Abstract:The role of wetland plant (Scirpus mariqueter) on methane (CH4) emissions from a subtropical tidal saltmarsh of Yangtze estuary was investigated over a year. Monthly CH4 flux and pore-water CH4 concentration were characterized using static closed chamber technique and pore-water extraction. Measured chamber CH4 fluxes indicated that saltmarsh of the Yangtze estuary acted as a net source of atmospheric CH4 with annual average flux of 24.0 mgCH4·m−2·day−1. The maximum chamber CH4 flux was in August (91.2 mgCH4·m−2·day−1), whereas the minimum was observed in March (2.30 mgCH4·m−2·day−1). Calculated diffusion CH4 fluxes were generally less than 6% of the chamber fluxes. Significant correlations were observed between the chamber CH4 flux and rhizospheric pore-water CH4 concentration (11–15 cm: p < 0.05, R = 0.732; 16–20 cm: p < 0.05, R = 0.777). In addition, chamber CH4 fluxes from July to September constituted more than 80% of the total annual emission and were closely correlated with aboveground biomass yield of S. mariqueter. The results indicated that S. mariqueter transportation was the dominant CH4 emission pathway and it provided an efficient route for the belowground CH4 to escape into the atmosphere while avoiding oxidation, leading to CH4 emissions.

Abstract:Methane (CH4) is a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) with atmospheric concentrations that have nearly tripled since pre-industrial times. Wetlands account for a large share of global CH4 emissions, yet the magnitude and factors controlling CH4 fluxes in tidal wetlands remain uncertain. We synthesized CH4 flux data from 100 chamber and 9 eddy covariance (EC) sites across tidal marshes in the conterminous United States to assess controlling factors and improve predictions of CH4 emissions. This effort included creating an open-source database of chamber-based GHG fluxes (https://doi.org/10.25573/serc.14227085). Annual fluxes across chamber and EC sites averaged 26 ± 53 g CH4 m-2 year-1, with a median of 3.9 g CH4 m-2 year-1, and only 25% of sites exceeding 18 g CH4 m-2 year-1. The highest fluxes were observed at fresh-oligohaline sites with daily maximum temperature normals (MATmax) above 25.6°C. These were followed by frequently inundated low and mid-fresh-oligohaline marshes with MATmax ≤25.6°C, and mesohaline sites with MATmax >19°C. Quantile regressions of paired chamber CH4 flux and porewater biogeochemistry revealed that the 90th percentile of fluxes fell below 5 ± 3 nmol m-2 s-1 at sulfate concentrations >4.7 ± 0.6 mM, porewater salinity >21 ± 2 psu, or surface water salinity >15 ± 3 psu. Across sites, salinity was the dominant predictor of annual CH4 fluxes, while within sites, temperature, gross primary productivity (GPP), and tidal height controlled variability at diel and seasonal scales. At the diel scale, GPP preceded temperature in importance for predicting CH4 flux changes, while the opposite was observed at the seasonal scale. Water levels influenced the timing and pathway of diel CH4 fluxes, with pulsed releases of stored CH4 at low to rising tide. This study provides data and methods to improve tidal marsh CH4 emission estimates, support blue carbon assessments, and refine national and global GHG inventories.

Abstract:Abstract Methane dynamics within salt marshes are complex because vegetation types, temperature, oscillating water levels, and changes in salinity and redox conditions influence CH 4 production, consumption, oxidation, and emissions. These non‐linear and complex interactions among variables affect the traditionally expected functional relationships and present challenges for interpreting and developing process‐based models. We employed empirical dynamic modeling (EDM) and convergent cross mapping (CCM) as a novel approach for characterizing seasonal/multiday and diurnal CH 4 dynamics by inferring causal variables, lags, and interconnections among multiple biophysical variables within a temperate salt marsh using 5 years of eddy covariance data. EDM/CCM is a nonparametric approach capable of quantifying the coupling between variables while determining time scales where variable interactions are the most relevant. We found that gross primary productivity, tidal creek dissolved oxygen, and temperature were important for seasonal/multiday dynamics (rho = 0.73–0.80), while water level was most important for diurnal dynamics during both the growing and dormancy phenoperiods (rho = 0.72 and 0.56, respectively). Lags for the top‐ranked variables (i.e., gross primary productivity, dissolved oxygen, temperature, water level) occurred between 1 and 5 weeks at the seasonal scale and 1–24 hr at the diurnal scale. The EDM had high prediction capabilities for intra‐/inter‐seasonal patterns and annual CH 4 sums but had limitations in representing large, infrequent fluxes. Results highlight the importance of non‐linearity, drivers, lag times, and interconnections among multiple biophysical variables that regulate CH 4 fluxes in tidal wetlands. This research introduces a novel approach to examining CH 4 fluxes, which will aid in evaluating current paradigms in wetlands and other ecosystems.

