Abstract:Five sympatric species of perennial pasture plants were studied in monospecific plots at an experimental site in the arid zone of southern Tunisia. For one year following establishment, irrigation was supplied monthly to test plots so as to complement natural precipitation and simulate an “optimum”; rain year (250 mm of precipitation occurring, evenly distributed, between September and April). In addition to hydrometric fluctuations in the upper soil layers, growth rate and phenological activity were monitored for all species (Cenchrus ciliaris, Digitaria commutata, Stipa lagascae (Poaceae), Argyrolobium uniflorum (Fabaceae) and Plantago albicans (Plantaginaceae)). Overall growth rate and foliar extension measurements revealed differential water use efficiency, phenology, and response to water stress in the species studied. C. ciliaris and D. commutata were the most efficient in their use of water. The former, a C4 grass species of paleo‐tropical origin, was primarily active in spring and autumn. D. commutata, along with the remaining three species, all of Mediterranean origin and of the C3 type, was active primarily in winter. Stipa lagascae and Argyrolobium uniflorum appear to belong to the “arido‐active”; group of drought‐tolerant plants, continuing to insure photosynthesis until soil water potential drops to below —5 MPa. However, their overall productivity was low as compared to the two arido‐passive species, Cenchrus ciliaris and Plantago albicans. The five species studied were thus complementary in their utilization of soil water supplies and their response to water shortages. Such information may serve in determining appropriate species mixtures and planting densities to be used for the restoration of self‐perpetuating pastoral ecosystems in the arid zones of North Africa.
Analysis of water and soil conservation techniques at the Ain Sefra arid watershed (Ksour Mountains, southwest Algeria)

Abstract:In Algeria, the arid steppe watershed currently suffers from serious environmental problems, including land degradation, poor water resource management, soil conservation, and land cover management. This situation is manifested by several events such as soil erosion, depletion of water resources, and loss of biodiversity, which are partly related to the acceleration of the soil degradation process. In order to improve the functioning of ecosystems in these watersheds, public authorities and farmers have undertaken restoration and protection efforts through land-use planning programs. The objective of this study is to test the stability, reliability, and anti-erosion effectiveness of these anti-erosion developments that currently exist on three sites, Sfissifa, Belguered, and Ain Sefra, in the face of the exceptional extreme rainfall events recorded especially in 2007-2008 (250 mm), both on cultivated land and in pasture and forest areas. We found that the traditional techniques generally used by farmers (terraces, stone cordons, toub walls, use of manure, cultivation in tanks and on ridges) have a great positive impact on water and soil conservation at the level of the cultivated plots. In addition, the modern techniques developed by the State (torrential correction, hill retention, reforestation) have proved to be very useful for water and soil conservation on a large scale, i.e., at the level of watersheds. This combination of these two types of development is almost indispensable to ensure a very positive impact on land productivity and the reduction of the risk of degradation.

Restoring Sahelian landscapes with people and plants: insights from large‐scale interventions

Abstract:Combining traditional knowledge on native plant species with scientific plant expertise has been established as a critical factor to improve success of restoration interventions, yet evidence on its incorporation across large scales and in Africa, is scant. Even less known are the effective socio‐economic benefits that communities have reaped from restoration activities. This article builds on Sacande and Berrahmouni's paper, further supported by both socio‐economic and biophysical data from large‐scale restoration activities in Senegal, Niger, and Nigeria in support of Africa's Great Green Wall. In total, over 90,000 village households were involved and 56,000 ha of degraded lands planted in 10 countries across the Sahel to initiate restoration in 5 years. Key findings suggest not only ecological benefits, but improvements in livelihoods and health, critical factors underpinning restoration success in the drylands. Results show the profound role native plants and other non‐timber forest products play in the lives and livelihoods of dryland communities. Between 2016 and 2020, 120 tons of seeds were collected from over 110 native plant species and planted in 10 countries, with ecological and economic benefits. Perceived food insecurity significantly decreased in 2020 compared to 2016 observations, declining sharply from 46 to 15% in project sites in Senegal, from 69 to 58% in Niger, and 90 to 25% in Nigeria. In Niger and Senegal, communities generated revenues from fodder species alone of 40 USD/ha per year. The UN decade for Ecosystem restoration 2021–2030 will be an important platform to expand such climate change adaptation and mitigation programs.

