Abstract:Lodging in cereal crops has often incurred a great deal of damage (14. 15, 41, 48, 57, 59, 73). Also, much labour is necessary to harvest the lodged plants. Therefore, lodging has been an important problem in crop culture. It usually occurs when excessive fertilizers, especially nitrogen, are supplied in the hope of gaining much grain (6, 17, 43, 48, 59, 71). As lodging is such a serious question in agriculture, investigations into the cause of lodging have been published from as far as the second half of the nineteen century, and extensive research has been done since then. Studies on the mechanism of lodging occurrence before the second world war were mainly centered on efforts to make it clear from the histological or morphological point of view. As a result of these studies it became clear that there are some morphologically distinctive characters between the culm of the lodging and the non-lodging plants (8, 9, 20, 25, 60, 66, 79, 80, 82, 83). Also, it was made clear that lodging is related to cultural conditions, such as soil fertility (40, 46), methods of fertilizers supply (11, 12, 21, 40, 46, 54, 58, 67, 69), varieties (2, 18, 26, 49, 53), sowing quantities (9, 21, 26, 43, 72) and the depth of irrigated water (1, 34, 63, 68, 69). It was also discovered that lodging occurred in some years but not in others when the same cultural method was continued (45, 48, 69, 80). One of the reasons for this can be attributed to the climatic conditions of the year which greatly affects the growth conditions of the plants (11, 80). But whether lodging will occur or not is more directly determined by the amount of rain fall and/or the wind after heading (24, 56, 69, 75, 76). It is considered that if external forces are not applied to plants, they can stand on the land indefinitely (47). For these reasons, strenuous efforts have been made to elucidate the mechanism of lodging resistance.
