Abstract:We study the long-range correlations of DNA sequences using two-dimensional (2D) DNA walk model by considering pairs of sequential nucleotides. In this model, the effects of second-order correlation of DNA sequences on long-range correlations are considered. Some linear correlations are obtained in the double logarithmic plots of the mean square distance 〈R2(l)〉 and fluctuation F(l) versus nucleotide distance l along the DNA chain. It is found that 〈R2(l)〉 and F(l) may be expressed as〈R2(l)〉∼lγF(l)∼lHThe power spectrums of several sequential nucleotide pairs are also studied, and these curves are flat and hardly changed when the frequency f<10−1. Comparing with the other 12 curves of different sequential nucleotide pairs (i.e. AT, AC, AG, CA, CG, CT, GA, GC, GT, TA, TC, and TG), we find that GG, CC, TT and AA decrease obviously in the region of high frequency (f>0.15 bp−1). There is a notable peak value, which occurs at a frequency of 0.333 for coding DNA sequences, while the same peak value is not obtained for non-coding DNA sequences. The autocorrelation function C(l) is also calculated. Each curve of the double logarithmic plot has an almost linear correlation in the low value l region, especially in Escherichia coli genomic DNA. For non-coding DNA sequence, the curves have no-linear tails when l>2.0×104.

Abstract:The characterization of long-ran.-e correlations and fractal properties of DNA sequences has proved to be a difficult though rewarding task mainly due to the mosaic character of DNA consisting of many patches of various lengths with different nucleotide constitutions. In this paper we investigate statistical correlations among different positions in DNA sequences using the two-dimensional DNA walk. The root-mean-square fluctuation F(l) is described by a power law. The autocorrelation function C(l), which is used to measure the linear dependence and periodicity, exists a power law of C(l) - l(-mu). We also calculate the mean-square distance <R2-(l)> along the DNA chain, and it may be expressed as <R-2(l)> - l(r) with 2 > gamma > 1. Our investigations can provide some insights into long-range correlations in DNA sequences.

Abstract:Infrared spectroscopy has emerged as a premier experimental technique to probe enigmatic effects arising from strong correlations in solids. Here we report on recent advances in this area focusing on common patterns in correlated electron systems including transition metal oxides, intermetallics and organic conductors. All these materials are highly conducting substances but their electrodynamic response is profoundly different from the canonical Drude behavior observed in simple metals. These unconventional properties can be attributed in several cases to the formation of spin and/or charge ordered states, zero temperature phase transitions and strong coupling to bosonic modes.

Long-range Correlation Properties in Bacteria DNA Sequence

Abstract:In order to explore the long range correlation properties of DNA sequences in a further step, some parametric methods are introduced to characterize the self similarity of DNA sequences. Compared with Fourier analysis, these methods perform statistically more stable and yield more reliable results. Using these methods, eight whole genomes of bacteria are analyzed. Long range correlation properties in the nucleotide density distribution along these DNA sequences are explored. Estimation results show that the long range correlation structure prevails through the entire molecule of DNA. Higher order statistics through coarse grain reveal that rather than multi fractal, there are only mono fractal phenomena presented in the sequences. Hence, the nucleotide density distribution can be modeled asymptotically as fractional Gaussian noise. This result brings about a new direction for analyzing and understanding the intrinsic structures of DNA sequences.
Long-range interacting systems are locally non-interacting

Abstract:Enhanced experimental capabilities to control nonlocal and power-law decaying interactions are currently fuelling intense research in the domain of quantum many-body physics. Compared to their counterparts with short-ranged interactions, long-range interacting systems display novel physics, such as nonlinear light cones for the propagation of information or inequivalent thermodynamic ensembles. In this work, we consider generic long-range open quantum systems in arbitrary dimensions and focus on the so-called strong long-range regime. We prove that in the thermodynamic limit local properties, captured by reduced quantum states, are described by an emergent non-interacting theory. Here, the dynamics factorizes and the individual constituents of the system evolve independently such that no correlations are generated over time. In this sense, long-range interacting systems are locally non-interacting. This has significant implications for their relaxation behavior, for instance in relation to the emergence of long-lived quasi-stationary states or to the absence of thermalization.

Abstract:We consider force-induced unzipping transition for a heterogeneous DNA model with a long-range correlated base-sequence. It is shown that as compared to the uncorrelated situation, long-range correlations smear the unzipping phase-transition, change its universality class and lead to non-self-averaging: the averaged behavior strongly differs from the typical ones. Several basic scenarios for this typical behavior are revealed and explained. The results can be relevant for explaining the biological purpose of long-range correlations in DNA.

Abstract:We study one-dimensional systems with random diagonal disorder but off-diagonal short-range correlations imposed by structural constraints. We find that these correlations generate effective conduction channels for finite systems. At a certain golden correlation condition for the hopping amplitudes, we find an extended state for an infinite system. Our model has important implications to charge transport in DNA molecules, and a possible set of experiments in semiconductor superlattices is proposed to verify our most interesting theoretical predictions.

