Abstract:Suppression of one’s emotions is defined as a shared experience among the March sisters in Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, and a large portion of women after the Civil War. Drawing on the failed careers of Jo and Amy and the struggling marriage of Meg, this essay argues that in learning how to suppress oneself and be seen as socially acceptable, the sisters lose their prospects for success and happiness. When the sisters stray from home, their flaws are exposed: Meg’s jealousy, Jo’s anger, and Amy’s greed. A return trip home and time completing labor provide them training for wifehood. Within this labor, each sister confronts their greatest desire, forcing them to contain their desires toward what they want in order to prevent another outburst. The domestic sphere becomes a place for them to come face-to-face with their largest flaw and use the home as a testing ground for how to suppress their true emotions and survive within the expectations of being a wife. In stifling their ambitions and desires outside the domestic sphere through suppression training, the March sisters lose the prospects for unhappy marriages with men that continuously inflame their flaws through belittling behavior and condemnation.

Abstract:Beginning in the 1970s, research in childhood studies led to the reevaluation of children’s agency and their contributions to society. In my work on children’s interactions with peers and adults in schools and families, I challenged traditional views of socialization offering the alternative view of interpretive reproduction and associated concepts of peer culture and priming events. I review the development of these concepts and the importance of longitudinal comparative ethnography and audiovisual recording for capturing how research with children contributes both to rigorous reexamination of socialization theory and the field of social psychology more generally. In particular, I focus on the expansion of two theoretical concepts in my work related to the general notion of interpretive reproduction: (1) nonlinear and collective reproductive versus linear stage views of socialization and human development and (2) micro dramas in collective routines in peer culture. In the review of my methods and theory and in the expansion of my theoretical concepts, I continually raise issues regarding reexamination of Mead’s play and game stage and for the need to radically alter or even abandon the traditional concept of socialization.

Abstract:This article investigates children’s elementary school experiences, exploring how they become autonomous, rational individuals—the type of person envisioned in the European Enlightenment and generally imagined as the outcome of Western schooling. Drawing on ethnographic research that followed one cohort of Latinx children across five years, we examine how schooling practices change across the elementary school years in a context that foregrounds high-stakes testing. We describe how practices that focus heavily on testing mold children into autonomous, rational individuals while marginalizing those who don’t fit this model. Adhering to these practices and naturalizing the Enlightenment subject limits educators’ ability to serve students who resist the normative practices of schooling.

Abstract:The Bildungsroman, or “coming-of-age” narrative, has long been a staple of Western literature; however, as a genre whose protagonists are usually young white men or privileged white women, authors who want to tackle a protagonist that does not fit this narrow description are faced with a challenge: how do they navigate the arc of growing up in a genre that is built for white men, and therefore excludes them and their characters by definition? My paper explores one such author’s efforts to reclaim the genre, not by forcing her characters to follow the traditional arc, but by exploring the reasons they are unable to conform to it. In her novel The Bluest Eye, Toni Morrison reinvents the genre by turning the individual arc of the Bildungsroman into the story of an African American community, interweaving multiple Bildungsromane to subvert dominant stereotypes of African-American people. In this paper, I juxtapose her novel with Marlon Riggs’ documentary, Ethnic Notions (1987) to reveal Morrison’s combative reinvention of the stereotypes Riggs investigates such as the “Black Mammy,” the “violent brute,” and the “pickaninny.” In doing so, she restores humanity and complexity to the one-dimensional caricatures of Blackness that have dominated Western thought and harmed Black people. By exploring Morrison’s novel, this paper hopes to reach beyond stereotypical depictions of Blackness and encourage the continued interrogation of its portrayals in our everyday lives as a mode of rehumanization and resistance to dominant racist ideologies.

Abstract:Many researchers have considered recent and intergenerational immigrant children’s perspectives on immigration policies. Fewer have investigated nonimmigrant children’s views despite children’s sociopolitical identities forming long before they can vote. Drawing from data generated in spring 2017, the author illustrates how young children at an urban, midwestern school argued against the Republican administration’s (anti-)immigration policies. Framed as an ethnographic case study, the author focuses on how third graders enacted justice-oriented identities as they wrote to congressional representatives about contemporary immigration policies. By attuning to how children embedded multiple institutional and political contexts in their written rationale, the author explicates the tensions and possibilities for nonimmigrant children in writing policies and possibilities for tomorrow. Ultimately, the author argues adults must intentionally sustain children’s civic participation in ways beyond the niceties that plague early years classrooms.

