Toxin Reviews
Abstract:Cobalt, a heavy metal, poses a significant risk to the male reproductive system due to its potential cytotoxic effects from occupational hazards, chemical exposure, and dietary intake. This review critically evaluates Cobalt's cytotoxic effects on male reproductive health, focusing on sperm quality, hormone levels, and testicular function, with the aim of informing future studies and public health policies. A literature review was conducted on the effects of Cobalt on male reproductive functions, focusing on sperm motility, morphology, testosterone levels, and testicular histology, using academic databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Findings shows a link between Cobalt exposure and male reproductive health issues, including oxidative stress, inflammation, sperm motility decline, hormonal changes, and structural changes in testicular tissues. Notably, Cobalt exposure in experimental animals varies based on exposure period, dosage, and species, with only toxicity-inducing concentrations or when exposure surpasses the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) causing testes and compromised sperm function in rodent models. This review highlights the cytotoxic effects of Cobalt on male reproductive functions, highlighting its potential risks to sperm quality, hormonal balance, and testicular architecture. It calls for further research and policymakers to implement safe exposure limits.
