Abstract:Although the coal pore structure is attracting the attention of researchers, studies on the multifractal and gas adsorption/desorption capacity are relatively few. In this study, multifractal characteristics were analyzed, and their effects on gas adsorption/desorption were discussed. The results showed that metamorphism and tectonism affected gas adsorption/desorption by changing the coal pore structure. The limit gas adsorption volume and initial desorption rate of tectonic coals increased by 3.9%–23.9% and 1.96–2.7 times, respectively. The information dimension (D 1), correlation dimension (D 2), and classical Hurst index gradually decreased with metamorphism and tectonism, while the Hausdorff dimension and Δα gradually increased, indicating that pore size distribution (PSD) was more decentralized or inhomogeneous. The evaluation results of the correlation between multifractal parameters and complexity confirmed its accuracy in assessing pore complexity. Multifractal parameters have a significant impact on gas adsorption/desorption capacity overall, mainly by reflecting the concentration degree, local density, and homogeneity of pores.

Abstract:Nanopore heterogeneity significantly affects the adsorption, desorption, and diffusion processes of coalbed methane. Here, the medium- and high-rank coals of the Benxi Formation in the eastern margin of the Ordos Basin were taken as the research object, and low-pressure CO2 adsorption and low-temperature N2 adsorption experiments were used to study the pore characteristics; combined with multifractal theory, the multifractal characteristics of micropores (0.3–2.0 nm) and meso-/macropores (2–300 nm) in MRC and HRC are characterized and explored, and the evolutionary trends and influential factors during metamorphism are explored. The results show that the pore distribution of micropores and meso-/macropores in MRC to HRC coal has multifractal characteristics. Compared with meso-/macropores, micropores exhibit smaller Δα values and larger H values; that is, micropores have weaker heterogeneity and better pore connectivity. As the coal rank increases, the percentage of the micropore volume in the coal increases, and the pore size distribution of micropores and meso-/macropores tends to be more homogeneous, which leads to a decrease in the pore structure uniformity and improvement in the pore connectivity in coal reservoirs. An increase in the vitrinite content leads to better connectivity and a more uniform pore structure of micropores and meso-/macropores. An increase in the mineral content and A d leads to a decrease in the connectivity of micropores and meso-/macropores and tends to increase the complexity of pore structures. With increasing micropore volume and specific surface area, the degree of pore aggregation and heterogeneity decreases, and the pore connectivity increases. However, there is no significant correlation between the pore structure and the multifractal parameters of the meso-/macropore structure. The HRC samples have more micropores than the MRC samples and thus exhibit greater pore structure homogeneity and better pore connectivity. A uniform distribution and good connectivity of the pores help to improve the methane adsorption capacity.

Abstract:The adsorption pore structure is the key affecting the technology of enhanced coal bed methane recovery (ECBM). In this paper, nitrogen adsorption measurement (NAM) and low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods are used to test the structural parameters of adsorption pores of four coal samples with different metamorphic degrees. Combining with the fractal theory, the applicability and the physical significance of fractal dimensions obtained from different models are analyzed. Finally, the main factors affecting the complexity of the pore size structure and the influence of fractal characteristics on the adsorption properties of coal are discussed. The results show that with the increase in the degree of metamorphism, the ranking order of the volume and the specific surface area of adsorption pores of four coal samples are long flame coal > anthracite > gas coal > coking coal. The fractal dimension D2 calculated by the Frenkel–Halsey–Hill (FHH) fractal model ranges from 2.5 to 2.9, representing the degree of the pore surface irregularity, and D3 calculated by the FHH fractal model ranges from 2.004 to 2.037, representing the complexity of pore size distribution. There is no clear quantitative relationship between the fractal dimension and the single structure parameters of adsorption pores. The more the pore diameter distribution is concentrated in the range of 2–5 nm, the larger the fractal dimension is, the higher the complexity of adsorption pore structure is; D2, which represents the irregularity of the surface of coal, has a good linear positive correlation with the maximum adsorption capacity of N2.

