Abstract:Surface waters in Taihu Basin, China are increasingly threatened by phosphorus (P) related eutrophication. This study investigated the temporal-spatial status of P in sediment-water in riparian wetlands located in the southern region of Taihu Basin. Two sets of laboratory simulation study, 1) static columns and 2) steady-flow flumes representing wetland in both dry and rainy seasons, were carried out to understand the characteristics and mechanisms of P interaction between sediment and overlying water. In wetland sediments, significant increases in total P (TP) and NaHCO3 (pH=8.5) extractable P (Olsen-P) occurred with the increase of NaOH+EDTA extractable P (NaOH+EDTA-P). After comparing the P adsorption capacity (Q(max)) with TP in the sediment, there could be a risk of P export from the sediment. In the static column experiment, dynamic characteristics of dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP) in the overlying water can be divided into buffer reaction, rapid adsorption, and slow adsorption. A quasi U-pattern curve was observed in the steady-flow flume experiment, i.e., DRP in the overlying water decreased initially and then increased. Because upstream water with high P concentration flowed over the test wetland during rainy seasons, the ecological role of P interception by the sediment could be weakened.

Abstract:Nutrient pollution from agriculture and urban areas plus acid mine drainage (AMD) from legacy coal mines are primary causes of water-quality impairment in the Susquehanna River, which is the predominant source of freshwater and nutrients entering the Chesapeake Bay. Recent increases in the delivery of dissolved orthophosphate (PO 4 ) from the river to the bay may be linked to long-term increases in pH, decreased acidity of precipitation, and decreased acidity, iron, and aluminum loading from widespread AMD. Since the 1950s, baseline pH increased from ~6.5 to ~8 in the West Branch and "North Branch" of the Susquehanna River, which drain bituminous and anthracite coalfields of Pennsylvania. A current baseline pH of ~8 and daily maxima exceeding 9 have been documented along the lower Susquehanna River. In response to improved river quality, bioavailable PO 4 now may be released into solution from legacy sediment that has filled major impoundments in lower reaches of the river. At typical pH (5–8) of natural water, aqueous PO 4 species tend to be adsorbed by hydrous iron, aluminum, and manganese oxides that coat soil and sediment particles; however, PO 4 may be substantially desorbed at pH >8. We created a geochemical model that simulates equilibrium aqueous/solid distributions of PO 4 as pH and other solution characteristics change. Considering current conditions in the lower Susquehanna River, the model demonstrates potential for extensive release of adsorbed PO 4 at pH >8. Empirical data from laboratory experiments corroborate model results. The transfer of PO 4 into the water column may increase algae growth, which removes CO 2 and drives pH to higher values, facilitating additional PO 4 release and exacerbating the potential for harmful algal blooms. Thus, legacy sediment is a currently unquantified source of PO 4 that warrants consideration by resource managers and programs collaborating to reduce phosphorus loads to the bay and similar settings worldwide.

Abstract:This review aims to synthesize the current knowledge of sediment dynamics using insights from long‐term research conducted in the watershed draining to the Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the U.S., to inform management actions to restore the estuary and its watershed. The sediment dynamics of the Chesapeake are typical of many impaired watersheds and estuaries around the world, and this synthesis is intended to be relevant and transferable to other sediment‐impaired systems. The watershed's sediment sources, transport, delivery, and impacts are discussed with implications for effectively implementing best management practices (BMPs) to mitigate sediment issues. This synthesis revealed three key issues to consider when planning actions to reduce sediment loading: Scale, time, and land use. Geology and historical land use generated a template that current land use and climate, in addition to management, are acting upon to control sediment delivery. Important sediment sources in the Chesapeake include the Piedmont physiographic region, urban, and agricultural land use, and streambank erosion of headwater streams, whereas floodplain trapping is important along larger streams and rivers. Implementation of BMPs is widespread and is predicted to lead to decreased sediment loading; however, reworking of legacy sediment stored in stream valleys, with potentially long residence times in storage, can delay and complicate detection of the effects of BMPs on sediment loads. Variability of Sedimentary Phosphorus Fractions in the Western and Sandusky Basins of Lake Erie

