Abstract:The inevitable accumulation of errors in near-future quantum devices represents a key obstacle in delivering practical quantum advantages, motivating the development of various quantum error-mitigation methods. Here, we derive fundamental bounds concerning how error-mitigation algorithms can reduce the computation error as a function of their sampling overhead. Our bounds place universal performance limits on a general error-mitigation protocol class. We use them to show (1) that the sampling overhead that ensures a certain computational accuracy for mitigating local depolarizing noise in layered circuits scales exponentially with the circuit depth for general error-mitigation protocols and (2) the optimality of probabilistic error cancellation among a wide class of strategies in mitigating the local dephasing noise on an arbitrary number of qubits. Our results provide a means to identify when a given quantum error-mitigation strategy is optimal and when there is potential room for improvement.

Abstract:Two schemes are presented that mitigate the effect of errors and decoherence in short-depth quantum circuits. The size of the circuits for which these techniques can be applied is limited by the rate at which the errors in the computation are introduced. Near-term applications of early quantum devices, such as quantum simulations, rely on accurate estimates of expectation values to become relevant. Decoherence and gate errors lead to wrong estimates of the expectation values of observables used to evaluate the noisy circuit. The two schemes we discuss are deliberately simple and do not require additional qubit resources, so to be as practically relevant in current experiments as possible. The first method, extrapolation to the zero noise limit, subsequently cancels powers of the noise perturbations by an application of Richardson's deferred approach to the limit. The second method cancels errors by resampling randomized circuits according to a quasiprobability distribution.

Abstract:Quantum computation, a paradigm of computing that is completely different from classical methods, benefits from theoretically proved speed-ups for certain problems and can be used to study the properties of quantum systems1. Yet, because of the inherently fragile nature of the physical computing elements (qubits), achieving quantum advantages over classical computation requires extremely low error rates for qubit operations, as well as substantial physical qubits, to realize fault tolerance via quantum error correction2,3. However, recent theoretical work4,5 has shown that the accuracy of computation (based on expectation values of quantum observables) can be enhanced through an extrapolation of results from a collection of experiments of varying noise. Here we demonstrate this error mitigation protocol on a superconducting quantum processor, enhancing its computational capability, with no additional hardware modifications. We apply the protocol to mitigate errors in canonical single- and two-qubit experiments and then extend its application to the variational optimization6–8 of Hamiltonians for quantum chemistry and magnetism9. We effectively demonstrate that the suppression of incoherent errors helps to achieve an otherwise inaccessible level of accuracy in the variational solutions using our noisy processor. These results demonstrate that error mitigation techniques will enable substantial improvements in the capabilities of near-term quantum computing hardware.

Abstract:Quantum computers can exploit a Hilbert space whose dimension increases exponentially with the number of qubits. In experiment, quantum supremacy has recently been achieved by the Google team by using a noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) device with over 50 qubits. However, the question of what can be implemented on NISQ devices is still not fully explored, and discovering useful tasks for such devices is a topic of considerable interest. Hybrid quantum-classical algorithms are regarded as well-suited for execution on NISQ devices by combining quantum computers with classical computers, and are expected to be the first useful applications for quantum computing. Meanwhile, mitigation of errors on quantum processors is also crucial to obtain reliable results. In this article, we review the basic results for hybrid quantum-classical algorithms and quantum error mitigation techniques. Since quantum computing with NISQ devices is an actively developing field, we expect this review to be a useful basis for future studies.

Abstract:Quantum error mitigation has been proposed as a means to combat unwanted and unavoidable errors in near-term quantum computing without the heavy resource overheads required by fault-tolerant schemes. Recently, error mitigation has been successfully applied to reduce noise in near-term applications. In this work, however, we identify strong limitations to the degree to which quantum noise can be effectively 'undone' for larger system sizes. Our framework rigorously captures large classes of error-mitigation schemes in use today. By relating error mitigation to a statistical inference problem, we show that even at shallow circuit depths comparable to those of current experiments, a superpolynomial number of samples is needed in the worst case to estimate the expectation values of noiseless observables, the principal task of error mitigation. Notably, our construction implies that scrambling due to noise can kick in at exponentially smaller depths than previously thought. Noise also impacts other near-term applications by constraining kernel estimation in quantum machine learning, causing an earlier emergence of noise-induced barren plateaus in variational quantum algorithms and ruling out exponential quantum speed-ups in estimating expectation values in the presence of noise or preparing the ground state of a Hamiltonian.

Bounding the systematic error in quantum error mitigation due to model violation

Abstract:Quantum error mitigation is a promising route to achieving quantum utility, and potentially quantum advantage in the near-term. Many state-of-the-art error mitigation schemes use knowledge of the errors in the quantum processor, which opens the question to what extent inaccuracy in the error model impacts the performance of error mitigation. In this work, we develop a methodology to efficiently compute upper bounds on the impact of error-model inaccuracy in error mitigation. Our protocols require no additional experiments, and instead rely on comparisons between the error model and the error-learning data from which the model is generated. We demonstrate the efficacy of our methodology by deploying it on an IBM Quantum superconducting qubit quantum processor, and through numerical simulation of standard error models. We show that our estimated upper bounds are typically close to the worst observed performance of error mitigation on random circuits. Our methodology can also be understood as an operationally meaningful metric to assess the quality of error models, and we further extend our methodology to allow for comparison between error models. Finally, contrary to what one might expect we show that observable error in noisy layered circuits of sufficient depth is not always maximized by a Clifford circuit, which may be of independent interest.