Abstract:This in-depth floristic study, conducted from 2019 to 2023 in nine temporary wetlands in the Guelma and Souk Ahras provinces, northeastern Algeria, aims to highlight the natural heritage of the region by analyzing the floristic composition in relation to environmental conditions. To achieve this goal, comprehensive inventories were conducted, revealing the presence of 317 species belonging to 64 botanical families and distributed across 204 genera. The plant diversity at each site was assessed using various biological indices, with a particular focus on the Taxonomic Distinctiveness Index (TDI) to determine the influence of environmental factors such as fires, altitude, overgrazing and agropastoral activities on biodiversity. The results highlighted the dominance of therophytes (43.22%) and the prevalence of the Mediterranean assemblage (66.25%). Moreover, 8.83% of the species were endemic, 1.89% were protected by Algerian legislation and 1.26% were listed on the IUCN Red List. The study identified Priority Conservation Zones (PCA) where the preservation of ponds, particularly MTG, TRC, BTH, and GZE, is crucial. Additionally, floristic and ecological boundaries between ponds were identified, highlighting marked biological similarities between certain pairs and notable isolations, particularly evident in the case of BTH with a significantly high TDI. These results underscore the critical importance of the studied region, emphasizing the need to integrate its floristic biodiversity into conservation efforts to enhance overall ecological integrity.

Abstract:Long‐term studies are needed to monitor recovery following restoration, as it may take decades or even centuries, particularly in the case of Mediterranean dry grasslands, for communities to reach their former equilibrium before the degradation occurred. A multi‐component approach is also needed to evaluate restoration success and better understand the complex impacts of former restoration projects on present‐day ecological interactions and ecosystem functions. The objective of this study was to address the restoration of a Mediterranean grassland in southern France, 20 years after implementation. Particularly, we examine the long‐term impact on soil, vegetation, and arthropods of the reintroduction of a dominant grass species (Brachypodium retusum) and the restoration of the natural stone cover on a degraded former cultivated field. Soil analyses revealed that reestablishing stone cover only slightly acidified the soil, while B. retusum presence enhanced soil fertility. Brachypodium retusum also decreased the nutritional value of forage and increased plant biomass and litter. Plant composition shifted with treatments: B. retusum and stone cover favored xeromesophilous species, while B. retusum alone encouraged less palatable species. The soil seed bank composition and abundance were positively influenced by stone cover but negatively impacted by B. retusum reintroduction. Negative outcomes on some arthropods and mesofauna were measured in treatments with both B. retusum and stones, except for Acari, which were positively impacted by the presence of stones. The findings emphasize that B. retusum is an ecological engineer with complex effects on the different ecosystem components.

Abstract:The agricultural sector suffers from several problems in the state of EL-Oued in southern Algeria at the farm level as a productive unit in the rural desert area due to human practices. Changing the way of dealing with the components of agricultural work brings many benefits in various fields. The implementation of the strategy of sustainable agricultural development achieves positive results on four axes: first, the economy ensures a higher income for the farmer with less and regulated expenditures; second, the crop is more productive and of quality; third, preserving the environment through less resource consumption with the ability to recycle agricultural waste, which reduces the environmental pollution of soil and water; fourth, biodiversity of animal and plant organisms. All axes are in the interest of man as an activist, consumer, and living being who influences and is influenced by the environment in which he lives.

