Abstract:This paper provides evidence that human unique nouns such as king constitute a peripheral group of lexemes within the word class of common nouns. In semantic definite contexts, they semantically resemble proper names with respect to monorefentiality and can therefore morphosyntactically behave like personal names. The properhood of inherently unique nouns has remained elusive in reference grammars and historical grammars of Romance languages. Different lines of diachronic and synchronic evidence support the properhood of human unique nouns: Differential object marking in Old Spanish, Old Portuguese, and Sicilian, possessive constructions in Old French, article-drop in unmodified prepositional phrases in Romanian, and proprial article in Old Romanian. By contrast, in Balearic Catalan, human and inanimate unique nouns morphosyntactically deviate both from proper names and non-unique nouns with respect to definite article forms. The findings reveal that properhood of human unique nouns is in line with an implicational scale based on the notion of dimensions of knowledge.

Abstract:Relations between noun modifiers or adnonimals and their head nouns, along with their distribution features, differentiate the stylistic features among languages, and distinguish text genres in a given language. Following a systematic and comprehensive description of adnominal constructions in modern Chinese, this paper explores their rank-frequency distribution properties against three models: the original Zipf’s law, the Zipf-Alekseev law and the Popescu-Altmann-Köhler (PAK) function, with acceptable result for the first and good results for the latter two. The PAK function as a function for stratified texts works well. The research findings validate the categorization in the paper and further prove that adnominals in modern Chinese are normal language units.

Abstract:This paper studies the morpho-syntax of proper names like die Deutsche Bank ‘the German Bank’ in German. Semantically, these types of proper names, called phrasal proper names here, refer to entities but have descriptive meaning. Lexically, they are frozen and morpho-syntactically, they are frozen or transparent depending on the phenomenon. To capture these hybrid properties, it is proposed that regular vocabulary items are taken from the lexicon, that these individual elements receive each a referential marker (i.e., an index), and that they are stored as a set in the lexicon. Second, these indexed elements build a regular structure during the syntactic derivation projecting the marker to the entire structure. As is clear from proper names in Italian, certain syntactic operations are sensitive to these markers. As a consequence, these operations cannot single out the individual parts (but only the entire structure). Regular vocabulary items and an ordinary derivation explain the transparent properties; the addition of referential markers accounts for the referentiality and the frozen characteristics. The optional presence of non-restrictive modifiers shows that these nominal structures can be quite complex. Given this discussion, it seems unlikely that the referentiality of phrasal proper names is located in the DP-level.

Abstract:This article argues that adnominal modifiers in a layered model of the noun phrase can be divided into two major subcategories: descriptive modifiers and discourse-referential modifiers. Whereas descriptive modifiers can be subdivided into classifying, qualifying, quantifying and localizing modifiers (Section 2), discourse-referential modifiers in the noun phrase are concerned with the status of entities as referents in the world of discourse (Section 3). I will pay particular attention to three issues: (i) formal reflections of the layered, semantic structure of the noun phrase (Section 4), (ii) the special relationship between localizing and discourse-referential modifiers (Section 5), and (iii) semantic and morphosyntactic parallels between modifier categories in the noun phrase and the clause (Section 6). In addition this sample-based typological study shows (contra Hawkins's Universal 20′) that there are languages with the adjective before and the demonstrative or numeral after the head noun. These word order patterns provide additional support for the layered model of the noun phrase defended here in that it can now be shown for the first time that all patterns that iconically reflect the layered structure of the simple noun phrase are actually attested in the languages of the world.

Abstract:The paper deals with the category of possession as a linguistic category and the semantics of English possessive substantive constructions. Possession is a linguistic universal, a fundamental linguistic category with a complex and heterogeneous meaning and a plane of expression, therefore there are several directions of its study in linguistics. In a broad sense, possession expresses spatial relations between two objects, when one of them is considered as an element of the “personal sphere” of another object, or when one object (person) has the right to own, use and dispose of another object. In this paper the author reveals relevant features of the category of possession (‘activity’ – ‘subordination’, ‘alienability’ – ‘inalienability’, ‘static’ – ‘dynamic’, ‘entry’ – ‘inclusion’) and outlines differences between possessive predicative and substantive constructions in English. It is noted that predicative constructions are unambiguous: the subject of the possessive relation is expressed, and the possessive information is embedded in the construction itself. Substantive constructions are polysemic: the object of the possessive relation is expressed, and possessive information is asserted. The paper also examines the main semantic relations of possessive substantive constructions and the peculiarities of their functioning. The English language demonstrates the variability of lexical and grammatical means of expressing possessive relations. Models that represent the semantic relation of possession in substantive constructions include pre-nominal genitive and the post-nominal genitive. English has two canonical constructions for attributive possession. The first one uses the clitic /-’s/ or a possessive pronoun and it is known as ‘the s-genitive’ (or ‘Saxon genitive’). The second one uses the preposition /of/ and it is known as ‘the of-genitive’. The choice of one or another design depends on various factors, such as: possessor’s belonging to the category of beings / non-beings; the number of the noun expressing the attribute; complexity of the attribute; the attribute / core significance, etc.

