Abstract:The concept of multi-principal component has created promising opportunities for the development of novel high-entropy ceramics (HEC) for extreme environments encountered in advanced turbine engines, nuclear reactors, and hypersonic vehicles, as it expands the compositional space of ceramic materials with tailored properties within a single-phase solution. Some unique physical properties of HECs, such as higher hardness, high-temperature strength, lower thermal conductivity, and improved irradiation resistance than the constitute ceramics, have been observed. The promising properties of HECs are attributed to the compositional complexity, atomic-level disorder, lattice distortion, and other fundamental processes related to defect formation and phonon scattering. This manuscript serves as a critical review of the recent progress in high-entropy carbides and borides, focusing on synthesis and evaluations of their performance in extreme high-temperature, irradiation, and gaseous environments.

Abstract:Compositionally complex materials have demonstrated extraordinary promise for structural robustness in extreme environments. Of these, the most commonly thought of are high entropy alloys, where chemical complexity grants uncommon combinations of hardness, ductility, and thermal resilience. In contrast to these metal-metal bonded systems, the addition of ionic and covalent bonding has led to the discovery of high entropy ceramics. These materials also possess outstanding structural, thermal, and chemical robustness but with a far greater variety of functional properties which enable access to continuously controllable magnetic, electronic, and optical phenomena. In this perspective, we outline the potential for high entropy ceramics in functional applications under extreme environments, where intrinsic stability may provide a new path toward inherently hardened device design. Current works on high entropy carbides, actinide bearing ceramics, and high entropy oxides are reviewed in the areas of radiation, high temperature, and corrosion tolerance where the role of local disorder is shown to create pathways toward self-healing and structural robustness. In this context, new strategies for creating future electronic, magnetic, and optical devices to be operated in harsh environments are outlined.

High-Entropy Metal Diborides: A New Class of High-Entropy Materials and a New Type of Ultrahigh Temperature Ceramics

Abstract:Seven equimolar, five-component, metal diborides were fabricated via high-energy ball milling and spark plasma sintering. Six of them, including (Hf0.2Zr0.2Ta0.2Nb0.2Ti0.2)B2, (Hf0.2Zr0.2Ta0.2Mo0.2Ti0.2)B2, (Hf0.2Zr0.2Mo0.2Nb0.2Ti0.2)B2, (Hf0.2Mo0.2Ta0.2Nb0.2Ti0.2)B2, (Mo0.2Zr0.2Ta0.2Nb0.2Ti0.2)B2, and (Hf0.2Zr0.2Ta0.2Cr0.2Ti0.2)B2, possess virtually one solid-solution boride phase of the hexagonal AlB2 structure. Revised Hume-Rothery size-difference factors are used to rationalize the formation of high-entropy solid solutions in these metal diborides. Greater than 92% of the theoretical densities have been generally achieved with largely uniform compositions from nanoscale to microscale. Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC STEM), with high-angle annular dark-field and annular bright-field (HAADF and ABF) imaging and nanoscale compositional mapping, has been conducted to confirm the formation of 2-D high-entropy metal layers, separated by rigid 2-D boron nets, without any detectable layered segregation along the c-axis. These materials represent a new type of ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs) as well as a new class of high-entropy materials, which not only exemplify the first high-entropy non-oxide ceramics (borides) fabricated but also possess a unique non-cubic (hexagonal) and layered (quasi-2D) high-entropy crystal structure that markedly differs from all those reported in prior studies. Initial property assessments show that both the hardness and the oxidation resistance of these high-entropy metal diborides are generally higher/better than the average performances of five individual metal diborides made by identical fabrication processing.

Abstract:High-entropy materials often outperform their lower-entropy relatives in various aspects, such as thermal stability and fracture toughness. While there are extensive research activities in the field of high-entropy alloys, comparably little is performed for high-entropy ceramics, and especially for high-entropy diborides. Here we show, that not only the hardness of ZrB2 layers can be improved from 43.2±1.0GPa to 45.8±1.0GPa to 47.2±1.8GPa through the formation of solid solution ternary diborides (Zr0.61Ti0.39B2) and high-entropy diborides (Zr0.23Ti0.20Hf0.19V0.14Ta0.24B2), respectively, but especially their thermal stability against structural rearrangements and decomposition towards the constituting binary diborides.