Abstract:Abstract The Algerian steppes frequently experience droughts and significant anthropogenic activities than harm its natural resources, endangering the fragile arid ecosystem’s balance. Hence, an analysis of steppe degradation can be instrumental in initiating remedial measures in the region. This study aims to assess the level of rangeland degradation in the southern Hodna region, a crucial component of the steppe landscape, and analyse the factors driving this degradation. The methodology employed a supervised classification technique, using multi-temporal remote sensing imagery from 1987 to 2016 to analyse land cover distribution. Furthermore, land cover dynamics were combined with carefully selected climatic and anthropogenic data, which were then subjected to canonical correspondece analysis to identify the primary drivers of rangeland degradation. The results reveal a sustained change in land cover dynamics, with a no table 48.65 % reduction in the rangeland class. Simultaneously, there has been a continuous expansion in sand dunes, rangeland degradation, and agriculture classes. It is worth noting that canonical correspondence analysis reveals stronger associations between rangeland degradation and anthropogenic factors than climatic factors. Finally, the study offers crucial insights into rangeland degradation in southern Hodna, aiding policymakers and land managers in developing sustainable development strategies for the region.
Natural regeneration potential of abandoned agricultural land in the southern Gadarif Region, Sudan: implications for conservation

Abstract:The present study seeks to provide a contribution to the understanding of vegetation regrowth on abandoned agricultural land by investigating the impacts of the previous cultivation period and the duration of the fallow on the subsequent natural regeneration in terms of vegetation composition, structure and diversity. The results of the study show that both factors have significant effects on the subsequent regeneration of plant species and thus the vegetation development in the southern Gadarif Region, Sudan. The oldest abandoned farmlands were recolonized by tree/shrub species, whereas recently abandoned ones are covered with herbaceous vegetation. There is a general tendency regarding the number of species to decrease with an increase in the period of cultivation. The plant species diversity pattern shows domination of herbaceous species with some scattered woody species. Vegetation changes due to land abandonment may have implications for the conservation of plant species diversity and composition of fauna harboured in the region. Although natural regeneration could be recommended as means of restoring natural vegetation that previously dominated that region, the current regeneration capacity might not be sufficient to reach the climax vegetation except for some pockets, which received more regenerative resources. Cette étude cherche à apporter sa contribution à la compréhension de la repousse de la végétation sur des terres agricoles abandonnées en étudiant les impacts de la période de mise en culture passée et de la durée de la jachère sur la régénération naturelle qui a suivi, en termes de composition, de structure et de diversité de la végétation. Les résultats montrent que les deux facteurs ont des effets significatifs sur la régénération des espèces végétales et donc sur le développement de la végétation sur la région sud de Gadarif, au Soudan. Les plus anciennes exploitations agricoles abandonnées ont été recolonisées par des espèces d'arbres et d'arbustes, alors que les plus récentes sont couvertes d'une végétation herbacée. Il y a une tendance générale, quant au nombre d'espèces, à diminuer avec l'allongement de la durée de la mise en culture. Le schéma de la diversité végétale montre la domination des espèces herbacées, avec quelques espèces ligneuses éparses. Les changements de végétation dus à l'abandon des terres peuvent avoir des implications sur la conservation de la diversité des espèces végétales et sur la composition de la faune vivant dans la région. Si l'on peut recommander une régénération naturelle comme moyen de restaurer la végétation naturelle qui dominait la région auparavant, la capacité de régénération actuelle pourrait ne pas être suffisante pour atteindre un climax végétal à l'exception de quelques poches qui ont bénéficié de ressources plus régénératives.
Soil quality and ecological benefits assessment of alpine desertified grassland following different ecological restoration measures