Abstract:The accurate description of micro-/nanopores in deep coal reservoirs plays an important role in evaluating the reservoir properties and gas production capacity of coalbed methane (CBM). This work studies nine continuous samples of high–rank coal from the Daning–Jixian area of the Ordos Basin. Maceral analysis, proximate analysis, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), low-pressure CO2 adsorption (LPA), low-temperature N2 adsorption (LTA) and high-pressure methane adsorption (HPMA) experiments were conducted for each sample. The fractal dimension (D) of the LPA data was calculated by using the micropore fractal model. The characteristics of the deep coal reservoir pore structure, proximate analysis, relationship between maceral and fractal dimensions, and gas adsorption capacity of the micropores are discussed. The results showed that the combination of LPA with nonlocalized density functional theory (NLDFT) models and LTA with NLDFT models can more accurately determine the pore size distribution of the micropores. The pore volume (PV) and specific surface area (SSA) of the coals were distributed in the ranges of 0.059~0.086 cm3/g and 204.38~282.42 m2/g, respectively. Although the degree of micropore development varies greatly among different coal samples, the pore distribution characteristics are basically the same, and the PV and SSA are the most developed in the pore size range of 0.4–0.7 nm. Ash content (Ad) and mineral composition are two major factors affecting micropore structure, but they have different impacts on the fractal dimension. The higher the vitrinite content, moisture content (Mad) and Ad are, the larger the micropore fractal dimension (D) and the stronger the heterogeneity of the pore structure. Micropores account for 99% of the total SSA in coal, and most methane can be adsorbed in micropores. The fractal dimension of micropores can be used to evaluate the pore structure characteristics. The larger the fractal dimension, the smaller the micro-SSA and micro-PV of the coal sample. Fractal analysis is helpful to better understand the pore structure and adsorption capacity of CBM reservoirs.

Abstract:Coalbed methane (CBM) reservoirs constitute a distinct class of dense organic rocks characterized by extremely low porosity and permeability. Conducting an in-depth investigation into pore heterogeneity assumes paramount importance for the exploration and development of CBM. This study focuses on the multifractal analysis of the pores with diameters below 300 nm in six coal samples sourced from the Junggar Basin and the Qinshui Basin in China. The analysis is based on a series of experiments involving CO2 adsorption, low-temperature N2 adsorption/desorption, and CH4 isothermal adsorption. This work delves into the influence of pore heterogeneity on gas adsorption capacity by linking the structural parameters to CH4 adsorption properties. The results indicate that both the micropores, as assessed through CO2 adsorption, and mesopores to macropores, measured via N2 adsorption, exhibit multifractal behavior. In contrast to micropores, the mesopores and macropores display stronger heterogeneity and lower connectivity. Generally, uniform and well-connected nanopores are anticipated to positively contribute to gas adsorption. However, there is a positive correlation between the Langmuir volume and the heterogeneity degree of micropores. This phenomenon is ascribed to the fact that the greater surface complexity in micropores involves a larger specific surface area and a higher abundance of adsorption sites. This research contributes to a more profound and precise comprehension of the heterogeneous pore structure within CBM reservoirs, thereby establishing a theoretical foundation for the sustainable exploitation of CBM.
Investigation on the Structure and Fractal Characteristics of Nanopores in High-Rank Coal: Implications for the Methane Adsorption Capacity

Abstract:The structure and fractal characteristics of nanopores of high-rank coal were investigated using an approach that integrates N₂ adsorption and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The results indicated that the high-rank coal of the Shanxi Formation has a complex pore-fracture network composed of organic matter pores, mineral-related pores, and microfractures. The pore type of high-rank coal tends to be complicated, and the main pore types are inkbottle pores and open pores, which are more conducive to methane enrichment. The Ro,max has a negative relationship with the total pore volume. In addition, the ash and inertinite contents show a positive correlation with the average pore size (APS), while the fixed carbon content exhibits a negative relationship with the APS. The pore structure of high-rank coal is controlled not only by the degree of metamorphism but also by coal composition, which leads to the variation in pore structure becoming more complicated. With the increase in coal metamorphism, high-rank coal with high amounts of fixed carbon content generally possesses a higher irregularity in pore structure. No obvious relationship was observed between D₂ and the coal components, which indicates that the pore structure, ash content, moisture content and other factors controlled by the metamorphism of coal have different effects on D₂ that lead to this inapparent relationship. A negative relationship exists between adsorption volume and D1, which indicates that the high irregularity of the pore structure is not conducive to methane absorption and that no obvious correlation exists between the adsorption volume and D₂. In the high-rank coal, the high D1 value represents the complexity and heterogeneity of the pore structure and represents a low adsorption affinity for methane molecules; in addition, D₂ has no effect on the methane adsorption capacity.

