Abstract:Hydrogen bonding plays an essential role in biological processes by stabilizing proteins and lipid structures as well as controlling the speed of enzyme catalyzed reactions. Dimethyl sulfoxide-water (DMSO-H2O) solution serves as a classical model system by which the direct and indirect effects of hydrogen bonding between water hydrogens and the sulfoxide functional group can be explored. The complex transition from self-bonding to heterogeneous bonding is important, and multiple spectroscopic approaches are needed to provide a detailed assessment of those interactions. In this report, for the first time, hyper-Raman scattering was successfully employed to investigate molecular interactions in DMSO-H2O system. We measured the improper blueshift of the C-S and C-H stretching modes of DMSO caused by partial charge transfer and enhanced bond polarization. By detecting differences in the frequency shifts of C-S and C-H modes for low DMSO concentrations (<33 mol%) we find evidence of the intermolecular bonds between water and the DMSO methyl groups. We exploit the high sensitivity of hyper-Raman scattering to the low frequency librations of H2O to observe a change in librational mode population providing insight into existing questions about the coordination of H2O around DMSO molecules and the formation of the H2O shell around DMSO molecules proposed in prior simulation studies. These results demonstrate that hyper-Raman spectroscopy can be a practical spectroscopic technique to study the intermolecular bonding of model systems and test claims about model system bonding generated by theoretical calculations.

Abstract:Pure NN-dimethylformamide (DMF) and DMF-water mixtures are studied by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. An OPLS all-atom force field is used for the simulation of DMF, revealing the local order and formation of the weak hydrogen bond of C-(HO)-O-..., and TIP5P is adopted for the simulation of water and is compared with the latest X-ray and neutron diffraction experiment. Solution properties of DMF-water mixtures are investigated using radial distribution functions (RDFs) and hydrogen bonding properties. A significant composition dependence, which is attributed to the prevailing influence of the strongly polarizable amido of DMF and the clustering feature of water, is observed in the simulation. In addition, NMR experiments of DMF-water mixtures are used for the discussion of the hydrogen bonding effect. The results of the simulation are adopted to explain the NMR experiments by hydrogen bonding analysis. As a result, the magnetic anisotropy of the amido group is considered to play an important role in the chemical shift.

Abstract:In practical use, ionic liquids (ILs) often mix with cosolvents to reduce the high polarity, large viscosity and high cost of pure ILs. Hydrogen-bonding interactions greatly influence the properties of IL-cosolvent system. In this work, the interactions between an IL 1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([BMMIM][BF4]) and DMSO have been investigated by attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Excess infrared spectroscopy and two-dimensional (2D) correlation infrared spectroscopy were applied to analyze the infrared spectra. It is found that: 1) Hydrogen-bonding interaction is the main cause that induces the infrared spectra change of v(CH) and v(CD). 2) The hydrogen-bonding interactions involving C4,5–H change prior to that of the alkyl CH in [BMMIM][BF4]. 3) The hydrogen atoms in the CH3 attached to N3 are more preferred to be hydrogen-bond donors than the other hydrogen atoms in the [BMMIM]+ cation. 4) The hydrogen-bonds in the [BMMIM]+−[BF4]− and [BMMIM][BF4]−DMSO complexes are the closed shell interaction and are electrostatic dominant.

Abstract:The structure and hydrogen-bond interaction property of water and a model ionic liquid (IL): 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([BMIM][BF4]) were studied using the combination of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The O-D stretching vibration region of the deuterated water was an area of special focus. Excess infrared spectroscopy with enhanced resolution was applied to analyse the original infrared spectra of nu(O-D). It is found that: (1) [BMIM][BF4] forms stable hydrogen-bonds with water in the mixture. (2) The hydrogen-bonds are weak strength, closed shell and electrostatic dominant interactions. The preferred interaction site of [BMIM](+) cation is the hydrogen atom at the C2. (3) Cage hexamer water, cyclic tetramer water, cyclic trimer water, ion cluster-water complex, ion pair-water, and anion-water complexes are identified in the mixture. When the mole fraction of D2O(x(D2O)) is larger than 0.9, ion cluster and ion pair were broken apart into individual cations and anions. The cage hexamer water, cyclic tetramer water, and cyclic trimer water disappear at x(D2O) < 0.8, 0.5, and 0.3, respectively. H2O Trimer: Rigorous 12D Quantum Calculations of Intermolecular Vibrational States, Tunneling Splittings, and Low-Frequency Spectrum