Abstract:Introduction: Soil quality plays an irreplaceable role in plant growth for restored grassland. However, few studies investigate the comprehensive effects considering soil and vegetation properties during the restoration of desertified grassland, which restrict the virtuous circle of restored grassland ecosystem. Methods: By setting three restoration patterns of enclosure plus grass (EG), enclosure intercropping shrub-grass (ESG), and enclosure plus sand-barrier and shrub-grass (ESSG) with three different restoration years (≤5, 7-9, and ≥15 years), we selected 28 physicochemical and microbial indicators, and constructed a minimum data set (MDS) to analyze the influences of restoration measurements on soil quality and ecological benefits in alpine desertified grassland. Results: The results showed that the MDS comprised seven soil quality indicators: silt, total nitrogen (TN), carbon-nitrogen ratio (C/N), total potassium (TK), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), microbial biomass phosphorus (MBP), and fungi. Soil quality index (SQI) and ecological restoration effect index (EREI) in restored grasslands significantly increased by 144.83-561.24% and 87.21-422.12%, respectively, compared with unrestored grassland, and their positive effects increased with extending restoration years. The increasing effects of SQI and EREI were the highest in ESSG, followed by EG and ESG. The increasing rate of SQI began to decrease after 5 years in EG and ESG, while it decreased after 7-9 years in ESSG, and that of EREI in EG was lower than ESSG in each restoration year. Our work revealed that ESSG was the optimum restoration pattern for desertified grassland, and anthropogenic monitoring and management measurements such as applying organic fertilization and mowing return reasonably should be carried out at the beginning of 5 years in EG and ESG as well as 7 years in ESSG to maintain sustainable ecological benefits. Discussion: The study highlights that soil quality, including microbial properties, is a key factor to evaluate the restoration effects of desertified grassland.
The role of water harvesting in the development of vegetation cover and reducing desertification within the desert dry areas

Abstract:It has become necessary to find harmony between the need to exploit rainwater and increase agricultural production, while continuing scientific creativity, especially in the field of multiple techniques for harvesting rainwater. This is for human use, irrigation of crops, and preservation of the environment within the drought that affected the ecological balance. The study addresses the importance of water harvesting in the development of pastoral and medicinal vegetation, the advantages of water harvesting techniques, benefiting from available land resources in the Iraqi desert, maintenance of existing wells, and the role of Arab research centres in supporting and settling the local population. The water yield of the valleys was calculated using the SCS method. This method was applied in calculating the volume of water yield prepared by the US Soil Conservation Service. The state of water harvesting in the plateaus of the Kingdom of Morocco was discussed, as natural resources are available within the region represented in its biological environment, despite the existence of a state of pastoral deterioration. This case was chosen as a model to monitor the best projects that can provide a state of environmental balance and stability of natural factors. In addition to opening prospects for balanced development within the region.
Combined Effect of Subsurface Water Retention Technology and Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi on Growth, Physiology and Biochemistry of Argan Seedlings under Field Conditions

Abstract:The argan (Argania spinosa L. Skeels) ecosystem is severely degrading in arid and semi-arid lands due to climate change, particularly in terms of density loss and reforestation failure. Thus, it is important to adopt innovative effective sustainable practices to optimize the densification and reforestation success of the argan tree. The purpose of the present research was to investigate the combined effect of subsurface water retention technology (SWRT) and the use of native arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on edaphic, growth, physiological and biochemical parameters of field-grown argan seedlings in the Essaouira region, Morocco. In this experiment, one-year-old argan seedlings were transplanted in the absence and presence of biodegradable plastic and AMF. Our findings revealed that the application of SWRT enhanced soil profile moisture up to 640% at 40 cm depth compared to the control. The combination of this technology with AMF also improved soil fertility. Furthermore, the application of SWRT, with or without AMF, significantly enhanced argan seedling height (208 and 168%, respectively), stomatal conductance (54 and 33%, respectively), and chlorophyll fluorescence (21 and 20%, respectively). Similarly, the combined application of SWRT and AMF significantly improved protein and sugar content (36 and 57%, respectively), as well as antioxidant enzyme activities (peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase) and chlorophyll pigments content compared to the control. However, this treatment reduced malondialdehyde and H2O2 content in the argan leaves. As a summary, SWRT technology combined with AMF may be used as a valuable strategy to promote the success of argan reforestation and to limit soil erosion and desertification in arid and semi-arid climates.