Abstract:CH4 emissions could vary with biotic and abiotic factors at different time scales. However, little is known about temporal dynamics of CH4 flux and its controls in coastal marshes. In this study, CH4 flux was continuously measured with the eddy covariance technique for 2 years in a subtropical salt marsh in eastern China. Wavelet analysis was applied to explore the multi-scale variations of CH4 flux and its controls. Additionally, partial wavelet coherence was used to disentangle confounding effects of measured variables. No consistent diurnal pattern was found in CH4 fluxes. However, the hot-moments of CH4 flux were observed after nighttime high tide on days near the spring tide. Periodic dynamics were also observed at multi-day, semilunar and seasonal scales. Tide height in summer had a negative effect on CH4 flux at the semilunar scale. Air temperature explained most variations in CH4 fluxes at the multi-day scale but CH4 flux was mainly controlled by PAR and GEP at the seasonal scale. Air temperature explained 48% and 56% of annual variations in CH4 fluxes in 2011 and 2012, respectively. In total, the salt marsh acted as a CH4 source (17.6 ± 3.0 g C–CH4 m−2 year−1), which was higher than most studies report for inland wetlands. Our results show that CH4 fluxes exhibit multiple periodicities and its controls vary with time scale; moreover, CH4 flux is strongly modified by tide. This study emphasizes the importance of ecosystem-specific measurements of CH4 fluxes, and more work is needed to estimate regional CH4 budgets.

Abstract:Here is a commentary on “Methane Fluxes in Tidal Marshes of the Contiguous United States” recently published in Global Change Biology . Tidal wetlands are distinctive ecosystems with highly diverse species composition and complex, flexible environments. Thus, it is critical to accurately determine CH 4 emissions from tidal wetlands in a changing climate. This study provides a very valuable data set to further explore the patterns, responses, and adaptation of CH 4 fluxes in different tidal wetland ecosystems. We look forward to future research to further explore the unique processes and mechanisms of methane emissions in tidal wetlands in the future.

Abstract:Within the coastal zone, salt marshes are atmospheric CO 2 sinks and represent an essential component of biological carbon ( C ) stored on earth due to a strong primary production. Significant amounts of C are processed within these tidal systems which requires a better understanding of the temporal CO 2 flux dynamics, the metabolic processes involved and the controlling factors. Within a temperate salt marsh (French Atlantic coast), continuous CO 2 fluxes measurements were performed by the atmospheric eddy covariance technique to assess the net ecosystem exchange (NEE) at diurnal, tidal and seasonal scales as well as the associated relevant biophysical drivers. To study marsh metabolic processes, measured NEE was partitioned into gross primary production (GPP) and ecosystem respiration ( R eco ) during marsh emersion allowing to estimate NEE at the marsh–atmosphere interface ( NEE marsh = GPP − R eco ). During the year 2020, the net C balance from measured NEE was − 483 g C m −2 yr −1 while GPP and R eco absorbed and emitted 1019 and 533 g C m −2 yr −1 , respectively. The highest CO 2 uptake was recorded in spring during the growing season for halophyte plants in relationships with favourable environmental conditions for photosynthesis, whereas in summer, higher temperatures and lower humidity rates increased ecosystem respiration. At the diurnal scale, the salt marsh was a CO 2 sink during daytime, mainly driven by light, and a CO 2 source during night-time, mainly driven by temperature, irrespective of emersion or immersion periods. However, daytime immersion strongly affected NEE fluxes by reducing marsh CO 2 uptake up to 90 %. During night-time immersion, marsh CO 2 emissions could be completely suppressed, even causing a change in metabolic status from source to sink under certain situations, especially in winter when R eco rates were lowest. At the annual scale, tidal immersion did not significantly affect the net C uptake of the studied salt marsh since similar annual balances of measured NEE (with tidal immersion) and estimated NEE marsh (without tidal immersion) were recorded.