Abstract:Abstract Ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs) are generally referred to the carbides, nitrides, and borides of the transition metals, with the Group IVB compounds (Zr & Hf) and TaC as the main focus. The UHTCs are endowed with ultra-high melting points, excellent mechanical properties, and ablation resistance at elevated temperatures. These unique combinations of properties make them promising materials for extremely environmental structural applications in rocket and hypersonic vehicles, particularly nozzles, leading edges, and engine components, etc. In addition to bulk UHTCs, UHTC coatings and fiber reinforced UHTC composites are extensively developed and applied to avoid the intrinsic brittleness and poor thermal shock resistance of bulk ceramics. Recently, highentropy UHTCs are developed rapidly and attract a lot of attention as an emerging direction for ultra-high temperature materials. This review presents the state of the art of processing approaches, microstructure design and properties of UHTCs from bulk materials to composites and coatings, as well as the future directions.

Abstract:High-entropy ceramics, a novel class of single-phase ceramic solid solutions consisting of near-equimolar multielement species, are recently attracting tremendous attentions. Especially, the transition metal non-oxide high-entropy ceramics, such as transition metal carbide and boride high-entropy ceramics, have been proposed for potential applications in aerospace, nuclear energy, high-speed machining and many other extreme environments, owing to their excellent physical and chemical properties including super-high hardness, low thermal conductivity, good oxidation resistance and corrosion/erosion resistance. Recently, the research of high-entropy ceramics is only focused on composition design, fabrication methods, single-phase stability and mechanical properties, but the design criterion and theoretical analysis are rarely reported. Based on the researches of high-entropy alloy, the fabrication, characterization and theoretical study of several transition metal non-oxide high-entropy ceramics are summarized, along with some related results of high-entropy film. The prospects for the future developments of high-entropy ceramics are also discussed.

Abstract:This work reviews the recent development of High Entropy Ceramics (HEC), which have five or more elements combined in equimolar or near equimolar quantities and have demonstrated unique properties. The comprehensive review is based on the general classifications of high entropy ceramics into carbides, borides, oxides, and other ceramic compounds. For each class of HECs, the synthesis processes, microstructure, and mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties are summarized in detail, with property data tables. Additionally, the fabrication and properties of HEC in the form of film, coatings, and composites are discussed. In addition to these material properties, this review article also highlights the utilization of computational studies and machine learning (ML) in the discovery of high entropy carbides. Finally, the overall conclusion of the current status and future research direction are discussed.

Abstract:Bulk equiatomic (Hf-Ta-Zr-Ti)C and (Hf-Ta-Zr-Nb)C high entropy Ultra-High Temperature Ceramic (UHTC) carbide compositions were fabricated by ball milling and Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). It was found that the lattice parameter mismatch of the component monocarbides is a key factor for predicting single phase solid solution formation. The processing route was further optimised for the (Hf-Ta-Zr-Nb)C composition to produce a high purity, single phase, homogeneous, bulk high entropy material (99% density); revealing a vast new compositional space for the exploration of new UHTCs. One sample was observed to chemically decompose; indicating the presence of a miscibility gap. While this suggests the system is not thermodynamically stable to room temperature, it does reveal further potential for the development of new in situ formed UHTC nanocomposites. The optimised material was subjected to nanoindentation testing and directly compared to the constituent mono/binary carbides, revealing a significantly enhanced hardness (36.1 ± 1.6 GPa,) compared to the hardest monocarbide (HfC, 31.5 ± 1.3 GPa) and the binary (Hf-Ta)C (32.9 ± 1.8 GPa).