Spread of correlations in long-range interacting quantum systems

Abstract:The non-equilibrium response of a quantum many-body system defines its fundamental transport properties and how initially localized quantum information spreads. However, for long-range-interacting quantum systems little is known. We address this issue by analyzing a local quantum quench in the long-range Ising model in a transverse field, where interactions decay as a variable power-law with distance $\propto r^{-\alpha}$, $\alpha>0$. Using complementary numerical and analytical techniques, we identify three dynamical regimes: short-range-like with an emerging light cone for $\alpha>2$; weakly long-range for $1<\alpha<2$ without a clear light cone but with a finite propagation speed of almost all excitations; and fully non-local for $\alpha<1$ with instantaneous transmission of correlations. This last regime breaks generalized Lieb--Robinson bounds and thus locality. Numerical calculation of the entanglement spectrum demonstrates that the usual picture of propagating quasi-particles remains valid, allowing an intuitive interpretation of our findings via divergences of quasi-particle velocities. Our results may be tested in state-of-the-art trapped-ion experiments.

Abstract:Employing large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we systematically compute the energy spectra of the two-dimensional (2D) spin-1/2 Heisenberg model with long-range interactions. With the 1/rα ferromagnetic and staggered antiferromagnetic interactions, we find the explicit range in α for the short-range Goldstone-type (gapless), anomalous Goldstone-type (gapless), and Higgs-type (gapped) spectra. Accompanied by the spin-wave analysis, our numerical results vividly reveal how the long-range interactions alter the usual linear and quadratic magnon dispersions in 2D quantum magnets and give rise to anomalous dynamical exponents. Moreover, we find the explicit case where the gapped excitation emerges at a noninteger decay exponent α for the antiferromagnetic Hamiltonian. This work provides the first set of unbiased dynamical data of long-range quantum many-body systems and suggests that many universally accepted low-energy customs for short-range systems need to be substantially modified for long-range ones, which are of immediate relevance to the ongoing experimental efforts from quantum simulators to 2D quantum moiré materials. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevResearch.5.033046 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. The non-classical regime of the two-dimensional long-range XY model: a comprehensive Monte Carlo study

Abstract:The interplay between short-range (SR) and long-range (LR) universal behaviors remains a fundamental topic in studying long-range interacting systems. The interaction between LR coupling and the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) mechanism introduces significant complexity, especially in the two-dimensional (2D) XY model, which is crucial for exploring low-dimensional phenomena and their implications for quantum computation. In the paper [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2404.08498" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2404.08498">arXiv:2404.08498</a>], we investigated the 2D XY model with algebraically decaying interactions of the form $1/r^{2+\sigma}$. Our findings demonstrated continuous phase transitions into a ferromagnetic phase for $\sigma \leq 2$, characterized by the emergence of long-range order. In the ferromagnetic phase, for $\sigma<2$, we identified a power-law decaying correlation function attributed to the Goldstone mode, and for $\sigma=2$, logarithmic behaviors were observed. In this supplemental paper, we provide a comprehensive explanation of the detailed methodology, additional simulation results, and further insights into the above phenomena. It enhances our understanding of the crossover between SR and LR behaviors and has practical implications for experimental systems, such as Rydberg atom arrays.

Is there a correlation length in a model with long-range interactions?

Strongly Correlated Electrons

Abstract:Considering an example of the long-range Kitaev model, we are looking for a correlation length in a model with long range interactions whose correlation functions away from a critical point have power-law tails instead of the usual exponential decay. It turns out that quasiparticle spectrum depends on a distance from the critical point in a way that allows to identify the standard correlation length exponent, $\nu$. The exponent implicitly defines a correlation length $\xi$ that diverges when the critical point is approached. We show that the correlation length manifests itself also in the correlation function but not in its exponential tail because there is none. Instead $\xi$ is a distance that marks a crossover between two different algebraic decays with different exponents. At distances shorter than $\xi$ the correlator decays with the same power law as at the critical point while at distances longer than $\xi$ it decays faster, with a steeper power law. For this correlator it is possible to formulate the usual scaling hypothesis with $\xi$ playing the role of the scaling distance. The correlation length also leaves its mark on the subleading anomalous fermionic correlator but, interestingly, there is a regime of long range interactions where its short distance critical power-law decay is steeper than its long distance power law tail.
Coarsening in the Long-range Ising Model with Conserved Dynamics

Abstract:While the kinetics of domain growth, even for conserved order-parameter dynamics, is widely studied for short-range inter-particle interactions, systems having long-range interactions are receiving attention only recently. Here we present results, for such dynamics, from a Monte Carlo (MC) study of the two-dimensional long-range Ising model, with critical compositions of up and down spins. The order parameter in the MC simulations was conserved via the incorporation of the Kawasaki spin-exchange method. The simulation results for domain growth, following quenches of the homogeneous systems to temperatures below the critical values $T_c$, were analyzed via finite-size scaling and other advanced methods. The outcomes reveal that the growths follow power-laws, with the exponent having interesting dependence on the range of interaction. Quite interstingly, when the range is above a cut-off, the exponent, for any given range, changes from a larger value to a smaller one, during the evolution process. While the corresponding values at late times match with certain theoretical predictions for the conserved order-parameter dynamics, the ones at the early times appear surprisingly high, quite close to the theoretical values for the nonconserved case.