High spatiotemporal variability of methane concentrations challenges estimates of emissions across vegetated coastal ecosystems

Abstract:Coastal methane (CH4 ) emissions dominate the global ocean CH4 budget and can offset the "blue carbon" storage capacity of vegetated coastal ecosystems. However, current estimates lack systematic, high-resolution, and long-term data from these intrinsically heterogeneous environments, making coastal budgets sensitive to statistical assumptions and uncertainties. Using continuous CH4 concentrations, δ13 C-CH4 values, and CH4 sea-air fluxes across four seasons in three globally pervasive coastal habitats, we show that the CH4 distribution is spatially patchy over meter-scales and highly variable in time. Areas with mixed vegetation, macroalgae, and their surrounding sediments exhibited a spatiotemporal variability of surface water CH4 concentrations ranging two orders of magnitude (i.e., 6-460 nM CH4 ) with habitat-specific seasonal and diurnal patterns. We observed (1) δ13 C-CH4 signatures that revealed habitat-specific CH4 production and consumption pathways, (2) daily peak concentration events that could change >100% within hours across all habitats, and (3) a high thermal sensitivity of the CH4 distribution signified by apparent activation energies of ~1 eV that drove seasonal changes. Bootstrapping simulations show that scaling the CH4 distribution from few samples involves large errors, and that ~50 concentration samples per day are needed to resolve the scale and drivers of the natural variability and improve the certainty of flux calculations by up to 70%. Finally, we identify northern temperate coastal habitats with mixed vegetation and macroalgae as understudied but seasonally relevant atmospheric CH4 sources (i.e., releasing ≥ 100 μmol CH4 m-2 day-1 in summer). Due to the large spatial and temporal heterogeneity of coastal environments, high-resolution measurements will improve the reliability of CH4 estimates and confine the habitat-specific contribution to regional and global CH4 budgets.

Abstract:Abstract Salt marshes play an important role in coastal carbon cycling. Unfortunately, these systems are threatened by sea level rise. One strategy to increase the resilience of marshes is thin‐layer placement of sediment (TLP). While TLP can boost elevation, little is known about how TLP alters greenhouse gas fluxes. We addressed this knowledge gap by measuring greenhouse gas fluxes in TLP plots that received either 7 cm (TLP‐7 cm) or 14 cm of added sediment (TLP‐14 cm), control plots that received no sediment, and reference plots that served as elevation end goal targets for the TLP plots. We found that mean (± standard error) CO 2 uptake was comparable between control and TLP plots (control: −25.84 ± 2.46; TLP‐7 cm: −24.44 ± 3.32; TLP‐14 cm: −23.18 ± 2.08 mmol m −2 hr −1 ) and significantly less in reference plots (−9.54 ± 2.98 mmol m −2 hr −1 ). However, TLP plots (TLP‐7 cm: 35.74 ± 12.70, TLP‐14 cm: 19.79 ± 3.47 μmol m −2 hr −1 ) emitted up to 7 to 22 times more CH 4 compared to control (5.77 ± 0.74 μmol m −2 hr −1 ) and reference (1.63 ± 0.75 μmol m −2 hr −1 ) plots, respectively. N 2 O fluxes from the TLP plots exhibited both uptake (TLP‐7 cm) and emission (TLP‐ 14 cm). Overall, the marsh remained a net greenhouse gas sink, at least during the times we measured—during the day and throughout the growing season. This research demonstrates the dynamics of greenhouse gas fluxes in marshes amended with sediment and highlights the need for future diel and annual measurements.