Abstract:<p>A better knowledge about the impact of coal composition and pore structure on gas adsorption is of great significance for coalbed methane exploration and uneconomic coalbed CO<sub>2</sub> storage. Coal is a porous medium with complex organic components, and most pores in coal are nanopores that have a complex geometrical morphology. As a result, it is significantly necessary to investigate the impact of coal composition and pore structure on gas adsorption based on coal 3D nanopore structure. Synchrotron radiation nano‐computed tomography (CT) was applied to acquire 3D coal nanopore structure and synchrotron radiation small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) was used to obtain the pore surface fractal dimension. The coal with higher pore surface fractal dimension presents higher Langmuir volume. Based on the 3D nanopore structure acquired by synchrotron radiation nano‐CT, gas adsorption capacity was characterized by the adsorbed gas amount on unit pore surface area. It was found that gas adsorption capacity depends on the coal composition. There is a negative correlation between gas adsorption capacity and ash content and oxygen‐containing groups, and a positive correlation between gas adsorption capacity and vitrinite contents. Hysteresis between desorption and adsorption isotherms is dependent upon the ratio of throat number to pore number, and the hysteresis becomes more significant when the ratio is larger. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.</p>

Abstract:The pore structure of low-rank coal reservoirs was highly complex. It was the basis for predicting the gas occurrence and outburst disasters. Different scale pores have different effects on adsorption–desorption, diffusion, and seepage in coalbed methane. To study the pore structure distribution characteristics, which are in different scales of low-rank coal with different metamorphism grade, the pore structure parameters of low-rank coal were obtained by using the mercury injection, N2 adsorption, and CO2 adsorption. These three methods were used to test the pore volume and specific surface area of low-rank coal in their test ranges. Then, the fractal dimension method was used to calculate the fractal characteristics of the pore structure of full aperture section to quantify the complexity of the pore structure. The experimental results showed that the pore volume and specific surface area of low-rank coal were mainly controlled by microporous. The pore fractal characteristics were obvious. With the influence of coalification process, as the degree of coal metamorphism increases, fluctuations in the comprehensive fractal dimension, specific surface area, and pore volume of the pore size range occur within the range of Rmax = 0.50% to 0.65%.

Abstract:The influence of high-rank coal's pore characteristics on the physical properties, gas-bearing properties, and exploitation of coal reservoirs is becoming more and more prominent. How to establish the classification to describe the pore networks combining quantitative and qualitative characteristics has emerged as a major problem, which may offer a scientific foundation to deepen the understanding of this issue. In this research, the structure and fractal characteristics of reservoir pores were determined after analyzing 20 high-rank coal samples from Xinjing Coal Mine in the Qinshui Basin with the application of the high-pressure mercury intrusion method (HPMI) and argon ion polishing–field emission scanning electron microscopy (AIP–FESEM). The results show that the tested coal samples were bipolar distributed, with transitional pores and micropores dominating the pore volume, followed by macropores. The Menger sponge fractal models manifested two or three distinct straight-line segments with demarcation points of 65 nm and 1000 nm. A natural classification with three major pore types of diffusion pores (D-pores), seepage pores (S-pores), and pico pores (P-pores), demarcated by pore size intervals of 65 nm and 1 nm and seven sub-types, was established to relate pores to pore networks based on these fractal characteristics and the kinetic characteristics of methane molecules. This classification scheme can characterize the relationship between pore types and the corresponding major occurrence and transport mechanisms of the gas. In addition, P-pores and D-pores are predominately nanoscale OM pores with three major genetic types of organic constituent interparticle pores (5–200 nm), metamorphic pores (<5 nm), and intermorphic pores ( 65 nm). Since fractal analysis is a more comprehensive characterization of reservoir structure and quantitatively reflects the pore structure, undulating state, and roughness of the inner surface, fractal parameters can be used as an important index to describe the pore structure characteristics of high-rank coal reservoirs.

Abstract:This article focused on the study of pore structure characteristics of Songhe and Linhua coal samples based on mercury injection experiments and high-pressure isothermal adsorption experiments. The results show that the pore structure of coal samples in the two mining areas is obviously different under the influence of metamorphic degree. The pores of Songhe mine coal samples, which are characteristic of middle-rank coal reserves, are predominantly open cylindrical pores with good connectivity to medium-to-large pores but poor absorption capacity. The tiny and medium pores of Linhua coal samples, which are characteristic of high-level coal reserves, have poor connectivity, dominated by conical pores with mostly closed and semi-closed pores. The pore size distribution of the middle-rank coal sample is multi-peaked, with better developed pore sizes, while the pore size distribution of the Linhua coal sample is bi-peaked, with micro and small pores developed. The pore fractal shape of high-rank coal reserves is higher than that of middle-rank coal reserves, and the complexity of permeable pore space and diffusive pore space of high-order coal reservoirs is higher than that of middle-order coal reservoirs.