Abstract:Surface sediments and three sediment cores from the western basin and one sediment core from the Sandusky basin were analyzed to document spatial and temporal changes in five phosphorus fractions and total phosphorus (TP). The areal distributions of the bioavailable fractions NaCl-Pi, NaBD-Pi, and NaOH-Pi and the refractory organic fraction Res-P were broadly consistent and contrasted with those of the detrital fraction HCl-Pi which showed that high concentrations occurred mostly in high-energy littoral zones and low concentrations largely in profundal depositional areas. The contrasting distributions were induced by interactions among tributary inputs, wave action, circulation, and biogeochemical cycling and transfer in the basin. As revealed by the Sandusky basin sediment record, the detrital fraction HCl-Pi was dominant (70% of TP) during European settlement and decreased rapidly by 28.0% in the early 1910s due largely to impoundments of the Maumee and Sandusky Rivers. While HCl-Pi has ever since remained relatively constant, NaCl-Pi, NaBD-Pi, and NaOH-Pi increased significantly between 1950 and 1970 in the two basins. However, the post-regulation sediment records differed considerably among these coring sites. There was a marked increase of TP in two cores, corresponding to recent return of eutrophication and massive harmful algal blooms but contrasting with a relatively constant, low loading into the lake. This signified the role of internal loading as derived partialy from legacy pollution. Furthermore, NaCl-Pi has increased progressively throughout all the records. We conclude that the increased levels of NaCl-Pi in surface sediments may have altered the internal loading and contributed to the resurgences of harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie.
Sediment–vegetation interactions determine the fate of fluvial sediment in the upper reaches of a large estuary

Abstract:Feedbacks between sediment and plants in the submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV) beds of the Susquehanna Flats help modulate sediment delivery into the upper Chesapeake Bay from its major tributary (Susquehanna River). Recent modeling work has shown that SAV can steer the river plume, directly controlling sediment transport and fate. However, transport mechanisms likely differ between flood and non‐flood conditions and depend on event timing. An opportunity to evaluate these insights in the field occurred with several flood events in summer 2018. Sediment and biomass samples were collected after the flood in the large, continuous main SAV bed of the Flats and in smaller patches to the west of the main bed to evaluate the effect of SAV bed size (width). Sediment characteristics (grain size, organic content) and deposition rates were compared to previous observations during non‐flood conditions in the main bed in 2014–2015 and in the smaller patches in 2019. Overall, sediment deposition rates could be predicted by an empirical model including sediment load, vegetation biomass, and SAV bed width, reflecting the role of vegetation in steering the Susquehanna River plume and modulating sediment input to the upper Chesapeake Bay. Understanding spatiotemporal patterns of sedimentation is essential for realistic estimates of sediment and nutrient (especially nitrogen and carbon) storage in freshwater SAV systems, which have not received as much attention as their saltwater counterparts.

Abstract:Abstract The hazards posed by infrequent major floods to communities along the Susquehanna River and the ecological health of Chesapeake Bay remain largely unconstrained due to the short length of streamgage records. Here we develop a history of high‐flow events on the Susquehanna River during the late Holocene from flood deposits contained in MD99‐2209, a sediment core recovered in 26 m of water from Chesapeake Bay near Annapolis, Maryland, USA. We identify coarse‐grained deposits left by Hurricane Agnes (1972) and the Great Flood of 1936, as well as during three intervals that predate instrumental flood records (~1800‐1500, 1300‐1100 and 400‐0 CE). Comparison to sedimentary proxy data (pollen and ostracode Mg/Ca ratios) from the same core site indicate that prehistoric flooding on the Susquehanna often accompanied cooler‐than‐usual winter/spring temperatures near Chesapeake Bay—typical of negative phases of the North Atlantic Oscillation and conditions thought to foster hurricane landfalls along the East Coast.

Abstract:Nutrient contamination has been one of the lingering issues in the Chesapeake Bay because the bay restoration is complicated by temporally and seasonally variable nutrient sources and complex interaction between imported and regenerated nutrients. Differential reactivity of sedimentary phosphorus (P) pools in response to imposed biogeochemical conditions can record past sediment history and therefore a detailed sediment P speciation may provide information on P cycling particularly the stability of a P pool and the formation of one pool at the expense of another. This study examined sediment P speciation from three sites in the Chesapeake Bay: (i) a North site in the upstream bay, (ii) a middle site in the central bay dominated by seasonally hypoxic bottom water, and (iii) a South site at the bay-ocean boundary using a combination of sequential P extraction (SEDEX) and spectroscopic techniques, including (31)P NMR, P X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy (XANES), and Fe extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). Results from sequential P extraction reveal that sediment P is composed predominantly of ferric Fe-bound P and authigenic P, which was further confirmed by solid-state (31)P NMR, XANES, and EXAFS analyses. Additionally, solution (31)P NMR results show that the sediments from the middle site contain high amounts of organic P such as monoesters and diesters, compared to the other two sites, but that these compounds rapidly decrease with sediment depth indicating remineralized P could have precipitated as authigenic P. Fe EXAFS enabled to identify the changes in Fe mineral composition and P sinks in response to imposed redox condition in the middle site sediments. The presence of lepidocrocite, vermiculite, and Fe smectite in the middle site sediments indicates that some ferric Fe minerals can still be present along with pyrite and vivianite, and that ferric Fe-bound P pool can be a major P sink in anoxic sediments. These results provide improved insights into sediment P dynamics, particularly the rapid remineralization of organic P and the stability of Fe minerals and the ferric Fe-bound P pool in anoxic sediments in the Chesapeake Bay.