Abstract:Water trimer, as the smallest water cluster in which the three-body interactions can manifest, is arguably the most important hydrogen-bonded trimer. We present the methodology that for the first time allows rigorous twelve-dimensional (12D) quantum calculation of its intermolecular vibration-tunneling eigenstates, with the monomers treated as rigid. These 12D eigenstates are used to simulate the low-frequency absorption spectrum of the trimer, for direct comparison with the measured far-infrared (FIR) spectrum of water trimer in helium nanodroplets. The 12D calculations reveal weak coupling between the large-amplitude torsional and intermolecular stretching vibrations. The calculated torsional tunneling splittings are in excellent agreement with spectroscopic results. There are visible differences between the spectrum simulated using the 12D eigenstates and that based on our earlier 9D calculations where the stretching vibrations are not included. The peaks in the 12D spectrum are generally shifted to slightly lower energies relative to those in the 9D spectrum, as well as the measured FIR spectrum, and are often split by intermolecular stretch-bend Fermi resonances.

Abstract:Pyrrolidinium-based ionic liquids (ILs) demonstrate multiple irreplaceable features. One key to a better understanding of their unique properties is spectroscopic tools combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations to study their structure features. In this regard, we investigated the structure features of four N-alkyl-N-methyl-pyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([CnMPyr] [Tf2N], n = 3, 4, 6 and 8) ILs and ethanol mixtures using infrared spectroscopy (IR) and DFT calculations. Excess and twodimensional correlation spectroscopy were employed to progressively enhance the infrared resolution and extract the structural information of the binary liquid systems from the O -D stretching vibrational region (v(O -D)) of the CD3CD2OD hydroxyl group. The mixing process is non-ideal, and different interaction complexes (the alcohol cyclic trimer/tetramer/larger multimers, anion -ethanol, ion pair -ethanol, and ion cluster -ethanol complexes) were identified. With increasing [CnMPyr] [Tf2N], the cyclic ethanol multimers were gradually broken apart, with the larger cyclic multimers vanishing first. For the hydrogen bonded complex between IL and ethanol, the anion -ethanol complex appeared first, followed by the ion pair -ethanol complex. The ion cluster -ethanol appeared lastly in the mixture. The hydrogen-bonds with weak strength, closed shells and electrostatically dominant characteristics were found in different complexes.(C) 2022 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this work, the structure and interaction properties of the mixtures of a task specific ionic liquid (TSIL) 1-propylnitrile-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([PCNMIM][Tf2N]) and chloroform (CDCl3) were elucidated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Excess infrared spectroscopy was applied to analyse the original infrared spectra. The main conclusions are: (1) stable hydrogen-bonding complexes are found in the mixtures, and they are the primary cause of the gradual shift of v(CH) of the [PCNMIM]+ cation. The hydrogen-bonds related to the aromatic CH are strengthened, while those related to the alkyl CH are weakened by the addition of CDCl3. (2) A number of species in the binary mixtures were identified, namely, ion cluster–CDCl3, ion pair–CDCl3, ion pair and ion cluster. CDCl3 cannot break apart the strong electronic interaction between [PCNMIM]+ and [Tf2N]− but can break apart the ion cluster into ion pair throughout the investigated concentration range. (3) Several hydrogen-bonds are identified in the ion cluster–CDCl3, ion pair–CDCl3, ion pair and ion cluster complexes. They are weak strength, closed shell and electrostatic dominant interactions. In addition, the hydrogen atom at the C2 site of the [PCNMIM]+ cation is the preferred interaction site.

