Abstract:Land surface models intended for large-scale applications are often executed at coarse resolutions, and the sub-grid heterogeneity is usually ignored. Here, a spatial scaling algorithm that integrates the information of vegetation heterogeneity (land cover type and leaf area index) and surface topography (elevation, slope, relative azimuth (Raz) between the sun and the slope background, sky-view factor, and topographic wetness index), was proposed to correct errors in gross primary productivity (GPP) estimates at a coarse spatial resolution. An eco-hydrological model named BEPS-TerrainLab was used to simulate GPP at 30 and 480 m resolutions for 16 mountainous watersheds selected globally. Results showed that an obvious improvement on GPP estimates at 480 m resolution was achieved after the correction in comparison with GPP modeled at 30 m resolution, with the determination coefficient increased by 0.38 and mean bias error reduced by 203gCm(-2) yr(-1). The combination of all the seven factors made the largest improvement for GPP estimation at 480 m resolution, suggesting that a larger improvement would be achieved when more factors of surface heterogeneity are considered. More specifically, our results indicated that five factors, including land cover type and leaf area index regarded as integrated outcomes of all the environmental conditions, Raz and sky-view factor associated with radiation redistribution, and slope related to soil water redistribution, were especially important in the spatial scaling procedure. This study suggests that incorporating the information of surface heterogeneity into the spatial scaling algorithm is useful for improving coarse resolution GPP estimates over mountainous areas.
Effects of Vegetation Heterogeneity and Surface Topography on Spatial Scaling of Net Primary Productivity

Abstract:Due to the heterogeneous nature of the land surface, spatial scaling is an inevitable issue in the development of land models coupled with low-resolution Earth system models (ESMs) for predicting land-atmosphere interactions and carbon-climate feedbacks. In this study, a simple spatial scaling algorithm is developed to correct errors in net primary productivity (NPP) estimates made at a coarse spatial resolution based on sub-pixel information of vegetation heterogeneity and surface topography. An eco-hydrological model BEPS-TerrainLab, which considers both vegetation and topographical effects on the vertical and lateral water flows and the carbon cycle, is used to simulate NPP at 30 m and 1 km resolutions for a 5700 km2 watershed with an elevation range from 518 m to 3767 m in the Qinling Mountain, Shanxi Province, China. Assuming that the NPP simulated at 30 m resolution represents the reality and that at 1 km resolution is subject to errors due to sub-pixel heterogeneity, a spatial scaling index (SSI) is developed to correct the coarse resolution NPP values pixel by pixel. The agreement between the NPP values at these two resolutions is improved considerably from R2 = 0.782 to R2 = 0.884 after the correction. The mean bias error (MBE) in NPP modelled at the 1 km resolution is reduced from 14.8 g C m−2 yr−1 to 4.8 g C m−2 yr−1 in comparison with NPP modelled at 30 m resolution, where the mean NPP is 668 g C m−2 yr−1. The range of spatial variations of NPP at 30 m resolution is larger than that at 1 km resolution. Land cover fraction is the most important vegetation factor to be considered in NPP spatial scaling, and slope is the most important topographical factor for NPP spatial scaling especially in mountainous areas, because of its influence on the lateral water redistribution, affecting water table, soil moisture and plant growth. Other factors including leaf area index (LAI) and elevation have small and additive effects on improving the spatial scaling between these two resolutions.

Abstract:Both surface topography and vegetation heterogeneity are important factors introducing biases in regional ecological modeling, especially when the modeling is made at large grids. Several studies have demonstrated that gridding the land surface into coarse homogeneous pixels may cause important biases on ecosystem model estimations of carbon budget components at local, regional and global scales. These biases result from overlooking sub-pixel variability of land surface characteristics. This study suggests a simple algorithm that uses sub-pixel information on the spatial variability of vegetation and surface topography to correct net primary productivity (NPP) estimates, made at coarse spatial resolutions where the land surface is considered as homogeneous within each pixel. A spatial scaling algorithm is developed to correct biases in coarse-resolution NPP estimation. This algorithm considers the effect of sub-pixel heterogeneities of land cover, leaf area index (LAI), slope and elevation. Its application to a carbon-hydrology coupled model estimates made at a 1-km resolution over a watershed (named Baohe River Basin) located in the southwestern part of Qinling Mountains, in China, Shaanxi Province, China, improved estimates of average NPP as well as its temporal and spatial variability.