Abstract:Seasonal field surveys (April 2018 to February 2019) were conducted in a subterranean estuary (STE) seepage face in Sanggou Bay (China) aiming to explore the transport and reactivity of phosphorus (P) and biogeochemical linkages with the cycling of nitrogen (N) prior to discharge. Porewater dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) and dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) together with different fractions of sedimentary P were analyzed in the upper, middle and lower intertidal covering the top 20 cm of sediment (1–4 cm, 5–8 cm, 9–12 cm, 13–16 cm and 17–20 cm depth). The accumulation of sedimentary organic P stimulated the growth of phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms and led to porewater DOP enrichment during spring. During summer, total P (TP), porewater DIP and DOP concentrations decreased, potentially due to enhanced mineralization driven by high ambient temperature. From autumn to winter, pelagic organic matter into the STE lowered, triggering a drop of TP standing stocks. Compared with the significant seasonality, sedimentary P storage was statistically identical along the intertidal. Such spatial homogeneity likely results from the rebalance driven by P adsorption dynamics and pelagic organic matter delivered by tide and wave setup. The vertical distribution of DIP, DOP, and sedimentary TP were linked to nitrate transformations. In the sediment layer with active mineralization and nitrification, concentrations of DOP, sedimentary redox and clay P increased. In the layer with active nitrate removal (2–5 cm depth), both DIP and DOP concentrations decreased. The sedimentary loosely-bound and organic P were also lower there. Notably, a substantial quantity of soluble P seeped out, acting as an important contributor to the dissolved P pool of the receiving waters. The spatial and temporal overlap of high concentrations of N and P in STEs adds variabilities and uncertainties in P out-drainage fluxes and nutrient stoichiometry balances, which should draw attention from coastal researchers and stakeholders.

Abstract:Understanding mechanisms of suspended sediment transport in estuaries is critical for predicting estuarine geomorphic evolution, managing navigation and fisheries, and monitoring the health of estuarine ecosystems. Yet monitoring suspended sediment transport in estuaries is challenging due to the influences of both riverine and marine processes, and traditional in situ observations cannot directly differentiate contributions of multiple physical processes (e.g., advection and resuspension/settling). Here we investigated the effects of advection and sediment resuspension/settling on suspended sediment transport within the turbidity maximum zone at the South Passage of the Changjiang Estuary. The Changjiang catchment is notable for its long history of intensive human activities including dam construction, which has caused significant geomorphic changes along the river and its estuary. We conducted synchronized hydrodynamic measurements at three monitoring stations along the river channel and imported time series of current velocity and suspended sediment concentration (SSC) at these stations into a simplified, one-dimensional box model to separate in situ SSC into advection- and resuspension/ settling-induced components. Our results show that high SSC consisted of a background SSC of 0.93 kg m(-3) maintained by advection that contributes to 97.9% of the total average SSC, and a fluctuating SSC controlled by sediment resuspension and settling. The background SSC was higher than the fluctuating SSC at all times, indicating that sediment advection was stronger than local sediment resuspension in the river channel. We compared time series of SSC components, bed-level change and suspended sediment transport rates in the South Passage with previous observations in the nearby subaqueous delta, and found that the South Passage of the Changjiang Estuary experienced net accretion during summer because of the relatively high background SSC maintained by advection of fluvial sediment. In contrast, the subaqueous delta experienced erosion due to strong local sediment resuspension and weak sediment delivery by advection. Our results highlight the spatial variability in the magnitudes of sediment advection and resuspension/settling as key drivers of geomorphic changes of deltas and estuarine channels in response to sediment reduction caused by upstream dam construction.
Tracing the sources of phosphorus along the salinity gradient in a coastal estuary using multi-isotope proxies