Abstract:Ecosystems protected from heavy grazing impacts, such as national parks and refuges, are generally considered to sustain higher plant species diversity and better ecosystem composition and structure compared to heavily grazed areas. To evaluate the impact of livestock grazing, we sampled vegetation characteristics from two areas having different grazing intensity levels. The first site has high protection from grazing and is located inside the Bou Hedma National Park in Southern Tunisia. The second site has a low protection from grazing and is situated within an open area located immediately outside the park boundary where human populations and their livestock have unrestricted access to ecosystem resources. Total plant cover, density, perennial species cover and their contribution were compared between the two grazing level sites. Results show that considerable positive effects occur in the areas protected from grazing. As compared to the overgrazed (open) sites. Several species known for their high palatability, such as Cenchrus ciliaris L., Salvia aegyptiaca L., Echiochilon fruticosum Desf. and Helianthemum sessiliflorum Desf., are more abundant inside the park than outside. These results are very important for managers to apply this technique as a tool for increasing the resilience of arid ecosystems, qualified very vulnerable to climate change. Abstract:This article aims to investigate the complex relationship between a local population and its natural and urban environment. The study area, which was previously dominated by cereal cultivation, is currently facing profitability challenges due to climate change, water scarcity, rapid urban expansion, and the overexploitation of aquifers, influenced by changes in agricultural practices, which are disrupting the local ecosystem. This study relies on three interconnected indicators, population growth, climate change effects on agriculture, and the NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), and reveals the impact of these factors on agricultural practices. Google Earth Engine was employed to determine the urbanization and greenness indices using scripts. The significant findings of this study demonstrate the remarkable demographic growth of 49.96% during the study period (2000–2020). Furthermore, this growth has led to a new trend towards intensive farming, with a substantial increase in irrigated lands by 44.19% and a multiplication of protected crop lands by 20 times, rising from 19.88 to 405.89 hectares. Additionally, horticultural production surged by 212.4% during the same period. Moreover, groundwater levels shifted from less than 50 m in the northern regions to less than 150 and 300 m in the southern part of the study area. The water potential in the study zone cannot meet the demands of the new agricultural orientation, which tends to deplete local groundwater, potentially causing recurrent shortages of agricultural products. This study underscores the importance of incorporating agricultural production into future urban planning and development programs to maintain a renewed balance between built environments and agriculture in peri-urban areas.

Abstract:Worldwide, the majority of countries are actively devising strategies to address the challenges associated with unregulated and unmanageable development, the decline in environmental quality and the depletion of valuable agricultural land. This has led to a growing emphasis on understanding land use and land cover. In order to determine a better land use policy, legislators and planners need to know the current distribution of agricultural and urban lands, as well as information about changes in their proportions. Our approach combines data centred on main four themes—geology, slope gradient, hydrographic network and land use—in order to exploit classifier complementarities in our targeted agricultural study area of Tamlouka Basin, Algeria. Landsat 8 OLI-TIRs multispectral imagery and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM-1arc v3) were used experimentally for classification and Digital Elevation Model (DEM) analysis. The classification's accuracy is confirmed by comparing the results of the decision tree classification with the validation samples. Results of the combination of several maps of classifications from the different methods show that the Tamlouka alluvial plain, having an area of 19,300 ha and an average slope gradient of less than 2°, drains the elevated reliefs that surround it via hydrographic network. The plain occupies 37% of the total basin area, with over of 60% being used for crop cultivation, regardless of fallow land areas in agricultural rotation at that time. The slope has been identified as a crucial factor determining land use patterns in the study area. This result can be used in prospective watershed management.

Abstract:<p>The Hotan Region in xinjiang, China is a typical arid area. Natural factors determine that the ecological stability of the area is poor, easy to be damaged and difficult to recover. In order to improve the local ecological environment, this study explored an ecology restoration model with the artificial Tamarix-Cistanche. After the long-term monitoring and comparison at four test sites, it was found that this model also increased the per capita income, reduced the poverty in local farmers, and solved the problem of no direct economic benefit from foresting, as well as the following ecological benefits (1) improving the soil properties, and increasing its powder content and fertility, (2) improving the regional microclimate, reducing the daily temperature and relative humidity ranges, and reducing the regional wind speed, (3) restoring the biodiversity, increasing the vegetation coverage and the amount of animals and plants, and enhancing the water and fertility retention of the soil.</p>