Abstract:Scale plays a pivotal role in shaping ecological patterns and processes, affecting the features and interrelationships of ecosystem services (ESs). Understanding the scale effects on the spatiotemporal characteristics of ESs and their relationships is crucial for sustainable management of ecosystem and the preservation of human well-being. This is particularly essential for cropland ecosystems, which have multiple functions closely linked to essential human needs. Our study aimed to enhance understanding of the complex interactions among diverse cropland ESs at multiple scales and explore the impact of spatial scale on ESs and their relationships. We conducted our study in the Hangzhou Bay area, which is located in the eastern coastal region of China, using a multi-scale framework that integrated the CASA, RUSLE, and InVEST models. This allowed us to analyze the spatial scale effects and temporal variations in cropland ESs supply, trade-offs/synergies, and bundles. Results showed relatively stable spatial patterns and hot spots of ESs from 2000 to 2019, with a trend towards increased homogeneity and aggregation as scales increased. Trade-offs and synergies between pairwise ESs were stronger and more synergistic at coarser scales. We identified three ecosystem service bundles (ESBs) at all three scales, exhibiting relatively consistent average ES characteristics, but also demonstrating spatial heterogeneity and scale effects on their patterns.

Abstract:An improved Carnegie Ames Stanford Approach (CASA) model based on two kinds of remote sensing (RS) data, Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM +) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS), and climate variables were applied to estimate the Net Primary Productivity (NPP) of Xuzhou in June of each year from 2001 to 2010. The NPP of the study area decreased as the spatial scale increased. The average NPP of terrestrial vegetation in Xuzhou showed a decreasing trend in recent years, likely due to changes in climate and environment. The study area was divided into four sub-regions, designated as highest, moderately high, moderately low, and lowest in NPP. The area designated as the lowest sub-region in NPP increased with expanding scale, indicating that the NPP distribution varied with different spatial scales. The NPP of different vegetation types was also significantly influenced by scale. In particular, the NPP of urban woodland produced lower estimates because of mixed pixels. Similar trends in NPP were observed with different RS data. In addition, expansion of residential areas and reduction of vegetated areas were the major reasons for NPP change. Land cover changes in urban areas reduced NPP, which could chiefly be attributed to human-induced disturbance.

Abstract:There exists a spatial mismatch between socioeconomic data, such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and physical and environmental datasets. This study provides a dasymetric approach for GDP estimation at a fine scale by combining the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program Operational Linescan System (DMSP/OLS) nighttime imagery, enhanced vegetation index (EVI), and land cover data. Despite the advantages of DMSP/OLS nighttime imagery in estimating human activities, its drawbacks, including coarse resolution, overglow, and saturation effects, limit its application. Hence, high-resolution EVI data were integrated with DMSP/OLS in this study to create a Human Settlement Index (HSI) for estimating the GDP of secondary and tertiary industries. The GDP of the primary industry was then estimated on the basis of land cover data, and the area with the GDP of the primary industry was classified by a threshold technique (DN <= 8). The regression model for GDP distribution estimation was implemented in Zhejiang Province in southeast China, and a GDP density map was generated at a resolution of 250 m x 250 m. Compared with the outcome of taking DMSP/OLS as a unique parameter, estimation errors obviously decreased. This study offers a low-cost and accurate approach for rapidly estimating high-resolution GDP distribution to construct an important database for the government when formulating developmental strategies.