Abstract:Eutrophication in coastal water has compromised ecosystem services. Identification of phosphorus (P) sources and their load contributions are required for the development of effective nutrient management plans. In this research, multi-isotope proxies were applied to track P sources and evaluate their relative contributions in Love Creek, a coastal estuary in Delaware. The isotope values of carbon (ca. −22‰), nitrogen (ca.+6‰), and phosphate oxygen (ca.+18‰) of agricultural soils under different agricultural practices are generally similar even though their concentrations are distinctly different from forest soils (δ13C: ca. −27‰; δ13N: ca.+2‰; δ18OP: ca.+22‰). Comparison of these parameters among potential land sources (agricultural soils, forest soils, septic wastes, and plant debris) and sink (colloids in water) revealed that the plant debris and soils from forest sources are likely dominant sources of P in freshwater sites. The contribution of terrestrial P sources gradually decreased along the salinity gradient and agricultural soil sources gradually dominanted in the saline water portion of the creek. The variations of P loads due to weather-related discharge, changing land use and activities, and seasons were high and reflected the limitation of accurate estimation of sources. Overall, these results provide improved insights into potential sources and biogeochemical processes in the estuary, which are expected to be useful for water quality monitoring programs.

Influences of a River Dam on Delivery and Fate of Sediments and Particulate Nutrients to the Adjacent Estuary: Case Study of Conowingo Dam and Chesapeake Bay

Abstract:Dams impact the magnitude and nature of material transport through rivers to coastal waters, initially trapping much material in upstream reservoirs. As reservoirs fill, trapping decreases and bottom sediments can be scoured by high flows, increasing downstream delivery. This is the case for the Conowingo Dam, which historically has trapped much of the sediment and particulate nutrients carried by the Susquehanna River otherwise bound for Chesapeake Bay but has now reached dynamic equilibrium. While previous studies primarily focus on either delivery of river inputs or their fate in the Bay, this study synthesizes insights from field observations and modeling along the Reservoir-Bay continuum to evaluate potential impacts of infilling on Bay biogeochemistry. Results show most Susquehanna sediment and particulate nutrient loading occurs during high-flow events that occur only ~ 10% of the time. While loading during these events has increased since the late 1970s, consistent with a decreasing scour threshold for Reservoir sediments, loading during low-flow periods has declined. Loads entering the estuary are largely retained within the upper Bay but can be transported farther downstream during events. Reservoir sediments are highly refractory, and inputs of reservoir-like organic matter do not enhance modeled sediment-nutrient release in upper Bay sediments. These findings and an emerging literature highlight the Bay's resilience to large sediment loads during events (e.g., Tropical Storm Lee in 2011), likely aided by ongoing restoration efforts and/or consistently low-moderate recent inflows (2012–2017). Thus, while events can have major short-term impacts, the long-term impact to Bay biogeochemistry is less severe.

Higher Fine Particle Fraction in Sediment Increased Phosphorus Flux to Estuary in Restored Yellow River Basin

Abstract:River delta-front estuaries (DEs) are vital interfaces for fluxes between terrestrial and marine environments. However, deep uncertainty exists in estimating the sedimentary pollutant flux from terrestrial environments in DEs due, in part, to a lack of direct measurements in these dynamic and complicated regions and uncertainty in the calculation method. Due to its high sediment content, the Yellow River (YR) has a strong ability to adsorb phosphorus; therefore, it reliably reflects estuarine sedimentary processes. Here, through the comprehensive analysis of field samples, monitoring data and remote sensing images, we conclude that riverine fine particles control the deltaic estuary pollution status and that particle size is the key factor. Based on the stable relationships between phosphorus and heavy metals, with r2 values of 0.990, 0.992, and 0.639 for As, Cd, and Cr, respectively, we estimated that the P flux reached 22.68 g/m2 yr in 2017. Abstract:The phosphorus (P) mobility caused by sediment resuspension was investigated in a tilting ﬂume, considering the important effect of upward seepage. The water level and velocity were observed during the experimental run, and water samples were collected for the measurement of sediment and P concentrations. A lower value of P and sediment concentrations occurred at the upstream end of the test section, and then a stable trend was gradually observed towards the downstream end due to the sediment resuspension and deposition within the test section. A lower P release was identified for the seepage run, accompanied with a lower sediment concentration in the overlying water. These phenomena were directly linked with the turbulent flow characteristics such as time-averaged velocity, Reynolds shear stresses, and turbulence intensity. Results show that the level of turbulence decreased with the upward seepage, indicating lower P and sediment concentrations. The turbulent length scale also decreased with the upward seepage, which led to a decrease in the energy and momentum transfer induced by the larger eddy size in the near-bed region, and eventually, a lower rate of sediment resuspension and P release with upward seepage. The results of the present study are useful for civil or hydraulic engineers since the knowledge of P transport with sediment will improve the management of contaminated sediment in seepage affected alluvial channel.