Abstract:Abstract Seagrass ecosystems are important carbon dioxide sinks that can sequester carbon for centuries as organic matter in sediment. They are also a major source of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, which limits their carbon sink capacity. However, data are lacking on their methane emission dynamics. Here, we conduct a one-year survey of carbon dioxide and methane concentrations and air-sea fluxes in Red Sea seagrass, mudflat, and coral backreef ecosystems. All ecosystems were sources of methane and carbon dioxide. Methane concentrations were lowest in the reef lagoon. We suggest that lagoons may be a globally important source of greenhouse gases. Methane concentrations were lower in seagrass than mudflat ecosystems at temperatures below 29.2 °C. Seagrass had the highest annual methane air-sea fluxes but the lowest global warming potential in carbon dioxide equivalent due to a decrease in its flux. Hence, seagrasses can help climate change mitigation compared to bare sediments.
Methane Emissions Are Highly Variable across Wetland Habitats in Natural and Restored Tidal Freshwater Wetlands

Abstract:It is increasingly clear that hydrology, vegetation, and soil characteristics are important in controlling methane (CH 4 ) emissions from wetlands. However, few studies have examined CH 4 emissions between wetland habitats dominated by different plants, or between naturally occurring and restorred wetlands, which are hoped to offer a means of sequestering carbon (C) and offsetting greenhouse gas emission. Our goal was to assess the variation of CH 4 fluxes between different habitats in natural and restored tidal freshwater wetlands. One natural site with three habitats (low marsh, high marsh, and swamp habitat) and restored site with two habitats (low and high marsh) were selected. Both sites are tidal freshwater wetlands (measured salinity <0.3 Practical Salinity Units (PSU)) located on the Patuxent River, Maryland, USA. Gas flux was quantified using static chambers once a month during day and night from May to August 2016 during a single growing season. At 12.5 and 40 cm soil depth, soil redox potential, temperature, porewater CH 4 , and total iron (Fe) concentrations were measured on the same days as flux. Restored habitats had significantly higher soil redox potential (i.e., less reducing conditions) than their natural counterparts ( P < 0.05). Methane flux had high spatiotemporal variations across natural and restored wetland habitats (ranged from −87,901 mg CH 4 m −2 day −1 in restored high marsh during June to 6860 mg CH 4 m −2 day −1 in natural swamp habitat during May). Moreover, natural wetland habitats, on average, were significantly warmer ( P < 0.05) than their restored counterparts at both soil depths (12.5 and 40 cm), where porewater CH 4 concentrations had positive and significant correlation with wetland soil temperatures (r = 0.36 and P < 0.001 – the warmer the soil, the higher the porewater CH 4 available). For a more precise global C budget, soil temperature, spatiotemporal CH 4 variations between wetland types, and tidal effects should be considered in accounting for CH 4 fluxes in wetlands in general and tidal freshwater wetlands specifically.

Abstract:Methane (CH4) is steadily increasing in the atmosphere from different sources including wetlands. However, there is limited landscape level CH4 flux data in deltaic coastal systems where the availability of freshwater is impacted by the combined effect of climate change and anthropogenic impacts. Here we determine potential CH4 fluxes in oligohaline wetlands and benthic sediments in the Mississippi River Delta Plain (MRDP), which is undergoing the highest rate of wetland loss and most extensive hydrological wetland restoration in North America. We evaluate potential CH4 fluxes in two contrasting deltaic systems, one undergoing sediment accretion as result of a freshwater and sediment diversions (Wax Lake Delta, WLD), and one experiencing net land loss (Barataria-Lake Cataouatche, BLC). Short- (<4 days) and long-term (36 days) incubations using soil and sediment intact cores and slurries were performed at different temperatures representing seasonal differences (10, 20, 30 °C). Our study revealed that all habitats were net sources of atmospheric CH4 in all seasons, and CH4 fluxes were generally the highest for the 20 °C incubation. The CH4 flux was higher in the marsh habitat of the recently formed delta system (WLD) with total carbon content of 5-24 mg C cm-3 compared to the marsh habitat in BLC, which had high soil carbon content of 67-213 mg C cm-3. This suggests that the quantity of soil organic matter might not be a determining factor in CH4 flux. Overall, benthic habitats were found to have the lowest CH4 fluxes indicating that projected future conversions of marshes to open water in this region will impact the total wetland CH4 emission, although the overall contribution of such conversions to the regional and global carbon budgets is still unknown. Further research is needed to expand the CH4 flux studies by simultaneously using several methods across different wetland habitats.
A New Coupled Biogeochemical Modeling Approach Provides Accurate Predictions of Methane and Carbon Dioxide Fluxes Across Diverse Tidal Wetlands