Fermi Level Engineering and Mechanical Properties of High Entropy Carbides

Abstract:Fermi level engineering and mechanical properties evolution in high entropy carbides are investigated by theoretical and experimental means. Massive elemental diversity in high entropy ceramics broadens the compositional space but imposes great challenges in composition selection and property investigation. We have utilized the valence electron concentration (VEC) descriptor to design and predict properties of high entropy carbides. The VEC regulates the Fermi energy and systematically alters the bonding characteristics of materials. As a result, mechanical properties evolve as function of the VEC. At VEC 8.4, the strong {\sigma} bonding states stem from filled overlapping metal d and carbon p orbitals, which results in maximum resistance to shear deformation and highest hardness. Beyond or below the optimum VEC point of 8.4, mechanical response degrades due to filling or emptying of energy orbitals that facilitates shear deformation. Furthermore, the optimum VEC point can shift based on the constituent metals that formulate the high entropy carbide. Our analyses demonstrate strong correlation between calculated hardness and shear modulus. As an experimental complement, a set of high entropy carbides are synthesized, and mechanical properties investigated. The measured hardness follows theoretical predictions and the highest hardness of ~30 GPa is achieved at VEC 8.4. In contrast, hardness decreases by 50% when VEC is 9.4. Designing high entropy carbides based on VEC and understanding mechanical properties at an electronic level enables one to manipulate the composition spectrum to procure a desired mechanical response from a chemically disordered crystal.

Abstract:High mechanical load‐carrying capability and thermal insulating performance are crucial to thermal‐insulation materials under extreme conditions. However, these features are often difficult to achieve simultaneously in conventional porous ceramics. Here, for the first time, we report a multiscale structure design and fast fabrication of 9‐cation porous high‐entropy diboride ceramics via an ultrafast high‐temperature synthesis technique that can lead to exceptional mechanical load‐bearing capability and high thermal insulation performance. With the construction of multiscale structures involving ultrafine pores at the microscale, high‐quality interfaces between building blocks at the nanoscale, and severe lattice distortion at the atomic scale, our materials with a ∼50% porosity exhibit an ultrahigh compressive strength of up to ∼337 MPa at room temperature and a thermal conductivity as low as ∼0.76 W m−1 K−1. More importantly, they demonstrate exceptional thermal stability, with merely ∼2.4% volume shrinkage after 2000°C annealing. They also show an ultrahigh compressive strength of ∼690 MPa up to 2000°C, displaying a ductile compressive behavior. The excellent mechanical and thermal insulating properties offer an attractive material for reliable thermal insulation under extreme conditions. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:High-entropy borides are deemed robust candidates because of their complex combination of entropy-driven, multi-component disordered solid solutions. They are particularly remarkable for their unique single-crystal structures and significant bandgap. This structural adaptability positions them uniquely among materials, setting them apart from conventional transition metal diborides. Researchers have been fascinated by the appeal of high-entropy borides for a long time, driven by the groundbreaking idea of 'High entropy ceramics'. Nevertheless, the lack of thorough review papers in this field has hindered the progress of creating strong and durable high-entropy borides. This paper proposes adopting a collaborative strategy to properly negotiate this unexplored region. This perspective covers the up-to-date research on successfully synthesized high-entropy boride complexes. It examines compositional strategies, historical backgrounds, structural complexity, fabrication methods, mechanical, thermal, and oxidation properties, as well as emergent properties with potential uses, pathways, and future possibilities. This attempt challenges materials science traditions by introducing novel materials with superior performance.

Abstract:Due to their huge composition space and superior performance characteristics, high entropy borides have garnered great interest in many fields, particularly where their high-temperature performances at high temperatures are critical. Herein, we first discovered that dense (Ti 1/9 Zr 1/9 Hf 1/9 Nb 1/9 Ta 1/9 V 1/9 Cr 1/9 Mo 1/9 W 1/9 )B 2 (HEB9) ceramics prepared at 1850°C showed an exceptionally low temperature coefficient of electrical resistivity (4.28×10 -4 K -1 ), which is nearly an order of magnitude lower than those of (Ti 1/5 Zr 1/5 Hf 1/5 Nb 1/5 Ta 1/5 )B 2 (HEB5), and previously reported ZrB 2 and ZrB 2 -30vol% SiC ceramics. Their mechanical, thermophysical properties at elevated temperatures were also investigated systematically. Although the thermal conductivity of HEB9 increased with elevated temperatures, it remained at a very low level (∼29 W/(m·K)) at 1273 K, nearly half that of HEB5. Moreover, HEB9 exhibited a geometrically necessary dislocation density over 30 times greater than HEB5, likely contributing to its higher Vickers hardness and unique physical properties. Notably, the flexural strength in HEB9 at 1600°C was even improved to 650.0 ± 86.3 MPa, compared to the value (559.7 ± 36.7 MPa) at room temperature without degradation. which was comparable to that of HEB5, although thermodynamic calculations indicated a lower melting point of HEB9 and grain boundary softening was occurred in HEB9 at high temperature. The excellent mechanical, electrical and thermophysical properties of HEB9 at elevated temperatures make it a competitive candidate for various high-temperature applications.