Abstract:The radial sand ridges found off the coast of Jiangsu (China) are major morphological features in the southern Yellow Sea and undergo rapid changes in morphology. Despite extensive observational and modeling efforts, the physical processes controlling sediment transport and associated morphological evolution over the ridges remain not well understood. Here we analyzed data collected from systematic hydrodynamic and sedimentary surveys including records from moorings and bottom-mounted tripods deployed at channels and adjacent ridges. We explored the role of advection and local resuspension processes in controlling morphological changes and how they are modulated by tidal asymmetry. Bottom shear stresses due to mean tidal currents, waves, and wave-current interactions were estimated to examine the effects of tidal asymmetry, advection and resuspension processes on suspended sediment concentration (SSC) variability. The simplified depth-averaged model of Bass et al. (2002) was used to explain the phase relationships between fine sediment suspensions and tidal currents. We found that resuspension is the major controlling factor of bottom SSC during mean and spring tides, while advection is the dominant process during neap tides. The asymmetries in water level and tidal current lead to a net lateral sediment transport directed from the channel to the sand ridges, which cause erosion in channels and deposition on the sand ridges. This sediment transport pattern likely contributes to the evolution of the sand ridges under fair weather conditions (i.e., excluding storm events).

Abstract:There is a need to understand what makes certain targeted measures for in-river phosphorus load reduction more effective than others. Therefore, this paper investigates multiple development scenarios in a small lowland polluted river draining an urban area (The Cut, Bracknell, UK), using an advection-dispersion model (ADModel-P). A comparative analysis is presented whereby changes in concentrations and fluxes of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and organic phosphorus (OP) have been attributed to specific transformations (mineralization, sedimentation, resuspension, adsorption-desorption, and algal uptake) and correlated to controlling factors. Under present day conditions the river stretch is a net source of SRP (10.4 % increase in mean concentration) implying a release of previously accumulated material. Scenarios with the greatest impact are those based on managed reduction of phosphorus load in sources (e.g., 20 % increase in afforestation causes an in-river SRP and OP reduction of 1.3 % to 12.6 %) followed by scenarios involving changes in water temperature (e.g., 1 °C decrease leads to in-river SRP reduction around 3.1 %). Measures involving increased river residence time show the lowest effects (e.g., 16 % decrease in velocity results in under 0.02 % in-river SRP and OP reduction). For better understanding downstream persistence of phosphorus pollution and the effectiveness of mitigation measures the research demonstrates the importance of establishing when and where reaches are net adsorbers or desorbers, and whether sedimentation or resuspension is important.

Abstract:Riparian vegetation plays a fundamental role in alluvial channel evolution by modifying flow and sedimentation dynamics. To elucidate the roles of sediment supply, flow‐dependent transport capacity, and morphodynamic feedbacks on the evolution of emergent vegetation patches over a single hydrograph, we conducted two experiments with different reach‐scale sediment supplies: a high‐supply experiment (HSE) and low‐supply experiment (LSE). We measured flow velocities, bedload transport, and topographic changes around a full‐scale patch of live emergent willows in an outdoor laboratory flume. Erosion occurred in the patch‐adjacent channel areas irrespective of the sediment supply, whereas deposition within the patch interior was suppressed in the LSE and enhanced in the HSE. The magnitude of patch deposition in each experiment was controlled by the local sediment supply to the patch and local sediment mobility during each discharge in the hydrograph. The local sediment supply was affected by bed morphodynamics at the patch head, which modulated the reach‐scale sediment supply by redistributing the bedload in the channel. Sediment mobility within the patch was flow‐dependent and a function of velocity and turbulent kinetic energy. For different discharges, the velocity in the patch changed proportionally with the freestream velocity; however, the turbulent kinetic energy was more sensitive, being elevated compared with the freestream during high flows and inhibited at low flows. Therefore, deposition and erosion within vegetation patches are not simply functions of the reach‐scale sediment supply or patch flow characteristics, as is often assumed, but additionally depend on the local sediment supply to the patch interior.