Abstract:Abstract: The article explores Italian biography for young readers focusing on the representation of women’s lives that have been overshadowed in the history of the literary genre. The analysis addresses both pedagogical and literary aspects, investigating which female role models are portrayed and the evolution of biographical writing style. In tracing the development of biographies about women within Italian children’s literature and its pedagogical and cultural background, five historical shifts are outlined: (1) the persistence of women’s moralistic portrayals in the 1960s, (2) the conflicting impact of feminist movements on the biographies of the 1970s, (3) the emergence of biographical picturebooks and a psychologically nuanced writing style in the 1980s, (4) the emphasis on rediscovering marginalized female figures at the beginning of the new century, and (5) contemporary trends of celebrating diverse female role models and the critical debate around gender representation. The analysis points out today’s challenges for biographies as hybrid nonfiction— not only interweaving different role models and styles, but also questioning their anthropocentric perspective.

Abstract:Book banning and censorship in the U.S. prompts necessary conversations on how critical literacy, dialogue, and inquiry are used in various school and library settings. We share guiding questions alongside three examples of textual analyses centering on gender fluidity with three young adult novels. We believe that English language arts teachers will benefit from seeing examples of how we responded to these texts with critical analysis questions that require students to analyze gender representation and identity within the stories. By developing an empathic analysis, students can engage in this critical work within classrooms and libraries, where reading diverse texts is encouraged.

Authentic Cariño and Respect in Minority Education: The Political and Ideological Dimensions of Love

Abstract:This chapter honors the memory of Jesus “Pato” Gomez, a beloved and respected colleague who, similarly to Paulo Freire, focused on the revolutionary potential of love to equalize asymmetrical power relations among human beings. Pato’s focus on love was particularly appropriate, given his tremendous individual capacity for love, empathy, and solidarity in both his personal life and his professional work. In his book, El Amor en la Sociedad del Riesgo (Love in a High-Risk Society), Pato shared his research on adolescents’ relationships. He investigated how to help adolescents develop the critical consciousness they need to reject abusive and dehumanizing relationships and consciously create those that are affirming and empowering. Pato interrogated the popular cultural notion that love somehow occurs magically and that human beings are powerless when it strikes even when the relationship is oppressive and psychologically unhealthy for one or both partners. His work focused on helping adolescent students develop the political and ideological clarity necessary to distinguish oppressive and subordinating love from love that is psychologically healthy, liberating, and affirming of one’s humanity. Drawing on his research, Pato described the basic skills young adults need to develop. One of these skills, “linking love to equality,” is especially relevant to my own research on increasing teacher political and ideological clarity. a Competency in this area requires adolescents to recognize power hierarchies in society and learn how they are manifested in personal relationships. Abstract:Re-adapting classical works for Hungarian adolescents bridges the gap between the classic and the contemporary. This paper introduces Borbála Szabó’s novel as an example in a larger project that establishes strong intertextual connections with early twentieth century canonical texts reflecting on the friendship of two literary figures, Dezső Kosztolányi, and Frigyes Karinthy. Fictional reality is parodied on several levels almost parasitically and in a hallucinatory manner. It is rearranged with metaleptic gestures relying on the tropology of the schizophrenic mindset. Living in a family of alcoholics, the protagonist, a sixteen-year-old girl is on the verge of a mental breakdown with psychotic episodes whose development is described through connections to literary texts and figures. NoFather NorMother (Nincsenapám, seanyám) is a complex and comic novel, a parody of caricatures. Its central image is the closed space. It is replete with transtextual, paratextual, and intertextual references explicitly discussing the status and meaning of literature and demonstrating strategies of interpretation. A tour de force of presenting narrative elements, citational techniques, critique, the novel stages the disturbing schizophrenogenic environment of a teenager and enters the debate around compulsory school readings.

Abstract:Anthropological Theory, Ahead of Print. This article reads the emergence of a Romani political space in Jordan, and its containment in the private sphere in Palestine, through Hannah Arendt's classic The Human Condition. In modernity, Arendt argues, political potential has been stifled by a kind of despotism best characterized by a masculine domination associated with the private sphere of the family. Given that such a position is to a great extent based on Arendt's reading of Classical Greek, Roman, early Christian, and Enlightenment thought, what variations to such a neat division can be found in the case of Romani groups in Arab/Islamic contexts that are beyond Arendt's geographic and epistemological scope? This article puts Arendt's idealized notion of the public/private into conversation with the longue durée of settlement and politics of Romani groups in Palestine and Jordan. Working with Arendt and alternate but related notions of the public/private in the Middle East, this article aims to offer a nuanced understanding of kinship and politics in a context in which the political is incomplete without the private.