Abstract:Abstract High-entropy ceramics (HECs) are solid solutions of inorganic compounds with one or more Wyckoff sites shared by equal or near-equal atomic ratios of multi-principal elements. Although in the infant stage, the emerging of this new family of materials has brought new opportunities for material design and property tailoring. Distinct from metals, the diversity in crystal structure and electronic structure of ceramics provides huge space for properties tuning through band structure engineering and phonon engineering. Aside from strengthening, hardening, and low thermal conductivity that have already been found in high-entropy alloys, new properties like colossal dielectric constant, super ionic conductivity, severe anisotropic thermal expansion coefficient, strong electromagnetic wave absorption, etc., have been discovered in HECs. As a response to the rapid development in this nascent field, this article gives a comprehensive review on the structure features, theoretical methods for stability and property prediction, processing routes, novel properties, and prospective applications of HECs. The challenges on processing, characterization, and property predictions are also emphasized. Finally, future directions for new material exploration, novel processing, fundamental understanding, in-depth characterization, and database assessments are given.

Abstract:High-entropy carbide ceramics have attracted extensive attentions for potential applications as high temperature structural materials, the mechanical and tribological performance of (TiNbTaWMo)C high-entropy carbides over wide temperature range combined with the oxidation behavior were investigated in the present study. (TiNbTaWMo)C high-entropy carbides were successfully prepared from five kinds of carbide powders by spark plasma sintering at 2000 °C. The mechanical properties of (TiNbTaWMo)C and the tribological performance at room temperature –800 °C were studied. The Vickers hardness, bending strength and fracture toughness of the sintered (TiNbTaWMo)C high-entropy carbides are 21.31 ± 0.43 GPa, 477.15 ± 34.17 MPa, and 6.41 ± 0.85 MPa m 1/2 , respectively. At room temperature, the friction coefficient is stable at 0.35, and the wear rate is as low as 3.39 × 10 −7 mm 3 /Nm. With temperature increasing, friction coefficient increases firstly and decreases above 600 °C, which is contributed by the formation of oxide films at high temperatures. The wear mechanisms of (TiNbTaWMo)C high-entropy ceramics at different temperatures were discussed in detail by microstructures and phase analysis of the worn surfaces together with the oxidation behaviors of (TiNbTaWMo)C at 600 °C and 800 °C.

Abstract:As the high-entropy design concept applied to the diboride ceramic system, high-entropy diboride ceramics with a wide range of composition control, is expected to become a new high-performance material for extreme high-temperature environments. Herein, the effects of four transition metal elements (Nb, Ti, Cr, W) on the phase stability and properties of (Hf, Zr, Ta)B 2 -based high-entropy diboride ceramics are systematically investigated via the first-principles calculations. All components were identified as thermodynamically, mechanically and dynamically stable from enthalpy of formation, elastic and phonon spectrum calculations. Among these, compared with the (Hf, Zr, Ta)B 2 ceramics, the addition of Nb and Ti on the metal sublattice is beneficial to improve the mechanical properties of ceramics, including Young's modulus , hardness and fracture toughness, while the introduction of Cr and W weakens the strength of covalently and ionic bonds inside the material, reducing its mechanical properties. The predicted thermophysical properties show that the high-entropy diboride ceramics containing Nb and Ti have better high-temperature comprehensive performance, including higher Debye temperature, thermal conductivity and lower thermal expansion characteristics, which is conducive to the application in extreme high-temperature environments. This research will provide important guidance for the design and development of new high-performance high-entropy diboride ceramics.