Abstract:Accurate estimation of mountain vegetation gross primary productivity (GPP) at fine spatial resolutions offers opportunities to better understand mountain ecosystems' feedback to the global climate system. Eco-hydrological models have great advantages in simulating mountain vegetation photosynthesis, but their large-scale applications remain challenging at fine spatial resolutions due to the computing resources. In this work, a scheme by integrating an eco-hydrological model called Boreal Ecosystem Productivity Simulator-TerrainLab (BTL) with the linear and non-linear downscaling processes, was developed to obtain large-scale mountain vegetation GPP at the 30 m resolution over four watersheds. Firstly, two coarse spatial resolution GPP were simulated by BTL at 480 m and 120 m. Then, the 30 m resolution GPP was estimated by a linear downscaling process modelled at 120 m and a non-linear downscaling process modelled from 480 m to 120 m. The 30 m resolution BTL-simulated GPP was served as reference for evaluation. Results showed that the Root-Mean-Square-Error ( RMSE ) after downscaling was decreased by 110 gCm -2 year −1 compared to the 120 m resolution BTL-simulated GPP (500 gCm −2 year −1 ) at the 30 m resolution, highlighting the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in recovering the topographic variations of mountain vegetation GPP at fine spatial resolutions. Compared to the 120 m resolution BTL-simulated GPP (351 gCm −2 year −1 ), RMSE after downscaling was decreased by 156 gCm −2 year −1 at the 120 m resolution, indicating that the proposed scheme is feasible in correcting GPP errors at coarse spatial resolutions. More specifically, the non-linear downscaling process was observed to effectively improve GPP estimates after linear downscaling, suggesting that the spatial scaling errors in coarse estimates should be considered in the downscaling process. Our study indicates that the scheme that runs eco-hydrological models at coarse resolutions and then downscales them by surface heterogeneity is a practical approach for obtaining large-scale mountain vegetation GPP at fine spatial resolutions.

Abstract:With the increasing frequency of extreme events, daily gross primary productivity (GPP) is necessary to be accurately assessed to determine when and how much it is affected. Fluctuating environmental conditions contribute to diverse diurnal photosynthetic patterns influenced by changing atmospheric factors, including solar radiation, CO 2 concentrations, and leaf temperature. This complexity underscores the challenge of accurately estimating daily GPP. We quantitatively assessed three temporal upscaling approaches – cosine of the solar zenith angle, extraterrestrial solar irradiance, and photosynthetic active radiation(PAR) – under varying sky conditions. Additionally, we introduced a novel correction method for universal temporal upscaling ratios. Instantaneous GPP values from the FLUXNET2015 dataset, acquired around the MODIS overpassing time, were utilized. The upscaled daily GPP exhibited minimal deviation from the half-hourly GPPs collected between 11 am and 1 pm, with increased discrepancies for GPPs later in the afternoon. The PAR-based approach demonstrated superior accuracy in the afternoon, effectively capturing incoming radiation changes due to clouds. Instant environmental variables-GPP relationships were weak under clear skies but exhibited moderate-to-high positive correlations under cloudy conditions. Analyzing the impact of the diffuse ratio of incoming photosynthetic active radiation on instantaneous GPP revealed limited enhancement at short time scales. On a daily scale, all three temporal upscaling approaches, under different ranges of clearness index, consistently underestimated daily GPP. We proposed a novel correction method, normalizing the difference between maximum and minimum air temperature in a day, notably reduced errors by approximately 10.69 and 21.07 gC m −2 d −1 for cosine of the solar zenith angle and extraterrestrial solar irradiance-based temporal upscaling approaches. We recommend adopting the corrected temporal upscaling factor globally due to its simplicity and improved accuracy.

