Abstract:We show that many-body fermionic non-Hermitian systems require two distinct sets of topological invariants to describe the topology of energy bands and quantum states respectively, with the latter yet to be explored. We identify 10 symmetry classes -- determined by particle-hole, linearized time-reversal, and linearized chiral symmetries. Each class has topological invariant associated with each dimension, dictating the topology of quantum states. These findings pave the way for deeper understanding of the topological phases of many-body non-Hermitian systems.

Abstract:The search for novel topological states of matter remains to be a research focus in the past several decades. While a topology theory based on Bloch bands is thoroughly investigated in systems with finite-range hopping, mostly in the context of condensed matter physics, here we study a generalized one-dimensional Su-SchriefferHeeger model with semi-infinite long-range hopping, and demonstrate another type of topological phase referred to as a Hermitian non-Bloch topological phase. This phase presents a pair of symmetry-protected edge modes, and can be characterized by a topological invariant defined upon real-space wave functions. Interestingly, we also find a large number of localized bulk modes near the band edges, residing at specific positions determined by the ratio between hopping range and system size. The proposed phenomena of a Hermitian non-Bloch topological phase can be realized in metamaterials such as topolectrical circuits and mechanical oscillator lattices.

Abstract:The synergy between non-Hermitian concepts and topological ideas have led to very fruitful activity in the recent years. Their interplay has resulted in a wide variety of new non-Hermitian topological phenomena being discovered. In this review, we present the key principles underpinning the topological features of non-Hermitian phases. Using paradigmatic models -- Hatano-Helson, non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger and non-Hermitian Chern insulator -- we illustrate the central features of non-Hermitian topological systems, including exceptional points, complex energy gaps and non-Hermitian symmetry classification. We discuss the non-Hermitian skin effect and the notion of the generalized Brillouin zone, which allows restoring the bulk-boundary correspondence. Using concrete examples, we examine the role of disorder, present the linear response framework, and analyze the Hall transport properties of non-Hermitian topological systems. We also survey the rapidly growing experimental advances in this field. Finally, we end by highlighting possible directions which, in our view, may be promising for explorations in the near future.

Topological phases in discrete stochastic systems

Abstract:Topological invariants have proved useful for analyzing emergent function as they characterize a property of the entire system, and are insensitive to local details, disorder, and noise. They support edge states, which reduce the system response to a lower dimensional space and offer a mechanism for the emergence of global cycles within a large phase space. Topological invariants have been heavily studied in quantum electronic systems and been observed in other classical platforms such as mechanical lattices. However, this framework largely describes equilibrium systems within an ordered crystalline lattice, whereas biological systems are often strongly non-equilibrium with stochastic components. We review recent developments in topological states in discrete stochastic models in 1d and 2d systems, and initial progress in identifying testable signature of topological states in molecular systems and ecology. These models further provide simple principles for targeted dynamics in synthetic systems or in the engineering of reconfigurable materials. Lastly, we describe novel theoretical properties of these systems such as the necessity for non-Hermiticity in permitting edge states, as well as new analytical tools to reveal these properties. The emerging developments shed light on fundamental principles for non-equilibrium systems and topological protection enabling robust biological function.

Dynamical Classification of Topological Quantum Phases

Abstract:Topological phase of matter is now a mainstream of research in condensed matter physics, of which the classification, synthesis, and detection of topological states have brought excitements over the recent decade while remain incomplete with ongoing challenges in both theory and experiment. Here we propose to establish a universal non-equilibrium characterization of the equilibrium topological quantum phases classified by integers, and further propose the high-precision dynamical schemes to detect such states. The framework of the dynamical classification theory consists of basic theorems. First, we uncover that classifying a d-dimensional (dD) gapped topological phase of generic multibands can reduce to a (d-1)D invariant defined on so-called band inversion surfaces (BISs), rendering a bulk-surface duality which simplifies the topological characterization. Further, we show in quenching across phase boundary the (pseudo) spin dynamics to exhibit unique topological patterns on BISs, which are attributed to the post-quench bulk topology and manifest a dynamical bulk-surface correspondence. For this the topological phase is classified by a dynamical topological invariant measured from an emergent dynamical spin-texture field on the BISs. Applications to quenching experiments on feasible models are proposed and studied, demonstrating the new experimental strategies to detect topological phases with high feasibility. This work opens a broad new direction to classify and detect topological phases by non-equilibrium quantum dynamics.