Abstract:Understanding pore heterogeneity is essential to obtain insights into the gas storage, transport, and recovery from coal. The pore structure in analytical sample particles of different sizes varies significantly, leading to inaccurate pore characterization. In this study, we discuss the effect of particle size on the pore structures and multifractal characteristics of two samples with six particle sizes using low-pressure gas adsorption. The results show that, with decreasing particle size, the mesopore and macropore volumes and specific surface areas (SSAs) of the two samples fluctuate. The variations of micropores that contribute to most of the total pore volume and SSA (>90%) are different. Multifractal analysis shows that the subsamples with the smallest particle size have the most homogeneous pore structures and the highest pore connectivity. We reveal a negative power function relationship among particle size and pore volume, and SSA, indicating that crushing opens up more pores that were initially closed. The differences between the two coal samples may be caused by the combined effects of crushing and associated impacts (e.g., pore collapse), coalification, incomplete equilibration of N2 adsorption, and mineralogical inhomogeneity. Our results demonstrate that in the range of test particles, the finer the particle size used, the more accurate the evaluation of highly mature coal adsorption properties.

Abstract:In this study, the microscopic pore characteristics of shale in marine strata are evaluated. Based on field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), low-temperature N 2 adsorption (LT-N 2 GA), low-pressure CO 2 adsorption (LP-CO 2 GA) and high-pressure methane adsorption (HPMA) experiments, the pore characteristics of 12 shales from the Wufeng–Longmaxi Formations in northern Yunnan and Guizhou are characterized qualitatively and quantitatively. Fractal Frenkel–Halsey–Hill (FHH) theory is used to analyse the fractal characteristics, and the adsorption pore characteristics of shale are discussed. The correlation between the fractal dimension and pore structure and adsorption performance is determined. The results show that the total organic carbon (TOC) contents of the 12 shales are in the middle–low level, ranging from 0.43% to 5.42%, and the shales are generally in the highly mature to overmaturity stage (vitrinite reflectance ( R o ) values between 1.80% and 2.51%). The mineral composition is mainly quartz and clay minerals. The average clay mineral content is 40.98% (ranging from 24.7% to 63.3%), and the average quartz content is 29.03% (ranging from 16.8% to 39.6%), which are consistent with those of marine shale in the Sichuan Basin. FE-SEM and LT-N 2 GA isotherms reveal a complex shale pore structure and open pore style, mainly ink bottle-shaped and parallel plate-like pores. The total pore volumes (PVs) range from 0.012–0.052 cm 3 /g, and the specific surface area (SSA) values range from 18.112–38.466 m 2 /g. All shale samples have abundant micropores and mesopores, accounting for >90% of the total SSA. The fractal dimensions, D1 and D2, were obtained from N 2 adsorption data, with different adsorption characteristics at 0–0.5 and 0.5–1.0 relative pressures. The fractal dimensions increase with increasing BJH PV and BET SSA and decrease with decreasing average pore diameter (APD). The fractal dimensions are positively correlated with the TOC and clay mineral contents and negatively correlated with the quartz content. The fractal dimension can be used to evaluate the methane adsorption capacity; the larger the fractal dimension is, the larger the methane adsorption capacity is. Fractal analysis is helpful to better understand the pore structure and adsorption capacity of shale gas reservoirs.