Quantitative Assessment of Spatiotemporal Variations and Drivers of Gross Primary Productivity in Tropical Ecosystems at Higher Resolution

Abstract:Climate change significantly impacts vegetation gross primary productivity (GPP), yet uncertainties persist in the carbon cycle of tropical terrestrial ecosystems due to incomplete consideration of productivity drivers and lag effects. To address this, we developed a remote sensing-based process model by integrating high-resolution vegetation indices and multi-layer soil hydrological module, to simulate monthly GPP at a 30 m resolution across Hainan Island from 2000 to 2020. The finer GPP can capture more spatial details and show higher accuracy at site scales (R = 0.79 and NRMSE = 14.79 %). Trend analysis and Hurst exponent were used to reveal spatiotemporal dynamics and sustainability of GPP. Meanwhile, nonlinear Granger causality tests quantified both concurrent and lagged correlations between various environmental factors and GPP. The results indicated significant GPP increases across 98.5 % of vegetated areas, with an annual rise of 437.02 g C/m2, and a marked improvement in trends around 2011. Future projections suggest sustained high GPP sustainability (Hurst = 0.53), and reducing “positive-inconsistent” areas in the northeast and southwest is crucial for enhancing local carbon sinks. Furthermore, water availability, temperature, and radiation were primary drivers of GPP changes, affecting 53.55 %, 27.77 %, and 14.43 % of vegetated areas, respectively, with their compounded effects enhancing explanatory power by 35.84 %. Relative humidity dominated water availability impacts on GPP (10.02 % to 79.98 % variation), surpassing precipitation and soil moisture impacts. Lag effects were observed in 68.83 % of vegetated areas, with 1 to 4-month delays in responses to net solar radiation and surface temperature, especially in forest and shrubland ecosystems. This study provides deeper insights into fine-scale GPP simulations and analysis of climate interactions, which are crucial for effective carbon cycle management in tropical ecosystems.

Abstract:As an important land-surface parameter, vegetation phenology has been estimated from observations by various satellite-borne sensors with substantially different spatial resolutions, ranging from tens of meters to several kilometers. The inconsistency of satellite-derived phenological metrics (e.g., green-up date, GUD, also known as the land-surface spring phenology) among different spatial resolutions, which is referred to as the “scale effect” on GUD, has been recognized in previous studies, but it still needs further efforts to explore the cause of the scale effect on GUD and to quantify the scale effect mechanistically. To address these issues, we performed mathematical analyses and designed up-scaling experiments. We found that the scale effect on GUD is not only related to the heterogeneity of GUD among fine pixels within a coarse pixel, but it is also greatly affected by the covariation between the GUD and vegetation growth speed of fine pixels. GUD of a coarse pixel tends to be closer to that of fine pixels with earlier green-up and higher vegetation growth speed. Therefore, GUD of the coarse pixel is earlier than the average of GUD of fine pixels, if the growth speed is a constant. However, GUD of the coarse pixel could be later than the average from fine pixels, depending on the proportion of fine pixels with later GUD and higher growth speed. Based on those mechanisms, we proposed a model that accounted for the effects of heterogeneity of GUD and its co-variation with growth speed, which explained about 60% of the scale effect, suggesting that the model can help convert GUD estimated at different spatial scales. Our study provides new mechanistic explanations of the scale effect on GUD.

Abstract:Most current statistical models for downscaling the remotely sensed land surface temperature (LST) are based on the assumption of the scale-invariant LST-descriptors relationship, which is being debated and requires an in-depth examination. Additionally, research on downscaling LST to high or very high resolutions (similar to 10 m) is still rare. Here, a simple analytical model was developed to quantify the scale effect in downscaling the LST from a medium resolution (similar to 100 m) to high resolutions. The model was verified in the Zhangye oasis and Beijing city. Examinations of the simulation datasets that were generated based on airborne and space station LSTs demonstrate that the developed model can predict the scale effect in LST downscaling; the scale effect exists in both of these two study areas. The model was further applied to 12 ASTER images in the Zhangye oasis during a complete crop growing season and one Landsat-8 TIRS image in Beijing city in the summer. The results demonstrate that the scale effect is intrinsically caused by the varying probability distribution of the LST and its descriptors at the native and target resolutions. The scale effect depends on the values of the descriptors, the phenology, and the ratio of the native resolution to the target resolution. Removing the scale effect would not necessarily improve the accuracy of the downscaled LST.
A Framework for Quantifying the Uncertainty in Upscaling Evapotranspiration From Homogeneous to Heterogeneous Underlying Surface

