Abstract:We continue the study of low dimensional linear representations of mapping class groups of surfaces initiated by Franks--Handel and Korkmaz. We consider $(2g+1)$-dimensional complex linear representations of the pure mapping class groups of compact orientable surfaces of genus $g$. We give a complete classification of such representations for $g \geq 7$ up to conjugation, in terms of certain twisted $1$-cohomology groups of the mapping class groups. A new ingredient is to use the computation of a related twisted $1$-cohomology group by Morita. The classification result implies in particular that there are no irreducible linear representations of dimension $2g+1$ for $g \geq 7$, which marks a contrast with the case $g=2$.

Abstract:This paper is an exploration of the faithful transitive permutation representations of the orientation-preserving automorphisms groups of highly symmetric toroidal maps and hypermaps. The main theorems of this paper give a list of all possible degrees of these specific groups. This extends prior accomplishments of the authors, wherein their focus was confined to the study of the automorphisms groups of toroidal regular maps and hypermaps. In addition the authors bring out the recently developed {\sc GAP} package {\sc corefreesub} that can be used to find faithful transitive permutation representations of any group. With the aid of this powerful tool, the authors show how Schreier coset graphs of the automorphism groups of toroidal maps and hypermaps can be easily constructed.

Regular homotopy classes of locally generic mappings

Abstract:In this paper we generalize the notion of regular homotopy of immersions of a closed connected n-manifold into R^{2n-1} to locally generic mappings. The main result is that if n=2 then two mappings with singularities are regularly homotopic if and only if they have the same number of cross-cap (or Whitney-umbrella) singularities. As an application, we get a description of the path-components of the space of those immersions of a surface into R^4 whose projections into R^3 are locally generic.

Homological representations of low genus mapping class groups

Abstract:Given a finite group $G$ acting on a surface $S$, the centralizer of G in the mapping class group $\textrm{Mod}(S)$ has a natural representation given by its action on the homology $H_1(S; \mathbb{Q})$. We consider the question of whether this representation has arithmetic image. Several authors have given positive and negative answers to this question. We give a complete answer when S has genus at most 3.

Abstract:Journal of Topology and Analysis, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we construct a crossed homomorphism by using a group action on the circle and the Poincaré translation number. We relate it to the Euler class of the action in terms of the Hochschild–Serre spectral sequence. As an application, we answer a question of Calegari and Chen, which is on an explicit form of a certain crossed homomorphism on the mapping class group of the sphere minus a Cantor set.

Abstract:We classify homomorphisms from mapping class groups by using arguments involving finite subgroups. First, we give a new proof of a result of Aramayona–Souto that all homomorphisms between certain mapping class groups of closed surfaces are trivial. Second, we show that only finitely many mapping class groups of closed surfaces have nontrivial homomorphisms to for any n , where is the n -sphere. We also effectivize this result for small values of n ; for instance, we prove that every homomorphism from to or is trivial if , extending a result of Franks–Handel.

Abstract:Let $S$ and $S'$ be orientable finite-type surfaces of genus $g\geq 4$ and $g'$, respectively. We prove that every multitwist-preserving map between pure mapping class groups $\text{PMap}(S)\to \text{PMap}(S')$ is induced by a multi-embedding. As an application, we classify all homomorphisms $\text{PMap}(S)\to \text{PMap}(S')$ for $g\geq 4$ and $g' \leq 6\cdot 2^{g-4}$.

Abstract:Let $S$ be a closed oriented surface and $G$ a finite group of orientation preserving automorphisms of $S$ whose orbit space has genus at least $2$. There is a natural group homomorphism from the $G$-centralizer in $Diff^+(S)$ to the $G$-centralizer in $Sp(H_1(S))$. We give a sufficient condition for its image to be a subgroup of finite index and a weaker condition for this to have no finite nonzero orbit (the Putman-Wieland property).

Abstract:This is an overview of the idea of a crossed module. For a group, the triple that consists of the group, its group of automorphisms, and the canonical homomorphism from the group to its group of automorphisms constitutes a crossed module. Crossed modules arise from the identities among the relations of the presentation of a group, from the extension problem for groups and, more generally, in low dimensional topology. Also, the (successful) attempt to extend the idea of a normal extension of commutative fields to the realm of non-commutative algebras leads to crossed modules. Crossed modules appear implicitly in a forgotten paper by A. Turing which in principle settles the extension problem for groups. Crossed modules make perfect sense for Lie algebras.

Mapping Class Groups of Simply Connected Kähler Manifolds

Abstract:This paper has 3 principal goals: (1) to survey what is know about mapping class and Torelli groups of simply connected compact Kaehler manifolds, (2) supplement these results, and (3) present a list of questions and open problems to stimulate future work. Apart from reviewing general background, the paper focuses on the case of hypersurfaces in projective space. We explain how older results of Carlson--Toledo <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="alg-geom/9708002" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/alg-geom/9708002">arXiv:alg-geom/9708002</a> and recent results of Kreck--Su <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2009.08054" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2009.08054">arXiv:2009.08054</a> imply that the homomorphism from the fundamental group of the moduli space of hypersurfaces in P^4 to the mapping class group of the underlying manifold has a very large kernel (contains a free group of rank 2) and has image of infinite index. This is in contrast to the case of curves, where the homomorphism is an isomorphism.