Abstract:Abstract Tidal wetlands provide valuable ecosystem services, including storing large amounts of carbon. However, the net exchanges of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and methane (CH 4 ) in tidal wetlands are highly uncertain. While several biogeochemical models can operate in tidal wetlands, they have yet to be parameterized and validated against high‐frequency, ecosystem‐scale CO 2 and CH 4 flux measurements across diverse sites. We paired the Cohort Marsh Equilibrium Model (CMEM) with a version of the PEPRMT model called PEPRMT‐Tidal, which considers the effects of water table height, sulfate, and nitrate availability on CO 2 and CH 4 emissions. Using a model‐data fusion approach, we parameterized the model with three sites and validated it with two independent sites, with representation from the three marine coasts of North America. Gross primary productivity (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (R eco ) modules explained, on average, 73% of the variation in CO 2 exchange with low model error (normalized root mean square error (nRMSE) <1). The CH 4 module also explained the majority of variance in CH 4 emissions in validation sites ( R 2 = 0.54; nRMSE = 1.15). The PEPRMT‐Tidal‐CMEM model coupling is a key advance toward constraining estimates of greenhouse gas emissions across diverse North American tidal wetlands. Further analyses of model error and case studies during changing salinity conditions guide future modeling efforts regarding four main processes: (a) the influence of salinity and nitrate on GPP, (b) the influence of laterally transported dissolved inorganic C on R eco , (c) heterogeneous sulfate availability and methylotrophic methanogenesis impacts on surface CH 4 emissions, and (d) CH 4 responses to non‐periodic changes in salinity.

Abstract:Saline wetlands play a crucial role in climate regulation through their robust cooling effect, attributed to rapid carbon sequestration and minimal methane production. However, a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms controlling their greenhouse gas (GHG) balance is lacking, particularly in salt marshes that are fully or partially submerged due to rising sea levels. We conducted a controlled manipulative experiment to test the effect of water levels on GHG emissions, including four water table levels: ‐10, 0, +5 cm and a fluctuating water table. We used soil cores from a Spartina anglica‐dominated salt marsh and examined the CO2 and CH4 fluxes over a growing season. Daylight CO2 uptake and dark CO2 emission were highest at the ‐10cm water table, while CH4 emissions were lowest at this water table. CO2 and CH4 fluxes were primarily driven by air and water temperature and solar irradiance. Our results indicate that salt marshes with near‐surface water levels (‐10 to 5 cm) function as potent CO2 sinks and minor sources of CH4 during the growing season. The high photosynthetic carbon assimilation combined with low CH4 fluxes resulted in a Global Warming Potential value of ‐326 g CO2eq m−2 on a 100‐year scale. Our study accounted for CH4 fluxes, CO2 uptake and emission together, and identified the mechanisms controlling CO2 and CH4 exchange. This approach is crucial for evaluating the potential of saline tidal wetlands as net carbon sinks and for developing scientifically sound climate mitigation policies.