A Practical Framework for Quantum Error Mitigation

Abstract:Quantum error mitigation is expected to play a crucial role in the practical applications of quantum machines for the foreseeable future. Thus it is important to put the numerous quantum error mitigation schemes proposed under a coherent framework that can highlight their underlying connections while providing guidance for their practical performance. In this article, we construct a general framework named linear quantum error mitigation that includes most of the state-of-the-art quantum error mitigation schemes. Within the framework, quantum error mitigation can be effectively viewed as extracting the error-mitigated state out of the noisy state, which introduces a new metric called extraction rate for indicating the cost-effectiveness of a given mitigation scheme. Using the framework, we have derived and compared the extraction rate, improvement in the fidelity and sampling overhead across various mitigation schemes under practical assumptions. The structure, insights and intuitions provided by the framework can serve as a basis for the further development of new schemes.

Scalability of quantum error mitigation techniques: from utility to advantage

Abstract:Error mitigation has elevated quantum computing to the scale of hundreds of qubits and tens of layers; however, yet larger scales (deeper circuits) are needed to fully exploit the potential of quantum computing to solve practical problems otherwise intractable. Here we demonstrate three key results that pave the way for the leap from quantum utility to quantum advantage: (1) we present a thorough derivation of random and systematic errors associated to the most advanced error mitigation strategies, including probabilistic error cancellation (PEC), zero noise extrapolation (ZNE) with probabilistic error amplification, and tensor-network error mitigation (TEM); (2) we prove that TEM (i) has the lowest sampling overhead among all three techniques under realistic noise, (ii) is optimal, in the sense that it saturates the universal lower cost bound for error mitigation, and (iii) is therefore the most promising approach to quantum advantage; (3) we propose a concrete notion of practical quantum advantage in terms of the universality of algorithms, stemming from the commercial need for a problem-independent quantum simulation device. We also establish a connection between error mitigation, relying on additional measurements, and error correction, relying on additional qubits, by demonstrating that TEM with a sufficient bond dimension works similarly to an error correcting code of distance 3. We foresee that the interplay and trade-off between the two resources will be the key to a smooth transition between error mitigation and error correction, and hence between near-term and fault-tolerant quantum computers. Meanwhile, we argue that quantum computing with optimal error mitigation, relying on modest classical computer power for tensor network contraction, has the potential to reach larger scales in accurate simulation than classical methods alone.

Abstract:Quantum error mitigation (QEM) is vital for noisy intermediate-scale quantum(NISQ) devices. While most conventional QEM schemes assume discrete gate-basedcircuits with noise appearing either before or after each gate, the assumptionsare inappropriate for describing realistic noise that may have stronggate-dependence and complicated nonlocal effects, and general computing modelssuch as analog quantum simulators. To address these challenges, we first extendthe scenario, where each computation process, being either digital or analog,is described by a continuous time evolution. For noise from imperfections ofthe engineered Hamiltonian or additional noise operators, we show it can beeffectively suppressed by a novel stochastic QEM method. Since our method onlyassumes accurate single qubit controls, it is applicable to all digital quantumcomputers and various analog simulators. Meanwhile, errors in the mitigationprocedure can be suppressed by leveraging the Richardson extrapolation method.As we numerically test our method with various Hamiltonians under energyrelaxation and dephasing noise and digital quantum circuits with additionaltwo-qubit crosstalk, we show an improvement of simulation accuracy by twoorders. We assess the resource cost of our scheme and conclude the feasibilityof accurate quantum computing with NISQ devices.

Abstract:Medium-scale quantum devices that integrate about hundreds of physical qubits are likely to be developed in the near future. However, these devices will lack the resources for realizing quantum fault tolerance. Therefore, the main challenge of exploring the advantage of quantum computation is to minimize the impact of device and control imperfections without complete logical encoding. Quantum error mitigation is a solution satisfying the requirement. Here, we demonstrate an error mitigation protocol based on gate set tomography and quasi-probability decomposition. One- and two-qubit circuits are tested on a superconducting device, and computation errors are successfully suppressed. Because this protocol is universal for digital quantum computers and algorithms computing expected values, our results suggest that error mitigation can be an essential component of near-future quantum computation.
Efficient separate quantification of state preparation errors and measurement errors on quantum computers and their mitigation