Abstract:Let $\phi \in {\rm Mod}(\Sigma)$ be an arbitrary element of the mapping class group of a closed orientable surface $\Sigma$ of genus at least $2$. For any characteristic cover $\widetilde{\Sigma} \to \Sigma$ one can consider the linear subspace ${\rm H}_1^{f.o.}(\widetilde{\Sigma}, \mathbb{Q})^\phi \subseteq {\rm H}_1(\widetilde{\Sigma}, \mathbb{Q})$ consisting of all homology classes with finite $\phi$-orbit. We prove that $\dim {\rm H}_1^{f.o.}(\widetilde{\Sigma}, \mathbb{Q})^\phi$ can be arbitrary large for any fixed $\phi \in {\rm Mod}(\Sigma)$.

Abstract:We prove the congruence subgroup property for the centralizer of a finite subgroup $G$ in the mapping class group of a hyperbolic oriented and connected surface of finite topological type $S$ such that the genus of the quotient surface $S/G$ is at most $2$. As an application, we show that torsion elements in the mapping class group of a surface of genus $\leq 2$ are conjugacy distinguished.

On kernels of homological representations of mapping class groups

Abstract:We study the kernels of representations of mapping class groups of surfaces on twisted homologies of configuration spaces. We relate them with the kernel of a natural twisted intersection pairing: if the latter kernel is trivial then the representation is faithful. As a main example, we study the representations $\rho_{n}$ of $\mathrm{Mod}(\Sigma_{g,1})$ based on a Heisenberg local system on the $n$ points configuration space of $\Sigma_{g,1}$, introduced by Blanchet--Palmer--Shaukat, and some of their specializations. In the one point configuration case, or when the Heisenberg group is quotiented by an element of its center, we find kernel elements in the twisted intersection form. On the other hand, for $n>2$ configuration points and the full Heisenberg local system, we identify subrepresentations of subgroups of $\mathrm{Mod}(\Sigma_{g,1})$ with Lawrence representations. In particular, we find one of these subgroups, which is isomorphic to a pure braid group on $g$ strands, on which the representations $\rho_n$ are faithful.

Crossing symmetry and the crossing map

Abstract:We introduce and study the crossing map, a closed linear map acting on operators on the tensor square of a given Hilbert space that is inspired by the crossing property of quantum field theory. This map turns out to be closely connected to Tomita--Takesaki modular theory. In particular, crossing symmetric operators, namely those operators that are mapped to their adjoints by the crossing map, define endomorphisms of standard subspaces. Conversely, such endomorphisms can be integrated to crossing symmetric operators. We also investigate the relation between crossing symmetry and natural compatibility conditions with respect to unitary representations of certain symmetry groups, and furthermore introduce a generalized crossing map defined by a real object in an abstract $C^*$-tensor category, not necessarily consisting of Hilbert spaces and linear maps. This latter crossing map turns out to be closely related to the (unshaded, finite-index) subfactor theoretical Fourier transform. Lastly, we provide families of solutions of the crossing symmetry equation, solving in addition the categorical Yang--Baxter equation, associated with an arbitrary Q-system.

Abstract:In the paper "Algebraic classification of rational CR structures on topological 5-sphere with transversal holomorphic S^1-action in C^4" (Yau and Yu, Math. Nachrichten 246-247(2002), 207-233), we give algebraic classification of rational CR structures on the topological 5-sphere with transversal holomorphic S^1-action in C^4. Here, algebraic classification of compact strongly pseudoconvex CR manifolds X means classification up to algebraic equivalence, i.e. roughly up to isomorphism of the normalization of the complex analytic variety V which has X as boundary. The problem is intimately related to the study of 3-dimensional isolated rational weighted homogeneous hypersurface singularities with link homeomorphic to S^5. For this, we need the classification of 3-dimensional isolated rational hypersurface singularities with a C*-action. This list is only available at the homepage of one of us. Since there is a desire for a complete list of this classification (cf. Theorem 3.3), we decide to publish it for the convenience of readers.

Abstract:Let $\pi$ be a discrete group, and let $G$ be a compact connected Lie group. Then there is a map $\Theta\colon\mathrm{Hom}(\pi,G)_0\to\mathrm{map}_*(B\pi,BG)_0$ between the null-components of the spaces of homomorphism and based maps, which sends a homomorphism to the induced map between classifying spaces. Atiyah and Bott studied this map for $\pi$ a surface group, and showed that it is surjective in rational cohomology. In this paper, we prove that the map $\Theta$ is surjective in rational cohomology for $\pi=\mathbb{Z}^m$ and the classical group $G$ except for $SO(2n)$, and that it is not surjective for $\pi=\mathbb{Z}^m$ with $m\ge 3$ and $G=SO(2n)$ with $n\ge 4$. As an application, we consider the surjectivity of the map $\Theta$ in rational cohomology for $\pi$ a finitely generated nilpotent group. We also consider the dimension of the cokernel of the map $\Theta$ in rational homotopy groups for $\pi=\mathbb{Z}^m$ and the classical groups $G$ except for $SO(2n)$.

A Class of Homeomorphisms on Homogeneous Spaces of a Group Action

Abstract:We develop a class of homeomorphisms on a compact homogeneous space of a transitive group action and show how the class sheds new light on a decomposition problem. We further use this class to show that every such homogeneous space in a locally convex topological vector space which is also convex must necessarily be trivial, ie. a singleton set. Additionally, this class of homeomorphisms allows us to relate the induced group action on the space of continuous functions to the action on the homogeneous space.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a complex surface obtained as the quotient of the complex Euclidean space $\mathbb{C}^2$ by a discrete subgroup of rank $3$. We investigate the cohomology group $H_0^1(X, E)$ with compact support for a unitary flat line bundle $E$ over $X$. We show the vanishing of $H_0^1(X, E)$ for a certain class of such pairs $(X, E)$, which includes infinitely many examples such that $H^1(X, E)$ is non-Hausdorff and infinite dimensional.