Abstract:We study the quantum phase transitions (QPTs) in the Kitaev spin model on a triangle-honeycomb lattice. In addition to the ordinary topological QPTs between Abelian and non-Abelian phases, we find new QPTs which can occur between two phases belonging to the same topological class, namely, either two non-Abelian phases with the same Chern number or two Abelian phases with the same Chern number. Such QPTs result from the singular behaviors of the nonlocal spin-spin correlation functions at the critical points.

Abstract:We develop a theoretical framework for the classification and construction of symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases, which are a special class of zero-temperature phases of strongly interacting gapped quantum many-body systems that exhibit topological properties. The framework unifies various proposals for the classification of SPT phases, including the group (super-)cohomology proposal, the (spin-)cobordism proposal, the Freed-Hopkins proposal, and the Kitaev proposal. The power of the framework is demonstrated in a number of applications: (1) the classification and construction of 3D fermionic SPT phases in Wigner-Dyson classes A and AII with glide symmetry, (2) the classification and construction of 3D bosonic SPT phases with space-group symmetries for all 230 space groups, (3) the derivation of a Mayer-Vietoris sequence relating the classification of SPT phases with and without reflection symmetry, and (4) an interpretation of the structure of general crystalline SPT phases via the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence. The framework is based on Kitaev's idea that short-range entangled states form what are known as $\Omega$-spectra in the sense of algebraic topology, and models the classification of SPT phases by what are called generalized cohomology theories.
Non-Hermitian extensions of higher-order topological phases and their biorthogonal bulk-boundary correspondence

Abstract:Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, which describe a wide range of dissipative systems, and higher-order topological phases, which exhibit novel boundary states on corners and hinges, comprise two areas of intense current research. Here we investigate systems where these frontiers merge and formulate a generalized biorthogonal bulk-boundary correspondence, which dictates the appearance of boundary modes at parameter values that are, in general, radically different from those that mark phase transitions in periodic systems. By analyzing the interplay between corner/hinge, edge/surface and bulk degrees of freedom we establish that the non-Hermitian extensions of higher-order topological phases exhibit an even richer phenomenology than their Hermitian counterparts and that this can be understood in a unifying way within our biorthogonal framework. Saliently this works in the presence of the non-Hermitian skin effect, and also naturally encompasses genuinely non-Hermitian phenomena in the absence thereof.

Exceptional Second-Order Topological Insulators

Abstract:Point-gap topological phases of non-Hermitian systems exhibit exotic boundary states that have no counterparts in Hermitian systems. Here, we develop classification of second-order point-gap topological phases with reflection symmetry. Based on this classification, we propose exceptional second-order topological insulators, exhibiting second-order boundary states stabilized by point-gap topology. As an illustrative example, we uncover a two-dimensional exceptional second-order topological insulator with point-gapless corner states. Furthermore, we identify a three-dimensional exceptional second-order topological insulator that features hinge states with isolated exceptional points, representing second-order topological phases intrinsic to non-Hermitian systems. Our work enlarges the family of point-gap topological phases in non-Hermitian systems.

Abstract:A striking feature of non-Hermitian systems is the presence of two different types of topology. One generalizes Hermitian topological phases, and the other is intrinsic to non-Hermitian systems, which are called line-gap topology and point-gap topology, respectively. Whereas the bulk-boundary correspondence is a fundamental principle in the former topology, its role in the latter has not been clear yet. This Letter establishes the bulk-boundary correspondence in the point-gap topology in non-Hermitian systems. After revealing the requirement for point-gap topology in the open boundary conditions, we clarify that the bulk point-gap topology in open boundary conditions can be different from that in periodic boundary conditions. On the basis of real space topological invariants and the $K$-theory, we give a complete classification of the open boundary point-gap topology with symmetry and show that the nontrivial open boundary topology results in robust and exotic surface states.