Abstract:The uncertainty of ground truth values at the pixel scale obtained via upscaling directly affects the credibility of remote sensing product validation. This article provides an in-depth analysis of the sources of uncertainty in ground truth evapotranspiration (ET) at the pixel scale. This uncertainty is quantitatively evaluated, and the methods for its control are discussed. The results indicate that the uncertainty from upscaling methods is highest, followed by that from auxiliary data, with that from instrument measurements being the smallest. The relative accuracy of the ground truth ET at the pixel scale for the LAS1–LAS4 (LAS5–LAS7) regions is 89.15%–90.16% (81.56%–82.58%). The accuracy for homogeneous surfaces is relatively high at approximately 90%–93%, whereas for moderately and highly heterogeneous surfaces, it is lower, varying from approximately 81% to 92%. To control uncertainty, precise instrument calibration, strategic positioning, the use of diverse constraints, and robust modeling are recommended to increase measurement accuracy and prediction reliability. This uncertainty study includes the analyses of different sources of uncertainty and quantitatively evaluates the uncertainty of ground truth values over different heterogeneous underlying surfaces. The results can be used to objectively evaluate the accuracy of remote sensing products, thus advancing studies of the uncertainty of ground truth values at the pixel scale and enhancing the scientific, reliable, and systematic validation of remote sensing products. This approach can greatly promote the validation of remote sensing ET products over heterogeneous surfaces.

The NPP of the study area decreases with the spatial scale expanding; The average NPP of terrestrial vegetation in Xuzhou shows decreasing trend in recent years because of the changes in climate and environment; The whole study area was plotted out four sub-regions, which were NPP higher sub-region, NPP high sub-region, NPP low sub-region and NPP lower sub-region. The average NPP of every sub-region was decreasing and the area percentage of lower sub-region was increasing with the scale expanding, so the NPP structure is various in different spatial scales. The NPP of the different vegetation types is significantly influenced by scale effect. In particular, the NPP of urban woodland was estimated lower value because of mixed pixel, it was increasing with the scale expanding.
Grid-size effects on estimation of evapotranspiration and gross primary production over a large Loess Plateau basin, China

Abstract:A distributed eco-hydrological model based on soil-vegetation-atmosphere transfer processes is applied to estimate actual evapotranspiration ( ET) and gross primary production (GPP) over the Wuding River basin, Loess Plateau, China, based on digital elevation model, vegetation and soil information between 2000 and 2003 over three grid sizes: 250 m, 1 km and 8 km. The spatial patterns of annual ET and GPP are related to precipitation variability and land-use/cover conditions. The grid size is shown to affect the spatial patterns of annual ET and GPP, the effect on GPP being more significant than that on ET. Geostatistical and regression analyses demonstrate that precipitation and vegetation influence the scaling effect of ET and GPP in a complex way. When precipitation is high, the scaling effect of ET is more dependent on precipitation. The scaling effect of ET and GPP from 1-km to 8-km grid size is much larger than that from 250-m to 1-km grid size, showing the 1-km grid size to be a feasible choice for simulation of their spatial patterns. Although the annual GPP is more sensitive to the grid size than annual ET, both daily ET and daily GPP averaged over the whole basin seem to be insensitive to the grid size, illustrating that the coarse grid size can be used to simulate spatially-averaged variables without losing much accuracy.