Statistics of systemwide correlations in the random-field XXZ chain: Importance of rare events in the many-body localized phase

Abstract:Motivated by recent debates around the many-body localization (MBL) problem, and in particular its stability against systemwide resonances, we investigate long-distance spin-spin correlations across the phase diagram of the random-field XXZ model, with a particular focus on the strong disorder regime. Building on state-of-the-art shift-invert diagonalization techniques, we study the high-energy behavior of transverse and longitudinal correlation functions, computed at the largest possible distance, for a broad range of disorder and interaction strengths. Our results show that while transverse correlations display a fairly stable exponential decay over the entire XXZ phase diagram, longitudinal correlations exhibit markedly different behavior, revealing distinct physical regimes. More precisely, we identify an intermediate disorder region where standard observables show well-converged MBL behavior [J. Colbois et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 133, 116502 (2024)] while the distributions of longitudinal correlations reveal unexpected fat-tails towards large values. These rare events strongly influence the average decay of longitudinal correlations, which we find to be algebraic in a broad region inside the supposed MBL phase, whereas the typical decay remains mostly exponential. At stronger disorder and weaker interactions, this intermediate regime is replaced by a more conventional exponential decay with short correlation lengths for both typical and average correlators, as expected for standard localization. Our findings shed light on the systemwide instabilities and raise important questions about the impact of such rare but large long-range correlations on the stability of the MBL phase. Finally, we discuss the possible fate of the intermediate region in the context of recent perspectives in the field.

Abstract:Interacting quantum spin models are remarkably useful for describing different types of physical, chemical, and biological systems. Significant understanding of their equilibrium properties has been achieved to date, especially for the case of spin models with short-range couplings. However, progress towards the development of a comparable understanding in long-range interacting models, in particular out-of-equilibrium, remains limited. In a recent work, we proposed a semiclassical numerical method to study spin models, the discrete truncated Wigner approximation (DTWA), and demonstrated its capability to correctly capture the dynamics of one- and two-point correlations in one dimensional (1D) systems. Here we go one step forward and use the DTWA method to study the dynamics of correlations in 2D systems with many spins and different types of long-range couplings, in regimes where other numerical methods are generally unreliable. We compute spatial and time-dependent correlations for spin-couplings that decay with distance as a power-law and determine the velocity at which correlations propagate through the system. Sharp changes in the behavior of those velocities are found as a function of the power-law decay exponent. Our predictions are relevant for a broad range of systems including solid state materials, atom-photon systems and ultracold gases of polar molecules, trapped ions, Rydberg, and magnetic atoms. We validate the DTWA predictions for small 2D systems and 1D systems, but ultimately, in the spirt of quantum simulation, experiments will be needed to confirm our predictions for large 2D systems.

Abstract:In this article, addressing large $n$ systems, we report that in numerous systems hosting long and short range interactions, multiple correlation lengths may appear. The largest correlation lengths often monotonically increase with temperature and diverge in the high temperature limit. Notwithstanding, the magnitude of the correlations themselves decreases with increasing temperature. We examine correlation function in the presence of competing interactions of long and short ranges. The behavior of the correlation and modulation lengths as a function of temperature provides us with selection rules on the possible underlying microscopic interactions. As a concrete example of these notions, we consider the correlations in a system of screened Coulomb interactions coexisting with attractive short range interactions.
Emergent locality in systems with power-law interactions

Abstract:Locality imposes stringent constraints on the spreading of information in nonrelativistic quantum systems, which is reminiscent of a "light-cone," a casual structure arising in their relativistic counterparts. Long-range interactions can potentially soften such constraints, allowing almost instantaneous long jumps of particles, thus defying causality. Since interactions decaying as a power-law with distance, $r^{-\alpha}$, are ubiquitous in nature, it is pertinent to understand what is the fate of causality and information spreading in such systems. Using a numerically exact technique we address these questions by studying the out-of-time-order correlation function of a representative generic system in one-dimension. We show that while the interactions are long-range, their effect on information spreading is asymptotically negligible as long as $\alpha>1$. In this range we find a complex compound behavior, where after a short transient a fully local behavior emerges, yielding asymptotic "light-cones" virtually indistinguishable from "light-cones" in corresponding local models. The long-range nature of the interaction is only expressed in the power-law leaking of information from the "light-cone," with the same exponent as the exponent of the interaction, $\alpha$. Our results directly imply that all previously obtained rigorous bounds on information spreading in long-range interacting systems are not tight, and thus could be improved.
