Abstract:This article highlights the development of modified polymer nanocomposites by zero-dimensional carbon nano onions (0-D CNOs). The fabricated samples were examined with mechanical testing such as tensile and 3‐point bending to characterize and evaluate the influence of nanomaterial (CNO). Afterward, the drilling operations were performed according to Box Behnken Design (BBD) for machinability evaluation. The drilling findings reveal that the nanomaterial addition substantially influenced the drill hole quality. Subsequently, the effect of drilling constraints, namely, cutting speed, feed rate, and weight % of CNO, was investigated to optimize the cutting force (Thrust, Torque) and surface roughness. The microstructure analysis of the drilled hole defines the defect and damages caused during the machining process. The supplement of carbon nanomaterials (CNO) in modified polymer composite could reduce the crack formation and machining-induced damage. In this study, the tensile strength of the modified epoxy matrix by CNO nanomaterial has been increased 81.027% by the neat epoxy composite materials at CNO 1.5 wt%. The flexural strength increased from 64.268 to 158.054 MPa, and stiffness increased by 5.33% over the neat epoxy composite materials with the supplement of CNO 1.5 wt%. The results indicated that 1.5 wt% of CNO was the optimum percentage to improve machinability in terms of cutting force and surface roughness. The findings of tensile, flexural testing and microstructure investigations reveal the practicability of the developed nanocomposites for structural functions.