Abstract:Ecosystem primary productivity is a key ecological process influencing many ecosystem services, including carbon storage. Thus, clarifying how primary productivity in terrestrial ecosystems responds to climatic vari-ability can reveal key mechanisms that will drive future changes in the global carbon budget. Satellite products of canopy greenness are widely used as proxies for vegetation productivity to evaluate how ecosystems respond to climate variability. However, to what degree inter-annual variations in productivity are consistent with greenness and how this relationship varies spatially remains unclear. Here we investigated the strength of the coupling between inter-annual variations in leaf area index (LAI, a measure of greenness) and ecosystem gross primary productivity (GPP) derived from eddy covariance towers, i.e., the r(2) of the LAI-GPP relationship. Overall, inter-annual GPP and LAI were highly coupled (i.e., high r(2)) in arid grasslands, but were fully decoupled in mesic evergreen broadleaf forests, indicating that this relationship varies strongly along aridity gradients. A possible mechanism of the spatial variation in the LAI-GPP relationship is that the tradeoff between ecosystem structure (LAI) and physiology (photosynthesis per unit leaf area) becomes stronger in more humid climates. Land models overestimated the r(2) of LAI-GPP correlation for most ecosystem types and failed to capture the spatial pattern along aridity gradients. We conclude that relying on greenness products for evaluating inter-annual changes in vegetation productivity may bias assessments, especially in tropical rainforest ecosystems. Our findings may also reconcile observed disparities between responses in greenness and GPP during drought in Amazon forests.
Improved Global Gross Primary Productivity Estimation by Considering Canopy Nitrogen Concentrations and Multiple Environmental Factors

Abstract:The terrestrial gross primary productivity (GPP) plays a crucial role in regional or global ecological environment monitoring and carbon cycle research. Many previous studies have produced multiple products using different models, but there are still significant differences between these products. This study generated a global GPP dataset (NI-LUE GPP) with 0.05° spatial resolution and at 8 day-intervals from 2001 to 2018 based on an improved light use efficiency (LUE) model that simultaneously considered temperature, water, atmospheric CO2 concentrations, radiation components, and nitrogen (N) index. To simulate the global GPP, we mapped the global optimal ecosystem temperatures (Topteco) using satellite-retrieved solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) and applied it to calculate temperature stress. In addition, green chlorophyll index (CIgreen), which had a strong correlation with the measured canopy N concentrations (r = 0.82), was selected as the vegetation index to characterize the canopy N concentrations to calculate the spatiotemporal dynamic maximum light use efficiency (εmax). Multiple existing global GPP datasets were used for comparison. Verified by FLUXNET GPP, our product performed well on daily and yearly scales. NI-LUE GPP indicated that the mean global annual GPP is 129.69 ± 3.11 Pg C with an increasing trend of 0.53 Pg C/yr from 2001 to 2018. By calculating the SPAtial Efficiency (SPAEF) with other products, we found that NI-LUE GPP has good spatial consistency, which indicated that our product has a reasonable spatial pattern. This product provides a reliable and alternative dataset for large-scale carbon cycle research and monitoring long-term GPP variations.

The impacts of spatial resolutions on global urban-related change analyses and modeling

Abstract:Various global land use/land cover (LULC) products have been developed to drive land-relevant climate and hydrological models for environmental assessments. However, systematic studies remain scarce that assess the uncertainties of using these products. By using a total of 16 commonly used global LULC products, we find a logarithm law of upscaling with the spatial resolution. The law reveals spatial details of urban features will be majorly distorted when using LULC products with coarser resolutions. A tipping point of the law around the 30-m resolution was identified by additional analysis of the 1-m and 10-m local land use dataset. Through the example of assessing crop production loss, we further find that most of these products will yield a significant underestimation of crop production losses, globally and locally. We conclude that the underestimated urban land rooted in most of these products would cause vital impacts on global change analyses and modeling.