Abstract:Several diborides, carbides and nitrides of the group IVB and VB transition metals are a family of materials known as ultrahigh temperature ceramics based on melting temperatures in excess of 3000°C. In recent years, hafnium and zirconium borides in ultrahigh temperature ceramics have attracted increasing attention from material scientists and engineers due to their unique combination of high melting point, high strength, high electrical and thermal conductivities, excellent corrosion resistance, and good oxidation resistance. These properties make the ultrahigh temperature ceramics promising candidates for high–temperature applications, including thermal protective structures for leading–edge parts on hypersonic re–entry space vehicles, propulsion systems, furnace elements, refractory crucibles, and plasma–arc electrodes.

Abstract:Transition metal diborides are an important component of ultra-high temperature ceramics with particularly attractive high-temperature performance. In order to promote the application of borides in the field of high-temperature protection, a single-phase (Ti,Zr,Hf)B 2 solid solution was synthesized, inspired by the concept of high-entropy effect. The mechanical, thermal conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient of (Ti,Zr,Hf)B 2 ceramics were analyzed by experiments and First-principles calculations. Even compared with currently existing high-entropy diborides, the single-phase (Ti,Zr,Hf)B 2 showed a higher Vicker hardness (30.22 ± 2.43 GPa). Furthermore, it possessed lower thermal conductivity (7.2–11.0 W·m −1 ·K −1 ) at 25–1000 °C and higher thermal expansion coefficient (8.7 ×10 −6 K −1 ) at 25–1100 °C than transition metal diborides (TiB 2 , ZrB 2 , HfB 2 ). The high-temperature oxidation behavior of (Ti,Zr,Hf)B 2 ceramics was also investigated at 1000–1400 °C in air for 3 h. In this study, we provided a new strategy for designing transition diboride solid solutions.

Abstract:AbstractRevealing the hardening mechanisms is crucial for facilitating the design of superhard high‐entropy borides. Taking high‐entropy diborides (HEB2) as the prototype, the hardening mechanisms of high‐entropy borides are thoroughly investigated. Specifically, the equiatomic 4—9‐cation single‐phase HEB2 ceramics (4—9HEB2) are fabricated by an ultra‐fast high‐temperature sintering method. The experimental results show that the hardness of the as‐fabricated 4—9HEB2 samples has an increasing tendency with the increase of metal components. With a combination of first‐principles calculations, machine‐learning‐potential‐based molecular dynamics simulations, and scanning transmission electron microscopy characterizations, lattice distortion is explicitly identified to be essential in hardening HEB2 by increasing strain field fluctuation, enlarging atomic strain energy, and strengthening B─B bonds. The results unravel the hardening mechanisms of HEB2 by intensifying lattice distortion, providing fascinating guidance for developing superhard high‐entropy borides.

Abstract:High entropy diborides are new categories of ultra-high temperature ceramics, which are believed promising candidates for applications in hypersonic vehicles. However, knowledge on high temperature thermal and mechanical properties of high entropy diborides is still lacking unit now. In this work, variations of thermal and elastic properties of high entropy (Ti0.2Zr0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2)B2 with respect to temperature were predicted by molecular dynamics simulations. Firstly, a deep learning potential for Ti-Zr-Hf-Nb-Ta-B diboride system was fitted with its prediction error in energy and force respectively being 9.2 meV/atom and 208 meV/Å, in comparison with first-principles calculations. Then, temperature dependent lattice constants, anisotropic thermal expansions, anisotropic phonon thermal conductivities, and elastic properties of high entropy (Ti0.2Zr0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2)B2 from 0 °C to 2400 °C were evaluated, where the predicted room temperature values agree well with experimental measurements. In addition, intrinsic lattice distortions of (Ti0.2Zr0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2)B2 were analyzed by displacements of atoms from their ideal positions, which are in an order of 10-3 Å and one order of magnitude smaller than those in (Ti0.2Zr0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2)C. It indicates that lattice distortions in (Ti0.2Zr0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2)B2 is not so severe as expected. With the new paradigm of machine learning potential, deep insight into high entropy materials can be achieved in the future, since the chemical and structural complexly in high entropy materials can be well handled by machine learning potential.