Composite Quantum Phases in Non-Hermitian Systems

Abstract:Non-Hermitian systems have attracted considerable interest in recent years owing to their unique topological properties that are absent in Hermitian systems. While such properties have been thoroughly characterized in free fermion models, they remain an open question for interacting bosonic systems. In this work, we present a precise definition of quantum phases for non-Hermitian systems and propose a new family of phases referred to as composite quantum phases. We demonstrate the existence of these phases in a one-dimensional spin-$1$ system and show their robustness against perturbations through numerical simulations. Furthermore, we investigate the phase diagram of our model, indicating the extensive presence of these new phases in non-Hermitian systems. Our work establishes a new framework for studying and constructing quantum phases in non-Hermitian interacting systems, revealing exciting possibilities beyond the single-particle picture.

Non-Hermitian Topology in Hermitian Topological Matter

Abstract:Non-Hermiticity leads to distinctive topological phenomena absent in Hermitian systems. However, connection between such intrinsic non-Hermitian topology and Hermitian topology has remained largely elusive. Here, considering the bulk and boundary as an environment and system, we demonstrate that anomalous boundary states in Hermitian topological insulators exhibit non-Hermitian topology. We study the self-energy capturing the particle exchange between the bulk and boundary, and demonstrate that it detects Hermitian topology in the bulk and induces non-Hermitian topology at the boundary. As an illustrative example, we show the non-Hermitian topology and concomitant skin effect inherently embedded within chiral edge states of Chern insulators. We also find the emergence of hinge states within effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonians at surfaces of three-dimensional topological insulators. Furthermore, we comprehensively classify our correspondence across all the tenfold symmetry classes of topological insulators and superconductors. Our work uncovers a hidden connection between Hermitian and non-Hermitian topology, and provides an approach to identifying non-Hermitian topology in quantum matter.

Abstract:Topology of non-Hermitian systems is drastically shaped by the non-Hermitian skin effect, which leads to the generalized bulk-boundary correspondence that replaces the conventional one. The essential part in formulations of bulk-boundary correspondence is a general and computable definition of topological invariants. In this paper, we introduce a construction of non-Hermitian topological invariants based directly on real-space wavefunctions, which provides a general and straightforward approach for determining non-Hermitian topology. As an illustration, we apply this formulation to several representative models of non-Hermitian systems, efficiently obtaining their topological invariants in the presence of non-Hermitian skin effect. Our formulation also provides a surprisingly simple dual picture of the generalized Brillouin zone of non-Hermitian systems, leading to a unique perspective of bulk-boundary correspondence.
Topological Phases in One-Dimensional Nonreciprocal Superlattices

Abstract:Non-Hermitian topological systems have been shown to exhibit many interesting properties. However, due to the presence of complex energy spectra and non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE), the topological edge states will be dynamically unstable and unresolvable from the bulk states which are also localized at the boundaries. Here we propose a one-dimensional nonreciprocal superlattice model in which topological phases are solely induced by the modulated asymmetric hopping amplitude. Most importantly, we can obtain robust real energy spectra, and in the meanwhile, eliminate the NHSE both in the commensurate and incommensurate lattices by tuning the modulation. Thus the topological zero and nonzero energy edge states are stable and distinguishable from the bulk states, which would definitely facilitate the experimental identifications of non-Hermitian topological phases. We further propose a practical scheme to realize this nonreciprocal model by exploiting electrical circuits.
On Topology of the Moduli Space of Gapped Hamiltonians for Topological Phases

Abstract:The moduli space of gapped Hamiltonians that are in the same topological phase is an intrinsic object that is associated to the topological order. The topology of these moduli spaces is used recently in the construction of Floquet codes. We propose a systematical program to study the topology of these moduli spaces. In particular, we use effective field theory to study the cohomology classes of these spaces, which includes and generalizes the Berry phase. We discuss several applications to studying phase transitions. We show that nontrivial family of gapped systems with the same topological order can protect isolated phase transitions in the phase diagram, and we argue that the phase transitions are characterized by screening of topological defects. We argue that family of gapped systems obey a version of bulk-boundary correspondence. We show that family of gapped systems in the bulk with the same topological order can rule out family of gapped systems on the boundary with the same topological boundary condition, constraining phase transitions on the boundary.