Abstract:The hydrogen-bonding properties of binary systems consisting of a representative Bronsted acidic hydrophilic ionic liquid (IL) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoracetate ([Bmim] [CF3CO2]) and a cosolvent, water or methanol, over the entire concentration range have been investigated by methods of attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy, H-1 NMR spectroscopy, and quantum chemical calculations. It has been found that the hydrogen-bonding interactions between the anion [CF3CO2](-), rather than the cation, and the cosolvent molecules are dominant at low concentration of cosolvent. The H-bond interaction site between the IL anion and water/methanol is the O atom in the -COO group, while the -CF3 group makes a positive contribution by donating electron to the carboxylic group, forming a cooperative hydrogen-bonding system. For the cation [Bmim](+), although the C2-H is the favorable proton donor in H-bonding interactions, the water/methanol molecules form H-bonds with the alkyl C-H at low water/methanol concentration due to the stronger interaction between C2-H and [CF3CO2](-). Interestingly, we found that the interaction between methanol and the IL is stronger than that between water and the IL because the methyl group in methanol has a positive contribution to the formation of H-bonds. The following sequential order of interaction strength is established: [Bmim](+)-methanol-[CF3CO2](-) > [Bmim](+)-water-[CF3CO2](-) > [Bmim](+)-[CF3CO2](-) > [CF3CO2](-)-methanol > [CF3CO2](-)-water > [Bmim](+)-methanol > [Bmim](+)-water.

Abstract:Ether-functionalized ionic liquids (ILs) have attracted increasing attention in the fields of electrochemistry and energy; however, few fundamental studies of the microscopic properties of ether-functionalized ILs have been reported. In this work, the hydrogen bonding interactions between the ether-functionalized IL 1-methoxyethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (EOMIMTFSI) and co-solvents, chloroform (CHCl3), acetonitrile (CH3CN) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), were investigated at the whole concentration range by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), excess infrared spectroscopy, and quantum chemical calculations. The following conclusions were made: (1) during dilution with co-solvents, the hydrogen bonding interactions in the three systems were strengthened, and the strength of the hydrogen bonds decreased in the following order: EOMIMTFSI−DMSO > EOMIMTFSI−CHCl3 > EOMIMTFSI−CH3CN. (2) DMSO could disrupt the hydrogen bonding interactions between the cations and anions in EOMIMTFSI, and [EOMIM]+−DMSO complexes were observed in the excess infrared spectrums. CHCl3 and CH3CN were unable to disrupt the electrostatic interactions, and only ion cluster–co-solvent and ion pair–co-solvent complexes were observed. (3) The main interaction sites were different in the studied systems. In the systems of EOMIMTFSI−CHCl3 and EOMIMTFSI−DMSO, the main interaction sites between the co-solvent and cations were C2−H, whereas in the EOMIMTFSI−CH3CN system, the corresponding interaction site was C5−H.

Abstract:Three imidazolium-based ionic liquids of the type [Cnmim][NTf2] with varying alkyl chain lengths (n = 1, 2 and 8) at the 1 position of the imidazolium ring were studied applying IR, linear Raman, and multiplex CARS spectroscopy. The focus has been on the CH-stretching region of the imidazolium ring, which is supposed to carry information about a possible hydrogen bonding network in the ionic liquid. The measurements are compared to calculations of the corresponding anharmonic vibrational spectra for a cluster of [C2mim][NTf2] consisting of four ion pairs. The results support the hypothesis of weak hydrogen bonding involving the C(4)-H and C(5)-H groups and somewhat stronger hydrogen bonds of the C(2)-H groups.

The Methyl C-H Blueshift in N,N-dimethylformamide-water Mixtures Probed by Two-Dimensional Fourier-transform Infrared Spectroscopy.

Abstract:Two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy was used to study the composition-dependent spectral variations of the CH-stretching bands of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF)-water mixtures with XDMF ranging from 0.98 to 0.60. By a detailed correlation analysis of the spectral changes of the CH- and OH-stretching bands, it is found that the intensities of the CH and OH bands change in different ways when the water content is increased. It is also found that two different regions of the water content can be distinguished, in which the intensity changes have different signatures. A tentative explanation for how these phenomena might be related to structural changes in the mixture is proposed. The structural change of DMF induced by the water hydrogen bonded on the carbonyl group is supposed to be the possible origin of the methyl C–H blueshift instead of the direct C–H⋯O interactions before the hydrophobic hydration takes place.