Abstract:The fluxes of methane (CH4) and dimethylsulfide (DMS) were seasonally measured using static flux chambers over an annual cycle along an elevational gradient of a eastern Chinese coastal salt marsh. To estimate the contribution of higher plants to the fluxes, plant aboveground biomass was experimentally removed and the flux differences between the treatment and the intact were examined. The salt marsh generally functioned as a source for CH4 and DMS, with the maximum occurring at the cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) marsh. The mean annual emission rates of CH4 and DMS were 0.70+/-10.24mM m(-2)d(-1) and 4.59+/-0.97 mu M m(-2) d(-1) at the cordgrass marsh (positive for emission and negative for consumption), respectively. CH4 emission rates were positively correlated to those of DMS, indicating a possible coupling between sulphur and carbon cycles in the study marsh. Comparative analyses showed that higher plants were present as an important source of CH4, DMS, and accounting for 57.19% and 23.07% of their total emission rates at the cordgrass marsh, respectively. However, the mechanism underlying plant emissions is not clear.

Abstract:Mangroves are critical blue carbon ecosystems. Measurements of methane (CH 4 ) emissions from mangrove tree stems have the potential to reduce uncertainty in the capacity of carbon sequestration. This study is the first to simultaneously measure CH 4 fluxes from both stems and soils throughout tidal cycles. We quantified carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and CH 4 fluxes from mangrove tree stems of Avicennia marina and Kandelia obovata , which have distinct root structures, during tidal cycles. Tree stems of both species served as net CO 2 and CH 4 sources. Compared to fluxes in the soils, the mangrove tree stems exhibited remarkably lower CH 4 fluxes but no difference in CO 2 fluxes. The stems of A. marina exhibited an increasing trend in CO 2 flux from low to high tides. However, CH 4 fluxes showed high temporal variability, with the stems of A. marina functioning as a CH 4 sink before tidal inundation and becoming a source after ebbing. In contrast, the stems of K. obovata showed no consistent pattern in the CO 2 or CH 4 fluxes. Based on our findings, the stem CH 4 fluxes in A. marina may vary by up to 1200 % when considering tidal influence, compared to when tidal influence is ignored. Therefore, sampling only during low tides might underestimate stem CO 2 and CH 4 fluxes on a diurnal scale. This study highlights the necessity of considering tidal influence and species when quantifying greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes from mangrove tree stems. Further study is needed to explore the underlying mechanisms driving the observed flux variations and improve the understanding of GHG dynamics in mangrove ecosystems.

Abstract:Coastal wetlands have sediments that contain organic matter preserved against decomposition for timespans that can range up to millennia. This “blue carbon” in wetland sediments has been proposed as a sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide and a potential source of greenhouse gases if coastal habitats are lost. A missing gap in the role of coastal habitats in the global carbon cycle is elucidating the fate of wetland sediment carbon following disturbance events, such as erosion, that can liberate organic matter to an oxygenated environment where decomposition can more readily occur. Here, we track the fate of previously stored salt marsh sediment by measuring the production of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and methane (CH 4 ) during an oxygenated incubation. Sediments from two depth horizons (5–10 cm and 20–25 cm) were incubated at two temperatures (20 and 30°C) for 161 days. Q 10 of the decomposition process over the entire course of the experiment was 2.0 ± 0.1 and 2.2 ± 0.2 for shallow and deep horizons, respectively. Activation energy for the decomposition reaction (49.7 kJ ⋅ mol –1 and 58.8 kJ ⋅ mol –1 for shallow and deep sediment horizons, respectively) was used to calculate temperature-specific decomposition rates that could be applied to environmental data. Using high-frequency water temperature data, this strategy was applied to coastal states in the conterminous United States (CONUS) where we estimated annual in situ decomposition of eroded salt marsh organic matter as 7–24% loss per year. We estimate 62.90 ± 2.81 Gg C ⋅ yr –1 is emitted from eroded salt marsh sediment decomposition in the CONUS.