Abstract:This manuscript examines various types of bracketing paradoxes: classical "personal noun" constructions, parasynthetic compounds, agentive deverbal nouns, compound denominal adjectives, plural nouns with lexicalized modifiers, multiple auxiliary constructions, and German particle verb constructions. We argue that given a dependencybased view of both sentence and word structure, these bracketing puzzles become nonparadoxical. The morph catena is taken to be the fundamental unit of morphosyntax. A morph catena is A MORPH OR A COMBINATION OF MORPHS THAT ARE CONTINUOUS WITH RESPECT TO DOMINANCE. This notion is derived from its syntactic equivalent, the catena, which is defined as a word or a combination of words that are continuous with respect to dominance. Given an understanding of morphosyntax that acknowledges morph catenae, bracketing paradoxes are resolved by the ability of morph catenae to reach across words to include parts of words.
A corpus-based study on Chinese modification patterns of nouns across registers

Abstract:Nominal modification works to describe and restrict noun phrases, making the information delivery more vivid and precise. In English, the communicative functions of different modification patterns of head-nouns have been studied in a lot of corpus-based investigations of the written and the spoken registers, but few corpus-based register studies have been ever conducted in Chinese. This research takes the initiative attempt to conduct a corpus-based study on Chinese modification patterns across registers. A one-million-word corpus including both written and spoken Chinese is first built and all the modification patterns of noun phrases are extracted in Chunker, a self-developed colligation query and analysis tool. Through classification of modification patterns and statistical processing, the study displays the distributions of simple and complex modification patterns and the relationship between the frequency of modification patterns and the information density across registers and discusses the functional implication of such distributions and relationship under the guidance of Biber's register theory.

Allerdings ziehen die relevanten Untersuchungen nur selten grosere Mengen realsprachlichen Materials in Betracht, was es ihnen ermoglichen wurde, Regelmasigkeiten und Muster des realen Sprachgebrauchs mit quantitativen Methoden zu erschliesen. Auf der Grundlage der begrifflichen Werkzeuge der Dependenzgrammatik und mit Ruckgriff auf die Hamburger Dependenzbaumbank ruckt dieser Artikel die syntaktischen Beziehungen in einem grosen realsprachlichen Korpus in den Fokus, um so die syntaktischen Merkmale der Nomen zu bestimmen und dabei bisherige Forschungsbefunde empirisch zu bestatigen und zu erganzen. EnglishAs the most numerous and frequently used word class in German, the noun has been studied extensively. However, relevant discussions rarely take into account a large amount of real language material, which with the help of the quantitative method can help to find out the regularities of real language use. Using the conceptual tools of dependency grammar and the language corpus provided by the Hamburg dependency treebank, the present article especially considers the syntactic relations involving nouns in a large amount of real language material to determine the syntactic characteristics of nouns, and at the same time, to prove and supplement existing conclusions.

Abstract:This article deals with the analysis of the noun used in the English phraseology as it has the highest phraseological activity. The subject of special attention is a study of phraseological units with a phytonym component. The group of phraseological units with a phytonym component are the most frequently used one. Some phytonyms demonstrate unusual cultural connotations typical to this language. The importance of the plant world for people and the fact that they make analogies between humans and plants are reflected in the language. Results indicate that the choice of the properties of a particular plant as a prototype for re-interpretation is due to several reasons: on the one hand, the peculiarities of the human thinking process, which leads to the formation of similar images in different cultures; on the other hand, this choice depends on the cultural and historical development of the country, its geographical location and political structure.
Semantic and Morphosyntactic Differences among Nouns: A Template-Based and Modular Cognitive Model