Abstract:Ain Sefra is part of the Ksour Mountains and it's situated in southwestern Algeria, where the climate is arid. The study area is progressively facing regression and degradation exacerbated by climate change. These trends point to a significant acceleration of desertification and drought and the loss of production systems that play a critical social, ecological, and economic role in the region. To better understand the natural hazard of dryness in Ain Sefra and the impact of climate change, we used various drought indices and remote sensing data. Hence, analyzing precipitation records from 1965 to 2021, through several drought indices, droughts were identified as a recurring phenomenon. Moreover, the frequency of successive dry years is relatively high. There were three most extended continuous dry periods. The first phase lasted seven years from 1980 to 1987, the second twelve years from 1994 to 2006, and the third nine years from 2012 to 2021. Calculation of the Modified Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index (MSAVI) for five multidate satellite images allowed us to follow the evolution of land use elements in this region from 1977 to 2017. Indeed, the study of these multi-temporal images reveals a considerable growth of sands, moving towards the north and northeast of the zone during the last decades. The combination of drought indices and remote sensing seems to be most promising; whose results are valuable tools for guidance and decision support to local and regional authorities.

Abstract:Water plays a major role in the Algerian Sahara; it is the main cause of sustaining life of all living in an arid environment. Farmers in Beni Abbes exploiting groundwater for irrigation and to supply the urban center of the oasis, now the size of the palm grove of Beni Abbes shrink by over 50%, that is to say from 40 hectares to 20 hectares only, the oasis suffers from several causes of degradation, which are many: the overexploitation of groundwater aquifers by the anarchical use of pumps and boreholes,salinity of water and soil after the lowering of the groundwater level, the narrowness of the land due to inheritance, the negligence of the earth by the youth due to lack of their production efficiency. The fellahs of the oasis used several traditional techniques to bring water from the groundwater aquifers to its land and dwellings, as foggaras, the pendulum wells (shadoof wells), the accumulations basins and open channels (seguias). Our objective of this work is to study the current state of the oasis and the impact of the use of modern irrigation systems on water and soil of the oasis.

Abstract:Techniques of degraded ecosystems restoration in the Sahel have largely contributed to slowing down desertification process. However, they are often very costly, requiring important manpower and financial resources. The economic benefits of such cases of land restoration are under-documented, especially in scientific literature. The aim of this study is to estimate the ecosystem benefits (market and non-market, direct and indirect) associated with changes in biodiversity induced by forest and landscape restoration (FLR) interventions in the Sahel, and to compare them with the costs of these interventions. Data has been compiled using individual and group surveys, floristic inventory, and existing literature. Ecosystem services framework has been used to structure the analysis. Financial and economic cost-benefit analysis have been compiled, based on the historical case of the managed Gourga forest (Ouahigouya, North Burkina Faso), to estimate whether FLR brings benefits greater than it costs. The results show that restoration of the site is profitable over the first ten years thanks to farming activities, becoming unprofitable in years 11–45 after farming is completely stopped. This study opens up new prospects for improved design of FLR in the Sahel.

Abstract:Irrigation with treated waste water (TWW) in combination with plantation of agroforest species was tested in the Kalaât Landelous region for the reclamation of salt affected soils. Five species (Atriplex nummularia, Eucalyptus gomphocephala, Acacia cyanophylla, Casuarina glauca, Pinus halepensis) were cultivated in saline soils that are affected by shallow, saline groundwater and were irrigated with TWW during the summer season. The results after 4 years of experimentation show a distinct decrease in soil pH and salinity accompanied by a decrease in Cl and Na concentrations. Irrigation decreased the heavy metal concentrations in the topsoil but an increase in deeper layers indicate to leaching due to TWW irrigation. The investigated plant species were differently affected in growth performance by salinity and TWW irrigation. Atriplex nummularia appeared to be the most resistant species and Pinus halepensis the most sensitive one to hydro-pedological conditions of the Kalaât Landelous plot. In conclusion, salt-tolerant plant species seem to be good candidates for the reclamation of salt-affected, waterlogged sites in combination with TWW irrigation, as the adaptations of such species seem to operate under different abiotic stress conditions.