Non-chiral non-Bloch invariants and topological phase diagram in non-unitary quantum dynamics without chiral symmetry

Abstract:The non-Bloch topology leads to the emergence of various counter-intuitive phenomena in non-Hermitian systems under the open boundary condition (OBC), which can not find a counterpart in Hermitian systems. However, in the non-Hermitian system without chiral symmetry, being ubiquitous in nature, exploring its non-Bloch topology has so far eluded experimental effort. Here by introducing the concept of non-chiral non-Bloch invariants, we theoretically predict and experimentally identify the non-Bloch topological phase diagram of a one-dimensional (1D) non-Hermitian system without chiral symmetry in discrete-time non-unitary quantum walks of single photons. Interestingly, we find that such topological invariants not only can distinguish topologically distinct gapped phases, but also faithfully capture the corresponding gap closing in open-boundary spectrum at the phase boundary. Different topological regions are experimentally identified by measuring the featured discontinuities of the higher moments of the walker's displacement, which amazingly match excellently with our defined non-Bloch invariants. Our work provides a useful platform to study the interplay among topology, symmetries and the non-Hermiticity.

Characterizing the topological properties of one-dimensional non-hermitian systems without the Berry-Zak phase

Abstract:A new method is proposed to predict the topological properties of one-dimensional periodic structures in wave physics, including quantum mechanics. From Bloch waves, a unique complex valued function is constructed, exhibiting poles and zeros. The sequence of poles and zeros of this function is a topological invariant that can be linked to the Berry-Zak phase. Since the characterization of the topological properties is done in the complex plane, it can easily be extended to the case of non-hermitian systems. The sequence of poles and zeros allows to predict topological phase transitions.

Topological Phases in Non-Hermitian Aubry-André-Harper Models

Abstract:Topological phases have recently witnessed a rapid progress in non-Hermitian systems. Here we study a one-dimensional non-Hermitian Aubry-Andre-Harper model with imaginary periodic or quasiperiodic modulations. We demonstrate that the non-Hermitian off-diagonal AAH models can host zero-energy modes at the edges. In contrast to the Hermitian case, the zero-energy mode can be localized only at one edge. Such a topological phase corresponds to the existence of a quarter winding number defined by eigenenergy in momentum space. We further find the coexistence of a zero-energy mode located only at one edge and topological nonzero energy edge modes characterized by a generalized Bott index. In the incommensurate case, a topological non-Hermitian quasicrystal is predicted where all bulk states and two topological edge states are localized at one edge. Such topological edge modes are protected by the generalized Bott index. Finally, we propose an experimental scheme to realize these non-Hermitian models in electric circuits. Our findings add a new direction for exploring topological properties in Aubry-Andre-Harper models.

Abstract:Abstract Despite the extensive studies of topological states, their characterization in strongly nonlinear classical systems has been lacking. In this work, we identify the proper definition of Berry phase for nonlinear bulk waves and characterize topological phases in one-dimensional (1D) generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations in the strongly nonlinear regime, where the general nonlinearities are beyond Kerr-like interactions. Without utilizing linear analysis, we develop an analytic strategy to demonstrate the quantization of nonlinear Berry phase due to reflection symmetry. Mode amplitude itself plays a key role in nonlinear modes and controls topological phase transitions. We then show bulk-boundary correspondence by identifying the associated nonlinear topological edge modes. Interestingly, anomalous topological modes decay away from lattice boundaries to plateaus governed by fixed points of nonlinearities. Our work opens the door to the rich physics between topological phases of matter and nonlinear dynamics.

Abstract:The bulk-boundary correspondence is among the central issues of non-Hermitian topological states. We show that a previously overlooked "non-Hermitian skin effect" necessitates redefinition of topological invariants in a generalized Brillouin zone. The resultant phase diagrams dramatically differ from the usual Bloch theory. Specifically, we obtain the phase diagram of the non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, whose topological zero modes are determined by the non-Bloch winding number instead of the Bloch-Hamiltonian-based topological number. Our work settles the issue of the breakdown of conventional bulk-boundary correspondence and introduces the non-Bloch bulk-boundary correspondence.