Abstract:Current noisy quantum computers have multiple types of errors, which can occur in the state preparation, measurement/readout, and gate operation, as well as intrinsic decoherence and relaxation. Partly motivated by the booming of intermediate-scale quantum processors, measurement and gate errors have been recently extensively studied, and several methods of mitigating them have been proposed and formulated in software packages (e.g., in IBM Qiskit). Despite this, the state preparation error and the procedure to quantify it have not yet been standardized, as state preparation and measurement errors are usually considered not directly separable. Inspired by a recent work of Laflamme, Lin, and Mor [Phys. Rev. A 106, 012439 (2022)], we propose a simple and resource-efficient approach to quantify separately the state preparation and readout error rates. With these two errors separately quantified, we also propose methods to mitigate them separately, especially mitigating state preparation errors with linear (with the number of qubits) complexity. As a result of the separate mitigation, we show that the fidelity of the outcome can be improved by an order of magnitude compared to the standard measurement error mitigation scheme. We also show that the quantification and mitigation scheme is resilient against gate noise and can be immediately applied to current noisy quantum computers. To demonstrate this, we present results from cloud experiments on IBM's superconducting quantum computers. The results indicate that the state preparation error rate is also an important metric for qubit metrology that can be efficiently obtained.

Abstract:Quantum optimization algorithms offer a promising route to finding the ground states of target Hamiltonians on near-term quantum devices. Nonetheless, it remains necessary to limit the evolution time and circuit depth as much as possible, since otherwise decoherence will degrade the computation. Even when this is done, there always exists a non-negligible error in estimates of the ground state energy. Here we present a scalable extrapolation approach to mitigating this algorithmic error, which significantly improves estimates obtained using three well-studied quantum optimization algorithms: quantum annealing (QA), the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE), and the quantum imaginary time evolution (QITE) at fixed evolution time or circuit depth. The approach is based on extrapolating the annealing time to infinity or the variance of estimates to zero. The method is reasonably robust against noise, and for Hamiltonians which only involve few-body interactions, the additional computational overhead is an increase in the number of measurements by a constant factor. Analytic derivations are provided for the quadratic convergence of estimates of energy as a function of time in QA, and the linear convergence of estimates as a function of variance in all three algorithms. We have verified the validity of these approaches through both numerical simulation and experiments on IBM quantum machines. This work suggests a promising new way to enhance near-term quantum computing through classical post-processing.

Abstract:To achieve the practical applications of near-term noisy quantum devices, low-cost ways to mitigate the noise damages in the devices are essential. In many applications, the noiseless state we want to prepare is often a pure state, which has recently inspired a range of purification-based quantum error mitigation proposals. The existing proposals either are limited to the suppressions of only the leading-order state preparation errors, or require a large number of long-range gates that might be challenging to implement depending on the qubit architecture. This article will provide an overview of the different purification-based quantum error mitigation schemes and propose a resource-efficient scheme that can correct state preparation errors up to any order while requiring only half of the qubits and less than half of the long-range gates compared to before.

Abstract:In quantum computing, noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices offer unprecedented computational capabilities but are vulnerable to errors, notably measurement inaccuracies that impact computation accuracy. This study explores the efficacy of error mitigation techniques in improving quantum circuit performance on NISQ devices. Techniques such as dynamic decoupling (DD), twirled readout error extraction (T-REx) and zero-noise extrapolation (ZNE) are examined through extensive experimentation on an ideal simulator, IBM Kyoto, and IBM Osaka quantum computers. Results reveal significant performance discrepancies across scenarios, with error mitigation techniques notably enhancing both estimator result and variance values, aligning more closely with ideal simulator outcomes. The comparison results with ideal simulator (having expected result value 0.8284) shows that T-Rex has improved results on IBM Kyoto and enhanced average expected result value from 0.09 to 0.35. Similarly, DD has improved average expected result values from 0.2492 to 0.3788 on IBM Osaka. These findings underscore the critical role of error mitigation in bolstering quantum computation reliability. The results suggest that selection of mitigation technique depends upon quantum circuit and its depth, type of hardware and operations to be performed.

Abstract:Near-term quantum computers have been built as intermediate-scale quantum devices and are fragile against quantum noise effects, namely, NISQ devices. Traditional quantum-error-correcting codes are not implemented on such devices and to perform quantum computation in good accuracy with these machines we need to develop alternative approaches for mitigating quantum computational errors. In this work, we propose quantum error mitigation (QEM) scheme for quantum computational errors which occur due to couplings with environments during gate operations, i.e., decoherence. To establish our QEM scheme, first we estimate the quantum noise effects on single-qubit states and represent them as groups of quantum circuits, namely, quantum-noise-effect circuit groups. Then our QEM scheme is conducted by subtracting expectation values generated by the quantum-noise-effect circuit groups from that obtained by the quantum circuits for the quantum algorithms under consideration. As a result, the quantum noise effects are reduced, and we obtain approximately the ideal expectation values via the quantum-noise-effect circuit groups and the numbers of elementary quantum circuits composing them scale polynomial with respect to the products of the depths of quantum algorithms and the numbers of register bits. To numerically demonstrate the validity of our QEM scheme, we run noisy quantum simulations of qubits under amplitude damping effects for four types of quantum algorithms. Furthermore, we implement our QEM scheme on IBM Q Experience processors and examine its efficacy. Consequently, the validity of our scheme is verified via both the quantum simulations and the quantum computations on the real quantum devices.
