clearly reduced the generated pore pressure compared to the case of undrained tests.