Abstract:The noun category exhibits diverse dissimilarities, characterised at the semantic (e.g., countable/uncountable) or/and morphosyntactic (e.g., determined/determinerless) level, which may be more or less important depending on languages. In this paper, we would like to discuss those differences, which we named inter-word and inter-process morphosyntactic variations. The Riffian language served us as a reference in our enquiries, before referring to other languages to show how our discoveries could be applied to them. By putting in perspective those aspects, this led us to propose a formal mathematical model denoted as a Template-Based and Modular Cognitive model. The latter is able to predict the nonlinear dynamic mapping of lexical items onto morphological templates. The aims of this article are thus manifold and cover theoretical issues. We demonstrate that nouns are organised and distributed in modular cognitive sets, having their own morphological template and unmarked forms. The extent of these sets and their number as well as the template, are specific to each language. All sorts of markers can compose with the template, but some, namely countability markers, are prevalent among several languages with no relationship. This approach allows us to explain the marking discrepancies existing between different kinds of nouns (borrowed, proper, countable and uncountable nouns) for a given linguistic variety or between languages. The main assumption of this model is that these irregular markings are caused by a template shift, occurring when items undergo a process of word and meaning formation. Our contribution represents an initial stride toward understanding the fundamental patterns of morphosyntax and opens venues for applying this mathematical model with other behavioural and natural phenomena.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to offer a unified account of Place as a central theoretical notion across different disciplines. We show that while psychology, geography and other sciences have been converging to a unified view of this notion, linguistics still offers a fragmented perspective. Consequently, place names lack a full-fledged analysis that connects this category to the psychological concept of place. We propose to overcome this impasse by introducing a multi-modal Discourse Representation Theory (DRT) account of place as a conceptual construct and place concepts as specific instances of this construct. We show that current variants of DRT permit us to model place names and their senses, i.e., the meaning(s) that individuals associate with Sydney. We then model non-linguistic place concepts, i.e., the mental representation(s) that individuals can have of the city carrying this name. We present a model of the relation between linguistic meaning and conceptual content via the notion of anchoring relations applied to place. We pair this formal treatment with a morpho-syntactic account of place names building on current generative syntax treatments of proper names. Once we have a morpho-syntactic and semantic model of place names, we use a frame semantics treatment to account for lexical relations among place names. We test the overarching model on a set of recalcitrant problems afflicting current linguistic and multi-disciplinary treatments of place. These are the grammatical complexity and lexical content of place names, place concepts and their networks, and inter-subjective, communicative models of place in discourse. By solving these problems, our account integrates several frameworks (DRT, conceptual analysis, generative syntax, frame semantics) and connects several disciplines (linguistics, psychology, geographic information science, communication models) via a novel, multi-modal account of place. We conclude by discussing the theoretical and empirical import of these results.
Why do objects have many names? A study on word informativeness in language use and lexical systems

Abstract:Human lexicons contain many different words that speakers can use to refer to the same object, e.g., "purple" or "magenta" for the same shade of color. On the one hand, studies on language use have explored how speakers adapt their referring expressions to successfully communicate in context, without focusing on properties of the lexical system. On the other hand, studies in language evolution have discussed how competing pressures for informativeness and simplicity shape lexical systems, without tackling in-context communication. We aim at bridging the gap between these traditions, and explore why a soft mapping between referents and words is a good solution for communication, by taking into account both in-context communication and the structure of the lexicon. We propose a simple measure of informativeness for words and lexical systems, grounded in a visual space, and analyze color naming data for English and Mandarin Chinese. We conclude that optimal lexical systems are those where multiple words can apply to the same referent, conveying different amounts of information. Such systems allow speakers to maximize communication accuracy and minimize the amount of information they convey when communicating about referents in contexts.

Variation of Nonstandard English Articles Among Chinese Speakers of English

Abstract:Article use is highly variable and known as a cause of frequent problems among nonnative speakers of English. This study investigated the variation of article omission and overuse in academic writing among Chinese speakers of English. The researcher collected 188 short class reflection essays and used variable rule analysis to analyze them. The quantitative findings revealed that countable plural nouns favored the the omission. Also, NPs assumed to be known to the hearer and in the initial clause position favored a/an omission. NPs assumed to be known by the hearer favored overuse of the for zero articles. These results indicated that universal discourse property, L1 transfer, and information structure influenced article variation as the patterns were systematic rather than chaotic. The study concludes that variable rule analysis could provide interlanguage variation studies with valuable insights. Using the results, practitioners will be better equipped to understand why nonstandard articles occur. They will also be able to direct their learners' attention to the relationship between influential factors and nonstandard uses, increasing the learners' awareness of how to use articles correctly.