Abstract:The sinking of phytoplankton is critical to organic matter transportation in the ocean and it is an essential process for the formation of coastal hypoxic zones. This study was based on a field investigation conducted during the summer of 2022 in the Changjiang River (Yangtze River) Estuary (CJE) and its adjacent waters. The settling column method was employed to measure the sinking velocity (SV) of different size fractions of phytoplankton at the surface of the sea and to analyze their environmental control mechanisms. The findings reveal significant spatial variation in phytoplankton SV (−0.55–2.41 m/d) within the CJE. High-speed sinking was predominantly observed in phosphate-depleted regions beyond the CJE front. At the same time, an upward trend was more commonly observed in the phosphate-rich regions near the CJE mouth. The SV ranges for different size-fractionated phytoplankton, including micro- (>20 μm), nano- (2–20 μm), and picophytoplankton (0.7–2 μm), were −0.50–4.74 m/d, −1.04–1.59 m/d, and −1.24–1.65 m/d, respectively. Correlation analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between SV and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), implying that the influence of DIP contributes to SV. The variations in phytoplankton alkaline phosphatase activity suggested a significant increase in SV across all size fractions in the event of phosphorus limitation. Phytoplankton communities with limited photosynthetic capacity (maximum photochemical efficience, Fv/Fm < 0.3) were found to have higher SV than that of communities with strong capacity, suggesting a link between sinking and alterations in physiological conditions due to phosphate depletion. The findings from the in situ phosphate enrichment experiments confirmed a marked decrease in SV following phosphate supplementation. These findings suggest that phosphorus limitation is the primary driver of elevated SV in the CJE. This study enhances the comprehension of the potential mechanisms underlying hypoxic zone formation in the CJE, providing novel insights into how nearshore eutrophication influences organic carbon migration.

Abstract:The mobility of phosphorus (P) induced by sediment resuspension have been examined in a circulated flume. During the flume run, the water level and velocity were monitored, and water samples were taken for measurement of sediment and P concentrations. Peak values of both the P and sediment concentrations existed at x=4m, and then decreased slightly along the flume due to deposition. A faster P release was observed for coarser sediment, while a more sustained P release for finer sediment. Combining with the measured data from Yangtze River and sorption experiment, the relation between the load of total P (LTP) and sediment load (Qs) was estimated, and the expressions of distribution coefficient Kd and the concentration of particulate P (PP) were obtained. This study established a bridge between the small-scale sorption experiment and the field observation of natural scale, providing references for the management of contaminated sediment in natural rivers.

Abstract:This study examined phosphorus (P) dynamics by surveying the solid-phase and pore-water of the surficial sediment in a mesotrophic and eutrophic shallow lake in Maine, USA. Both lakes were dimictic, developed hypolimnetic anoxia, and released sedimentary P. We examined the controls on sedimentary P release by considering two possible mechanisms; mineralization and release of sedimentary organic P, and dissolution of Fe hydroxide following the onset of anoxia. The temporal investigation of solid-phase included sequential chemical extraction and 31P NMR analysis, and the pore-water included use of equilibrium samplers. In both lakes, the relative contribution of organic P to total sedimentary P release was minor compared to Fe hydroxide-associated P. The eutrophic lake, however, had more evidence of microbial uptake of sedimentary P and a higher degree of rapid P transformation in the water column. Sediment polyphosphates were dynamic and possibly contributed to hypolimnetic P accumulation. The pore-water Fe and P profiles exhibited similar temporal patterns as the solid-phase results. Together, they showed an upward migration of the redoxcline in the sediment, from winter to summer, resulting in the accumulation of Fe-bound P at the sediment–water interface in the winter followed by its release into the summer.

Abstract:The content and adsorption capacity of phosphorus in the surface and bottom sediments of the karst wetland were monitored for two months. The results indicated that the total phosphorus concentration in the sediments varied from 217.15 to 1511.84 mg kg‐1 and 353.64 to 1650.26 mg kg‐1 in summer and autumn, respectively. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm of phosphorus by wetland sediments were systematically studied. The adsorption isotherm conformed well to the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximal adsorption capacity (Qmax), background adsorbed phosphorus (NAP) and equilibrium concentrations (EPCe) in sediments were strongly affected by Eh, pH, the content of inorganic phosphorus (IP), and organic phosphorus (Or‐P). The results of this research will shed light on understanding the biogeochemistry behaviour of phosphorus at the sediment‐water interface in karst wetland, and the water purification mechanism in wetland sediments on a global scale.
