Abstract:Blood coagulation is a self-repair process regulated by activated platelet surfaces, clotting factors, and inhibitors. Antithrombin (AT) is one such inhibitor that impedes coagulation by targeting and inactivating several key coagulation enzymes. The effect of AT is greatly enhanced in the presence of heparin, a common anticoagulant drug. When heparin binds to AT, it either bridges with the target enzyme or induces allosteric changes in AT leading to more favorable binding with the target enzyme.