Abstract:This paper reports the results of an empirical study of the language produced by teachers in American university mathematics classrooms. One aspect of this discourse—the use of personal pronouns—is isolated to provide a clear illustration of the variety of contextual factors affecting the creation of this specific purpose language.Specifically, evidence is presented that suggests that teachers avoid third person pronouns; instead, they redefine or remap the semantic domains of the first and second person pronouns to include third person and indefinite reference. The analysis also indicates that there are five sets of discourse-defined semantic mappings for the pronoun we. Finally, various socioeducational factors that may be working to shape this aspect of linguistic use are examined.This study is a response to two lines of enquiry. First, it responds to a theoretical research concern to expand our understanding of how context interacts with grammar. Second, since we should not assume that pedagogical language is the same as “everyday English,” this study provides a baseline analysis of classroom language to inform the design of appropriate language learning materials for international teaching assistants and perhaps other teacher trainees.

Abstract:There are broad disagreements between existing models regarding the mental representations and processes involved in the "DEGREE ADVERB + PROPER NAME" construction, including disagreements regarding the semantics of the degree device, the category status of the proper name, the construction’s expressed meaning and its (non-)compositionality, and, crucially, the operation that holds between the degree device and the proper name. Our corpus-based investigation into two competing models from Construction Grammar and Formal Semantics shows that these models collectively make useful contributions to the scientific understanding of this construction, but neither is empirically adequate. Most importantly, we find that the construction participates in several non-predicted expressed meanings; multivariate analyses show that the three amenable to statistical analysis cluster with different semantic usage-features. We argue that the best way to account for the construction’s semantics-pragmatics is via a previously-dismissed cognitive mechanism: an enrichment-/strengthening-type operation whereby a pragmatically-supplied scale is added to the message.

Abstract:What's in a name, a poet once asked. To which we present this work, where we investigate the importance of a paper title in ensuring its best outcome. We queried astronomy papers using NASA ADS and ranked 6000 of them in terms of cheekiness level. We investigate the correlation between citation counts and (i) the presence of a colon, and (ii) cheekiness ranking. We conclude that colon matters in the anatomy of a paper title. So does trying to be cheeky, but we find that too much cheekiness can lead to cringefests. Striking the right balance is therefore crucial. May we recommend aiming for a level 4 cheekiness on a scale of 1-5.

A Contrastive Study of Shell Noun Use in English and Chinese Academic Articles

Abstract:A shell noun (SN) is a type of abstract noun whose pragmatic meaning is encapsulated within the context. The term "shell" suggests its capability to encapsulate and convey information. Previous studies have focused primarily on the textual and interpersonal functions of SNs, often neglecting the comparative analysis of shell noun usage in Chinese and English discourses. To address this gap, this study conducts a comparative analysis of the use of SNs in English and Chinese based on a self-established corpus comprising three groups: 30 Chinese research papers written by Chinese scholars from Foreign Language Teaching and Research (外语教学与研究), 30 English research papers written by Chinese scholars, and 30 English research papers written by native English scholars from Studies in Second Language Acquisition over the past five years. The results are analyzed in terms of the overall distribution of SNs, the structural distribution of shell noun patterns, high-frequency SNs, and the category distribution of SNs. The findings reveal a similarity in the use of SNs by Chinese scholars in their Chinese and English papers, while there is a significant difference in the use of SNs between Chinese scholars and native English scholars in English articles
An Experimental Investigation of Mass Noun Types and Article Usage

Abstract:Speakers of languages with article systems have to make different article choices in the case of mass versus countable nouns. This study addressed article use with different types of mass nouns (liquid, solid and abstract). It investigated: a) whether first language (L1) Arabic speakers used English articles accurately with mass nouns; and b) whether they were sensitive to different types of mass noun. To address these issues, the study recruited twenty-seven English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Saudi-Arabic speaking participants and five native speakers of English, who formed a control group. Members of the experimental group were proficient to the elementary level, according to the Oxford Quick Placement Test. A written forced-choice elicitation task was administered to test their article use. The findings showed that: a) the Arabic speakers performed similarly to the native speakers of English in liquid contexts, but differently in solid and abstract contexts; b) the Arabic speakers did not perform similarly across all types of mass nouns, as they were sensitive towards mass noun types; c) their article use was more accurate in liquid contexts than in solid and abstract contexts; and d) they faced difficulties using articles with mass nouns that can be pluralised in Arabic. These findings indicate that the use of articles with mass nouns should be examined in the light of their subtypes, as well as whether second language (L2) learners’ L1 pluralise them or not.