Abstract:Leaf area index (LAI) plays a significant role in the structure and the functioning of vegetation. Moderate-resolution remote sensed LAI products can be applied to monitor the crop growth, yield and global change. However, the products must be validated against in-situ observations before being used, which requires the upscaling of in-situ LAI to footprint scale of remote sensing. In this study, a two-step upscaling algorithm is developed to obtain the representative ground-truth LAI of heterogeneous surface based on continuous in-situ LAI measurements. The ASTER images are used to estimate LAI maps. First, the continuous upscaled vegetation LAI values can be obtained with a weighted combination of in-situ LAI values and the weight can be derived by Bayesian linear regression (BLR) algorithm. Secondly, the upscaled heterogeneous surface LAI can be calculated using the upscaled vegetation LAI multiplied by heterogeneous index. Our study area is located in Yingke irrigation districts of Heihe River basin, Gansu province of China and the corn LAI is measured at each point from June 25 to August 24, 2012 by newly designed LAINet. The result showed that RMSE of upscaled LAI declines with the increasing number of sampling points. Compared to the case that averaged LAI value of six points is used to represent this heterogeneous surface LAI (RMSE 0.9711), the RMSE of upscaled heterogeneous surface LAI values using the same six points falls to 0.035. It indicated that our upscaling algorithm is effective to upscale in-situ LAI values to obtain the representative LAI ground-truth of heterogeneous land surface with certain number of sampling points. Furthermore, this upscaling method is used for upscaling in-situ LAI values to obtain the surface LAI in 1-2 km. It suggests that upscaling method can make full use of the continuous in-situ LAI measurements.

Abstract:A quantitative understanding of the global gross primary productivity (GPP) and its responses to increasing CO2 levels is critical for quantifying the feedbacks of ecosystems to climate change. This study applied the daily boreal ecosystem productivity simulator (BEPSd) model to estimate the global GPP from 2000 to 2015, compare the estimated GPP with flux tower measurements and other GPP products to verify the estimation accuracy, and analyze the CO2 fertilization effect and conducted a spatial analysis of the effects of the spatiotemporal distribution of the CO2 concentration on the estimation of the GPP. The results showed that the estimates could capture the magnitude, amplitude, distribution, and variation in the GPP well compared with the flux tower measurements and other GPP products. In general, the terrestrial GPP increased as the atmospheric CO2 concentrations increased; however, the CO2 fertilization effect varied based on time and location and was constrained by climatic conditions. The increases in the lower latitudes were more significant than those in the middle and higher latitudes, and seasonal variation characteristics were observed in the middle and higher latitudes. Not considering the CO2 fertilization effect could underestimate the global GPP and its trend, while not considering the spatiotemporal distribution of the CO2 concentration could overestimate the global annual GPP. These results increase our understanding of the variations in carbon flux under future climate change, especially under the conditions of a changing atmospheric CO2 concentration.

Abstract:Annual gross primary productivity (AGPP) is the basis for grain production and terrestrial carbon sequestration. Mapping regional AGPP from site measurements provides methodological support for analysing AGPP spatiotemporal variations thereby ensures regional food security and mitigates climate change. Based on 641 site-year eddy covariance measuring AGPP from China, we built an AGPP mapping scheme based on its formation and selected the optimal mapping way, which was conducted through analysing the predicting performances of divergent mapping tools, variable combinations, and mapping approaches in predicting observed AGPP variations. The reasonability of the selected optimal scheme was confirmed by assessing the consistency between its generating AGPP and previous products in spatiotemporal variations and total amount. Random forest regression tree explained 85 % of observed AGPP variations, outperforming other machine learning algorithms and classical statistical methods. Variable combinations containing climate, soil, and biological factors showed superior performance to other variable combinations. Mapping AGPP through predicting AGPP per leaf area (PAGPP) explained 86 % of AGPP variations, which was superior to other approaches. The optimal scheme was thus using a random forest regression tree, combining climate, soil, and biological variables, and predicting PAGPP. The optimal scheme generating AGPP of Chinese terrestrial ecosystems decreased from southeast to northwest, which was highly consistent with previous products. The interannual trend and interannual variation of our generating AGPP showed a decreasing trend from east to west and from southeast to northwest, respectively, which was consistent with data-oriented products. The mean total amount of generated AGPP was 7.03 ± 0.45 PgC yr-1 falling into the range of previous works. Considering the consistency between the generated AGPP and previous products, our optimal mapping way was suitable for mapping AGPP from site measurements. Our results provided a methodological support for mapping regional AGPP and other fluxes.