Abstract:The quantitative evaluation of pore-fractures which links to methane storage space and transportation channels is of great significance for underground gas extraction and coalbed methane development. This study is aimed at revealing the surface roughness and structure irregularity of typical bituminous coal samples using the combination of SEM, box-counting method, and low-pressure N 2 adsorption (LPN 2 A). Pore-fracture fractal dimension is calculated based on the SEM images, and its influencing factors involving coal maturity, tectonic deformation, coal components, and pore structure have been explored in depth. The results indicate that pore morphology varies greatly among these samples. Some wedge-shaped macopores (diameter > 50 nm) and bottle-shaped pores are identified in bituminous C coals, and macropores are the dominant pore types, while macropores only account for less than 23% of pore volume in the high-rank bituminous coals, suggesting that mesopores take a leading role in coal with rank of bituminous A. These samples have different pore-fracture fractal dimensions with D ranging from 1.28 to 1.94, and D is distributed in sequence: bituminous A > bituminous B > bituminous C. The ash content plays a vital role in structure irregularity, and it can reduce the fractal dimension due to the filling in the coal pore-fractures. However, as the increase of burial depth and tectonic deformation, a large proportion of macropores and fractures are transformed into smaller pores including mesopores and micropores, leading to the growing surface heterogeneity. Abstract:Important breakthroughs have recently been achieved in deep coalbed methane (CBM) exploration and development in regions such as the eastern margin of the Ordos Basin, China. Investigating the development characteristics of various-scale pores in deep coalbeds is of great significance for resource assessment and selection of favorable zones for CBM exploration. Herein, six deep coal samples were selected from the Shanxi and Taiyuan Formations in the Daning-Jixian block on the eastern margin of the Ordos Basin. Low-pressure CO2/N2 adsorption (LP-CO2/N2GA) and high-pressure mercury intrusion (HPMI) methods were employed to analyze pore volume, specific surface area, and pore size distribution, thereby evaluating the full-scale pore characteristics. Furthermore, the fractal dimension characteristics of deep coal rock pores were elucidated, revealing the influence of pore structure, burial depth, and coal composition. The results indicate that micropores in deep coal rocks have the highest volume and specific surface area proportions, while mesopores have the smallest volume proportion, and macropores make the least contribution to the total specific surface area. The V-S, Frenkel-Halsey-Hill, and Sierpinski models were suitable for calculating the fractal dimensions of micropores, mesopores, and macropores with LP-CO2GA, LP-N2GA, and HPMI experimental data, respectively. Other than the relatively smaller mesopore fractal dimension of samples 20-8 and 20-10, the micropore, mesopore, and macropore fractal dimensions successively increased in the other four samples. The comprehensive fractal dimension, which exhibited a decreasing trend with increasing pore volume and specific surface area, was negatively correlated with burial depth, mineral and moisture contents, and ash and volatile component yields, while it was positively correlated with vitrinite and fixed carbon contents.

Abstract:Coal seam CO 2 sequestration is an important option to address global warming. A better knowledge on coal pore structure evolution during gas adsorption can provide guidance for coal seams CO 2 sequestration. However, few investigations on the pore structure evolution differences between the deep and shallow coal were conducted during gas adsorption. In this study, based on the real-time synchrotron radiation small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) observation, the average pore diameter and pore surface fractal dimension evolution differences between deep and shallow coal were investigated from the aspects of coal compositions and stress history. Two types of coal deformation (inner-swelling and outer-swelling) coexist during gas adsorption. Coal compositions have significant impact on the dominance of deformation type. The dominance of inner-swelling in deep coal is induced by the higher ash contents, and there is the decrease of average pore diameter during gas adsorption. The impact of stress-history (burial depth) on adsorption-induced deformation is more prominent than that of gas adsorption capacity. In deep coal, the surface fractal dimension evolution presents a negative correlation with the evolution of pore diameters. In shallow coal, the surface fractal dimension evolution presents a Langmuir-type correlation with the adsorption time.

Abstract:The presence of gas content in medium- and high-rank coal poses a threat to safety production. Safe gas extraction is based on a correct understanding of the pore structure of coal. This work investigates the pore structure characteristics of medium- and high-rank coal and evaluates their fractal structure. The coal samples were collected from Huainan Coalfield and Qinshui Coalfield, and divided into four types, according to the difference in surface bright characteristics. Through adopting low-temperature liquid nitrogen adsorption and desorption, and applying Kelvin equation, we obtain the main pore structure types and main pore size distribution characteristics of various coal briquettes. Electron microscope scanning structure and scientific analysis were used for special adsorption and desorption curves and hysteresis to find the dynamic reason. According to the different adsorption mechanism and Frenkel–Halsey–Hill-based model, with P/ P 0 = 0.4 as the dividing point of fractal dimension analysis, the pore structure of coal samples is classified into five grades. The fractal evaluation results are consistent with the results of curve analysis and pore size analysis.