Abstract:The recently developed efficient protocol to explicit quantum mechanical modeling of structure and IR spectra of liquids and solutions (S. A. Katsyuba, S. Spicher, T. P. Gerasimova, S. Grimme, J. Phys. Chem. B 2020, 124, 6664) is applied to ionic liquid (IL) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (EmimBr), its C2-deuterated analog [Emim-d]Br and its aqueous solutions. It is shown that the solvation strongly modifies frequencies and IR intensities of the CH/CD stretching vibrations (νCH/νCD) of the imidazolium ring. The main vibrational spectroscopic features of the neat IL are reproduced by the simulations for a cluster (EmimBr)9, in which all three imidazolium CH moieties of the solvated cation form short contacts with three Br- anions, and another two Br- anions are located on top and bottom of imidazolium ring. Cluster models of aqueous solutions reproduce the experimental vibrational frequencies of actual solutions, provided that the Br- anion of solvated contact ion pair (CIP) is situated on top of imidazolium ring, and CH/CD moieties of the latter participate in short contacts with surrounding water molecules. Both structural and spectroscopic analysis allow to interpret the short contacts CH/CD⋯Br- and CH/CD⋯OH2 as hydrogen bonds of approximately equal strength. Enthalpies of bonding of these liquid-state H-bonds, estimated with the use of empirical correlations, amount to ca. 1.4 kcal⋅mol-1, while the analogous estimates obtained for the gas-phase charged species [Emim]2Br+ increase to 5.6 kcal⋅mol-1. It is shown that formation of solvent-shared ion pair (SIP) in aqueous solution, where the counterions of IL are separated by two water molecules H-bonded to a Br- anion, produces frequency shifts ΔνCH/CD, strongly different from the case of CIP formation. This difference can be used for IR/Raman spectroscopic differentiation of the type of solvated ion pairs of EmimBr or other related ILs.

Abstract:Infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations have been applied to elucidate the hydrogen bonding interactions between water/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and a representative pyridinium-based ionic liquid, 1-butylpyridinium tetrafluoroborate ([BuPy][BF(4)]). It has been found that both solvents can interact with the BuPy(+) cation through the aromatic C-H. The strength of the H-bonds involving the aromatic C-H in water is similar to that in pure [BuPy][BF(4)], but is much stronger in DMSO. For DMSO, when it forms H-bonds with the BuPy(+) cation through its S=O group, its back-side methyl groups act as electron donors, while the butyl group of the cation acts as an electron acceptor. For water, when it forms the strong anion-HOH-anion complex, it can also form H-bonds with the aromatic C-H on the BuPy(+) cation. This is different from the imidazolium-based ionic liquid, where the strong anion-cation interaction and steric hindrance from the alkyls prevent water molecules from H-bonding with the aromatic C-H other than with the anion.

Abstract:Scientific research has witnessed an increasing fascination with ester-functionalized ionic liquids in recent years. These ester-functionalized ionic liquids are particularly attractive due to their superior biodegradability and potential applications, which surpass those of traditional ionic liquids. In actual use, it is common to blend these ionic liquids with co-solvents. However, there is currently a lack of research on the structures and interaction mechanisms of these mixtures. In this work, the hydrogen bonding interactions and microstructures of 1-acetoxyethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (AOEMIMTFSI) with various polar co-solvents (DMSO, CH3OH, CH3CN) were researched by combining infrared experiments and DFT calculations. The finding are as follows: (1) O atom in [TFSI]− primary interacts with C2−H in [AOEMIM]+, while the O or N atom in the co-solvents (DMSO, CH3OH, CH3CN) primarily interact with C4,5−H in [AOEMIM]+. (2) With the addition of co-solvents (DMSO‑d 6, CD3OD or CD3CN), the hydrogen bonding interactions associated with the v(imidazolium C−H) in the AOEMIMTFSI−DMSO‑d 6/CD3OD/CD3CN systems are strengthened. (3) The hydrogen bonding interactions between AOEMIMTFSI and DMSO are the strongest, followed by those between AOEMIMTFSI and CH3OH, while the hydrogen bonding interactions between AOEMIMTFSI and CH3CN are the weakest. (4) 2[AOEMIM]+[TFSI]−, 2[AOEMIM]+[TFSI]−−co-solvent, [AOEMIM]+[TFSI]−−co-solvent and [AOEMIM]+−co-solvent complexes were assigned through the analysis of excess spectra.