Abstract:Currently, there is a lack of knowledge about GHG emissions, specifically N2O and CH4, in subtropical coastal freshwater wetland and mangroves in the southern hemisphere. In this study, we quantified the gas fluxes and substrate availability in a subtropical coastal wetland off the coast of southeast Queensland, Australia over a complete wet-dry seasonal cycle. Sites were selected along a salinity gradient ranging from marine (34 psu) in a mangrove forest to freshwater (0.05 psu) wetland, encompassing the range of tidal influence. Fluxes were quantified for CH4 (range −0.4–483 mg C–CH4 h−1 m−2) and N2O (−5.5–126.4 μg N–N2O h−1 m−2), with the system acting as an overall source for CH4 and N2O (mean N2O and CH4 fluxes: 52.8 μg N–N2O h−1 m−2 and 48.7 mg C–CH4 h−1 m−2, respectively). Significantly higher N2O fluxes were measured during the summer months (summer mean 64.2 ± 22.2 μg N–N2O h−1 m−2; winter mean 33.1 ± 24.4 µg N–N2O h–1 m−2) but not CH4 fluxes (summer mean 30.2 ± 81.1 mg C–CH4 h−1 m−2; winter mean 37.4 ± 79.6 mg C–CH4 h−1 m−2). The changes with season are primarily driven by temperature and precipitation controls on the dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentration. A significant spatial pattern was observed based on location within the study site, with highest fluxes observed in the freshwater tidal wetland and decreasing through the mangrove forest. The dissolved organic carbon (DOC) varied throughout the landscape and was correlated with higher CH4 fluxes, but this was a nonlinear trend. DIN availability was dominated by N–NH4 and correlated to changes in N2O fluxes throughout the landscape. Overall, we did not observe linear relationships between CH4 and N2O fluxes and salinity, oxygen or substrate availability along the fresh-marine continuum, suggesting that this ecosystem is a mosaic of processes and responses to environmental changes.

Abstract:The lateral transport of carbon has been increasingly recognized as an important component of carbon budget in wetlands. We studied a typical coastal salt marsh located at the estuary of the Yangtze River by measuring lateral transfer of macro-detritus carbon within a creek during each month’s largest spring tide period, and simultaneously, we measured the gross primary production (GPP) by the eddy covariance (EC) method. The results showed a bimodal seasonal pattern of net detritus carbon export, with one peak associated with mainly green/fresh carbon materials and the other peak associated with mainly yellow-dark/senescent carbon materials. We also found that the export of green detritus carbon was highly correlated with plant phenology and the height of tides, suggesting influences from both the standing stock of living biomass and the force of tides. GPP measured by the EC technique (GPPEC) and by remote sensing (GPPRS) differed substantially. We found this difference was correlated well with the net export of green macro-detritus. In general, we concluded that the lateral flux is an important component of the carbon budget in the marsh and that to cross validate between GPPEC and GPPRS, it must be included as a calibration term for computing GPPEC.

Abstract:Abstract As interfaces connecting terrestrial and ocean ecosystems, coastal wetlands develop temporally and spatially complex redox conditions, which drive uncertainties in greenhouse gas emission as well as the total carbon budget of the coastal ecosystem. To evaluate the role of complex redox reactions in methane emission from coastal wetlands, a coupled reactive‐transport model was configured to represent subsurface biogeochemical cycles of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur, along with production and transport of multiple gas species through diffusion and ebullition. This model study was conducted at multiple sites along a salinity gradient in the Barataria Basin at the Mississippi River Deltaic Plain. Over a freshwater to saline gradient, simulated total flux of methane was primarily controlled by its subsurface production and consumption, which were determined by redox reactions directly (e.g., methanogenesis, methanotrophy) and indirectly (e.g., competition with sulfate reduction) under aerobic and/or anaerobic conditions. At fine spatiotemporal scales, surface methane fluxes were also strongly dependent on transport processes, with episodic ebullitive fluxes leading to higher spatial and temporal variability compared to the gradient‐driven diffusion flux. Ebullitive methane fluxes were determined by methane fraction in total ebullitive gas and the frequency of ebullitive events, both of which varied with subsurface methane concentrations and other gas species. Although ebullition thresholds are constrained by local physical factors, this study indicates that redox interactions not only determine gas composition in ebullitive fluxes but can also regulate ebullition frequency through gas production.