Abstract:Microscopic pores significantly impact the coalbed methane (CBM) storage, hence gas energy recovery and gas-related problems mitigation. However, the quantitative relationship between microscopic pore properties and CBM storage dictated by gas adsorption capacity remains unclear. In this study, high-pressure isothermal gas adsorption experiments were conducted using differently ranked coal samples to investigate gas adsorption characteristics. High-pressure mercury injection (HPMI), low-pressure nitrogen adsorption (LPGA-N 2 ), low-pressure carbon dioxide adsorption (LPGA-CO 2 ) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tests were employed for full-scale microscopic pore structure characterization. Considering potential energy induced by CH 4 molecules and microscopic pore wall interaction, an improved method was proposed to quantitatively characterize gas adsorption capacity and obtain CH 4 occurrence characteristics for different-scale pores. The results show that microscopic properties of differently ranked coal samples vary remarkably with evident heterogeneity. The micropore specific surface area (SSA) is 79.396–232.253 m 2 /g, accounting for 90.03%–99.45% of the total specific surface area (TSSA). The adsorption capacities of differently ranked coal samples present significant differences and range between 13.38 and 20.08 cc/g, and shows an asymmetric U-shaped trend as coal metamorphism deepens. Based on microscopic pore properties, the Langmuir volume theoretically calculated using the new method ranges between 12.29 and 20.85 cc/g. The calculated results agree well with experimental results with a relative error of less than 10%, proving that this theoretical model can predict gas adsorption capacity with sufficient confidence.

Abstract:Characteristics of supercritical CO2 adsorption/desorption on coals are the key scientific problems for CO2 geological sequestration in deep coal seams. The differences in pore structures of tectonically deformed coals will affect their adsorption/desorption characteristics. Isothermal adsorption/desorption experiments of CO2 on five medium rank coal samples with different tectonic deformations were carried out at 45℃ and 0–16 MPa. Characteristics of adsorption/desorption, including isotherm, adsorption extremes, desorption deviation and negative adsorption, were investigated. Based on mercury intrusion porosimetry, low temperature N2 and CO2 adsorption experiments, pore structure and fractal characteristics were analyzed. Finally, effects of pore structure on characteristics of adsorption/desorption and adsorption mechanism were investigated. Results show that CO2 adsorption and desorption isotherms shows the “two-stage” variation with multiple extremes and negative adsorption. The adsorption peak values at low pressure stage are mainly affected by pore specific surface area of transition pores, while the adsorption capacity at high pressure stage is mainly controlled by the development of ultra-micropores, especially for ductile deformed coals. As the coal deforms from weak to strong, the desorption deviation shows the change trend of “premature desorption - reversible desorption - premature desorption”, which is controlled by fractal characteristics of pores (D 1 and D 3). Extraction of small organic molecules by supercritical CO2 has been considered as a possible cause for increase in density of bulk free phase and negative adsorption.

Abstract:To study the microscopic pore characteristics of marine–continental transitional shale, we studied the Daning–Jixian block of the Shanxi Formation using low-pressure CO2 adsorption (LP-CO2A) and low-temperature N2 adsorption (LT-N2A) methods in conjunction with field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), geochemistry, and mineral composition analysis in order to obtain pore structure characteristic parameters. The fractal dimension of the pores was calculated using the Frankel–Halsey–Hill (FHH) model, and the study also discusses the factors that influence the pore structure. The study found that the marine–continental transitional phase shale of the Shanxi Formation has clay mineral contents ranging from 36.24% to 65.21%. The total organic carbon (TOC) contents range from 0.64% to 9.70%. Additionally, the organic matter maturity is high. The FE-SEM and gas adsorption experiments revealed that the transitional shale of the Shanxi Formation possesses a diverse range of pore types with relatively large pore sizes. The dominant pore types are organic and intragranular pores, with pore morphologies predominantly appearing as slit and parallel plate structures. According to the experimental data on gas adsorption, the total SSA values range from 11.126 to 47.220 m2/g. The total PV values range from 0.014 to 0.056 cm3/g. Micropores make up a greater proportion of the total SSA, whereas mesoporous pores make up a greater proportion of the total PV. The distribution of shale pore fractal dimensions D1 and D2 (D1 is 2.470 to 2.557; D2 is 2.531 to 2.755), obtained through LT-N2A data, is relatively concentrated. D1 and D2 have a positive correlation with the TOC content, clay mineral content, and BET-SSA, and D1 and D2 have a negative correlation with the quartz content. D2 is positively correlated with the Langmuir volume, showing that D2 can be used to evaluate the methane adsorption capacity.