Abstract:Bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide ([FSI]−) and bis(trifluoromethyl)sulfonylimide ([TFSI]−)-based ionic liquids have potential applications in electrochemistry. However, some fundamental questions regarding their hydrogen bonding properties remain to be answered. In this work, the hydrogen bonding interactions between two [FSI]− and [TFSI]−-based ionic liquids and methanol (CH3OH) and their microscopic structure were comparatively investigated by infrared spectroscopy, excess spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations. Some conclusions can be drawn: (1) The hydrogen bonding interactions in the two systems are strengthened with the addition of CH3OH. Moreover, EOMIMFSI ([EOMIM]+, 1-methoxyethyl-3-methylimidazolium) can form stronger hydrogen bonds with CH3OH than EOMIMTFSI. (2) The excess peaks of v(O–H), v(aromatic C–Hs) and vas(S=O) show fixed positive and negative excess peaks, indicating distinct complexes. With combination of the excess spectra and quantum chemical calculations, the newly formed distinct complexes were assigned to the ion cluster-CH3OH, the ion pair-CH3OH, and isolated ion-CH3OH complexes. The microscopic structure of the two systems was also shown with dilution. (3) The C4–H in EOMIMFSI is the main interaction site interacting with CH3OH, while the C2–H in EOMIMTFSI is the main interaction site.

Trace of the Interesting “V”-Shaped Dynamic Mechanism of Interactions Between Water and Ionic Liquids

Abstract:The mixture of ionic liquid (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, bmimBF4) and water (2.5%, molar fraction) under isothermal conditions at 80 degrees C was investigated by FTIR spectroscopy and two-dimensional correlation infrared spectroscopy (2D-IR) methods. Three regions were focused: the OH stretching band of water (3755-3300 cm (-1)), the stretching band of CH on the imidazole ring (3300-3020 cm (-1)), and the BF stretching band of anions (1310-1260 cm (-1)). During this process, water was gradually evaporated as time passed, which produced influences on the interactions among cations, anions, and water molecules. In the FTIR analysis, we found an interesting "V"-shaped changing trend in peak areas of the C-H on the imidazole ring and the B-F stretching band; the inflection of the system was 913 s, gained through the "moving window" method. A two-step variation was accordingly found during this process. Hydrogen bonds formed by water molecules with cations or water molecules with anions were destroyed by the reduction of water, making a fall in the former period of "V" process, while electrostatic interactions newly formed between anions and cations leading to a rise during the latter period of this course. In this paper, various conformations formed among cations, anions, and water molecules were clearly assigned, and we managed to trace the whole dynamic mechanism of this isothermal process by 2D-IR techniques.
Infrared spectra of partially deuterated water dimers in the fundamental O-D stretch region

Abstract:Spectra of mixed H/D water dimers are studied in the mid-infrared region of the O-D stretch fundamental (2630-2800 cm-1) using a pulsed supersonic slit jet and a tunable optical parametric oscillator infrared source. Over 30 bands, belonging to nine of the ten possible isotopologues (only H2O-HOD is missed), are observed and analyzed. The implications for excited state tunneling splittings, lifetime effects, and vibrational shifts are discussed. These are the first significant new experimental results on (gas phase) mixed water dimers in over 25 years, and they are valuable for testing water dimer theoretical calculations, a field which continues to be of lively current interest.

Abstract:The combination of vibrational spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations provides a powerful tool to obtain insights into the molecular details of water structure and dynamics in the bulk and in aqueous solutions. Applying newly developed approaches to analyze correlations of charge currents, molecular dipole fluctuations, and vibrational motion in real and k-space, we compare results from nonpolarizable water models, widely used in biomolecular modeling, to ab initio molecular dynamics. For the first time, we unfold the infrared response of bulk water into contributions from correlated fluctuations in the three-dimensional, anisotropic environment of an average water molecule, from the OH-stretching region down to the THz regime. Our findings show that the absence of electronic polarizability in the force field model not only results in differences in dipolar couplings and infrared absorption but also induces artifacts into the correlated vibrational motion between hydrogen-bonded water molecules, specifically at the intramolecular bending frequency. Consequently, vibrational motion is partially ill-described with implications for the accuracy of non-self-consistent, a posteriori methods to add polarizability.
